Brake recall received and done two months ago. But then I spend more time at my dealer than you so I didn't really need a notice.

    backup sensor

I am having some custom stainless steel brackets made up cause there ain't no place to mount 'em on the rado. Brackets designed to sit above bumper and below tailgate. Will post pics as soon as I get 'em.

Ok, so my Wife and I went to the local Chevy dealer here in the Bay Area, CA to do some test drivin'. After finding a suitable test subject (4.8, 2WD, LS, 3.42), we hunted for a sales guy to find out at 4:55pm on Sunday that they close at 5:00.

Instead of getting discouraged, we drove home and cracked open the phone book and found one open till 7pm.

The sales people were pretty good about handing over the keys and letting us go. After having test driven a Toyota Tacoma PreRunner DoubleCab 3.4L V6 earlier in the day we were reasonably impressed. The Toyota had more leg room in the rear seats in addition to regular doors but the Chevy could seat 3 in the back and leg room could be fixed if the folks in the front scooted up a little. The ride height of both were comprable. The Toyota was more refined in the interior, but the Chevy had the stuff when it came to payload, power and the fold up-out-of-the-way rear seat vs. the Toyota fold-down-to-take-up-half-the-cargo-volume-with-no-storage-behind-it.

We also test drove the 5.3L, 2WD, LS, 3.73 axle ratio with bucket seats. Talk about power and with the bucket seats, rear passengers get heat and a/c via vents on the console.

One downer we noticed about the Toyota (Other than the sales idiot drove during half of the test drive) was that in 80 degree weather with 3 people in the truck for a 20 minute ride...the a/c never cooled the thing off. Hum...

    I got a 2001 Silverado LS 1500, ext-cab, Z-71 with 5.3L, 3.73 axle. 1250 miles on it so far.
    I live in western Washington.
On the last tank of gas I got 15.7 mpg, and that was about 60% city driving and 40% highway.

I recall a post about 2-3 months ago that said alignments under 7K are part of the warranty. Does anyone have a reference?

Appreciate someone posting Clay's URL. I lost mine.

    Thanks

10k miles for alignment per GM. After that you're on your own.

I don't get it. You are comparing a Toyota Tacoma to a Silverado??? Why not a Tundra, that's the direct competition.

It doesn't sound like you bought anything. Did you decide?

i'm new here, but as my name implies, i do like to talk alot. i just purchased a 2001 chevrolet silverado last night so yes, i'm pretty jazzed to say the least. it has the 5.3l engine w/3.73 rear ext. cab short wheelbase and tow package and bucket seats in graphite. i might have a few questions that have been covered before so i hope you will all be patient with me. one question that i have at this time is when should i really change oil? i know the book lists a specific guidline, but i never had much faith (yes i'm a worry wart) in what manufactures list for reccomended intervals. my experience in the past has proven to me that if you follow their guidlines that you are lucky to see 100,000 trouble free miles. friends of mine have serviced their vehicles on a sooner than reccomended interval and they always seem to get at least 150,000 out of their vehicles.
    thanks

Got about 250 miles on my new Z71 and noticed that it wants to pull to the left. Does it at any speed but alot more pronounced at higher speeds. Checked the torsion bar adjustment and it was about 1/2" lower on left side so I adjusted both sides the same and checked tire pressure. Still wants to pull left...any ideas ?
Planning on changing-out engine oil and filter at 500 miles. Going to use Mobil-1 dino oil and AC filter then switch over to Mobil-1 synthetic at 3000 miles. Does that sound like the right way to go ?
Want to get "nerf bars"..would appreciate advice on which brand is best. My truck is pewter...chrome or black ? Also...where is the best place to buy them ? Thanks

The oil change topic has been discussed a lot in this topic, and opinions on how often to change the oil vary as much as opinions on which type of oil is the best to use.

For me I changed my oil and filter for the first time at 1,000 miles. From then on I change both the oil and filter every 3,000 miles. I use regular Mobil 5W-30 oil and I use the AC Delco PF59 oil filter. My dad (with his construction company), along with myself, have done this oil change method with all the vehicles we've ever owned and it is easy to get 150,000 miles out of them with no problems.

I've never tried synthetic oil, but many folks on this topic have. It appears that you don't need to change the oil as often with synthetic oil, say every 6,000 miles. But the cost is 4x as much as regular oil. So I'd like to see 12,000 miles between changes with synthetic for the additional cost vs. regular oil before I change over.

How do you tell when a 2001 Silverado was "born?"

