SDMike - you have kids, I'm sure you have spent just as much time as I have putting those stupid decals on all their toys that the manufacturers seem to think it not their job to do. Can't be much different aside from the fact that it's a $30K car -- okay maybe it is different.

Video- I know you asked a question and I hope that someone will get back to you as I have read posts with window problems, the people here are usually good at feedback. I have not had this problem as mine is a 01.

sdmike2. It is really easy to install, just take your time. As your car is almost a year old I would suggest you clean all surfaces with alcohol. (not the drinking kind) and make sure the pieces are nice and soft. I put mine on the dash in the hot sun. I would also suggest a hair dryer, because the pieces will come off if you heat the piece. I had one piece go off center and it came off with no problem with heat and just re-installed. If I could give you one tip. TAKE YOUR TIME!!! Good luck and lets see how yours looks after. I used all my pieces even the 2 long strips that go up the sides of the radio unit.

Mike, when I did mine, the molded pieces went on pretty easily, but the flat pieces can move around a bit. They supply an alcohol spray that you use to clean the trim, but to also coat the double-sided tape. This allows you to move the trim around a bit before it get adhered. It takes about a minute or a little less for the alcohol to evaporate, so be prepared to hold it a little.

The one piece I had trouble with was the one around the gear shift, since the flat trim has to bow up around the ashtray. The one around the radio and ac controls is not hard, but you want these two pieces to butt up against one another properly. Be especially careful there.

Lastly, I found the little oval trim pieces that go around the ac vents to look silly. Same for the pieces that go around the window switches and door handles. In my opinion of course. :)

    Hope that helps.

    OOPS!
Sorry guys, I messed up. The change was last summer, so '99, '00 and '01 use PS fluid, '02 uses ATF.
I've seen so many changes in the plant plus, at my advanced age (55) it's hard to keep track sometimes. (That's my story and I'm sticking to it)

    wire2-

I wish that you and ottowrkr could take over that plant and get things going in the right direction. Then you could pick the guys who care and get rid of the ones who don't you'd see sales ZOOM!

While my 300 and my wife's jeep have the same radio, her antenna gets much better FM reception than my window one. Having already had a 2nd radio installed in my new car, I think it is the antenna. So, where is the EBL unit itself located?

Be advised that there's EBL module connected to the rear window antenna leads, and it works quite effectively.
  • sdmike2sdmike2 Member Posts: 2,909
Thanks everyone for their input. I agree with 99_300M_ric_va that some of the pieces look better in the box. Upon closer examination I'm not real happy with how the pieces look. The radio trim piece shows a significant amount of the edges (over 1/8 inch all around) and the ashtray piece has at least 1/4 inch gaps between the trim and the edge. The color is still a little red compared to my luxury group trim, and there is a pea-sized (3-4mm) bubble/chip on the shifter piece. Finally, many of the pieces have rough edges and small burrs that I'll have to take off with an exacto knife if I have the patience.

I'm not sure now if I'm going to put this in or send it back.

The antenna thing is behind this plastic trim panel:

At least they're quick on customer service. About 5 minutes after I emailed them about the bubble/chip problem I got an email telling me that they'll ship me a new trim piece on Monday.

Could you please post pictures when your finished installing the trim, and were you sent samples to match up with the existing wood trim? Have to admit its enticing

I've put all of the small pieces on. I'm ok with it, although I didn't notice a flaw on the mirror switch piece until I was past the point of no return. :( My favorite piece is the overhead computer control I think. Fits edge to edge and looks nice. My least favorite is the passenger side window switch. It's way too small. Here are some pics. http://www.ritchiefamily.com/car/woodtrim/

You guys that have replaced your factory head units with aftermarket ones... where did you ground it? I just installed a Blaupunkt San Francisco (their top-of-the-line) and I'm getting a TREMENDOUS amount of engine noise. I have tried grounding the beast in 3 different locations including the factory ground strap, the chassis, and even the neg battery terminal. There was little, if any, change. I am running 2 amps which were quiet as a mouse until I changed out the head unit. Any ideas here would be greatly appreciated or it's off to the local stereo installer which I'm not excited about as they charge BIG BUCKS to troubleshoot!

I used the stock grounding strap on my Alpine unit.

What stock wood trim do you have? Standard or Lux.

Looks great! I like the red better with your color interior than the dark grey that I had in Christine. At the time, I couldn't get the lighter color.

Just washed the car today and put one coat of ZFX on. Last coat was done in November! No time for Z6 today because I had to go out. Temp was in the low 60's today. Perfect for washing and Z'ing.

