I took spiano lessons when I was 4 or so and the spiano tutor told my mom she's wasting money on her little Beethoven :) Basically I can hum along pretty well to quite a few tunes, but that's just about it.

But seriously, what brand is this and how will it compete with the Protege?

I was referring to the link you posted in message 21123. Mazda makes the Spiano. It looks like a Scion.
  • dinu01dinu01 Member Posts: 2,586
Yeah it looks A LOT like the Scion. I wish we would get the Bongo Friendee here as a work van. It's more stylish IMO that Econolines and Savanas.

for a moment I thought we had another fellow rotorhead on this board.

'Rex' should only be reserved for when referring to Rotary EXperimental (aka RX) vehicles!!!!!!

    call it WRX!!!!! >:0
  • gandalf17gandalf17 Member Posts: 348
The Rex is fine, but I don't drive it much as of late. I will be changing that in a real hurry now that summer is soon to be upon us. My wife and I both work in the same office and we take the Protege into work in the winter and also to limit the mileage and salt exposure on little Rexie. We've been really fortunate not to have any problems with either car other than minor annoyances and the defective Dunlops's on the Pro that made me feel she was going to fall apart.

This summer's drink is still frozen, fresh fruit Dacquiri's and Margarita's. You just can't beat them for quenching thirst and coolig you down on a hot summer day. I also like my beer and red wine too. :) The wife is a dark rum (only) and coke kinda girl.

I'll take a pass on the CD changer as I'm pretty skint at the moment. I just had to pay for the boat going in the water and that is always a nice little lump sum to pay at this time of year. Fully worth it though. Also, we're going back to England for a couple of weeks and that doesn't help our financial situation much either...

How's your Pro been doing? Are you still workin' out of Consillium?
  • gandalf17gandalf17 Member Posts: 348
correction to my spelling of Dacquiri. I like doing it just to bug him. After all, he gets upset so easily I hear...... :)

Dacquiri, Dacquiri, DacquiriDacquiri, Dacquiri, Dacquiri, Dacquri, Dacquiri, , Dacquri, Dacquiri,
Dacquiri, Dacquiri, DaDacquiri, Dacquiri, Dacquiri, Dacquri, Dacquiri, cquiri, Dacquri, Dacquiri, Dacquiri, Dacquiri, Dacquiri, Dacquri, Dacquiri, Mazda Protege... :)

58.000kms so far and still driving like new. No issues except for that brake light that went out twice so far. Still at Telus. I'm actually going in today at 5PM.

Glad to hear your Pro is still doing well also, as are you. Our Pro has just under 72,000 km on her and celebrated her 3rd B-day today. Received a nice big, Zoom-Zoom birthday card from the dealer in the mail yesterday. Maybe I should display it on the dash or something. :) Actually, today is the last day our Pro is under warranty for the 3 years/80,000km coverage. I believe Murphy's Law dictates that she falls apart tomorrow piece by piece.

I'm actually doing a big project for your Mobility "Pre-paid" side of the house. It's been, uh, interesting. Good to hear you are still gainfully employed. :)

I'm gonna be out in Los Angeles in June and I want to see the Mazda HQ. Is it by the Taco Bell joint in Irvine?
  • the_big_hthe_big_h Member Posts: 1,583
Mazda HQ is near a Taco Bell?????????
  • newcar31newcar31 Member Posts: 3,711
I meant Taco Bell HQ. I remember seeing it last time I was there from the freeway. It's in Irvine and it looks like an office park type area so I figured Mazda HQ might be near there.

This weekend I did mostly highway driving (90% highway-10% city) at speeds of about 125-135 km/h.

    Fuel Consumption: 8.86L/100kms!!!

This is the BEST mielage I got out of the PRO in the last 6+ mths!!! I am thrilled! Yes it was winter before and the AC was on to defog and etc... BUT 8.86@130km/h is great!

It might not seem so good to many that have always gotten good mileage, but this is the best fuel consumption I've had in a LONG while.

Zoomster racked up 590 miles on Saturday and Sunday, going up to Lancaster, Pennsylvania to hang with Larry. (Had a great time, Larry!)

The 2000 ES 5-speed managed to rack up a total of 342 miles on the first tankful, and I only had to put 10.3 gallons back in 'im for a total of 33.2 mpg ... a new Zoomster record!!!

I have also installed a set of BFG VR4 on my Protege 2001 last friday and I like them very much at highway speeds. They are so smooth and quiet: I'm driving a 'Procedes' now :-).

But I found them a little 'bumpy' in town (the roads are very bad here in Quebec city). Do you have the same feeling on your car? What psi are you're running (I'm running 32 psi front and back)?

    Thanks,
    Pierre
  • manavimanavi Member Posts: 150
I usually have my tires between 28-30 PSI on my 2001 ES and it seems to be a good compromise between handling and ride comfort.

