Their pale ale is always stocked in the fridge, and if you prefer, I will drive my Sierra over and get you some Black & Tan.

Tried Flying Dog last week, Tire Bite golden ale, gotta love these names.

Can anyone give me some input on the big difference between the 1500hd crew cab and the 2500hd crew cab. What king of fuel mileage can I expect? I currently own a 2000 1500 GMC 5.3/4.10 with 285 tires, love this truck, but I need a crew cab. I will not be towing much and plan to set this truck up the same way...4.10 with 285 tires. Any ideas...........
  • mledtjemledtje Member Posts: 1,123
Both of the trucks you mentioned come with the 6.0L engine, although the 2500hd can be equipped with an 8.1L or DuraMax Diesel.

With the 6.0L, I would expect similar mileage, with the 2500HD being a little lower due to more weight and taller profile.

Probably in the range of 12-16mpg. Some get better, some get worse.

If you're not towing, then go with the 3.73 rear.

I have an '01 Chevy 2500HD 4X4 EC SB 6.0/4.10. With the original stock 245/75/16 tires, I got on average 13 mpg (mixed city and highway - fairly heavy foot). After about 1500 miles with 285/75/16 mud tires, I am averaging about 12 mpg (difference is mainly due to the speedo being off which I haven't had recalibrated). I work with a guy who has a 1500HD 4X4 CC SB 6.0/3.73. He has been getting a little over 15 mpg on average (mixed city and highway - but doesn't have quite as heavy foot as me).
  • jsmisekjsmisek Member Posts: 16
I made some phone calls today to some tire shops to find out if it is possible to put 285/75/16 tires on a 2500HD, and they told me they will not fit. However, you just indicated that you have the bigger tires on your 2500HD. Do they rub? The tire salesmen all told me that because of the wider front end on the HD trucks the bigger tires would not fit, with either the stock wheels or aftermarket wheels.......

i have seen many pics of 2500HD's with 285's on stock rims without any problems

anyone put 255/85's on those rims (2500), new style (but not HD) 2500....aka my truck! (2K 2500 4x4)

    Any rub problems?

may slap new tires on before next winter?....will be a toss up for stock size or bigger

so Tim let me clarify your previous post

Has anyone put 255/85's on the 2500LD (light duty) rims?
  • hunter98hunter98 Member Posts: 273
I have them on my HD, they rub the left front liner on the back of the liner, where the E BRAKE cable is run, Im just not concerned enough to have fixed it after 11,000 miles. The rub isn't all the time and isn't very bad. I have the Kelly Safari AWR 255x85R16 LR D, which have a capacity of over 3000 lbs per tire. After 11,000 mile, they still look like new, and have great all around traction.

Duramax is still running strong. About 18 MPG average on my non towing tanks.

Today I went to my local Chevy dealer and they had two trucks sitting there with 285 tires on them. They said they have not had a rubbing problem. They are trying to talk me into a 2500HD with the Duramax. I drove one and I have to say I was impressed. Is the $5000 extra worth getting the Duramax if you are not going to tow very often? They also told me I would get around 20mpg with the Duramax after I put 285 tires and put around 15-20,000 miles on it. Any suggestions....How has the Duramax held up, what are some actual mileages anyone has been getting?
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
does the truck have the allison trans? If so ask the dealer if he will warranty it with those tires. There is a TSB out there stating if you have larger than stock tires with the allison trans they will not do any work on it till the original tire sizes go back on.

If i was you i would ask for the originals to keep handy just in case

    Joe,

I have just over 14K miles on my 2002 2500 HD CC Duramax/Allison. My dealer told me that the mileage would increase up to about 30K miles. So far he has been correct. The truck started out getting about 16mpg. Now at 14K+, I get about 20mpg not towing. I'm hoping that it will get up around 22mpg. I've run Amsoil 100% synthetic in the Engine/Trans/Rearend since the 1st drain at 5K miles.

Mine has settled to about 21.5 mpg average for all the driving I do, city + hwy. It's just a regular cab though, with ZF 6-spd manual. Love it!
  • jsmisekjsmisek Member Posts: 16
Thanks guys! It looks like everyone I have talked to that owns a Duramax loves it. I will probably either have one located,or my local dealer has a Charcoal Grey 2500HD Duramax/Allison LT Crew Cab on the lot. If he can make me an outstanding deal on this truck I will own it. Thank you for all your input......

Can anyone explain IN DETAIL the differences between the 1500HD, 2500, and 2500HD. I'm looking for specifics.
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
    2500.....8600GVW

1500HD.....basically an 8600 frame....but being a crew cab, it loses big time capacitys due to extra weight..not really a 3/4 ton, but more than a 1500....aka 1500HD

    2500HD - 9200GVW.......basically a 1 ton frame, with duelly's being the difference between a 2500HD and a 3500.

A 2500HD Crew Cab (9200GVW) and a 2500 Ex. cab (8600GVW) have the same capacitys.

    ....more confusing?