  • fastdriverfastdriver Member Posts: 2,273
    ruski-

Mine is fine so far. I have 12,800 miles and no problems. Are the people with all the problems the ones with all the mods who race everything and anything they see and/or bring their cars to the racetrack every week?

I've been reading about that since last year when I found the CL/TL forums.

Do you have a problem with yours?

mine is acting funny. I have no mods but enjoy good acceleration.

It does not act up under hard throttle, but when I operate it lightly in slow traffic it does not always shift smoothly and on time. Very often it gives a good kick out of nowhere.

Sure sounds like there are a few other Christines out there. Those "5-STAR" dealers don't make it ANY easier. Evidently Chrysler isn't too concerned or they'd crack down on them and send undercover people from Auburn Hills to act as "normal" customers and see what it's like in the REAL world instead of the glassed in world of Auburn Hills! Like they say- when you get a good one........

I wonder why they changed to atf-4 instead of Texaco power steering fluid---I have an 00---would I be better off using the atf-4 or should I just stick with the Texaco fluid?---are other brands of fluid just as good or are there differences across brands-----would using another brand void the warranty

my power steering fluid is leaking about 1 quart a day---could be a loose or leaky hose or possibly a bad pump---now I am wondering if their tightening of the accessory belt to try to solve a whining sound per TSB caused the pump to prematurely fail--any thoughts on this.

Luckily my car has 31K and thus should be covered under warranty---
  • soonerbsoonerb Member Posts: 9
Local dealer says that depending on when an assembly plant got phased into using ATF+ 4 it then becomes the power steering fluid of choice for those cars as factory fill. That might explain why early service manuals still say power steering fluid. I am told that atf+ 4 is an extreme duty hydraulic fluid and is a serious upgrade for automatic trans. That is why it can be used as power steering fluid. Kosh and others have the question. How about ottoworker or wire2 confirming the factory fill?
  • kosh_2258kosh_2258 Member Posts: 338
Chrysler probably did it as a cost reduction item.
If ATF+4 meets the specs for the power steering system then it reduces cost for Chrysler because it will:
    1. Remove an inventory item and costs to manage it.
    2. Reduce the cost of the fluid because they will use more and probably get price breaks for the increased purchase volume.
    3. Reduce warranty costs because the fluid provides better protection in the tranny and PS systems.

SDMike - yeah I installed 9 pieces yesterday. I agree with you that some of the finish on the edges could be better. I was really dissappointed in the window switch pieces as they are straight cut and not rounded at the edges and stick up above the vinyl edging. Your pictures look like your's are?? And the one on the driver's side doesn't cover portions of the white instructional lettering that's there (do the 01's even have that?). I may give them a call about replacing them, but I sort like the way it looks now...not too much, maybe just enough.

Because my car is 3 years old, I used the laquer thinner and alcohol like they recommended to clean. It was a traumatic experience to put that stuff on the dash. Even more traumatic to put the pre-glue stuff on and make sure I didn't put it somewhere it did'nt belong. I had to have my husband help with the bigger pieces which definitely made it easier.

I only installed the console pieces, overhead computer piece that covers controls and the clock and vent pieces. It was hard to decide on those round vent pieces...I chose to put them on as look of "balance" outweighed the slightly odd look. I was pleasantly suprised in how much I liked the door trim pieces. I did not install the consol trim pieces and now am happy I have the fish scale shifter -- with the chrome knob it looks really classy.

All in all it looks great and has a real rich look with the agate interior. My 13-year old son thinks it looks really "tight" and my almost 6-year old daughter who was sitting in the car watching me part of the time said "mommy, when I grow up I want to driver your 300M" I even went out to the garage a couple times last night just to look at it! Oh, and the match is perfect aside from the fact it's slightly glossier as the orignal pieces are 3 years old.
  • blondablonda Member Posts: 542
Weird, but the '99-00 22-piece kit that includes the 2 shifter options does not have a piece for the front passenger seat controls.

    Sorry I can't post pictures...I don't have a digital camera yet.

I'm getting the Hugo modified dual system installed Thursday. Just wondering, does the Special have true duals or a similar modified setup?
  • sdmike2sdmike2 Member Posts: 2,909
My drivers side window control piece isn't perfect, but it sounds like it might bet closer than yours. Mine left a small gap at the rear outside corner where it should have curved and didn't. It also didn't cover over the little white window symbol. The strip was big enough, but if I place it in a position to cover the symbol it wouldn't fit in other places.

