I have them front and rear, they're necessary in my climate. They don't look bad, but they don't do anything for the car either. Mine are stock black on a candy apple red M. I've thought of painting them body color, but i've never gotten around to it. They will scrape and car washes are hard on them. I'm missing the r/r one as I write. I'd recommend them for anyplace with enough snow that sand, gravel, and salt are constant companions in winter.

380 HP shouldn't be too hard to get out of that engine. After all if some can get an extra 45 hp out of our 3.5L then and extra 40 our of the 5.7L should be child's play.

If you got this you would be the envy of the 300 board LOL We use the exact same ones to reflash the cars at work . Imagine what you could do with it!!!

Hi folks. I'm about to make a very expensive move tomorrow and order a new 2003 300M Special in Silver with the light taupe interior. The sticker price is $34,250 which includes about everything that can be put on it at the factory. My local Dealer has offered to sell the car to me for $100.00 over the invoice price (the one that they will let customer's see) which equals about $32,384 plus the dealer and handling charge. The final cost is about $30,884 after the $1500.00 factory rebate. My question is "Is this a good deal on the 300M Special"? Also, I'm interested in knowing what kind of gas mileage I can expect and can I use the mid grade gasoline or do I have to use the premium. Are there any problems that I need to know about with this car before I plunk down that kind of money. I will appreciate hearing from you folks on this subject and I will respect any of your recommendations. Happy Thanksgiving to all.

Anyone put 15" steel rims for snow tires on their 300M? (naturally for winter driving)

(post answer here, or e-mail me -> sm5w2@hotmail.com).

Thanks to those giving advice on the chrome rims.

In terms of splash guards, I have a 2000 Dark Slate with splash guards and bra and get loads of compliments about the overall look. I have the 2003 Special in waiting and they are installing the splash guards on that as well. I love their look on the black vehicles. Now, getting those 18" rims chromed will really sweeten it.....
  • kosh_2258kosh_2258 Member Posts: 338
It looks to be about $250 higher than the price I got last year on my Special adjusted for the price increases since then ($330). I also took the $500 increase in rebate since last year into account as well. I only had a $25 "document administration fee". And of course tax, title, and license fees.

I'd push them harder on the price and get a definite number on the "dealer and handling" charge. That's a good way for them to make a few added bucks off of you. I'd be wary if the fee exceeds $50. Keep in mind they will get a refund from Chrysler of 3% of the sticker less freight, around $1000. So if they really want to sell a car they'll dip into that a bit, especially now right at the end of the month and year.

The owners manual recommends using 89 octane fuel, and discourages using anything above that. My average gas mileage, weighted heavily to freeway travel at around 75mph, is around 21-22mpg.
  • easyrider300measyrider300m Member Posts: 1,116
I beieve the Special recommends premium fuel only---the other M' say you can use midgrade or lowerer although midgrade (89) is recommended
  • herselhersel Member Posts: 6
Thanks for the info and I am going to the dealer today and see just how much "turkey" they want to talk. Good point about buying this time of the year and it being the end of the month. I had hoped to be able to use the mid grade fuel but I might have to bite the bullet and go for the premium. I just sold a 97 Concorde and it was the best automobile I have ever owned. If this 300M Special is as good as that one was, I will be a happy fella. Thanks again for taking the time to respond to my request and have a wonderful day.
  • kosh_2258kosh_2258 Member Posts: 338
I have a Special and neither the manual, or any of the other documentation, says anything about using 92 octane. 89 is what is recommended.
  • psterpster Member Posts: 293
I paid $30,000 even for my 1999 300M. I think $100 over invoice is good. However, I would INSIST they sell you the extended warranty for 1/2 what they offer it to you for. GET THE WARRANTY AND DON'T PAY THEIR FULL RETAIL. I LEARNED MY LESSON (just ask RUSS!!!)
  • ruskiruski Member Posts: 1,566
I am still in AZ. In Sedona. I am driving a rental TrailBlazer. It is nice. But I wish I had my 300M for these mountain roads!
  • dj300msdj300ms Member Posts: 3
Koch..I'm with you. Don't know why this premium fuel keeps coming up!
To quote from the 02 Service Manual Page 0-4
"Your engine is designed to meet all emissions regulations and provide excellent fuel economy and performance when using high quality unleaded gasoline having an octane rating of 87. The uses of midgrade, octane rating of 89 gasoline is recommended for the 3.5L HO engine. The use of premium gasoline is not recommended. The use of premium fuel will provide no benefit over high quality regular gasoline, and in some circumstances may result in in poorer performance."
What could be more clear than that! My 02 Special runs just fine on 89....don't waste your money friends!!!
  • kosh_2258kosh_2258 Member Posts: 338
I think that's coming up because the Chrysler website has a couple footnotes making reference to "premium" fuel when they list the 255HP for the HO engine.
They don't specify a octane number so anything above "regular" 87 octane can be considered "premium" for lack of a specific number.
Bottom line is all the documentation that counts says 89 octane for the HO engine.