    3/4 tons ride very well......in Ex. or Crew....get a 2500HD

    Good Luck

I wanted to check the plugs on my Y2K Rado with 35k to see if they needed changing before heading across country. I tried to check them, but how the heck do you get the wires off the plugs? Mine won't come loose! And is that metal can around them a heat shield that comes off with the wire or is it attached to the plug? The wires don't seem to want to come off the plugs and I have a history of breaking stuff so I don't want to force the issue. I know that they probably don't need changing, but of the 35k almost 20k has been towing, so I want to check them. Any tips on getting the wire off the plug and what kind of plugs did you put in your's. Mine is a 5.3L. any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Steve
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
Buy a spark plug boot puller from an autoparts store. It will help you to get them off. That small dirt/heat shield will come off with the plug. Just reinstall when installing the plugs. They kinda snap into place.

Owners were saying that the plugs were falling apart, can't rememeber exactly what part but most have changed to NGK TR-55 or 55VX (copper or platinum). I've been running Torquemasters but have the NGK coppers installed now just to see how it responds.

Boy that Texas Motor Speedway can really give a Chevy 4x4 a workout. Who knows how many miles I put on that tow strap this weekend. What suprised me the most wasn't the Fords, but how much trouble the Dodges were having in that muck... Of course even a Chevy has it's limitations - John Deere's and Cats were the only things that could get them motorcoaches that were sunk to the frame out to the highway.

As we've said for the last 4 years, maybe next year it won't rain.

I am considering buying a Silverado to pull my 10K lb boat a very short distance (1/4 mile) about 20 times a year. The dealer has shown me both the 1500HD and the 2500HD both in almost identical configurations (Crew cab, 6.0, etc.)but the salesperson could not tell me the difference. It appears that they are identical from what I can tell. Are they?
  • blackmax200blackmax200 Member Posts: 255
Tim answered this about 6 posts ago (6136) rather completely... you might want to print it off and give it to the salesperson, of course providing Tim the copyright honors... hehehehehe

Get what you need and give yourself a safety margin in towing capacity, as you may get into something requiring it later... never fails to happen someone always asks if you can haul something for them...

    hope this helps

...always leave a margin for towing......

You could get the specs, and figure you are close to the max of a 1/2...or up there...and yeah....it will do it. But, I'd rather have 1000's of "extra" to be actually relaxed and happy when towing.

Kinda like an electrical circuit...figure 80% of the breaker capacity for continuous use.....aka a 20 amp would be 16 amps if a continuous load.....but for a burst...the 20 amps could be achieved.

80% may be a good number for trucks too?....if going small trips, I wouldn't worry. But, for me, I'd use an even lower number. When I push the pedal to go....loaded or empty.....I wanna go!

I have a 2500 and love it. To me the 1500HD is marketing to capture a new audience who wants a crew cab, but is scared of the "2500" badge. Todays trucks ride so much better than pappy's old ones....including the 2500HD's.

As said before, you CAN buy too little and wish you had more....but can't buy too much.

What are the load/tow specs for a 1500HD anyway?.....never really looked into them.

Just the suspension alone would be worth it for towing on the 2500HD to me.

    Good Luck

I am close to buying a gm soft cover

    Any comments?

I like it cause it rolls up and cheaper than the hard lid (save money and buy other things)
  • eric2001eric2001 Member Posts: 482
You can buy too much (from a gas perspective), but as for towing a 10K# boat 20 or so times a year, I would spend the extra for the 2500HD, but that is my opinion.

Ryan, I have GM's soft tonneau, and I like it over the snap styles I have previously owned. I never had any luck with the snap types in the cold, and this one came off & on a few times this winter without much hassle.
    -Eric
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
My grandpa had the snap kind on his 97 sonoma which i drove for 6 months while he in the hospital. I hated it. The gm one looks nice and have heard no negative things about it.

Also does yours have the bowtie on it? Can you post a pic if so?

    Thanks

    Ryan
  • eric2001eric2001 Member Posts: 482
Sorry, mine was plain, would have made them replace it, seeing as I own the big mouth bass (GMC)...

The nice part I found was using the edge as leverage for the cold install. Lifting the inner lip over the edge, you could actually start the edge in the groove, and then push down to pivot the side into place (easier to see than explain). Unlike snaps where you have to pull it in place, then try and snap it.

Are they giving you a decent deal on it?
    -Eric
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
The guy i bought my truck from is getting me a price sometime today (he started work at 2 and its 2:04 now.

Gm website lists it at $269.00 (they have a gmc logo and a #3 logo also)

Gmpartsdirect wants $209 plus shipping (which could be alot). Another chevy parts dept (heard about em on the web) wont ship them due to damage being incurred and not being able to send back to gm.

I also emailed a local parts place (chevy dealer) for a price. Havent heard back yet.

    Hopefully i dont get hosed

    Ryan
  • eric2001eric2001 Member Posts: 482
Is the $209 for the Bowtie (or Earnhardt) versions? Doesn't seem out of line for pricing if so, but then again they are notorious for outrageous shipping costs. Best of luck either way.
    -Eric
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
the earnhardt edition one is over $300. Guess you are paying for the name

Its like $40-50 more than the bowtie cover

    Crazy if you ask me
