I have the same rigg plus the 4x4. I was just curious to compare our fuel milage. I wonder how much less I'll get because of the 4x4?
I'm suprised even with the weight of our trucks you passed on the 4x4 with those New England winters. I always felt you just never know. It has bailed me out over the years. Good luck with your new truck!
Having trouble deciding between 3.73 and 4.30 axle. Planning to order F250 SC 4x4 V-10 auto. Would go with 4.10 for sure if it were available w/ V-10. I plan to put larger than stock tires on it (295/75x16) w/ aftermarket wheels. Anybody know how much the effective axle ratio decreases numerically for a given increase in tire diameter? Thanks for you help.
Don't think diameter, think circumference. Remember, c=pi*d, and don't forget that you need all 16" of wheel + 2x295/75mm of tire for the diameter. Work out the circumference for both, and do:
4.3 * oldCircumference / newCircumference.
I have a V10 with 4.30:1 gears and don't have any problem on the highway. With the larger tires you're looking at, I'd take the 4.30:1 gears without hesitating.
Let's do the math:
( 25.4 mm to the inch ) ( 16" wheels are 406.4mm tall )
235/85R16s stand (235*2*.85) or 399.5mm tall. This gives a total height of ~806mm stock. This translates to a circumference of ~2530mm.
295/75R16s stand (295*2*.75) or 442.5mm tall. This gives a total height of 848.9mm custom. This translates to a circumference of ~2667mm.
The ratio between these is 1:1.054.
Your new gear ratio is (4.3 / 1.054) or 4.08:1! Isn't that just about what you were looking for at first?
Hope you enjoy your new truck as much as I like mine.
I just got a nice 50 year commemorative blanket in the mail from Ford today. It is high quality and looks like it could become a collectors item. This is my third new Ford truck in 11 years. Do they only give these blankets to repeat buyers, or did all of you slugs get one?
stanford's right, it's the circumference that matters. but circumference is just a constant function of Pi, so basically, if you change tire diameters 5%, you change your final drive ratio 5%.
That is the first I have heard about balnkets. We purchased 2 or 3 '98 F150's and Ford did mail out a 50th anniversary "patch" for shirt or hat application for each truck purchased. It will be interesting to watch the mailbox. I would think others would have rec'd something by now with all the owners on this site??
I have one myself (blanket). The letter said it was going to all purchasers of '99 trucks, I believe. I could be wrong -- got it a couple of months ago. One of my collies loves it, so its part of her den now :-)
It's been 5 months since I spent almost 40 G's on a 99 SD. I have not recieved my blanket, yet! HAHAHAHA Production is backed up and the blankets are on hold because of fabric and the textile mill is closed for the holidays!!! HAHAHAHA Just a little humor!
Just a thought on the blanket issue. Last year my father's truck was wiped out by a drunk driver (dad is 75) and he asked me to do the wheeling- dealing at the dealership because he is not at ease dealing with salesmen. He picked out a new 1998 F-150 Lariat. About one month later a package came in the mail with two very nice fold up chairs in Ford Blue. The sales manager called a few days after and said that was a gift from Ford and enjoy. I told him that I had bought several new veh from Ford in the past and had never gotten anything like that and he replied that they pick out certain people to send a nice thank-you gift to for appreciation and to let you know they want to be you personal dealer. We did appreciate the chairs and I let them price my SD order first and they wanted $750 over invoice so they didn't get the SD order. Anyhow I still haven't gotten my SD so who won and who lost. So maybe I'll have a blanket to look forward to.. Keh4X4, for 40K , I would ask where my blanket is. The brown fish man.
Hey Gobrownfish, I only paid 30K for mine. But the way that my dealership treated me so poorly once they had my $500 deposit in their fist, They should have given me a headboard, mattress and box spring to go along with the blanket! By the way, how did you come up with a name like gobrownfish?
Once upon a time on Christmas eve, there was a very bad snow storm. And the fog was so thick you could cut it with a knife. What was Santa to do? Rudolph had a runny nose so he couldn't help out. Suddenly Santa clicked on http://members.aol.com/superd4x4/auto/index.htm The solution was right before him. He hooked up his fifth wheel flatbed trailer to the big red beast. The mighty Triton V-10 pulled harder than a dozen reindeer, let alone eight. And the load capacity far exceeded the old sled. And the crew cab kept the elves warm and dry throughout the night. And the Coyotes handled the snow with ease. Santa said, "This Super Duty is a delight", " Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night"!