We have the black Chrysler splash guards for the 300M on our "deep slate" '99 non-PHP. We also have Chrysler's black 300M logo bra. In Colorado, these are necessities for keeping the car clean and protecting the finish.

We still get a lot of looks when the 300M is polished up. I think the splash guards add a classy look to the car. Sort of a European touch. I've noticed some scrapes on the bottom of the rear splash guards, but nothing severe. We have considered replacing the black bra w/ the clear 3M film bra, like I put on our new Bravada, but I think the cut lines will show much more on Slate than on the Bravada's Pewter paint. Besides, I think the black bra adds character.

BTW, we also have the black Chrysler door edge guards on all doors. Protects the vehicle next to it in our garage and looks great on a "Deep Slate" M.

Dumped the BadYear tires and got 4 Yokohama YK420s today at Discount tire. I will have to get them re-balanced at the dealer with the high-tech balancer to get rid of vibration at about 65 mph, but otherwise what a wonderful change. My wife agrees that road noise is reduced and bumps now give a thump instead of a bang. What really surprised me was my wife feels the YK420s give the car a much "grippier" feel both straightline and when cornering. I guess I was so focused on noise and ride comparison that I didn't notice the handling and road feel improvement.

Thanks to the folks on this board for recommending the YK420s as a BadYear replacement. Now I'll have to decide on my next enhancement for ride improvement and noise reduction.

BTW, 2 of the BadYears were original tires w/ 19,640 miles, and looked like crap. The shop guy thought maybe another 4 or 5 thousand miles at most. Pretty poor threadwear by my standards. The other 2 were Goodyear warranty replacement tires w/ about 6,000 miles on them. They looked like a decent tire looks at about 20,000 miles. I am truly glad those tires are finally gone.
  • indydriverindydriver Member Posts: 620
In the interest of balanced reporting, the OEM Goodyear Eagle LS's delivered on my '99 were excellent tires. Decent in the snow and outstanding mileage. Finally replaced the OEMs at 53,000 miles. They could have gone another 5-10,000 if not for winter approaching. In pricing replacement tires, everything was at least 50% more, so why change? $105 each with lifetime B&R. The second set now has 46,000 miles, will get through this winter OK and probably make 60,000 before they are retired sometime next year. I do faithfully rotate and balance every 6,000 miles. That's 8 for 8 perfect GOODyear tires.
  • achanceachance Member Posts: 106
There are a couple of Ms here with 15" steel wheels and snow tires; Man, they're UGLY! There's not enough price difference to justify getting the gyypo wheel/tire combination. You can get decent and decent looking alloys for little if any more than steel. I got a set of 16" Blizzaks and alloys from TireRack for less than the local Les Schwab wanted for steel wheels and private label studless snows.
  • easyrider300measyrider300m Member Posts: 1,116
so you have about 100k on your M---is that mostly highway miles? How is the rest of the car holding up. What repairs have you needed on the M? Did you have an extended warranty?
  • cebtebcebteb Member Posts: 138
I noticed when cleaning the chrome plated Chrysler wheels on our '99 300M that some areas on each wheel had developed discoloration spots. I would have called them pits, but the surface is perfectly smooth. Off-the-shelve auto chrome polish had no affect on the spots. Any ideas as to the cause? More importantly, any ideas as to a remedy?
  • kosh_2258kosh_2258 Member Posts: 338
If anyone here has successfully fitted 15" wheels to an M they are invited to speak up.
The smallest size OEM wheel that has ever been fitted to a M is 16" and that was on the 99 & early 2000 PHP package. Since then everything has been 17" or 18".
I got a winter wheel/tire package from Tire Rack and the wheels are 16".

