The differential has a separate sump from the transmission. It has a drain plug removed with a 1/4" ratchet with an extension. The fill plug is on the side of the case, just in front of the passenger side CV shaft. It is an easy job, if you have access to ramps or jackstands. Just need a funnel with tubing attached to facilitate filling.

Want to thank everyone on he board for all the info they share of their M's.You guys got some good looking cars.Just bought my 2nd M last month 01 had a 99 big difference in my opinion quieter, better interior no drifting no tire wobble all the problems everybody seemed to have with the 99.Looked at the 02 ddn't like the change in the grill base cost less but you pay for more options. Just put duals on mine they looked so good on everyone else's.Think I'll go over and join the club sounds like fun.Work nights though so I won't be in the wed group.Spend little time on the net but with winter coming I'll get on more oftenthanks againbob

Welcome! Make sure to post pictures of your M. I'd love to see how you did your duals. Make sure to join the club, there are several benefits, including having another reason to talk about the M. heh.

hey friends....if any of you caught the 11'0'clock news on ABC last night..after the Bush speeches they interviewed this Muslim girl about islam and this whole situation for like 20-25 min....that was my sister if any of you saw her...she's in med school and at DC hospitals all over now. so they just wanted to know how she felt about it and all. but everyone says i look like her, so just in case any of you saw her last night and were like.."whoa..that looks like av!"

OK, for those of you waiting to see if the club is for real, it's time to pony up the dues!
Our newest member is (drum roll please) none other than Dr. Dieter Zetsche, president and CEO of Daimler Chrysler US, as well as a Daimler Chrysler board member.
We just received a letter of acceptance of the honorable membership sent to him, and he is the proud owner of a black club polo shirt.
So what are you waiting for?

I am looking at purchasing my first M. (a '00 or '01). How can I tell if it is equipped with the PHP?
  • sdmike2sdmike2 Member Posts: 2,909
I wonder if having the "big boss" as a member will help us get into the proving grounds. lol!
  • sdmike2sdmike2 Member Posts: 2,909
In 2000 the feature was called PHP, and I believe the best way to tell is the tires. Non-PHP had Goodyear tires, while the PHP had Michelin Pilots. In the 2001 it is called PHG (performance handling group), but I'm not sure how you would easily tell. All 2001s were equipped with the Michelin Pilots, and I know the PHG has "V" rated tires because part of the package was the removal of the 118mph speed limiter. However, I'm not sure if DC used the V rated tires on the non-PHG. Someone else would have to chime in. Another way is to look at the venting of the front brakes. The PHG is externally vented (although I'm not sure I could recognize it if it bit me).

One more way would be to take it out on an empty stretch of road and see if you can go over 120mph. If so, it's PHG. ;)

Now that the Big Guy is a member , just ask him . What is the worse he can say -SORRY!
Hey Av ,very cool, I really like the rims. One question ,how does the tailight stay locked in place ?
  • ottowrkrottowrkr Member Posts: 778
The easy method is to look at the fron brake rotors. PHP cars have a brake rotor that is vented out near the center of the rotor. Non-php cars vent out the back side of the rotor. So if you can see an opening near where the rim is bolted to the rotor you have a php car.
  • russklassrussklass Member Posts: 389
The '99 and '00 PHP had 16" ten spoke wheels w/Michelin XGT V4 tires. Non PHP had 17" razorstar wheels shod with Goodyear tires.
The '01 and 02s all have the same 17" wheel, while the PHG has Michelin Pilot MXM V4 tires. The non-PHP has Michelin Energy tires.
I have/had one of each; hope this helps!
  • denvermdenverm Member Posts: 358
Here's a link to a photo of a PHG front brake rotor, with arrows showing the center venting described in ottowrker's post: http://btjdesign.com/300m/phgrotor.jpg NOTE: sometime during the '00 model year, the PHG cars also started coming with 17" razorstar wheels (mine has 'em), so don't assume that all '00 model year PHG M's have to have 16" wheels.
  • russklassrussklass Member Posts: 389
"NOTE: sometime during the '00 model year, the PHG cars also started coming with 17" razorstar wheels (mine has 'em), so don't assume that all '00 model year PHG M's have to have 16" wheels."
True, but a PHG car will have the "V" rated Michelin Pilots.
  • silverbullet4silverbullet4 Member Posts: 449
My 2k is PHP and has 17" sparkle paint wheels and Michelin Pilots, V rated. It was built in April, so sometime after the initial run, they used up the 16" and switched to 17. I remember when I first looked at the car I thought the guy was pulling a fast one when I saw the 17" wheels. But I can confirm from the original window sticker and the harsh ride over bad roads that it is indeed PHP.

Welcome back, AV. Great job on the hinged taillight. I think my dad's '56 Chevy had a hinged taillight and hidden gas cap. When I was about your age the custom car guys would solder over all the body seams and the holes left from removing the various ornaments. They would spend hundreds of hours applying multiple coats of lacquer. My best friend got rear-ended and every bit of lead popped out. GRRR!

I'll watch for your sister. Thanks for the heads up.

silver thats where i got the idea...it was a 55' tho. otto what i did was use the spring loaded hinge from the gas door itself. you know how the gas door just slams shut and pops open...that the beauty of the spring. so thats all teh tailight does off the hinge. but i also have a little tab that goes into a hole...just got backup. eventually tho...top secret info coming up...im gonna get several mini shocks, just like the ones on the hood and trunk lid...and align then in certain area behind tailight...bolted to body of car. build a release valve and activate with button. mold the button into the trunk lid (very small). so i can just click the button and the tailight will fly out and then up. revealing the gas cap. still in the works tho...
  • 300michael300michael Member Posts: 1,815
I would put the release button on the inside of the car. No need having it where kids can play with it, and it would be more secure, with gas prices going up.
Pictures look good, and am glad to hear from you.