I knew there was something special about you! I love to hunt Quail and pheasant with a fine dog! Pointers and Setters preferably! Oh how I yearn for the plains of Nebraska and Kansas! But I'm stuck here in the swamps of Jersey! Well at least it's the southern most part and close to the ocean! Hey was'nt that in a song? HAHAHA- Thats why I bought this truck. To cart 3 or 4 of my bird dogs to the mid west and hunt. The only problem, my wife just does not share my philosophy! HAHAHA
What part of the country do you live in, New England did you say? I think I should head to the mountains of PA and hunt some grouse! Thanks for the idea!
I will try to E-mail you a note. If you don't receive my E-mail let me know through this site. We might just exchange some "Big Boots Stories" during some of these rainy evenings.
I guess I'm too dumb to figure this out. I had your E-mail address up on my screen (by double clicking on your highlighted name), but then I backed out to post the above message that I would E-mail you a note, then it would't let me back to your E-mail. Only thing I remember is your name is Bill. Give me a shout at: rraybaldwin@infoave.net See you later. The brown fish man.
Well, since a lot opf you have received you trucks there haven't been much on the chat room lately. I hope to have mine by 1/11/98 according to my dealer. I was just thinking while I was reading gobrownfish and mroffshore messages to each other, since I am a member of a Classic Car club, matter of fact I am the president. Why don't we create a club of "FORD SUPERDUTY OWNERS" like other car clubs. I go to a lot of classic and muscle car show and shines where we all have a lot of fellowship and well, seeing who can tell the biggest story about their car. Mine is a 65 GTO Conv. which I planned to trailer to a lot places with my superduty. If there is enough interst we could even have meeting around the country. Since gobrownfish likes fishing, there is a lot of places to fish around here in Arkansas, trout, bass and cats so on. don't know much about quail hunting but ther sure is a lot of duck hunting around here. I would even like to take a ride up to mroffshore and gobrownfish areas. I am sure there would be other places. Wonder how much interest there is in a Ford Superduty Club or what does anyone think about this...I know of two truck owners here who would be interested. Any comments
I think thats a good idea if people have the time to participate. I have to laugh, I had a really nice 62 vette fulie which like soooo many of us had to sell when I got married in 1988. Well I would be trailering that to shows too if I had it!HAHAHAHA
A good friend just came back from a duck hunt in Arkansas, home of the razor backs I might add! They had a good time but the weather was too warm.
Lemans, I have yet to recieve my SD as well. I think your idea of a SD club is a great idea. Let's see what kind of response you get. Hope we can do it.
I would certainly be interested in SD club, well,as soon as I get mine anyway. Just for some info., I live in Minn. and am an avid Deer and Grouse hunter. I was always a Ford man until I decided to go with GMC for my last truck, a 97. Well, I just got rid of the GMC; way too many problems. Besides, I fell in love with the new SD. Now I am without a truck and am impatiently waiting the new arrival.
Hey Lemans, I think thats a good idea too. I am from the northeast part of Tennessee and love to hunt and fish. I have duck hunted Wheatly and Brinkley Arkansas for ten years.
MJE: Even though I love to Grouse hunt, I travel to Orr Minnesota each year to fish Lake Namakan and have for the last 14 years. Would love to hear about Grouse Hunting in Minnesota.
Mroffshore and myself have been talking about bird hunting but it would be a fine thing as we travel around this great country is to have a group of friends in a SD Club. That way we might get the opportunity to stop by and meet each other if in the area. Anybody that wishes to talk to me my E-Mail is in post 592.
Ok fellows, since you blew my cover and found out where I'm from, I have to say one thing: GO BIG ORANGE Good night to all Gobrownfish.
Just got back from Christmas shopping. While we were in Toys-R-Us, a little (3 wet, greasy ") snow fell so I got to try out 4WD high over an extended drive of 40 miles. My truck handled great, ran smooth, and got 10.5+ mpg while avg a SLOW 30 mph (people who can't drive in the snow, SHOULDN'T!). It didn't spin once or feel like it was loose at all (unlike the Ram 2500 that was ahead of me for awhile, or that Slowpoke Silverado ) Again, MUCH nicer than my 86 Bronco. I'm impressed, and boy, I sure do like my truck!.
