Anyone out there try the throttle body spacer on any of the 5.3 ado's they are saying that you will gain 14hp and lots more torque and 2, 3 more miles to the gallon?
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
do you honestly think you will gain 14 hp and 2-3 mpg?

Do a dyno before and after you will be surprised.

I bet two Z71 stickers will add more HP

Has anyone heard about a repeat of Edmunds Live! this year? Did GM's Auto Show in Motion put Edmunds out of business? Edmunds Live! was the best $15.00 I have spent in a long time. Great time driving any of the 120 cars available....

sounds VERY good. (at least on the 4.3 V-6) Especially on the X-cab (longer tailpipe). One thing I've noticed with the new engines (4.8 and 5.3), is that they don't have as good an exhaust tone as the old TB 350 did. I have a 5.3 and had a 4.8 both with Flowmasters and even though they sound good, they don't sound near as good as my '92 350 did.

Does anyone know if the 2002 models are out yet, and if not when they will be hitting the lots? I haven't been able to find out much info on the internet. Am trying to find out what changes were made between the 2001 and 2002 models. Found something that said the truck is the same with the exception of a few different options. Also trying to find out if they are offering the same colors. FYI, a month or so ago I posted about my 2001 Silverado having a lean. Looks as if it was tied down on the truck too hard (or so they say), which caused my frame to warp. Am going to be pursuing a buy back with GM with the assistance of a local service manager. Figured this late in the game, might as well jump to a 2002 model vice a new 2001. Hope someone will have some info to help me out.

    Thanks,
    Barry

2002's have been hitting lots for about a month now.

Changes none really. That orange color is no more
  • txyank1txyank1 Member Posts: 1,010
and was surprised to see 2002 Pontiacs setting right out on the front row with 2002 right on the windshield so you could tell them apart. Usually this early they have them stuck in the back someplace.

finally got to test drive a sierra reg cab with the 5.3 liter and 3.42 rear end with the limited slip. Rode really smooth compared to my sonoma and really had lots of power!!! I only have one complaint about the truck. Seems as if it takes a long time for the brakes to respond. Its as if I have to press the brake pedal halfway to even get any response. I found my self stomping on the brakes a lot instead of gradually like on my sonoma. Is it just the truck or is that normal??? Other than that, really makes me want to get the silverado/sierra. If you live in the Atlanta Georgia area, dealer I went to said i could get any 2001 trucks for invoice, not including any rebates. He claimed there was a $1,000 rebate, so i could have gotten the sierra for a grand under invoice. Hope i can get this kind of deal when i get my truck.

for '01 Silverados 1/2 ton ext. cab is $2500 in Milwaukee - highest i have seen yet.

I was just up in the Sierra Nevada Mts over the weekend with my 1999 Chevy Silverado Z71. Above 5,000 feet the "service 4-wheel drive" light kept coming on? By the time I made it back down and got home (near sea level) the light quit coming on. Is this normal? I was afraid to engage the 4-wheel drive, so missed out on some potentially fun drives on some of the back roads.

the 2002 silverados are out! just picked up mine tonight. peweter Lt Z71. I ordered it 4 weeks ago. I was very surprised when dealed called yesturday and said it was in. to bad they couldnt lacate the 01 I was looking for, the incentives are great on the 01's, oh well its only money. I can say that this truck is whole lots better than the 99 that I got rid of. no more freaking wind noise from rear windows and the trans shifts tons better. hopefully the have been putting good pistons in there motors now. would hate to end up with slap on a new truck.

ryan: please say again how your ride felt after you made the torson bar adjustment.

obyone: on a scale of 1 to 10 how would you rate your "pv" system? I heard back from gibson on my problem they said there really isnt much they can do to help, except change my muffler. But I dont think that will help the lack of performance issues. they also said they are having problems with the single in dual out mufflers on some cat back systems and they are working the issues. to bad for the unsuspecting consumers that are buying "known problems".
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
i cranked it up a total of 4 turns. Gained about an inch

I think the ride is better. I have less bounce on bumps

I am getting mine aligned on friday morning so i can let you know how much it was off then
  • minikinminikin Member Posts: 389
No, that's not normal. If it was, every one here in Denver and up into the foothills would have the problem. And mine doesn't come on at sea level, either.

I like how you have your dad's S-10 back 15 or so feet to make it look eaven smaller.

    About time for some 315's?