What I have learned in my experiences with buying new and used cars as well as with warranties is to Make sure the seller lists in writing what "ISN'T" Covered. This is exactly what the dealership mechanic told me AFTER I had several things go wrong with my 300M that they had me convinced in the office at the time of purchase would be covered if I extended the previous owners warranty. I'm kicking myself for not doing that because now, everything that has gone wrong "ISN'T" covered by that extended warranty after all. Also, the best time of the year to buy is when they want to make room for new cars at the end of the year. Rainy days are the BEST time to dicker a price because nobody wants to test drive a car in the rain or go car shopping in the rain for that matter. Make sure you tell them you are going to "leave the premises" for lunch or to talk about the purchase, or better yet, check on another similar car that is cheaper somewhere else. They won't let you leave the lot,(they even offered us to take the car with us!)That should get you the deal you want. That's been our experience anyway. Also, if you buy a used car, make it a previously leased car, you have a car that has been kept in good condition ,with low mileage and you don't have to pay that outrageous new car price. Heck once your off the lot you've lost $5,000 in car value if you buy new!

    Hey hersel,

I bought an '02 Special earlier in the Fall and I really love it. My color is Silver with the Light Taupe and the car has everything except the Smoker's Group and the Cold Weather Group. I use Sunoco 93 octane in mine and it runs good. The owner's manual does recommend the 89 octane, but the literature also says that the Special makes the extra 5 ponies when using premium fuel. I guess it's a matter of interpretation as to what constitutes "premium". 87 octane is basically weasel piss and I've regarded the 89 as "regular". Anything 90 and above I regard as premium. I'm a little disappointed at my fuel economy thus far. I've had all I can do get 20 mpg overall with the car and I've been fairly easy on it. The best I've gotten is 21.5 on a mostly highway tankful. It should be higher. At 2300 miles, I'm willing to attribute it to the newness of the car and am hopeful it will pick up a little with time. If not, I'll bring it in and see if there's anything amiss.

The only area you may wish to look out for is if you get the big 18-inch wheel and tire package. It was standard on my '02 but is an option on the '03's. There are tire balance issues with these large tires and the cars have a tendency to shake going down the road. I was able to get mine resolved under warranty, but it was a solution by brute force. They gave me the best 4 sets of wheels and tires out of 6 Specials on the lot. Mine was one of the 6. The car rides like a dream now. Another concern has been with how driveable the car is in the snow with the 18-inch wheels and tires. We recently had a snowstorm in my area and I can report that despite other claims, my car handled the snow very well. The roads were completely covered and it was slippery out there. Using the autostick for 2nd gear starts helped. I had no trouble, but I thank everyone who posted on this issue before as I was looking out for it in this snowstorm.

    Good luck with your purchase.

I'd like to agree with 300MSpecial about the 18" tires on the Special in the snow. I've had no problems driving in the snow........wait a minute......it doesn't snow in Southern California.......Never mind. :)
  • herselhersel Member Posts: 6
Thanks for the info. I ordered my silver "bullet" today for $100.00 over the invoice price and it should be delivered the 1st of 2nd week in January. I decided to go with the 17" wheels after I heard so many negatives on the 18" ones. I live in Colorado Springs and we do get a little snow and ice here at times. My Grand baby has already named the car "The Silver Bullet" because of the two hot pipes sticking out from the rear. She actually cried when I sold my 97 Candy Apple Red Concorde last week which she named "Brutus" because it was a "stout car". If the 300M Special is as good as that one, I will be well satisfied. Oh, the Service Manager at the dealership said that mid grade gasoline would run just fine in it and to pay for premium was a waste of money. We'll see when I have to drive it here in the high country and I'll keep an eye on the gas milage and report back to you folks after I have put some miles on it. Thanks to all for the valuable information because your comments and suggestions made my decision much easier and I sincerely appreciate the input.

I have a 99 300M with PHP, 16 inch rims, 40K miles, mostly city driving, Avg 19.7 MPG w/ Premium grade, Purchased new, Miami Florida

    Service Contract:
I did not purchase my extended warranty at the dealership. I received mail from Chrysler that explained the different plans, and what was covered. You have a year after the purchase of the car to decide if you want to extend your warranty. I paid $1300 for the Added Care plan 7Y/75K. I paid it over one year. There is also a maximum care plan only $300 more which thinking back, I should have gotten, but I am happy with the plan I got. As you can see from the info above, I do not put as much mileage on it as some of you do. How much have you paid for your contracts?

    Tires:
The OEM Michelins with the 16 inch wheels only lasted about 28K miles, and yes that was with rotation every 6K. The replacement tires were about $200 each...not worth it for that kind of mileage. Instead I got some Dayton Daytona ZR tires. Wow these are great in the rain. I never really took that aqua tread stuff seriously, but it does work. These tires really slice up the puddles, and I have never hydroplaned like I would with the Michelins.