BTW, I participated in the Mazda Rev It Up thing at Texas Motor Speedway yesterday. It was pretty fun and I'm definitely glad to finally find out what that sort of thing is like (autocross). When we left at around 3:00 I had the top score for the weekend in the Novice group, but I don't know if that held up. Waiting for the final results to be posted at the official website.

    >>>But I found them a little 'bumpy' in town<<<

Bumpy as in like rubber mounts?
I think it is better than sending stiff shocks into the car frame...It will make the car body last longer..no rattles.
  • maltbmaltb Member Posts: 3,572
It's about 6 miles south of there on the same highway. The 2 closest buildings to it are Ford's PAG and Chrysler's western region office. Of course, within a mile are Toyota and Lexus' region offices, Kia HQ and Hyundai's new (and very nice) design center. Maybe I should sell my variant of maps to the stars' homes.

Required content: there are lots of Proteges around that area.

Send me an e-mail if/when you have specific dates.

As the proud owner of a 6s this morning, I must bid farewell to the Protege' forum as an owner. I will continue to read the threads as I always have, and comment where possible.

Wooo Hooo! The Kia HQ is right there huh? Sweet!! I guess it's too bad I won't have my Protege because I have to take a 757 there instead. I'll be in a Dodge Stratus or Dodge Intrepid because they were the cheapest to rent. Not exactly the vehicles of choice for SoCal but they were only $125 a week and they're pretty big. I wish I could have guaranteed a Protege somehow but it doesn't work that way with rental agencies. You get what they have. I remember when my Dad reserved a Mustang convertible in Florida and ended up with a Grand Marquis.

I was hoping to check out some of the tuner places out there too, I'll have to start looking on the net soon. Racing Beat is out there right? I'll send you an e-mail tommorow from work.

    Congrats Glidescope!
  • maltbmaltb Member Posts: 3,572
Racing beat is about 15 miles away in Anaheim, but there really isn't much to see there, although it's been a good 5-6 years since I have been there.

If you are going to be in LA, check out the Petersen Automotive Museum; definitely worth a visit.
  • newcar31newcar31 Member Posts: 3,711
Thanks, I'll definetely have to check that out. I have 7 days to kill. Do you know if LACR still has wednesday and friday night drag races? I want to see some drag racing too, legal or illegal.

Congrats on the new 6. Fortunately for me, I get to have my cake and eat it too. We have a Protege and a 6 in the driveway! Decisions, decisions, which one should I drive today? It's a good thing my wife helps me out with it, she takes the 6 (after all, it is hers) and I get the Pro. But, there's always the weekends!!!
  • mdaffronmdaffron Member Posts: 4,421
Driving along the highways of southeast Pennsylvania last weekend, I got to see some of the people heading to the Carlisle meet (and got to see a police helicopter involved in what appeared to be an impromptu "Type-R" meet held on the shoulder of I-83).

After the last MAPP (last October), seeing the loud and belligerent behavior of many members of the group result in unsavory comments from park patrons, admonishments by the park rangers and summoning of the state police, I see future MAPPs heading this way as they continue to grow.

Sad that a bunch of car enthusiasts can't act their age.

...we don't need to worry about you getting arrested for public nudity anymore. ;-)

Now if you would just let our irresponsible Protege-driving brethren use the name MAPP, we could hold you liable for everything bad that goes wrong the next time everyone gathers together.

    Hmmm ...
  • boggseboggse Member Posts: 1,048
We could start a new video series, "When Meades go wild."

Have you put any more thought into what tires to get for the P5? I am hoping someone tries out the Toyo TPTs soon, so I can get a good review of them before I have to buy. At 5000 miles, my P5 has 8/32" of tread left. Assuming uniform treadwear (big assumption with Dunlop), I should be able to get to 20,000 miles with these tires. At my current rate of travel, I should get there in about 18 months from now.

Whatever the specifics, it looks like the kids have provided a real-life example of entropy.

    Or is that apathy.

Well, one of those -y words at least.

Or at the very least they never, ever thought that organizing such an event just *might* require a little WORK. ;-)

I take my compliments however I can get them ...

like what they say, all it takes is one bad apple to ruin the whole barrel.

out of 40,000 attendees there were only 170+ tickets (and most of them are meaningless 'you have illegal taillight' BS tickets) and a comparatively small number of misdemeanors (ie 'Girls Gone Wild'-like shenanigans), but that's all it will take for a small farm town like Carlisle to reject future hosting of this show...

but fear not, there are more than enough other events of this sort to fulfill these guys' Fast 'n Furious fantasies.

btw I ended up not going anywhere this past weekend, got really sick and had a 101 degree fever on Saturday...
  • mdaffronmdaffron Member Posts: 4,421
Or for drunkenness, underage drinking or open containers. Nothing says "car meet" like drunk, naked teenagers.

Yep, them cops is just out to get people.

    P.S.:

"but fear not, there are more than enough other events of this sort to fulfill these guys' Fast 'n Furious fantasies."

