That was one fast deer if she was going 55 mph. How fast were you going?
  • ashutoshsmashutoshsm Member Posts: 1,007
Ugh, sorry to hear about the deer encounter. Glad you're OK, & that its just minor damage, though.
  • newcar31newcar31 Member Posts: 3,711
I'm going to find out how much damage there was on Saturday when I take it in. I think it's just the hood and the grill. I still hate the fact that it will probably need a new hood. No more factory original Protege anymore.
  • the_big_hthe_big_h Member Posts: 1,583
go aftermarket and get a carbon fiber hood!!! :-D
  • newcar31newcar31 Member Posts: 3,711
Do they even make them for the Protege? If so, I don't think the insurance company would fork out the cash for one of those, and I don't know if I would pay extra on top of my deductible for it. It would be cool looking, but I'd get it painted anyway.
  • ashutoshsmashutoshsm Member Posts: 1,007
Insurance companies are happy (usually) to cut you a check for the amount of the repair, after deducting deductible (duh!). So I've understood/been told.

You can use that to partially fund the carbon fibe hood, and lose 15-20 lbs off the front of your car!

Of course, if an accredited body shop does the repair, they might also be more likely to find something else that's gone wrong, because of the deer collision, which you might miss if you were to just put a hood on yourself.

Or, you could speak to the body shop doing the rest of the repairs, have them deduct the price of the OEM hood, and you buy a CF one yourself and provide it to them. Labor should be the same, and you'd still have the 6/12 month work/installation warranty from them.

Doggone it Todd, why'd you BRAKE???

    ;-)

Glad you're OK. The car's fixable!

but I'm sure it costs more than an OEM hood. I honestly don't think there is anything else wrong with the car besides the hood. The black strip above the grill is loose, but I can glue that. The bumper and headlights appear to be fine. The damage isn't from the impact, I barely hit the deer. The damage is from the deer losing it's balance and falling on my hood.
  • dinu01dinu01 Member Posts: 2,586
if it wasn't for the hood.

A painted carbon fibre hood would be cool, but leaving it black/grey when you car is of another colour, looks too much like a scene from the fast and furious :)

Good brakes, it has. Pro brakes do not, too often, get the credit they deserve. Do you have discs in back? ABS?
  • patpat Member Posts: 10,421
Just a reminder that we can only display pictures we actually own in posted messages. Use links if you want folks to see a picture that you do not own.

    Thanks.
  • newcar31newcar31 Member Posts: 3,711
I have rear discs, no ABS though. ABS wouldn't have helped anyway because I didn't lock the brakes. I used the threshold braking technique.
  • townhall9townhall9 Member Posts: 78
I discovered a recently deceased one, in a State Park, two days ago. It, otherwise, looked healthy. It, apparently, laid down & did not get up. Everything happens for a reason. I will be practicing my emergency braking skills - ASAP.

I'll keep you in mind if I decide to sell, I own the car outright so trading up with a new car loan is a something I have to think about.....but those new Mazda6 commercials are starting to get to me!!! BTW, its a 2000 SE 1.6L manual with the power moon roof, picked it up at Downtown Mazda in May 2000.

'sport compact car' tested a bunch of pocket rockets and rated the mazdaspeed pro 2nd [best handling] and the neon srt-4 1st [fastest]. They claim the mazda is detuned to protect the tranny and suggest a less restrictive exhaust to increase HP. Zoom-zoom.

having now driven my 205/55-15 bridgestone potenza s-03 polepositions in town and freeway, rain and shine, I pronounce them to be the best tires I have experienced. I can pretty much pretend water does not exist, even deep water. They also look very natty, if such things are important to you.
  • mdaffronmdaffron Member Posts: 4,421
Had mine for 13,000 miles now and they still impress -- and very little wear noticed.

How many miles have you put on your S-03s Tom?

I've not hit deer yet (knock on wood). Had some dart in front of my car, but far away enough for me to slow down and let the others with it follow without incident (does and young'uns tend to travel in groups).

Smacked a dog lightly once with the side of my front bumper. He just trotted out from behind some trees on the side of the road (why do people plant trees right next to the road anyway?). I guess it was more of him crashing into the side of my bumper rather than me hitting him. Less inertia that way, which I guess was why he didn't seem to get hurt too badly.

Why an aftermarket and not an OEM hood? From my experience, they don't fit as well and don't have the same level of anti-corrosion protection.
  • mazdafunmazdafun Member Posts: 2,329
    Well, we will be tomorrow.

Red Pro and Silver P5 (I wanted red or yellow, but it's my wife's, so she stuck with silver).

She said she'll let me drive it sometimes too. Zoom zoom. :)
  • ashutoshsmashutoshsm Member Posts: 1,007
So that's, what, 3 2-Pro (sounds funny) families?
  • chicagoprochicagopro Member Posts: 1,009
But now all you multiple-Protege owners are making me feel like I'm not keeping up.

Maybe I should just go out and buy another Protege for my cats or something.