It sounds like you installed the pieces that I left off and visa versa. I haven't done the center console because they're sending me a new piece, and I won't install the vent pieces because I think they're too much. If we had the same interior we could have split a kit! :)

I'll have my digital camera at the meet if you want to take a bunch of pictures of things and have me put them on a CD for you.

Have you tried a new radio (maybe this one is defective) or contacting the company yet? I'd try those before I'd have Al & Ed's start diagnosing your noise problem.

In the Dallas area there is a Saturday morning local radio talk show about automobiles. The host is a guy named Edward Wallace (I think) who seems quite knowledgeable about the auto industry. He often breaks industry news before it shows up other places.
Yesterday morning he mentioned that Daimler Chrysler has been complaining about the amount of cash they have to set aside to cover the cost of warranty work and recalls. DC is evidently blaming the executives who have "departed" since Daimler took over for the cost of warranty repairs on the cars designed and/or built before Daimler's takeover.
Mr. Wallace went on to report that their attempt to blame former management for this is a little strange since Chrysler's warranty costs (on a per car sold basis) are actually lower than either Ford or Generous Motors and, in fact, only slightly higher than Honda's. He said that the per (covered) car cost for Chrysler actually averages less than $200 per car/per year.
This per car cost is (according to him) also less than the similar cost for Mercedes.
It sounds to me as though the former execs must have done a pretty good job designing and building their products!
I can vouch for the fact that DC hasn't had to spend much on warranty repairs on my 300m, at least since I bought it when it was 1 year old with 11K miles on the odo. My M has been trouble free, except for one window motor.

All they have to do is be a little more strict in the factory, and I bet they could cut even those costs in half. For example, our car, Christine II. I can tell that it's a well-engineered piece, it's just that the final production of certain parts and the subsequent assembly are where the issues start. Granted there are people like otto and wire2 who do their jobs right, but just as in anywhere else, not everyone does. Hence, after a while, certain things they were involved with in the assembly start to have problems.

I'm not exaclty sure what DC has spent on our car alone, but it's been in for service about 10 times. We've had a new steering wheel, new rotors, (2) new lights modules, a new wiper switch thing, and a few other things, not to mention all the times the car went in for stuff that never did get fixed becasue it just disappeared while it was there.

As it turns out, at least with Blaupunkt, you need to ground the amp(s) and the head unit to the same place or a ground loop results leading to a lot of noise. The good people at Blaupunkt told me that they do not ground their chassis along with the audio output, so this is why that occurs. (Yadda...yadda...yadda) Anyway, to make a long story short, I re-grounded my amps and added a pair of PAC filters and now the system is noise free.
Love the look of Big Red with her new interior accents! Makes me wish I could change between wood and carbon fiber with the push of a button...maybe that will be an option someday! It should be fun to compare Big Red and Blonda's interior!
BTW - Let me know when you are heading up to Carlsbad this Saturday and I'll tailgate ya'!
  • sdmike2sdmike2 Member Posts: 2,909
As always, your answer went in one ear and out the other. lol! I can't wait to see it though. My guess is that your system could eliminate all possibility of conversation at the meet if you wanted. Ever see the movie DC Cab? There's a great scene where Gary Bussy's character blows out his windows. :)

I'm thinking of going up to carlsbad a little early to set up and drop off a couple of certificates of appreciation. Since it starts at noon I was thinking of leaving here at 11 at the latest...probably closer to 10:30 or 10:45. I had a dream the other night that 15 cars showed up and the dealer forgot to make room for us. lol. If that's not too early let me know and we'll tailgate.

  • ottowrkrottowrkr Member Posts: 778
Yes ,things can always be better . But most of the problems you mention have nothing to do with the way we put your car together. First off we don't build the Instrument panels , we buy them fully built from an outside company . All we do is place it in the car, bolt it in and connect a few wires .So any problems you have with gauges or switches are not the assembly plants fault. The brakes are all built up on the front steering knuckles that come in pre-built that we buy again from an outside supplier . Steering wheels , built by outside supplier . Seats also built by an outside supplier. We the line worker have no effect on the reliability of those parts. All we really do is install parts that are shipped to us, if they fail its because they were poorly engineered or built incorrectly by an outside supplier.

soonerb -yes we do use trans fluid in the power steering system.

I'm going to put in the Bosch Plus4's and need to know what size Torx bit fits the screws in the coils on top of the plugs. Can anyone help?
I've already added dual exhausts (Hujo-style) and the K&N Aircharger to my 2001, so I figured I might as well do the other common performance mod!
    Thanks in advance.

