    check the overflow container

if it's nice and clean and green, then most likely it has been flushed :-)

your good old AutoZone/Advance Auto Part/Pep Boys should have OEM-spec replacement filters (NOT authentic Mazda filters, but should work just as well) readily available.
  • the_big_hthe_big_h Member Posts: 1,583
you can always just go to the dealer parts dept and get one there.

    $12 - $15 IIRC.

    dark green or light green?

Right now it is dark green, but no visible contaminants floating.
  • the_big_hthe_big_h Member Posts: 1,583

Larry -- "Music Man," huh? I was in that in high school. I was Prof. Hill's sidekick, Marcellus Washburn, and I sang Shipoopi!!! Squeeze her once when she isn't lookin'!!! And BTW, I know AK&US is bluegrass. But since there ain't any bluegrass stations, they play it on country stations and cable channels. Hence my categorizing it as country. Of course, I don't 'xpect you damn yankees to know nuthin' 'bout good ol' knee-slappin' jingles from the land o' terbacky 'n corn-squeezin's.

Dale -- "All kinds of music (except country, of course :P) gets played in my Protege...I don't discriminate." <--- By your own admission, you do.

Raymond -- Hey, you should've reminded me. But c'mon, replacing an air filter ranks right up there with dumping your ashtrays. You really need to vvvvvvvvvvvFOCUS!

My rental car has a 6-CD in-dash changer, which I really love. Anyway, in there right now:

    1. burned CD from a friend (club music)
    2. One of those 'now' CDs (current hits)
    3. Eminem
    4. Goo-Goo Dolls
    5. Lil' Kim
    6. Janet Jackson

    Variety, anyone? :)

Anybody have an experience like this?
I have an 'O2 ES that I bought new 16 months ago. Everything is swell except...
In the last month or so, I've been getting water on the floor -- UNDER the floor mats on the driver's side. I doubt it's AC related, since it appeared before I started using the AC this year. Of course, here in Balto., it has rained almost everyday this spring. At first, I noticed it only in front. The dealer outsourced the work to the local "Water Doctor" two weeks ago. Guy told me the water was leaking from the "moonroof pan" through a "drain tube" that runs down the frame of the car to the floor of the drivers side. He said he sealed both. Guess what? We've had more heavy rains and the problem has reappeared, and is apparently worse -- the rear floor on the drivers side is getting wet, as well.
I'm getting another appointment, of course. Just wondering if you had any thoughts on what may be happening?
  • chicagoprochicagopro Member Posts: 1,009
That's the first time I've heard of the moonroof leaking...hope somebody here has some ideas for you.

Malt: Sorry, I hadn't even noticed that you had that group listed...unfortunate coincidence, not a slam against you.

Not to worry, though, I'm sure there will be other opportunities for me to dis you. :P

Mazda has really improved the car.
The dx has 195/55/15 poortenzas but the car is quiter than my '99 ES with BFG tires on the same patch of rough roads. Also the suspension is also more capable of soaking up road cracks than my '99 ES. And the beige interior with bronze center stack looks nice.

I have to agree and disagree with you. I recently turned in a 99 Protege SE and purchased a new 03 ES. Its like moving into an entirely different car, great rubber, improved suspension HP to burn, and great looking interior. The ES is one great little car.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
HP to burn? Are we still talking about a Protege?? You must have gone from the 1.6 engine to the 2.0. In that case, there is a pretty big difference.
  • kaiserheadkaiserhead Member Posts: 166
Funny, no one mentioned that they have the "Only the Strong" soundtrack in their CD players, shame on you.

Dinu: You need a copy of The Smith's "How Soon is Now" for that Maxima.
  • kaiserheadkaiserhead Member Posts: 166
I've come to realise that buying a Protege is like buying a computer, if you buy the best product on the market today, it will be vastly improved tomorrow and obsolete in four years. Unless, of course, you buy an Apple.
  • kaiserheadkaiserhead Member Posts: 166
The Protege will be changing climates this year, after three years, its moving from the heat and humidity of South Florida to the variable seasons and harsh winters of Toronto. Here's the question: what precautions should I take to prepare the Protege for the winter season? Its been maintained by a dealer in Ft. Lauderdale, but I'm not sure if the fluids they put in the car are designed for winter driving. Also, has anyone had their Protege rust-proofed?

There she was, shining in all her silver beauty. There it was, in my hands. So I took it, pressed it, she lit up, I pulled gently, she opened. Giddy up! ZOOM-ZOOM TIME!!!!

I couldn't resist. Took the PRO for a spin just to keep reminding myself what I'm missing. What a nice solid interior. Rattle-free ride, great brakes and an engine to put to shame that Acura EL (rebadged Civic in Canada) next to me at the light. The tach went to 3000 - I was in the sweet zone. Before I knew it, I was going 85km/h in the city.

Numbers don't do this car justice - who knew 130 ponies was enough to get going, do 130km/h on the highway with no effort and not have to brake when taking corners? Went 50km/h on an off-ramp rated 20km/h. HA HA HA :) Should have seen the smile...

I didn't even turn the stereo on - I wanted to hear IT, the car. And you know what? I prefer the PRO's engine song, as opposed to the Maxima's too quiet V6.

    To put it bluntly:

    I LOVE THIS CAR!

I got mine rustproofed by the dealer for $585 or $685 - can't remember exactly. As you know there are many rustproofing shops here. Check out Crown and Ziebart (sp?).

