300mmm or anyone who needs build info, if you can get me the last 6 numders of the vin I can try to find out a time frame for you. send them to my email lhbuilder@hotmail.com
Can somebody tell me whether both left and right hand side mirrors has dimming capability. I have a 2001 and only the driver side mirror has dimming capability but the passenger side mirror.
300kam, the passenger side mirror does not dim. It is done on purpose. Might be a safety issue since objects in it appear smaller.
So far my 5* dealer has treated me very well. I had a few minor warranty issues and two services there. Always went smooth. I am amazed on how big their service department is and how professional everything is done. I can't complain (btw, it's Normandin Chrysler in San Jose). They are not open on Saturday. But God bless them (and I am not even religious :-). Might be a bit more inconvenient for me but I prefer it when less people have to work on weekends and get to spend time with their families.
Was at the movies tonight (Ocean 11, good movie). When I came back I noticed how the car on the right to me had parked very close. I was wondering how he got out of it. And of course he scraped some paint of the plastic stripe that runs along the door. Should be easy to fix with touch up paint. But it still makes me angry. Wish I had had something to write with me to leave the driver a note and congratulate on the fine parking job.
OK - I'll try to simplify it: For the factory radio/cd/cassette (model number P04858540A[X]) - does the last digit ([X]) mean version of the radio (i.e., minor mods/engineering revision levels) or something else? If I were to buy a used one, should I stick to what I assume are later ones (i.e., G and H rather than, say, E) or are the differences so minor as to be insignificant?
I just got duals put on NMIFR300M. They look great. So far no complaints about the sound. The shop may have hung the back transverse muffler a little lower that the original. The bottom is about an inch higher than the back anti-sway bar (at least that is what I think it is).
Can some one suggest a black paint that I could paint the muffler and the rear section of exhaust pipe so they aren't so obvious from the rear.
I purchased a K&N air filter for my Concorde last week (your 300's take the same filter: K&N P/N 33-2136) - ordered it through a regional auto parts chain - not a stock item in the store. When I went to install it, the instructions mentioned a gasket that had to be installed in the filter box before putting the filter in - but there was no gasket included with it.
Long story short, I had the auto parts store call K&N, and I e-mailed them separately. We both got the same answer back: Yes - it definitely is supposed to have that gasket. The e-mail reply included a toll-free number to call for them to mail me a gasket. Also, the auto parts store had a second filter over-nighted in from their warehouse, and guess what - no gasket. The quick and definite answers on the phone and by e-mail, plus two out of two having no gasket all lead me to believe that they placed at least one whole lot (maybe more) into distribution without gaskets and that they know about it.
Just wanted to warn you in case you installed one without the gasket assuming that the instructions were wrong or just poorly written.
The toll-free number to get a gasket mailed to you (probably their main number) is 800-858-3333.
Any high temperature paint should work fine. There is a flat black paint you can get for gas grills that would probably work nicely. Try any auto parts or hardware store.
I'd suggest you let the pipes "season" a while to get the manufacturing oil film off them or rub them down with laquer thinner first so the paint will adhere better.
Just picked mine up from our local Canadian Tire store and it did have the gasket. Even though it is not noted on the installation instructions I would also coat both sides of the rubber with a good lithium or synthetic grease. If you go to the K&N web site they mention that this should be done.
You might try Duplicolor High Heat Black DH 1602. It is rated to 1200 degrees, and can be used on exhaust components. I used it on the resonator of my Intrepid, as it seemed to be too visible from the side and rear in silver. It is resistant to salt and humidity too.
I was wondering if you can fill in this fan,how the assembly line works. In particular how Cdn cars US cars and European cars are assigned and do they come off the same line? There is no reason for this question, just a curiosity. Thxs.