    Problems:
Fuel Rail - replaced - I lost about half a tank of gas in about four miles. Gas spilling all over the place.
Window motors - all 4 replaced - the motors on the 99 were bad, as I know all 99 owners are aware of.
Struts and Springs - Replaced - They rusted out. Then the struts had to be replaced again in about three months because the car was hopping.
Transmission sensor - Replaced X 2 - Car would get stuck in second gear because sensor died.
Ignition switch - Replaced - Car had trouble starting and dash lights would flicker.

Unfortunately, my dealership fired my service rep...I guess he did too good of a job. He always got things fixed, explained everything to me, and generally kept me happy. Suddenly after the original warranty was over and the rep was fired, I was not treated as nicely. I don't go there anymore. I found another dealership that still treats me with respect.

    Recommendations:
If your buying a new 300M, I recommend the Maximum Care warranty offered by Chrysler. You will receive mail from other places, but make sure you get the one from Chrysler!
Also, if you finance with Chrysler, the auto-pay is the easiest way to pay. No checks, no postage, no late payments. Just make sure you have enough in the bank account to cover the payment.

And yes, I still love the car and expect to keep it at least the full 7Y/75K miles covered by the warranty.

No Mods to date, but after seeing the things done by my fellow 300M lovers, I'm starting to think about it...

Have any of you tried the Tornado Fuel Saver? Does it work?
  • ajpiiiajpiii Member Posts: 260
I bought my M off lease with 24k miles on her... at that time I bought the added care contract to cover me to 100,000 miles for $1100
  • easyrider300measyrider300m Member Posts: 1,116
didnt sign up for warranty--have 44k and just one out of warranty problem--door lock actuator on rear door is broken--I recommend autopay if financing through Chrysler as well---I recommend overdraft protection in your account in case you forget to keep enough balance to cover the monthly payment.

Save your money on that Tornado fuel saver. Put it towards a K&N aircharger intake instead... and do the duals for fuel savings and most importantly looks and sound..

You can negotiate an extended warranty with the Chrysler dealer just as you do with the price of the car. Don't pay full price.

'99 M with 42,000 miles. No out of warranty work. Knock wood (besides the repairs done after my daughter's school bus backed over my M :-((( ). In warranty, two window motors and a tranny speed sensor. All else is well.
Still have the oem Goodyears, they've offered none of the problems some here have experienced. A bit noisy, decent in the snow. I hope to get to next fall with them. Then, do I replace the tires or the car?

'21 Dark Blue/Black Audi A7 PHEV (mine); '22 White/Beige BMW X3 (hers); '20 Estoril Blue/Oyster BMW M240xi 'Vert (Ours, read: hers in 'vert weather; mine during Nor'easters...)

The warranty for my '00 300M ended in early November. About 2 weeks before that, I experienced a drivability problem (with dashboard warning light). I pulled over and called the 1-800 tow service. About half hour later the 300 and me were at the dealership, and the next day I picked up the car- ready to go. Problem was the tranny speed sensor. Seems this part fails quite a bit.

Other than that, only thing I've had replaced were a couple of the center caps on the wheels. These things are known to corrode and drop off.

No problems ever with power window motors...

Lots of problems recently with tires losing air from leaks around the rim. One went completely flat over-night (!).
  • ajpiiiajpiii Member Posts: 260
I walked outside this morning and noticed something strange with one of my wheels... the lip of the rim was bent outwards, no scratches or scrapes, just bent... Then suddenly I remembered a pot hole I hit on the highway that made quite a big bang when I hit it... Im guessing that was the culprit... Anyone know if a bent rim can be fixed ? Any recommendations for places that do this sort of work ? It figures it would happen this week while I still had the 20's on, next week Im switching over to winter tires on 16" steel rims...

Sorry to hear about your rim. Just do an internet search for wheel repair and you should find plenty of places like this one:

I have never used these people so I cannot speak for their work.

    >... any ideas as to a remedy?

I've used automotive polishing compound on a soft rag and they sparkle like new. Chrome is extremely hard and will withstand *mild* abrasives with no loss of surface material.
  • bigmike5bigmike5 Member Posts: 960
blowbyu- Thanks for the part number. Did they list a price for it on the invoice? Needless to say, although the problem replicated, the dealer could not solve the problem; and the recommended course of action was 1) turn the key to "on" wait a second, and then turn it some more to start it; 2) do #1 until the part fails so they will know which one to replace; 3) if it persists, keep turning the key off and on til it starts. Great work, huh?