    "He said he sealed both."

What do you mean by that?

Usually when a sunroof leaks it's because the drain tubes are clogged. If you seal the drain tubes then where is the water going to go? Most likely inside the car.

I don't know how you do it, but you need to make sure those tubes are clear so that the water runs all the way down and out.

My car is headed into the shop tomorrow to have the control links from the front sway bar changed for a second time. the first set lasted 50000km, the second less than 20000km. the first time I had them changed the service rep told me this was a common occurrence. While still under warranty this is more of a hassle than anything else, but ultimately I fear paying for these things on a yearly basis. Clearly there is a flaw in the design, or something else is wrong with the front end causing premature failure. I do corner aggressively, but isn't that part of the reason for getting a Protege? Has anyone else experienced this problem? Any insight or advice would be appreciated
    thanks

I have posted this in the problems area also, but thought I would repost here to get a quicker response and wider audience. Hope you don't mind.

    Also, hi everyone.

Hi everyone. It seems I may be having my first Pro related problem. My car is a 2000 ES, 5-speed, with 74,500 kilometres. The car has been problem free to date, except for recently.

Here is what is happening. Essentially, my idle appears to be sticking sporadically, both while in gear and if the car is in neutral. For instance, if I am cruising at 60km an hour and take my foot off the gas, the engine will start to brake itself slowly, but when it hit's between 1,500 and 2,000rpm, the idle sticks and the engine stops braking itself. The affected idle seems to be in the 1500rpm to 200rpm range. I have also been able to simulate this problem by placing the car in neutral and slowly hitting the accelerator to about 1,750rpm and then removing the throttle. The idle will come back down to about 1,500rpm and then stay stuck in that position as opposed to coming back down to 700rpm which is the usual engine idle speed. I can "unstick" the idle in this state by tapping the accelerator quickly causing a brief rpm spike which causes it to drop back to 700rpm.

Please also note that if I brake while in gear, the idle does not stick and will come back down as per the engine speed. However, I do notice and feel the extra effort on the brakes since the engine is not, in effect, assisting the braking as it normally would.

I have also noticed that the engine performance is a little sluggish also. Not horribly so, but my wife and I both notice the difference. This problem is occurring when the engine is cold or warmed up and the check engine light has not come on and my engine temp is running the same as always.

So, my question is whether anyone has experienced this before with their Pro? Or, might know if this relates to any recalls or TSB's, or just has an idea what might be causing this based on mechanical knowledge.

All input/feedback would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Tim

Mine acts like this when I have my air conditioning (or defroster, which uses the a/c compressor) on. But it's closer to the lower end of your rpm scale, and after a few seconds at a stop, it returns to normal idle rpm on its own. But I can make it return early by tapping the accelerator.

    P.S. Discussion's gettin' dead again ...

I posted you my reply on the problems board.

On a seperate note, what has happened in here??? It's so quiet and hardly anyone is posting... I've been too busy again recently to come in very often, but I've never seen it like this.....dead.

    ... zooming!

    People tend to post when
    1. There is some excitement about a new model (see the Mazda 3 and Mazda 6 discussions!)
    2. They have problems (heck, this ain't no Honda Civic we're talking about! What problems?)

    Hence the silence?

    Hi everyone ,

I want to know what the heck is going on with the auto world . I have heard from a little bird that in a matter of a few years, buying a car, everyone in north america will have a set price. This means no more deals or discounting price or upset people . So from what i have been told, if you are in the market for a car,it's really not going to matter where you buy it cause the price will be the same every where in Canada.
Has any one heard of this?Or could you plz let me know if you have more information on how this is really going to work .

IMO, this rewards those that don't do their "homework" when going car shopping and penalizes those that do.

I look at Saturn and when I still see how the new ION is still more expensive than the Protege while being an inferior car, I don't get what GM's thinking. Yes I also considered all costs - freight, financing rate, etc...

  • smoke286smoke286 Member Posts: 9
Thats part of the reason the big three are still in business, I see lots of people going out and buying inferior, poorly manufactured cars, why? Because they always have and its too much trouble to find out what cars are better

It's not hot outside, not even warm, but acceptable. Pathetic when you think how in mid-June I still can't go out in shorts.

PRO-wise, since the car is driven much less now, do you think I should go from 4000kms/2500miles oil changes to 5000kms/3000miles or the Mazda-recommended 8000kms/5000miles?

I would like to add a strut-tower brace to my new Protege sedan (like the one of the P5). Does it involve any drilling or just bolting it on. Also, if I want to put mudguards on, do I need to remove the wheels to get those on. Thanks for any input. MM
  • mdaffronmdaffron Member Posts: 4,421
... showing how to install that strut tower brace. Hopefully he or she will see your post.

Mud flaps: Easy as pie. No wheel removal necessary. Provided you're talking about the factory ones, the holes are even pre-drilled for ya.

Hi Meade and everyone. : )
  • mazdafunmazdafun Member Posts: 2,329
Just take a couple pics of a P5 under the hood. You just take off the nuts on top of the strut towers, lay on the brackets, hand-tighten the nuts back on, lay the bar on the brackets and hand-tighten those. Then tighten everything back down. It's pretty easy once you have pictures of the finished product and the actual parts in-hand.
  • newcar31newcar31 Member Posts: 3,711
instructions from Mazda in PDF form. They were really good instructions with pictures. I e-mailed them to someone here and the posted the instructions on that "other site".