Tom, I've had it up to 120 (hey it's still so new) and everywhere in between up hill down and cornering. I have nothing but smooth as butta' ride. You know by the sounds of this group there are some guys with some good sources to also respond to your question about vibrating around 65, 70. I tell you, I don't like being in that position, having a problem with something that no one else has and the manufacture/dealer saying "it's the nature of the product" AAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! But I think if you mention to them about this board, you may convince them to take a closer look at your particular problem. John
I'm back after 3 days without my computer. What an experience. I had a hard drive failure (determined after much diagnosis) and had to replace my HD. I decided I'd also upgrade to XP because I like the new UI and some other stuff. My home machine was Win98 SE, and my work laptop is Win2k. Well, the OS install was a breeze! It effortless recognized all but one component in my PC and it all worked great the first time. No need to install any mfg drivers. The item that DIDN'T work was my TV tuner card, so I went looking for drivers. Found several that were supposed to possibly maybe work, but nada. I eventually gave up and bought a new tuner card, then another. Neither worked. I soon determined that the problem was my pathetic on-board video card that had served me well before (4MB Intel AGP). That meant buying a new video card. Jeez. Well, to make a long story short, I finally was able to get everything working. Intstead of paying $100 for a nice hard drive I ended up paying about 3 times that for a drive, XP, a TNT-2 card, and a tuner card. About 2am yesterday I considered just re-installing Win98 and screwing all of it. lol!
Anyway, I'm back. The system is stable as heck and runs like a scalded cat. Just like Big Red (aha! the 300M tie in!)
Oh..the company that we get our shirts and hats from (the club) sent us a christmas card c/o me. It says Happy Holidays and thanks for your business.
Thanks Ottowrkr, I would love take you up on your kind offer. Who would have the VIN at this point? Does the dealer get all or part of the VIN when they place the order? Thanks again.
How it all works, wow that's a long process to explain. First off we have 4 different plants that make up our building- Stamping ,Bodyshop,Paint and Trim.
Stamping- we stamp 72 outer body panel including; doors hoods, decklids, quarter panels and roofs. we produce 32,000 stampings a day on 2 shifts using 230 tons of steel .
Body-were all the stampings come together to make the body. Robots do the welding
Paint- We use water base paint and clear coat .Painting is done by robots..
Trim/Chassis/Final- this is were the painted bodies are finished off into completed cars. In this area we have 8 different zones- Foam,Trim ,Engine line,Door line,Pallet,Chassis, Tire room, Final and Rolls/Reprocess.
Foam- this is were we spray expandable foam into the cavities of the car for noise reduction,we spray in the A ,B ,C posts and along the lower sill plate .This is also were the doors are removed from the car and placed on a separate carrier that goes to the door line.
Trim -the wiring, heater, sunroof, headliner, eng/tran computer , carpets and other items are installed
Engine- We get our basic engine and trans sent to us from other DC plants ,We mate the eng/trans install the torque converter ,starter.A/C compressor, exhaust downpipes, halfshafts, front struts ,steering knuckles, drive belts and bolt the Eng/Trans into the cradle that it sits on. .
Door line- we build up the entire door on this line
Pallet - the finished engine unit is then taken and the placed on a large carrier were the rear suspension module , rear struts ,brake and gas lines , gas tank, cooling module and complete exhaust is installed The brakes are filled and working before they go into the car..Also in Pallet we have what is called the Sanyo system. Once the finished pallet is done it goes to the Sanyo machine were the body from trim is waiting. The two are bolted together by automated nut runners .
Tire room -we install and balance the tires and rims
Chassis-we basically connect all the wiring of the eng/trans to the body wiring, bolt upper struts to the body, install the pre-built instrument panel, headlights ,taillights ,rear bumper fascia, steering column , wheel and airbag. then we do an electrical test of what have completed so far.The front and rear glass are installed by robots
Final-This is were we finish up the car, all interior parts are put on seats, center console ,front fascia The A/C ,power steering, trans and gas are filled,Tires are installed and the finished doors are reattached to the car.Hoods doors decklids are fit,and the car gets stated for the first time and get tested for entire operation .