If i rear ended the S-10 id knock off the cap

It is not normal. I've had my truck in the same mountains in 4wd and the light has never come on. Time for a trip to the dealer.
  • quadrunner500quadrunner500 Member Posts: 2,721
On my previous '99 1500, there were a couple of instances where the Service 4WD message came on. First time was after truck had been parked at an odd angle in a ditch. Once or twice it flashed for an instant when I started the engine. I took it in, and there was no stored code, fluid levels were normal. I thought maybe there was an oil level switch in there, but never found out what caused the light. Oops...take it back. 4x4 did quit working once, and it was because the switch was bad. Might have been an intermittent causing the message

Yeah, Gibson....a name you can trust....oops!

Replaced the Gibson with the PV system. Started truck up...little louder with a low burble. Drove the truck out and around the block. All I could think was what a big difference and that Gibson was a true POS. I am 99% satisfied with the PV system and would rate it a 9.99 out of 10. The sound at idle is impressive sounding like a big block and have had many comments from people. I do wish it was a little quieter on the freeway...but is way quieter than the Gibson. Would I buy it again....absolutely. I only wish I had heard of Hamm headers before buying these make believe shorty headers from JBA.

Have you considered buying a Dynomax muffler and adding a venturi? Reason I ask is that it would be as close as you can get to a PV system while not having to pay for the full system. I think you'd be impressed by it. Before John developed his own muffler, he use to sell the Dynomax with the venturi as a complete system. It was last year, I think, that he developed his own muffler. It dyno'd a 6hp increase over the dynomax which is good but may or may not be worth it depending on your situation.

My advice would be at this point, is to try a dynomax muffler as this would be the cheapest route. If not satisfied, buy and add the venturi. The Gibson pipes are mandrel bent so changing those wouldn't give you too much in terms of results.

Ryan, or anyone else for that matter,

Yesterday went to my local lumber yard to pick up a 8' counter top and the 2 muscle bound kids that loaded it, slid the particle board over the tailgate protector, putting a 3" gash in the top of it. (I was searching for a straight piece of 1x4 at the time and was not out of the barn yet) Now this yard is at the end of my street and it is where I do most all of my business, (they can get marine lumber..heh heh). They know this is a new truck and they even know my daughters.

I went to the manager and showed him what happened. Though he indicated that he felt it was minor damage, and didn't feel it warranted any consideration, he told me to see what it would cost to replace it.

Now am I being too anal about this? Had I been at the back of the truck, I would have opened the tailgate and slid the board in flat, but these guys slid it across the tailgate cap and left it angled in the bed with no support in the middle.

What would you do? I ask because you must have an opinion from your time at Menards.

I would be pi$$ed. Of course I am very anal about my truck.

It's unfortunate and I know exactly how you feel. Bought a lawnmower when I had my '92 with a Luxxus cover. Before I had a chance to take the back bar out the "helper" was shoving this huge box accross the lowered tailgate and trying to get under the back bar. Several big scratches across the inside of the tailgate. P____d me off but whatcha gonna do? I gave him a few choice words and let ot go at that.
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
those guys are all dumba$$es and that's why they do what they do including the manager you spoke to.

BTW, I wouldn't have had that problem as my tailgate protector is made of stainless steel. what I do have is an extra tailgate protector from the old days when my truck was stock. You can have it for the shipping cost. If ya want it it's yours as it's only collecting dust. Drop me an email.
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
How's the poron system working for ya? or did you install it yet? hehe
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
    Yea id be pretty mad.

Personally from menards when i loaded anything into a newer (no rust or not falling apart and this was rare) truck i took my time and did it carefully. Im sure this has something to do with me having a new truck and not wanting it to happen.

You lucky the manager said get a price and they will replace it. At menards you would be SOL. There are signs that say we are not responsible for any damage caused. (Unless a forklift hits you or stuff like that you know which has happened)

I was blamed 3 times for causing damage. First guy said i dented his wheel well putting in a pallet of shingles. HMMM he had a 1971 rusted out green ford. The bed was falling off as it was. Guy wanted his shingles free. It was a scam manager told him his truck wasnt worth a pop can. Guy never said a word and left.

Next time we were putting in (me and 2 guys) some lap siding in a van. I was in the middle holding it so it didnt bow. Guy was placing it on the dash. Guy behind gave it a shove and it broke the windshield. Guy in front said i did it. I had witnesses that i did so i was lucky. Thank god for other honest customers.

