How do I reset the Change oil light that flashes in the message center when I first crank the truck. Had the oil changed last week and noticed the message came up yesterday. I know this is probably in the manual but it's outside and I'm in here.
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
    turn the key to run

    (do not start the truck)

Press the gas pedal 3 times in a row with no hesitation. It should flash 3 times then go off

I ordered my truck and told the dealer I didn't want Firestones or Generals. He claimed ( and I believe him ) that he didn't have any say on what brand of tires only what kind, on off road, blackwalls etc. Sure enough it shows up with Steeltex and so far I'll have to admitt they seem fine. 4600 miles may be a little early to tell. I got the cheap wheels planning on swapping out tires and wheels but now wish I had paid the $110 for the nicer wheels. It's gonna cost me a helluva lot more than that to switch wheels.

Sorry never replied about the pumps

yea i am working with centrifugal pumps (goulds)

Fun stuff need to change the impeller and the motor HP to increase the gpm. And changing the hp means changing the motor which means i have to make drawings for a new base. As of now the pumps efficiency is at 47% (bad). For some reason its running in the 5>7.5 HP range with a 15 hp motor. Wasting energy is all its doing.

    Ok back to topic

    Yesterday no hail damage WHEW.

    It's built Chevy tough!

Your dealer is right .... he can't specify tire *brand*, but you can still order what you want installed.

I wanted Michelins, so my dealer bought 5 locally, installed them as part of the "dealer prep" and charged me the difference in his cost over whatever came on the truck from the factory ($137 -- $27.40 per tire -- I never even saw what brand they were.)

thanks for the tire printout advice you gave yesterday. it helped my friend in getting the results he needed. he's gonna opt for Michelins.
  • erikheikererikheiker Member Posts: 230
When I found out my 2001 had Firestones I too (not to or two!!!) tried to get the dealer to substitute another brand. I also got the "we have ours built to (not too or two!!!) different specs" speech. I haven't wasted my time at the local Firestone dealer, who I know is an independent dealer. The tires were great this last winter. Excellent on snow and ice, even in two (not to or too!!!) wheel drive. Too early to tell what tread life will be. Truck is seven months old today and I'll hit 4900 miles sometime today. My only real dislike, other than the fact they are Firestones, is that they throw pebbles like crazy. I'm always hearing them hit the wheel wells and nerf bars, and I have flaps. I'll just keep on monitoring the situation to see if they ever get recalled. As soon as that happens, or when they wear out, I'll get the Michelins at Costco for $169. I personally have never cared for Firestone. I remember the infamous Firestone 500 recall decades ago. Then they had the almost as infamous Firestone 721 recall some years later. So my confidence in Firestone has always been low and from now on I'll refuse delivery if so equipped.

my biggest complaint next to the traction was stone throwing. My tires were like pitching machines. The bfgs do it quite a bit less.

Traction sucked on the fstones. I could squeal the wheels anytime i wanted. With the bfgs its tough because they grab so well. Snow fstone sucked especially in the 2ft stuff we got in dec. Feb snow storm the bfgs worked awesome never even needed 4wd.
  • erikheikererikheiker Member Posts: 230
We must have different snow! Mine Firestones were great on snow and ice. Next I'll have to test them in dirt and mud. Would do that this weekend but g/f and I are heading south for the weekend and we have to drive her Ford Contour...yuk!

    WHERE YOU FROM ERIK?

We get thick snow from lake michigan

    Ryan
  • erikheikererikheiker Member Posts: 230
I'm from Alaska. Living in Anchorage right now. We get both wet and dry snow. Roads are slick most of the winter with a thin ice coating. We use sand, but no salt here. Perfect AutoTrac territory. Beats shifting in and out of 4WD all winter long or tearing up the 4WD system by leaving it engaged all winter.

On my '01 Bonneville SSEi the "traction assist" option can be turned off or on and it stays that way until changed.

On my '01 Silverado LT you can turn if off, but it automagically comes back "on" the next time you start the truck. Anyone easter-egged around to find a way to change that behaviour to stay either on or off, based on last selection?

the Z-5 is suppose to be used to eliminate swirls, then go to the Z-2.
found the michelins at Americas tire center for 106.00 bucks, and that includes mounting and balancing +road hazard warranty. anybody know of a place that sells em cheaper?
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240

I have a 2000 Silverado with 5.3L engine and 4.10 rear. At approximately 4000 miles, the truck developed a whistling noise which became noticeable at approximately 45 MPH under steady throttle. Neither the dealer or Chevrolet had a clue about what the fix should be (or Chevrolet would not admit that they did). In any event, I came across some one on this web site who had the same problem, and the fix was to replace part or all of the gears in the rear end. I took a copy of the post to the delivering dealer, and they and Chevrolet replaced the entire rear end. That, in turn, took care of the problem.

Unfortunately, after another 4-6000 miles, the problem returned. There is now a service bulletin which suggests some software reprogramming. I did not have much faith that this would fix the problem, and, guess what, it did not. I have a feeling that I will be in another correspondence course with Chevrolet. HAVE ANY OF YOU HAD THE SAME PROBELEM AND, IF YES, WHAT HAPPENED? Thanks.

    ...who you foolin' Willis?

