couple of local gas stations (speedway and mobil) are having price wars. Both are down to $1.40

Shell where i go is $1.56 (which is 1 mile away from both is these places)

done with what? Seasons are changing which means the air changes

how many of you rotate your own tires? I am planning on doing this tomorrow.

Give me some advice never did it before

    Thanks

(i know bring the rears up and cross the fronts to the back)
  • redsilveradoredsilverado Member Posts: 1,000
where you are at, but out here we have a place called "America's Tire Center", and they do rotations for free regardless of where you buy tires. but get this, they hand torque anything that utilizes disc brakes. i rotated once myself, but after words said never again. even a place that charges 12-15 bucks makes it worthwhile to let them do it.
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
I have free tire rotation for the life of my tires but i dont want them screwing it up. They over tightened them last time. Also they are always packed.

    Im doing it myself

I do have an air gun to get em all off so that wont be that hard. I wanna do it so i also can inspect things and see how hard itll be to change the shocks (i am very close to getting bilsteins)

    Ryan
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
I wouldn't recommend changing your own shocks. You may be in for a surprise. The rears are a piece of cake...it's the fronts that are more difficult than a beginner should undertake.
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
If you should read this....I love the post in the Sequoia topic....you should have seen the responses.
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
Yep the rears look real easy

I can get my pops to help with the front

Hes going to be adding new shocks to his so two extra front ones shouldnt matter much to him (yea right)

Ryan, rotating the tires is no big deal, as long as you have jack stands to support the truck. If you are going to cross the tires, you will need 4, and will need to take all four wheeks off the ground. Work on a level space and be sure to use a torque wrench in a build up of torque as described elsewhere.

you dont even need jack stands. i use the spare tire instead. i always start at the passenger front (no reason, just where i start) - put the spare on and then take the other tire to the driver rear and then just working my way around the truck.
  • ricschricsch Member Posts: 540
changing these(on a 2wd) aren't too bad, just need to hold the rod on the top from turning and loosen the nut. With the front wheels off and going through the wheel well seem to be easier than reaching over the fender or grille. 4x4's shouldn't be any worse.

    Ryan,

TireRack web site has good info on tire rotation or anything else on tires.

    http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/rotate.htm

I'd post the pictures here but I can't. I've been reprimanded by our gracious Edmunds host for infringing on copyrighted materials. Opps, maybe I wasn't supposed to even say TireRack or Edmunds, they are copyright protected names? Oh I give up!

thats what i was thinking of doing

I do have jack stands and ramps if i need em

    Wish i had a lift :(

    Ryan
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
    Hey Ryan

drive it up on ramps and let me know how it goes for swapping the tires.

    - Tim
  • punjabpunjab Member Posts: 102
    Ness,

Unless you have a Silverad base, or paid extra to get an aluminum wheel on your spare, that spare tire won't match the rest of 'em...(unless of course you are demounting the tires and are just rotating them independently of the wheels, but that would be a waste of time...)
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
I didnt mean it like that.

I have access to ramps if i ever need em for anything i didnt mean for the tire rotation

what do you think i am an idiot?

Also PUN yea it is a waste of time. But hey i have time to waste friday night. Drink a few cold ones and rotate my tires.

    Ryan
  • ness5575ness5575 Member Posts: 29
i dont keep the spare tire on, i just use it temporarily while i go around the truck. the last step is taking the spare back off and putting the last good rim on.
  • 4x4man4x4man Member Posts: 222
I rotate my own tires as well....I put the vehicle up on jack stands and then zip the lugs off with my impact wrench....swap 'em and tighten the lugs by hand, then torque the lugs with a torque wrench.

I better make sure the summer air is in the tires before the trip to Gunnison... :-)

    are your guys jack stands

i dont see how itll hold my truck up seem to small

    Ryan
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
Maybe you have the Tundra jackstands....BWAHAHAHAHA!!
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
Ryan...the tires just have to be off the ground enough to get them on and off....and the frame sits lower than the body. Don't really need too big of jack stands.

    I've been doing them every 8-9 K about.....wearing like a charm!

    - Tim
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
every 5k. Since the truck is on the rack to lube and change oil, might as well rotate. Does make it easier to have the rack tho....

    Happened next to an asylum.
Unlucky owner scratches his head. What to do?
Just then, a guy in strait jacket walks up and suggests, "Why don't you remove one nut from each of the other wheels?"
Owner says, "That's a great idea. What are you doing in there?"
Nut replies, "Mister, I'm just crazy. Not stupid!"

Has anyone changed or is a need to change
anymore. Every once in a while truck will
hesitate on acceleration. Air filter is a
KN so its ok. Another items is when start
motor jumps sometimes, make one think a mount
might be loose. Right now this items don't
appear critical but may just be the beginning.

    2001 with 4.8 L engine:
Just changed my oil after 750 miles. Was surprised to see it dark and a moderate amout of metal at the tip of my magnetic drain plug. Filter was also very heavy.
Owners manual claims capacity is 6 quarts. I added 6 and the dipstick reads in the midrange.
    Anyone else noticed this?
Should I add more oil or just watch and add if it drops lower?
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
Manual says 6 quarts. Add 6 quarts. The dipstick has been known to be off by exactly what you're describing. I would mark the spot where it's at and use that as your full line.

    whitevette01

The hesitation has been resolved by some by changing spark plugs to the NGK TR55 (copper) or TR55VX (platinum). Apparently some of the stock platinum plugs have been falling apart.
  • mrurlmrurl Member Posts: 116
Can you elaborate on the spark plug issue? My wife's Blazer has an intermittant hesitation/stall problem that has defied diagnosis. Could it be the plugs? Would the computer pick it up, or would it not leave scan codes?