Rolls and reprocess- Once the car starts it is driven to a rolls test were they make sure all operations of the eng/trans are working, brakes and the entire electrical system are checked over . The 4 wheel alignment and headlight aim is done. A water test is done to check for leaks. If the car is 100% passed it goes for one last inspection and is then shipped . If it fails anything it will go to the reprocess area and be fixed. once fixed it will be rechecked and then shipped.
That is a simple explanation of how a vehicle is built. It truly is a remarkable process. As for U.S /Canadian/Euro care they all get built on the same line. They are all mixed up as are the models ,we build Intrepids ,Concordes and 300M's in no particular order. Each car has what is called a build sheet taped to it . When the car enters each work station the operator must look at this sheet to determine what part is needed to complete his job. Many parts we get are also sequenced (all fascias, tailamps, wiring harness ,headliners and many other parts) meaning they come in order how the cars come down the line. So all the operator has to do is pick the next part and make sure the car number matches the sequenced part. Each operator has 48 seconds to do there particular job , this is how we build around 968 cars a day . Also each work station has a computer ,this computer is used if a job is not completed or done incorrectly. For example if my job was installing the headlight , on the computer would be listed every possible problem that could go wrong with doing this job. From wrong light , loose light , electrical connections loose/ damaged . If any of these problems happened when installing the light all I would have to do is key in the defect and the upgrader (the guy who fixes the defects) placed throughout each zone would fix this problem by checking his computer and seeing the defects on each car as it comes to his station. Also every time the operator completes his job he hits a button on his computer to record that his job was completed OK. This then advances his screen to the next car and he repeats this operation all over again.
Hopefully next summer the 300 club will make the plant one of its weekend get togethers and you all can see first hand the entire process.
Appreciate info on this board. Took the advise and found a 2001 that was sold new in Oct and traded back to the dealer in NOV. Talked to the owner to make sure car was OK and he stated that the 300M was for his wife and 2 kids and that they needed a hauler so traded for a van. Car listed new for $32000. Bought for $23700. Only 1600 miles on it and still have 34 months of new car warranty. Love the upgrade stereo
Have read on the board about tires. Mine is equiped with Michelin MXV4 Energy's. Any comments on this tire. Am starting out with the factory recommendation of 30 lbs pressure.
Have only put about 200 miles on so far but seem to be getting about 23-24 mpg with quite a bit of local freeway miles. Hope this keeps up.
Only concern so far is a few drops of engine oil on garage floor. Will wait to see if the gaskets reseal as the car sat at the dealers for a while.
Wow, I,m impressed. It would be nice to take a tour, maybe one of these days.I hope you all have a great Holiday season and thanks for my factory ordered M.
Nice! What color? What stuff in it? Sounds like you got a great deal where someone else took the depreciation hit! With those Energy tires I can tell that you don't have PHG, but you should still be happy with them. Take pictures, and now join the club!
Though you guys might find this intresting. I was in a section of FL, near me called Coral Springs. I saw tons! 15-20 Intrepid RT Cop cars rolling the streets. Most had the full lights, & badging, but I'm sure a few I saw were unmarked. I guess South FL is the test mule. Since I saw that Intrepid pull over a car a few months ago, I never saw another till this weekend. Watch out.
Tom--A shimmy at 70mph is not business as usual. I had the slight shimmy at 25mph which is the Badyears since I have had everything else checked twice, but at 60-80 the car is like on rails, no vibes at all. My badyears are almost at 40K and I can justify going to something else in the Spring.
Roger-- I am definitely "in" for the Woodward and Plant trip.
Had a 300 mile round trip a week ago with the M and felt nice getting 25 mpg at 70 mph. Then I took my wife's 00 Eldo w/12K on it, in for service last Saturday, and on the 80 mile round trip I got 30.6 at 75-80mph. Sigh...and its an 8 and on regular too!!
I personally think the MXV4's are great. Swapped the "badyear" Eagle GA's that came on my 98 Intrepid ES with them. No regrets. They improved the handling of the car a lot. The badyears always felt "mushy" no matter what pressure I used. The GA's also wear out quickly and are nearly useless in snow (important where I live!).