Anybody know anything about running boards? I went to the dealer and they said they didn't have part numbers for 2001 running boards. If there are different kinds, is one better than another?
    Thanks

nerf bars: i got mine from westin. they're the westin platinum cps nerfs. lifetime warranty. the ran about $356 and i installed them myself. you can prob'ly expect to pay $40-50 to have them installed. see them by clicking here.

oil: i use mobil one 5w30 (synthetic), the ac delco pf59 filter and change every 5k miles. as others have stated, there are many reasons why to use this and not that. sure, synthetic costs more, but to me, it's cheap peace of mind for less than it costs me to go to jiffy lube, i can change my oil, filter, lube and know all the fluids are getting checked - it costs about two hours of my time. also, whoever was talking about changing at 500 miles, personally, i think that's too early. i'd wait until 1,000-1,500. you're not supposed to use it very hard until after 500 anyways. my first change was around 3300 miles and i didn't change to m1 5w30 until 10k miles. been using it since (over 20k miles now) and it works great.

Don't get black or chrome -- both will quickly chip and rust.

Get stainless -- they look good with pewter, and will last forever. Mine are "Luverne" brand, and I got them at the local Truxstore.

1000 for first change seems to be average here.

I went about 980 then Regular Mobil for 3000,then Mobil 1 5-30 with Delco Filter.
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
Light comes on about 3800-4900 miles, then whenever I get around to it.

average about 5-6000 between changes with the 6.0 - same would apply for the 5.3
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
Nerfs - don't get black - they rust very fast.
Chrome plated stainless or solid stainless are best.
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
I got a set of boards that are kinda like boards and nerfs.....solid stainless....$1100 though....ouch..what was I thinking?

Nice looking boards. Who makes those and where did you get them? I wonder if they will have any that will fit the 2001 Crew cabs. I know Westin has the platinum nerfs ready but that's about all I have been able to find so far.
  • bcobco Member Posts: 756
westin's provide the best of both worlds. they have chrome plated stainless (hence the "cps" designation). lifetime warranty for finish and function too. not too shabby now.

sf0383 - tim's boards are made by putco.

pulling to the left- its the tires. you may correct it by having the dealer rotate the tires, preferably have them replace them.
Nerf bars-the only way to go is stainless.
Mines pewter also and they look and hold up great in the stainless.
  • gabby5gabby5 Member Posts: 7
thank you for the reply. i was thinking along the same line. it seems that there is quite a lot of info here. never new that people could post pictures in here.

i see you guys are talking about nerf bars, kinda got me thinking about them now. are these westin's the best you can buy?

also my truck came with the general 255's (icckkk) is there a tire that some of you guys reccomend for a replacement?
    thanks
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
    Putco.com

Dave40 turned me on to them....ended up getting boards....rails..skins..all in stainless..

so tim, you are pretty happy with the quality of these boards? BTW that's an awesome looking 3/4 you have. must be proud of it huh?
  • tex6tex6 Member Posts: 96
I have the same problem as Bob, except with a pull to the right. I do not doubt your answer, but please clarify how it can be tires if pressure is OK. Thanks!

I picked up my factory ordered Silverado 1500 LT, Forest Green, Tan Leather, Ext Cab, SWB, Z71, Locker, Tlr Pkg, BSW, tonight. I paid $25 over invoice, but then came a pleasant surprise. I was disappointed that the North Central region (where I reside) was the only area of the country not getting the $500 rebate on this truck. When I walked into the showroom tonight, my salesman greeted me with, "I've got some good news". I got a $1000 Chicago Auto Show special rebate, but because the rebate doesn't take effect until Saturday, we wrote all the sales paperwork up with a 2/10/01 sales date. So, my final price was $975 under invoice!

What a great way to start a relationship with what should be a great truck!!!

Next comes a Permatech spray-in, Westin step bars, GM bed rail caps (they match the standard tailgate cap exactly), GM molded splash guards (have bowtie emblem on them), and a custom Deer Creek dog box. I'll put all the accessories on this weekend.

I'm thrilled to no longer being a Silverado Owner Wannabe and to join the ranks officially.

Congratulations! It sounds like you got a great deal. With that list you gave, you are going to have one busy weekend.
  • vince4vince4 Member Posts: 1,268
If it's pulling to the left, the first thing to check is tire pressure and after that alignment. Let the dealer figure it out.

On oil, the never ending debate, I think around 1000 miles for the first change is a wise precaution. I used regular oil for about 10k miles, following the old rule about ring seating. Others here will disagree, but I think it's safe to assume dino oil isn't going to hurt the thing for 10k miles. Then switched to M1 5-30 and Delco Gold synthetic filter. On my first batch it was only about 1/2 quart low after 3k+ miles (6.0). I plan to change it at about 6000 mile intervals to help offset the cost and reduce the hassle. Even at that, I believe it offers better lubrication than regular oil.

I have noticed that the rear of my truck has ''settled''My neighbor got the same trk and his is higher in the back like mine used to be the dealer said it is the springs that settle, I liked the higher rear look, guess there isnt much you can do if it is the springs...Changeing shocks wouldnt help regain height???????
  • john294john294 Member Posts: 56
marvel mystery oil claims to also work as a gas stablizer can it be used in newer trucks for that reason or will it damage injector parts........and if going from pennzoil 10-30 to mobil syn 5-30 you just drain old oil and add new oil and thats it,no need to redrain again after a few miles to get any remaining old oil out ??????..thanks
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
Mine did the same. In fact the springs sagged so much that the truck rode level with no load on it. Surely enough, dealer took one look and had springs replaced under warranty.