No1trust. I have the OEM plain black flaps and had no problems scraping the ground altho an occasional speed bump must be taken slowly. They have lasted well for 4+ years. I actually wanted to go wider than the wheel well, but I got blank stares from the auto shop I was talking with about ordering me some that would have to be tailored to fit, so I gave up on that idea.

clear bra or otherwise. I have the 3M clear film put on by Ziebart for $159. Stongard on the net has a similar product but it is very pricey. I also have the OEM hood bra by Chrysler. I think the manetic bra company puts out a product that looks a lot smoother on the hood. The OEM bra has slight wrinkled areas where the creases are. The magnetic bra is comparably priced to the OEM one. I use it only on trips and in good weather. It is easy on and off. I am told that long term use without removal after rains, etc. can cause the paint to fade. I have seen no evidence that this is the case, and some of the Club members have the full layout, and none mentioned a fading problem.

Otto--Yeah, I asked about a possible starter problem, but got a shrug of the shoulders from the mechanic. He cleaned the groundwires connections and greased some areas but came up with little. They could not access the DC computer line to seek an answer from on high. The computer system on Friday was kaput. They promised to try again today, and I will call them to see what they came up with, but Blowbyu may have given me the answer with the ignition switch. I will keep everyone posted on this. I probably have one of the oldest M's.

On the battery shroud. I agree with whoever said it was a [non-permissible content removed] to get the shroud back in. I watched the Sear's guys try to for 30 minutes after the changed the battery. They also left off 2 screws and a clip. I am really only upset that the dealer's guy saw and noted this stuff missing and didn't come out and ask me if I wanted them to replace it while they had the shroud off again to check the ground wire. Would have been easy for the dealer's guy to do. Instead he just noted it as missing on the invoice. Can't wait to talk to customer service when they call me on how my visit went.

On Saturday Nov. 23, 2002 I became a member of the 300M fraternity with the purchase of my '03 Special. It's Graphite Metallic with Dark Slate interior and all options but the Winter & Smoker Groups. This is by far the best car I've ever owned. Even surpasses my '64 Fury 426 Max Wedge and my '73 'Cuda 340. (Both of which I wish I had back!) I'm a little concerned about fuel consumption so far since I'm averaging about 17 mpg. I'm attributing it to not being "broken in" yet, so I hope the mileage will increase with some age. Of course it could be that I just can't keep my foot out of it too!
Does anyone have any ideas on what kind of distance I can expect out of these 18" Michelins? And how well they work in snow? Indy doesn't get the nasty white stuff they get in more northern climes but it still does come down here on occasion.
  • cmyers300mcmyers300m Member Posts: 206
I have a '01 with the PHG package which includes 17" Pilots. I know the 18's on the special are a little different, as far as Pilots go, but so far they have proven to be good tires for me! I have 15k on mine and the tread is half gone. I think you can expect no more than 30k out of Michelin Pilots. I live in Southern Ohio, we don't get a lot of snow, but what I have driven in was fine as far as traction goes. Enjoy your new special. If mine remains reliable I'm planning on buying the 300N HEMI when it arrives!!!

Drove from Kansas City to Dallas and back this past week. I have a 99M, non PHP with 44,000 miles on it. I reset the trip computers and ran mid-octane gas for the trip. I had the cruise set at 75 or 80 mph most of the way, with an occasional burst up to 100 when the music on my CD player encouraged it :>). The computer average showed 25 MPG, and I'm pretty happy about that. This car is still the ultimate road car - the ride and comfort are amazing. The trip home had NW winds at 20-30 mph, but the car was rock solid all the time.

About mudflaps - I got them a couple of months after I bought the car since without them, the road crud on the doors was unbearable. My car is white and the flaps are black, but I think that it does add a little something to the look of the car.

Sorry hersel, that name has been taken already by my 2k bright silver PHG. Tell you what, though. You can have the Colorado rights to the name. Just stay out of Texas ;>)

Thanks for the warning about staying out of Texas but when I take the southern route back to Virginia (my home state), I usually go down to Amarillo and head east on I-40. I promise that I'll remove the "silver bullet sticker" before I cross the Texas state line just for you. Maybe I could name him Silver Bullet 5 or 6 or "high country Silver Bullet, or something like that.
But, I have to explain your warning to my Grand Baby and I'm just not too sure how she is going to take the news that someone else has picked the Silver Bullet name. Anyway, thanks for the words of warning. Oh, by the way, do the Texas Troopers pick on us people driving these "bad [non-permissible content removed] 300Ms" or do they just envy us and let us keep on keeping on?

Well, in Car and Driver(or was it Motortrend?) last night they had an article on the upcoming 300N Hemi. They showed a picture that looked like our current M's, but the front end was longer to accomodate the transverse rear wheel drive V8. The projected available date is fall of 2004. The Hemi should produce 347HP. Can't wait!!! Now the question remains, what's the cost? No news on that yet.