    :)

I guess I'll be staring at my wife's taillights a lot as her P5's 2.0L engine will easily whup the 1.6L in my Pro (especially since the slightly heavier P5 only has to carry her and my LX has to carry me). Ah, the price of progress. :)

I second Tom's assessment. I opted for the shorter sidewall 205/50-WR15 for my S-03s. I have put about 12k on and I absolutely love them. Looks like I can expect 35k or so with vastly improved traction in almost every conceiveable situation over the stock RE92's. I only managed to get 24k out of the original tires. The S-03's rule in all but the coldest weather. I put my Artic Alpin snowtires on this last Sunday, and the flakes are a'fallin' here in Chi-Town. Gotta love it!

    Regards,

    Pete

I think it'd be great to get another Pro when my gf is all done her Masters program, but I think she wants an Audi A4 of 3-series Bimmer. Go figure! :D
  • fowler3fowler3 Member Posts: 1,919
put Protegé badges on the back of her 3-series Bimmer. ;)

Well, if she can justify an extra $15.000+ CDN why not? Personally, unless I would make above $100.000/yr CDN, I see no point looking at that price range. Some people work to pay for their cars, others work to have a comfortable life and actually have time to enjoy it (trips, house renovations, etc). If I have to work overtime to pay for the car, that's stupid in my books, hence the PRO. However I see a lot of people doing this - working just to pay for their car b/c being seen in a small car isn't "cool", so they get a Prelude, A4, Maxima and pay, pay, pay...

Different people, different priorities. Ask her to wait one yr or two before getting into a 3series (to set herself up in a nicew position at work) - in the meantime she can buy a PRO and sell it back to you when she's done with it.

I got the spoiler, I guess you can say I have the "watered down" sunsport package that's offered on the 2001-2002s (spolier, moon roof.) See message 104 in the photo gallery.

Hey guys and gals have a great holiday! Remember all your loved ones in your dinner time prayer of thanks. We ALL have a lot to be greatful for! My wish is for all the Mazda Protegé Board and the Edmunds.com Town Hall Community, have a safe and restful holiday. My same wish for our close friends North of the U.S.A border. Enjoy a nice Thursday in Canada.

    Respectfully,
    Larry Kline

I guess it would make sense for her to get a Pro then sell it back within the year or so. But the thing is, the car has lost so much of its value in that year that you might as well have gotten the 3-Series or A4 in the beginning. Been there, done that.

I see that the 95-01 Proteges are recommended by Consumer Reports (in their 2003 Buyer's Guide) as "Best Bet" used cars. Getting a used 00 or 01 might be the way to go if you only plan on keeping it a short time.

Get Thursday, Friday, AND the weekend off? Impressive.
  • chicagoprochicagopro Member Posts: 1,009
Some of us have TODAY off, as well...sorry, couldn't resist bragging.

    Have a great holiday, everybody!

I was suppose to be off all week on vacation, but my new co-worker had his honeymoon this week. I came in to work so he could go, and gave up my vacation. It's pretty cool though, because there isn't much to do.

But most jobs give you off on Thursday and Friday, unless of course you work in retail. :) I will be getting up around 6am on Friday to start Christmas shopping. Should be fun. :)

    Happy holidays, everyone.

in Pa. at least, Monday is the big first day of buck season, so most take that day, or actually have that day off as well.

  • meinradmeinrad Member Posts: 820
you didn't get it yet Dinu, it's bambi with antlers that get shot that day.

Over 1,000,000 hunters in the woods. Always at least 3 deaths: 1 accidental shooting, 2 heart attacks.

Seems like a good idea though. Be a fat couch potato 99% of the time, then go walk miles through the woods in cold weather.

Any estimate on the repair yet?
  • dinu01dinu01 Member Posts: 2,586
I'm liking it! I always wanted to spend a day and night hunting, with all that hunting gear, using the wind to your advantage. Ah, the good life!

    Ok back to work.

Kinda like fishing at the cottage on a cool summer morning, but with deer, geese, etc...

  • protege_fanprotege_fan Member Posts: 2,405
I see hunting and fishing as 2 totally seperate things. Oh well.
  • newcar31newcar31 Member Posts: 3,711
No estimate yet. I'm bringing it into the insurance claims center on Saturday. I have a feeling they are going to want to cheap out and repair the hood like they did with my back bumper. I want a NEW hood, not a bondoed-out autobody special. I hope they can get the panel gaps the way Mazda intended.....
  • mdaffronmdaffron Member Posts: 4,421
With fishing, you fool your prey into thinking it has come upon a free meal. When your prey bites into the morsel, it finds that a large (in relation to the prey), barbed steel hook has impaled its mouth, gills, and/or side of its head. You then drag your helpless prey through the water by this wound, eventually forcing it to hold the weight of its entire body from this hook and wound as it gasps for oxygen. To remove your prey from this barbed piece of steel, you either twist it by its head or wedge pliers in its mouth to wrench it out. Either way, the animal dies of asphyxiation -- unless you're a "catch-and-release" fisherman, at which point you release your prey back into the water to try and resume its life with a bleeding hole in its head and/or damaged gills.

With hunting, you use stealth tactics to find your prey prior to it becoming aware of your presence. You fire a weapon whose round penetrates the body of the victim, causing severe internal damage to organs and other vital parts of the anatomy. If the animal does not die immediately, it will succumb from shock, severe pain, or after bleeding to death. I am not aware of a "catch-and-release" method for hunting.

Yep, I'd agree they're two totally separate things.

    Meade

    P.S. Happy Thanksgiving!!!