    Peter
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
The owners who have changed their plugs didn't have any scan codes. What they did have was a rough idle and hesitation on acceleration. Check out the link below and do a search via the block on the top right. Either insert NGK plugs or rough idle and should give you some posts on different solutions

    good luck

  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
never really thought about changing them

Whats the benefits of the NGK?

Just pop the old ones out and new ones in?

    Ryan
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
you have to gap them first.....
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
    Ok...I want to order a 2002 HD CC LT....Carmine.

I will have the bottom and flares painted Gold and need to know if anyone out here knows if the GM two-tones had a different kind of flare to be painted..(aka a dull finish before being painted)...VS the glossy black ones?

    Thanks in advance

    - Tim
  • quadrunner500quadrunner500 Member Posts: 2,721
I think the easiest way, (or at least ONE way) of viewing the color combos is to go to GMbuypower.com, and "build it" your way. It shows what your truck looks like.

It won't matter whether it is dull or glossy before you paint it. Paint will adhere either way. It will come with a carmine colored flare for LT I'm pretty sure.

I really like the Carmine/Gold combo. As Ryan says, it makes you look more "seasoned." LOL!
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
I thought Carmine would come with Black flares?....I thought just about all 2500's are black flares?

..we got a 2500 now.....now just get rid of the lower trim crap!

..I can deal with the upper.....but the lower ones are terrible..

    I love the concept though

     - Tim

  • quadrunner500quadrunner500 Member Posts: 2,721
GmBuypower site doesn't have 2002 HD info, but for 2001, Carmine Red LT has black flares.
  • quadrunner500quadrunner500 Member Posts: 2,721
    the STANLEY CUP CHAMPEENS!!!

You oughta get the 2500 Avalanche that you can. Besides, it's closer to what you want, and does what you need. You'll get used to the fenders and lowers. Looks much better in person. I've seen it, in the 1500 flavor anyway.

They are massive...frame rails waay up high...
  • quadrunner500quadrunner500 Member Posts: 2,721
And all you need to customize will be a grill guard up front like Ryans, and some giant light beams for the roof. Guaranteed to get line checked more often when you drive that Avalanche in Red Wing territory.
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
I think the carmine/gold would look really nice. Honestly i think it would be a sharp color. I also like the silver or gray on the bottom also.

In town there is a black over gold truck (early 99) that looks really nice.

Carmine trucks do come with black flares. Seen a 2500HD CC today and it had black flares.
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
Woohoo took me about 30 min. Got filthy (tires were dirty)

Only bad thing only had two jack stands. Put those in the rear and jacked the front up. It looked funny missing its wheels.

I also like the looks of the wheels without the center caps. I took em off and brought em in to soak in simple green. Also took off bedcaps and they are in my basement need to take the tape off em (my mom is gonna love seeing bedrail caps on the basement floor)

Also with the front tires off it doesnt look that bad to change the front shocks. I just wanna talk to BCO!!! whenever he gets back before i add the bilsteins. They are coming i started getting prices.

Also took some pics of the dogg in the bed tonight ill have em up in a little bit.

    Have a great weekend everyone

OH YEA those damn 285's weigh a ton. Wore me out changing them

..problem is....it has a 1950 lb hauling capacity!

....8600 GVW sounds the same as mine.....but throw in a CC configuration and payload goes from 3400 to 1950!

    No thanks

....2WD was 2250 or so....(due to less weight of tranny/diffs)

saw a 1500 up close last week (Avalanche)....got to mess with the gate and window...etc.....cool idea man

    ..just lose that damn trim!

I'll take the HD Ado where in CC it has about the same as my EC now for capacity

  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
Every day I drive by a 99 1500 that is Carmine with Gold flares and bottom.....it has been the best color combo I have seen yet.

Tom Helm said he paid the dealer like $600 to have his done....and they messed up with the cost...and it should have been $2800 or so?.....sounds high

I'll have my painter buddy do it for me....much cheaper.

On another note.....A guy I know gets barely used 6.0's some how.....like they needed a small amount of work or something?....for cheap...I may get one and use it for a car or something in the near future.....we will see

On a 3rd note.....when the HD gets ordered....I'm gonna have my buddy at ASC get me a Power moon roof....if I can get multiples.....any others want one?

I can have it installed by local pros who do all of GM's concept vehicles...for a few cases of suds.....(for mine anyway)

Have to go out of town so truck will have to
run as is next week. Not enough time to pull
    the old plugs.

Never thought about the plugs since suppose
    to go 100,000 miles.
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
the moonroof will be paid for....about $1100 at a retailer.

Don't know exact price....but I was told it would be much less.

Good Luck on this one now!

$2800 was what dealer had in my paint job after the first guy screwed up. Doing it right without having to correct the first job should be about $1800. BE SURE the shop that does yours orders NEW side trim from GM. All shops have told me the tape that comes with replacement trim is much better than anything they can get, even though it is made by same company...3M, I think. Side trim is not expensive. Also, have the shop agree to set the bed back so they can do a good job on the back of the cab. Flares will probably be black on Carmine...but if they are not dull finish, shop will have to refinish them. I would have shop order dull finish replacements, then paint them...less chance for prep errors. Just my $.02 worth. Good luck!

finish I have seen yet for stock black flares, and I don't have to worry about the paint getting chipped in parking lot dings. My truck is white with black flares. The GM parts direct representative said that the paintable flares are the matte finish ones, which are more expensive. Of course, I got the stripper flares, not the deluxe LT flares. :):)