Marvel Mystery Oil....would the dealer honor warranty for adding a mystery oil to your truck? When switching from dino to syn, no need to "rinse" out the motor like you had a blown head gasket.

congrats...hope to see pics of the "green machine" soon! welcome to the club and i think i speak for many of us when i say, "beer's on you" for getting such a great deal!

fyi, i've got wade bed rail caps that are very close to the tailgate (not exact) that ran about $50 or so less than gm's bed rail caps. got mine at perf products for about $75 delivered if i remember right.

everything sounds great though...gotta be one beautiful truck. wish i had the cajones to go with green. it's such a pretty color. black just called to me...ya know. anyways...wahoo...congrats!

Thanks!! Yeah, that deal is pretty unbelievable. If we ever get together, I'd be happy to provide the first case and a bottle of my favorite, Wild Turkey Rare Breed.

I'm not digital camera capable, so I'll have to borrow one or a scanner. I'll try to get pictures online after all my accessories are installed.

    gabby5,

I got the Westin CPS (chrome plated stainless) step bars on my 2001 ext-cab Z-71.

Lifetime warranty against rust, flaking, chipping. I bought mine locally and I think it cost me around $400. I feel they are the best step bar out there, a little expensive, but I also feel that you get what you pay for.

Go here to see pictures of my truck....click on the pictures at the left to enlarge it.

    cowboyjohn1,

I ordered my truck in early Nov. 2000. As time passed I got a production build week of 12/4/00. When I picked the truck up at the dealer on Dec 19th one of the pieces of paperwork that I got called out a final buildup checklist of what was installed on the truck including all the the options I wanted. The date on that checklist was 12/6/00. I assume that would be the born on date (12/6/00).

Cheap-assed plastic fog lamp fell off my '01 Silverado LT last night. Anyone know of a REAL fog lamp that will fit that spot (no, I'm not gonna buy a whole replacement air dam just to get fog lamps).

    Hans
  • smart99smart99 Member Posts: 48
Talk on brother talk on. Those fog lamp are so flimsy I don't know how mine are still on and I only have 8000mi on my great white rig. The fog lamps have to be the poorest design feature of the truck.

After your replacment did they settle somewhat again or is the rear at the same height as when dealer put new springs on ???? I havent loaded anything heavy in the back of trk ,Ive got appox.12k on it now.Is there a way to check besides it ''looking level'' to determine if it is caused by faulty springs or is it a dealer issue????Because looking at mine it does look level compared to the way it was ,how much (if any) drop is normal.....Thanks ps spoke to dealer about gas stabalizier he said use it every 6mts and to use good (name) grade gas and change oil regradeless of mileage every 4mts if trk is going to sit for extended periods with little use.
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
Yes, they did settle again. But no where near the previous "level". I think it's about 1/2" - 3/4" kind of hard to be too accurate. Previous settling was about 2". Never did overload the truck either. Most carried was about 800#. The only way the dealer could tell was by how level the truck sat without a load. The only problem is that I've added a Roadmaster active suspension to give the truck better stability so it's hard to tell if it's sagging again or not as the Roadmaster is supposed to add 1000#'s additional carrying capacity.
  • blukngtblukngt Member Posts: 3
Mine pulled to the left. Dealer checked pressure and adjusted alignment. Same problem. Rotated tires and resolved problem. Their answer- not all tires are created equal, slight variances in manufacture.
  • gabby5gabby5 Member Posts: 7
david thanks for the info on the westin's. although the putcos on tim's truck look pretty good, i'd probably have to say that the westin's are the ones to get considering cost. can't justify the added expense of the putcos just to put your foot on.

vince- i know what you mean by debates, not much can be said these days without someone wanting to argue over it and getting upset. i think i'll go ahead with oil change at 1,000. can't hurt right?
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
I wouldn't say unstable....less stable would fit the description better. Roadmaster active suspension helps to reduce sway, bottoming out with load, and adds additional carrying capacity though I wouldn't exceed GCVW.

I put on PIAA 1500XT driving lights. They fit in the hole perfect. I also was able to use the original wiring harness, with no modification (in case i ever wanted to put the original POS lights back on). The only tricky part was modifying the brackets that came with the lights to make them mount to the original plastic mounts on the truck. I can go into more detail later if you are interested. The lights are 55watts, but put out 85watts of light. VERY bright. Much of an improvement. I still use the original fog light switch on the dash. The fog light circuit has a 15 amp fuse. With the newer lights being 55 watts as oppossed to the original 27 watts, the total draw is about 9 amps, with about 6 to spare on the circuit. No problem. The only drawback are the lights are kind of pricey. You can check them out at PIAA.COM