I run the tires at 36 PSI, I think my door placard says 32. I like a little firmer ride and crisper handling. So far they are wearing like iron.
Depending on where the oil drips are it could just be residual drain oil dripping from the front craddle. Because of the location of the oil filter, it's tough to change without spilling some oil onto the engine and cradle. If the spots are toward the left front of the car, near the suspension that's probably what it is. My experience is that these engines are very dry.
Splatt, __I have tried without success to get the lights to flash when unlocking the car. Your directions are very clear, so I guess this doesn't work on a '99 300M. Thanks.....
friday night i had a flat tire on thruway 90, ny state thruway. i called roadside assistance and they told me that they can't come and help because i'm on restricted highway. (augh) so ended up calling my son and he came with a friend and they both helped change the tire.
what a night. so now i'm on the full spare but noticed that there's slight vibe.
there's about 40K on these 3 old tired. i don't know if the rim for the flat is damaged or not. the tire is completely in shreds.
i scrolled up about 100 messages and couldn't find any info on tires, but have noticed MXV4 someone had posted before this message.
so, here goes (i know... it's been posted before but it's early and my eye sight ain't as good before i wake up) what tires would i need and what am i looking at price wise?
Sleepymw - I would suggest get another MVX4 since that's what you have. Or if you don't (couldn't tell from the post) then there are a few alternatives. People have liked the Yoko Avids - they are cheap and nice. I have the MVX4 plus and this they're fine. I also don't have the phg either... The door says run them at 30, I usually have them at about 35, though with the change in weather it affects that somewhat.
Tour - I can't wait! I'm very interested in going.
Also - does anyone know how to program the transmitter? I have an old one from my old car (same transmitter) and don't remember how to do it. Anyone??
Thanks Bigmike 5 and Zoomnm for the help, my problem is a bit different than a shimmy. It's a low frequency vibration like the engine is straining to accelerate, best described perhaps as, like riding over grooved pavement. Oh well, some one will have had the problem and got it fixed. I am being patient about it. Thanks again Tom
Part of your problem might be caused by the fact that you have new rubber at one corner. Running with mismatched tires (in terms of wear) can do that. If the three with 40k on it are still in good shape and you don't want to break the bank, try getting just one tire and matching it up with the spare on the front. If your 40k tires are wearing down and you want to replace them, we've heard great things about the Avid's for under $100 per tire, but they won't work for you if you have PHG.
sdmike2 is right on the issue of trying to match tires for wear. After a minor sideswipe on my 01 M which blew a front tire, my 5* did not want to put a new Michelin (Pilots with my PHG) on the front with the original tire which had only 3K on it. Luckily I had a factory f/s spare so they put that on the front with the new tire- No vibrations-no problems!!! I may not have been so happy running 2 fronts in different states of wear. I do not need new tires now, but I have had nothing but good experiences with all the Goodyears I've had over the years (6 sets-inc. on my last Intrepid ES). My only tire defect in 25+ years of driving has been with a Michelin (promptly replaced @ no charge). I would not hesitate to buy either Goodyears or Michelins. Hoosiers are well-regarded but may not be available in all areas. Dunlops have also been mentioned favorably in this forum. Do a bit of research before making a decision to get a decent tire for your needs and driving patterns. BTW- Why won't the Yokohama Avid's work if you have the PHG? ...I mean as long as you excercise a bit of self-restraint and keep it below 118mph
Greetings fellow Mers: It was interesting reading about the reluctance expressed by an installer to put a new tire on the same end of the car with one that was slightly used. I have done two 5 wheel rotations (got a full size spare)and have experienced no problems up to 80 mph. This is with the 17" Michelin Pilot tires on my 2000 PHP.