Dennis in Maine - 99 F250 SD SC sb 4WD Lariat, V10 auto w/3.73ls 265 A/T wo tires etc etc 740 miles, 3weeks old ; Ordered 8/26/98, p/u'd 11/16/98 with 8 miles on it.
I want to be a gang banger...er...uh....CLUB member. So count me in. I have an idea, (I don't know if it is any good or not). How about if someone knows about making home pages if we (club members) sent in a picture of our trucks or us with our truck etc. The webmaster could put the photos in the home page. Maybe we could have a line or two under the picture telling what we like to do, where we live, what we use the truck for, etc....Just an idea. Buy the way, a little about me. I'm 42 and live in AZ. I used to hunt quail and dove quite a bit, but haven't hunted in about ten years. I have a German Shorthaired Pointer, but he doesn't hunt, he just pesters my German Shepherd. I prefer Largemouth bass fishing, towing my bass boat is the main towing duty for my SD. I also like four wheeling, especially early (66-77) Broncos. I have a 74 Bronco that I am working on making into a serious off road machine. I also like classic cars (I have a 64 Chevelle SS). So I guess you could call me a car/bass guy. Ken
Fishing in the lower 48? Is there such a thing? That's one of the main things that will be drawing me back to Anchorage. King salmon (Chinook), red salmon (sockeye) and silver salmon (coho) are my favorite. For smoking and canning, we'll keep some of the lesser salmon like the pinks, chums and dogs. If salmon aren't to your liking there are always the grayling, dolly varden and 20+ inch trout, amongst other types of river and lake fish. And then there is the ocean fishing where halibut is king, topping the scales anywhere from 25-400 pounds.
I haven't done any hunting up there, but a friend goes out and gets his caribou every year. I think he got over 400 pounds of meat off his last caribou. Moose hunting is pretty commonplace. Bear and sheep hunting is less common. There is all kinds of bird hunting.
Three more weeks and I'm on the road back to Anchorage. The Superduty will be loaded up and hitting the highway 12/31.
It been 12weeks, no vin, no sweat, reading the posts keeps me interested and patient... quail, wild boar, deer, duck, rabbit, big Frogs, rattlesnake and turkey are meats they raised the family on in Florida before the north moved down. nowadays raising a family in southern FLA(Flat Los Angeles) doesnt leave much time out for hunting. However, when the rig arrives it will be taken to the woods ASAP. later gators
Hey, check your SD for a hole in the metal in front of the air intake, if it is not there, the dealer will cut one. Improves performance.. Lee Haefele (the guy with the wrong brakes)
Can you elaborate a little on your post. I'm not sure if that also applies to SD's with the 7.3. If it does I'll do it for better preformance. Where do I look for this hole?
I have an F250 Crew Cab, 4X4, V10 and I have been experiencing creeking noises as I drive slowly. It sounds like it is coming from the the front suspension. Is that normal? Are others of you experiencing this same sound?
Double check that the make-ready folk didn't leave the spring braces in. Look for a piece of plastic between the two front leaves forward of the axle held on with black tape that says 'REMOVE' on it. My ride quality went up noticably when I untaped and pulled these out. They're intended for shipping purposes only.
ditto what Stanford said. I had an occasional rattle until my brother in law noticed them still in. I'm not sure if the ride improved, but that sound I had after a bump is gone now.
What's up guys!! We're back again...now waiting on a '99 SD, 3.73, L/S V-10, 4x4---ordered last week. I'm sure we won't beat our previous record---3 days inside of 8 weeks on our CC, V-10. But, we handed the keys in to the dealer. Which reminds me to say that none of you are locked in to any deal....remember that!! Just simply hand the keys back to the dealer---we took our new CC for a test drive of 24 miles---and then handed the keys over---that simple!! Great ride---just not the right time, nor did we need the extra doors. Final ?---anyone install a Banks system on their new trucks---to improve HP & torque. Thanks---JB

Are you sure it's not because they're having trouble with dark blue thread or the "shift-on-the-fly" hems on the edges?

There are three great loves in life:
I love to catch smallmouth bass (brown fish)
I love to hunt Grouse with a fine dog
I love to drive a top of the line Ford Truck
Enough said, You got a story to share ?
The Brown Fish Man..