I think it is a T-25 size torx. I remember it was easier to use a bit attached to a rachet to break things loose and then use a torx screw driver to finish it. The bolts are a little long with fine threads.
  • sdmike2sdmike2 Member Posts: 2,909
Does that mean you got off work? Cool!
  • beach15beach15 Member Posts: 1,305
Oh, no, I wasn't blaming any of the mechanical difficulties we've had on the plant by any means. Those were DC screw ups plain and simple. However, what I do blame on the factory are the various rattles (you do the best you can and they aren't there in the beginning, but still) and a few misaligned pieces, mainly all the doors. It's not horrible, but none are alligned with each other on either side. From the side, the gaps look even but if you look from other angles, different sections of the doors either stick in or out farther from the one beside it.

Don't get me wrong, for the relatively value price of the LH cars, I don't expect things to be the ultimate in slow, intricate, highly detailed and perfect work. I'm still amazed at how well any car is put together after imaginging just how many parts there are. I'd love to see the plant in action some day, I'll have to figure out how to get to Canada first though! The closest plant (I think) to here is the Dodge Durango plant in Newark, DE and Saturn plants in Wilmington, DE. Those just don't interest me as much though!

No the Special doesn't have a true dual exhaust system. But it isn't exactly like the Hujo system either.

It has twin pipes running into and out of the collector back to the end of the tunnel where they merge into a single 3" pipe that wraps around the fuel tank and into the muffler which has two outlets. The exhaust then runs into a resonator on each side and exits in a single 3 1/2" tip on each resonator.
  • sdmike2sdmike2 Member Posts: 2,909
Did I read that right? The special has twin intermediate pipes from the front collector to the central muffler, AND it has two resonators? That's 4 mufflers if I read it right. I hear that it sounds nice though. Maybe the dealer will have one on the lot this weekend at our meet.
  • sdmike2sdmike2 Member Posts: 2,909
I've gotten a couple additional responses and it looks like we might have 13-15 cars with about 25-30 people! I know some that have said "yes" might decide not to make it at the last minute, but I'm also hoping that some that didn't respond will decide to come on over.

If there's anyone in the southwest interested in our meet, it's this Saturday (3/16), from noon until about 4. We'll have awards and door prizes, and a coastal cruise. It should be fun. More information can be found at http://www.ritchiefamily.com/sdmeet.htm.

How's 10:45 at the Starbucks in the Vons shopping center on Black Mountain road sound to you guys? That would get us up to the meet location before 11:30 so we could make sure everything is ready before people show up. We might even have time for a little Z6. ;)

What Otto was saying is that DC isn't responsible for how the vendor executes when they build the subassemblies. The vendor is expected to meet quality requirements but there's no guarantee they will.

What DC does is specify the design, the interface requirements to the rest of the car, and the cost target. After that the component supplier does the detail engineering based on the DC specs. How it turns out is totally the vendors responsibility. And so is the warranty. They have to reimburse DC for failures of their products. Of course if the vendors efforts fall short they either fix them or go looking for work elsewhere. A big incentive not to fail.

10:45 at Starbuck's sounds great! I'll see you there!
  • 300michael300michael Member Posts: 1,815
Sounds like a little premeet stragity session to me. So how many of us out of staters are comming? I would like to see some with out the front plates, so the cops don't pick on me. It sounds optamistic that we will be able to do the meet in four hours.
  • sdmike2sdmike2 Member Posts: 2,909
No worries, neither blonda or mrl859 bothered to put a front plate on their cars. lol. I'd take mine off but I have a couple of nasty holes under there. :) I haven't gone back and matched the respondents with their locations, but I *think* there's another car from Arizona coming and at least one from Northern California (which might as well be another state). There's nothing to keep the meet from running as long as everyone wants. I'm thinking that after the "cruise" we meet back at the Holiday Inn where some are staying. They have a big parking lot and a TGIF (Fridays) on site where we can socialize until last call. :)

I might ask a couple of you guys for some help with things. I plan to man the sign-in table and fill out the participation certificates, but I might need some help distributing tickets for the door prize raffle and getting people to vote on two of the award categories.

I'll have some woodtrim samples that I got from discount dash and joshua tree with me so people can see them, and I'll have club applications with me. I'll also have a sign-in sheet and voting forms for the award categories, but other than those things I'm not sure if I need to take anything else. Well, my camera for sure.. I had also considered taking some tools in case someone brought a new aircharger, cell phone holder, or something else with them, but nobody has indicated that they plan to ask for any mod help there.