Kinda puts your above post in its true context, eh?
  • the_big_hthe_big_h Member Posts: 1,583
that it doesn't really matter they cancelled it in Carlisle, that they'll just do it somewhere else?
  • manavimanavi Member Posts: 150
I'm getting the TPT's put on this week, probably tomorrow. So, I'll be able to give you a totally subjective opinion soon.
  • mdaffronmdaffron Member Posts: 4,421
I just read the article again. I count 266 rotten apples in this barrel.

And that was just at the car show. I can't find an exact damage amount on the trampled police car and all the trashed hotel rooms in Carlisle stemming from this quality gathering of fine, upstanding individuals.

I really don't think it's the size of the car meet that makes the difference. It's the age range of the participants.

Still, somehow I made it through college without exposing myself in public or trampling a police car.

    Thanks, Mom and Dad.

That is what I am after -- a complete and utter absence of cold hard facts. I want opinions! TIA
  • mdaffronmdaffron Member Posts: 4,421
I offered my opinion. I respect yours. There's no need to get nasty about it; this forum exists for opinions. If everyone agreed, there'd be no need for the Town Hall. Your response to my opinion was the very epitomy of what I was talking about: you flew off the handle.

Now, let's get back to talking about Proteges.

That is what the elderly... er, mature tend to do. It is not unusual for a few individuals to ruin things for the masses. Look at football hooliganism in Europe.

    ;-)

Here's a Protege thing, btw: I finally got to see the reason Larry is "protegextwo" Saturday. Outside his garage on his impeccably clean driveway sat two equally impeccably clean 2000 ES automatics, both resplendent in Emerald Mica.

(The fact that my Emerald Mica 2000 ES made three of 'em was icing on the cake! But it doesn't end there, my friends, NOOO ... ALL THREE had BFG Touring T/A VR4s on 'em!!!)

It was neat to see three carbon-copy cars with a combined 150,000 miles shining in near-mint-condition condition!!!

I too am getting the Toyo TPT's this week - will check in with updates as we put about 25k on our 2001 Pro per year. I have the original Dunlop 5000's still on and have 42k on the car - they still have about 5/32 left and still do fine on dry surfaces but make me nervous in the rain....and being from Seattle well, we celebrate the rain festival from Jan 1st till Dec. 31st. I am curious as to how quietly these tires will travel and how much handling I will sacrafice, if and - they are V rated tires but look awful bulky to me. Greg
  • mazdafunmazdafun Member Posts: 2,329
    :)

Oh, and my Mazda (1.6L) got during the weekend:

    Outbound: 29.5mpg, 33.4mpg (traveling 75-85mph)

    Return: 35.4mpg, 35.8mpg (traveling about 70mph)

Nowhere near its record of 38+mpg when I was cruising around Atlanta at about 45mph, but pretty good. I think the peak economy must be around this speed, which runs the engine around 2500rpm, and is just after the torque converter locks.
  • meinradmeinrad Member Posts: 820
Glad someone's getting them soon. I have maybe 3 months left on my 5000m's and need some more choices for replacement.

My original tires will be lucky to make 20k, so whatever replaces them I hope lasts a little longer!

From the Letters to the Editor, April 2003:

"Subject: Focus With Mazda 6 Engine
     From: Ben

It is my understanding from the Edmunds Town Hall that in N.Y., Mass. and Calif., people can now buy a Ford Focus with the new 2.3-liter, four-cylinder engine from the Mazda 6. I've driven the 6 and loved it, but it is a little out of my price range. If they are putting that same engine in the Focus, though, that makes it a mini-6, sort of. My question is whether the esteemed editors of Edmunds know more about this engine change and if so when will the rest of the country (I'm in Michigan) benefit from it? I love Edmunds! Nothing else even comes close! Thanks!

The 2.3-liter PZEV engine that's now available in the Focus in certain states is, in fact, the same engine used in the Mazda 6, but due to its stricter emissions controls it generates less horsepower and torque than the equivalent engine in the Mazda. This engine will be available in all non-SVT Focus models nationwide roughly a year from now. -- Ed. "

So, Foci drivers can enjoy the new motor, but Protege (nee 3) drivers will have to wait until later this year. That is not quite fair, but I guess Ford needed the low emissions engine now.

Without wanting to start something like a disk/drum debate, wondered if any one is using/recommending/switched to MOBIL 1. I am thinking of it at the next change (18K)
  • fowler3fowler3 Member Posts: 1,919
If Mazda didn't test the engine with Mobiel 1, then what Mazda recommends is what I would use. Just my 2-cents worth. Although, it is interesting that dealers selling the same cars use different oils.

Meade, sorry I didn't get to Lancaster. I had to stay close due to a friend being gravely ill. The family said they were so glad I came and I was, too. Holding his hand both of us knew it was the last time we would see each other. He died a few hours later.

BTW, last Fall, he said I am too old for Zoom Zoom cars. I had told him about the MAPP meets.