...as for the BFG's not sqealing.....that would be the loss of power going to the 285's

    LOL

I have a chance to get a Chev 2500HD 8.1L LS 4X4 CC LWB with the 6spd like you have for $31,400, with all the fixin's. It's one of two within a 400+ mile radius of me. How do you like that 6 spd? If you could do it all over again, would you go with it or the Allison? I have never owned an automatic tranny before, but due to the distance, I will not be able to test drive this truck before purchase if I get it (they have to sell by end of May to receive some big dealer bonus and I don't have time to go test drive before 5/31 to make a decision.) I have test driven the Allison and it is nice. Just looking for your opinion.
    Thanks!

me about the Line X bedliner? Is that the spray on stuff? How does it work??

    Thanks,

    Jim
  • minikinminikin Member Posts: 389
Line X: Yes, it's one of the spray on stuff(s). IMHO best of the bunch. Works at least as well as, and pretty much better than, the low pressure versions like RhinoLiner. About $400+ otr in black.

Looked at you're pics last night. Nice truck! Was thinking on the way to work this morning -- 1) Kinda the same question as Dave; how do you like the 6-spd & any regrets over not getting the automatic? 2) Realize I should already know this 'cause I'm sure you've posted, but what kind of fuel mileage are you getting with that DuraMax?

You are absolutely right and I have just begun! How do you think Line X compares to any "traditional" plastic bedliners???

    Jim
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
    here we go again...

Line X is harder than the Rhino ....and I feel the better choice of spray ins....

...but spray ins can't take abuse like a drop in....aka what a liner is for right?

Spray ins don't move and wear the paint.....but with a good fitting drop in....this doesn't happen much either....and it can be taken out.

I like the looks of the Line X....but chose a drop in as they can actually handle shovels and hard blows....which I feel a spray in would just leave a dent in the bed ...not even protecting it.

    Both have their use..

    Good Luck

I finally got around to checking out my spare tire and I sure am glad I did. I assembled the three rod sections and tried for 10 minutes to lower the spare. I finally figured out that you don't use the third section! So when you all check it out, make sure you only use the first two sections. The third section, which is the one with the slightly hooked end, is only used with the jack. The open end of the second section fits over the cable hoist drive mechanism. Once I figured it all out, the tire came down without any difficulty. Just be prepared to get dirty! My spare had lost only one pound so I bumped it back up to 35 psi.

It's been over 2000 miles since I did my first oil change. I was pleasantly surprised to see my oil level was still at the full mark. I'm now at 4901 miles after seven months and one day. Hours are 208.1, for an average speed of a blazing 23.55 mph!

ryan - thanks for responding to my questions about floor mats/liners for my 2001 extended cab. I'm confused, you stated that your husky liners have the "spikes" on the bottom and they stay in place well. I looked at your pictures and compared them to the on-line husky pictures and you appear to have the same "liners" that I have in my suburban which are smooth on the downside. The on-line husky catalog lists the spikes ( "SPIN", Sta-put Nibs ) for their "floor mats" but doesn't mention them for their liners. Their floor mats have alot of raised ridges without high sides compared to the liners which have the "diamond plate" pattern and raised sides.
Do you recall or can you look up your part numbers? Liners should be 31301/ 61351 (front/rear) and Mats would be 51031/ 52011.
Basically, if I can get the same liner that I have in my suburban with the spikes to keep them in place, I would be happy!
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
Ill take some close up pics of the bottom when i go back outside and ill try and see if i have the receipt dont think i do but ill get ya the part number

Does anyone zaino their rims? If so which Z do you use? I have half the truck done with Z2 the scratch and swirl remover. After i finished washing the truck it started raining. Might be sleeping in the garage tonight it wont fit :(

    Thanks

    Ryan
  • minikinminikin Member Posts: 389
I prefer the Line-X to the drop-in; by far. The softer, low pressure spray-in liners seem to be pretty susceptible to shovel damage and gouging, but the Line-X holds up really well. I don't use my truck commercially, but the bed gets the usual abuse that comes with home remodeling materials, firewood, gardening dirt/gravel/concrete retaining wall blocks and haven't had any problem with it so far. It also leaves the drain holes in the front floor of the bed open. Can be spot repaired if it gets damaged. If you have any spray in done, make sure they mask off the three bolts on the inside of the tailgate. Otherwise you have a problem if you ever need/want to remove the tailgate handle.

are you using the Z-2 or the Z-5 for elimination of the spidering?
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
elimination of spidering? You mean fine scratches? If so yea i have nice fine scratches mainly in the hood

64 - the model number of my floor mats are 3130

let me get my popcorn going........LOL

so Ryan, you are using the Z-5 first right?
at first i used Z-2 on the wheels, but have gone with a carnuba wax instead, as it lasts longer and resists water spotting better...
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
    what red?

I have Z5 and Z2 at my house

which is safe to use on the alum rims?

Hey do you have yahoo messanger?

If so get go to it

check out www.zainobros.com i think there some good tips about sals product, and if ya email him, he'll usually email ya back within a few hours.
i used the Z-5 for swirls and spidering(took about 4 coats) and then the Z-2 which i believe is meant for clearcoats and is also the final step. of course the Z-7 is really the final step, but it's not a must.
Z-2 works on the wheels, plastic, chrome and anything else that isn't black or rubber.