I for one am glad to have Dr. Dieter Zetsche as a board member.

Just got this from carpoint.com. A "storage bin accessory unit" will protect your head from the B pillar in an accident?

    -----------------------------

Recall Alert: CHRYSLER 300M, CHRYSLER CONCORDE, CHRYSLER LHS, DODGE INTREPID
    Owner Notification Date: 9/18/2001
Number of Units Potentially Affected: 282,470
    Component Description: STRUCTURE:FRAME:MEMBERS AND BODY
    NHTSA Campaign Number: 01V273000
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Description of Recall Campaign:

Vehicle Description: Certain passenger vehicles (non-sunroof only) fail to
comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 201,
    "Occupant Protection in Interior Impact."

In the event of a crash, there is a potential for injury if the occupant's head
    were to contact the B-pillar.

Dealers will send the customer a storage bin accessory unit and installation
instructions which can be attached to the B-pillar. However, if the customer
feels that they are unable to attach the unit, they can a local authorized
    dealer perform the installation.
DaimlerChrysler has not yet provided NHTSA with an owner notification schedule
    for this campaign.
  • denvermdenverm Member Posts: 358
That is strange. Why would it only be non-sunroof cars? I drive with my seat all the way back, and the seatback reclined a fair bit, and I have noticed that my head is directly to the right of the very hard B pillar (not to mention the seat belt anchor adjusting knob!). But since I have a sunroof I guess I won't qualify for the magic storage bin accessory unit . . . . .
  • sdmike2sdmike2 Member Posts: 2,909
Maybe the pillars are different for the sunroof versions.

for anyone interested in a viewpoint of an American who visited Afghanastan, I came across this article written by an American who visited the country last year. Life is not very comfortable in that country and they don't care much for Americans. Its a long article, but well worth reading for those interested.

    http://www.newyorker.com/FROM_THE_ARCHIVE/ARCHIVES/?010924fr_archive05

I think all Americans should try to learn all they can about the Taliban and the country they occupy. In this way, we can start to know the enemy we face and use it as a tool to conquer them and their senseless acts of aggression.

There is a nice M in October 2001 CAR AUDIO and ELECTRONICS magazine. The car has a big audio/video system in it as well as a very COOL custom center console that houses a monitor for the rear. The car also rides on 20" Lowenhart wheels. LOOKS GOOD!

Here is a link to the mag BUT, the M is not featured on the web page however.

    av-

Thanks. I will be looking for your sister. I think we all need to learn as much as we can about the Taliban so that we can put all of this into perspective. We have to remember that there are radicals/terrorists/deviants in ALL races/religions/nationalities etc. Knowledge is power! Thanks again for helping in NY. Maybe you found something that belonged to my cousin's husband who is still missing from Tower 2!

    ajpiii-

    Thanks for the info.

    300M club members-

That's great that Dieter has become an honorary member of the club. Maybe he'll join the Wednesday chat sessions and TH and be able to address some of your concerns/views/ideas/suggestions re your cars AND those "5-STAR" dealers! Good luck. It would be great if he became an active participant.

I'm taking off this morning for a backpack trip with a buddy to Herman Lake, at about 12,000' and not too far from the Continental Divide. Here's a photo from our rather chilly trip there two years ago. http://btjdesign.com/hermanlake5.jpg Should be warmer this time.
  • ottowrkrottowrkr Member Posts: 778
From what I heard it is not the b pillar but the headliner area on the roof..Sunroof cars have more padding between the steel roof and the headliner material. .Non sunroof cars have less padding . I read the recall but dont understand were this storage bin accessory unit will be installed? Guess I will just have to wait till someone posts some pics.
  • easyrider300measyrider300m Member Posts: 1,116
Maybe the prez of the 300M club can extend an invitation to Dieter to be our guest of honor at one of our Wednesday nite chat session----a nice letter sent by snail mail with the club logo on top might get his attention and hopefully a positive response---Whatdya think guys?

Prior to my last fill-up my M never had anything other than Shell 93 Octane Premium in it. Everything was just fine. I read many posts that claimed a variety of things everything from it made no difference to some who believed it caused damage. On my last fill-up I used Shell 89 Midgrade to see if I could find a difference. I should say that the premium was used nearly without exception on my previous cars (Neon, Sebring JXi) and I could immediately tell if anything else was used. The first thing I noticed with the Midgrade in my M was that I lost 1 full mile per gallon almost immediately. Now that I have almost used the entire tank my M now idles noticibly rougher (but still acceptible). Unlike my pervious 2 cars I did not notice any loss of performance.

Based on my observations the premium fuel may not be completely justified based on cost but I will be using the 93 octane once again.
  • fuzzywuzzyfuzzywuzzy Member Posts: 958
It's your money have fun paying $2+/gallon, when we go to war :)

I don't notice a differenc at all. I have used 87, 89, & 93. I got better milage with 89. 87 felt the same, but my milage was off 1mpg. The 93 i saw no diffenec in performance, or milage. So don't know. I have just over 41K miles on the M.
  • 300michael300michael Member Posts: 1,815
I'm with Fuzzywuzzy on this one. I too have tried 93, 89, and 87 octane with about a 1 mpg differance in economy. But the extra cost doesn't justify the differance in proformance. Unless I am going thorugh the Rockys or other Mountain areas.