I made it OK from Dallas to Houston Friday, averaging 75-80 mph most of the way. With one day of city driving added, the gas mileage was about 23.7 mpg--not bad for rolling hills. Returning on Sunday, it rained the entire trip, including some of the heaviest downpours I have ever experienced. The Silver Bullet leaked not a drop, and handled crosswinds and standing water with ease. This is a great road car! My Bonnie Raitt CD did jam up, but changing to another CD got the tunes back.
I tried to set up the key fob to flash the lights when unlocking, but it did not work on my 2000, either. It just unlocks the trunk... I guess this only works on 2001s and up.
guess a friend said he can get mastercrafts at wholesale (he owns a auto shop) and quoted me 90 bucks, installed and balanced.
i don't which one, but when i went to mastercraft, the only one for 225/55/17 is synsys 01 ... he said that dunlop made mastercraft tires, just not paying for dunlop name...
Count me in. I was going last year and got hung up at the last minute. Is there a shortcut from Seattle to Ontario that I don't know about (250 miles).lol. Rick/Geezer300M
HEY!! How are you? You haven't been here in ages. All those kids must be keeping you busy! ;-)) Sorry to hear about your flat, but what's this about a "restricted highway"? Is it NY that "restricts" them or does that mean that roadside service is not available on ANY highway? Just curious.
I thought mastercraft made ski boats, not tires. Another off-brand that I had good luck with in the past were Kellys. I put some Kelly Metrics on my Eclipse replacing Goodyear Invictas and it was like I got a new car. The difference between the POS Goodyears and the Kellys was amazing.
Jona57 - of course the tires would WORK, but the shop would be doing a disservice if they put T rated tires on a car that can reach V-rated speeds. In fact, I tried to put a lower graded tire on my wife's van and Costco wouldn't do it! Surprised me.
there is no way to get the build sheet after your car is built. But we leave one in the car for shipping. So if you happen to get to your car before the pre-delivery inspection look around inside the car you should find one. For a car guy the build sheet is the ultimate find .
My dealer put the build sheet for my 2000 LHS in the glove compartment along w/the window sticker and VHS tape. Back in the day build sheets used to be stuck under the seats, under the carpet, in the dash, inside the door panels...........
It's white with chrome wheels, big stereo, sunroof & full size chrome spare. Black interior. Real world milage today with lots of stop & go traffic but still got close to 21 mpg. No complaints. Took car to dealer today regarding oil leak & yes it has a leak which they could not locate so they put dye in the oil & told me to drive it for a week & then bring it back & they will use a black light to locate. Please post info about club. What are the advantages cost etc? Whats phg?
For the Club go to http://www.300Mclub.org and brouse away lots of info. even more if you join. PHG/PHP is Performance Handling Group, or Performance Handling Package, depending on the year. It is the upgraded brakes sport tuned suspension and a few other things. I do not have it personally, but others could explain it in more detail.

so, here goes (i know... it's been posted before but it's early and my eye sight ain't as good before i wake up) what tires would i need and what am i looking at price wise?
hello to everyone that remembers me.
can't wait for the package...
Is there any way to get the build sheet for my car, or is this something I should already have?
Igor
Tour - I can't wait! I'm very interested in going.
Also - does anyone know how to program the transmitter? I have an old one from my old car (same transmitter) and don't remember how to do it. Anyone??
Tom
20,000 miles and smiles,
Silver

HEY!! How are you? You haven't been here in ages. All those kids must be keeping you busy! ;-)) Sorry to hear about your flat, but what's this about a "restricted highway"? Is it NY that "restricts" them or does that mean that roadside service is not available on ANY highway? Just curious.

Jona57 - of course the tires would WORK, but the shop would be doing a disservice if they put T rated tires on a car that can reach V-rated speeds. In fact, I tried to put a lower graded tire on my wife's van and Costco wouldn't do it! Surprised me.
Whats phg?
PHG/PHP is Performance Handling Group, or Performance Handling Package, depending on the year. It is the upgraded brakes sport tuned suspension and a few other things. I do not have it personally, but others could explain it in more detail.