Third time guy comes in in a brand new ZR2. No bedliner picks up a roll of fencing (duh metal on metal). So hes standing there and we slide it in. Guy goes nuts. THis isnt light stuff. Starts hollaring &#^^#%@*@ later this wk i am going in for a rhino liner you ruined my bed. I chuckled at the guy and said do you know what they do to the bed before they spray it? I said they scrap off the paint. He got in his truck and sped off.

This is a hard call are you being anal? Id say no but its a tailgate protector. I know i have scraped it up many times the first big scrap was the worst i about died. It was about an inch deep gouge in the middle on the corner.

There will be many scratches that occur i now have a bunch and it doesnt bother me anymore.

DOnt know if this helped or not. If hes paying go for it buy a new one

Dented wheel wells?....the tailgate PROTECTOR protected the tailgate as it should have.....aka took the blow!

    What's the problem here folks?

Yeah they should have dropped the gate to load it....but isn't that what the protector is for?...to take the blow?....that's like getting pissed if you get a gouge in the bedliner...it's doing it's job!

Like when they show you your air filter slightly dirty and suggest to replace it....it's catching the dirt!

    LOL

I know we pay a lot for this stuff.....and like it nice....but yes it should have been handled differnt..but I feel if the gate protector gets scratched......it's kinda a war wound!

Good Luck on this one now!!

    - Tim
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
i agree with you. My bedliner has a gouge in it a fence panel was dragged across it and the nail caught. Oh well thats why i have the liner.

I gave the dented wheel well as an example of an incident. The wheel wells were dented prior to me putting in the pallet.
  • gator36gator36 Member Posts: 294
Didn't you say they gouged it?
I can see some scratches and scuffs. That's ok and
one might be a little anal about those.
But a gouge in the protector? That is a little
different. If it has compromised the protector
all of the way through at that spot. Have it replaced..

    Just my $.02

I installed a power tower throttle body spacer that I ordered from Poweraid, and it definitely did not improve my gas mileage noticibly, and it seems like it may have knocked it down a little. My truck is a 2000 Extended Cab 2WD 5.3L 3.42 rear end. The only difference I can tell is that it makes a hissing noise when you accelerate. It's supposed to swirl the the air to mix with the fuel better, but I'm wondering if it helps the Vortecs like it would other engines, as the Vortec intake is supposed to be designed to do that also. It may be restricting the air flow slightly and adversely affecting my gas mileage. Before I installed it I got a best of 22.5 MPG on the Hi-way, since I've installed it the best i've got was about 21, although the 22.5 was a hot summer day reading, and the 21 was in mid-March which was probably about 50 degrees. In my opinion that $70 was a waste of money and time, and I'll probably remove it.

If you're gonna take it out, let me know. I have a lot of stock parts lying around. Maybe we can do a swap. For example, stock head unit, stock shocks, stock air filter, stock mass airflow sensor, stock plugs and wires with 3000 miles on them, stock headlights, stock exhaust manifold. Dang, that sure is a lot of stuff. I would offer the tailgate protector with NO DINGS unfortunately, I've offered that to someone else. My email addy is in my member profile.

Come to think of it, I can't get rid of my stock head unit either cause my Kenwood is in the shop and am using the stock head unit temporarily.
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
    anything left of your truck?
  • kansankansan Member Posts: 115
When I complete everything else I have to get done first and take it off I'll let you know. However, I think I remember you post about your K&N Filter kit, and if you installed the K&N intake tube I don't know if you'll have enough clearance to install the spacer. I couldn't get the K&N intake tube installed with the spacer, and had a hard time getting the original tube back in. I'm building a stockpile of parts too, the original open differential spyder gears, air filter unit, stock chrome steel wheels with almost new Goodyear Wrangler STs. I'll let you know when I remove it.

Ryan - thanks for the info. I never cared much for that burnt orange color. My 2001 was Indigo Blue Metallic. If I get the 2002 as part of the Buy Back, I want to be able to move my cap and running boards over to the new truck. Does anyone know if Indigo Blue is an available color on the 2002's? Why the heck can't I find any info about the 2002's on the internet? Can anyone help?

    Thanks again,

Geez, a scratch on the protector...I used to back my 99 into the same parking stall everyday, and I knew when I was in far enough cause a low lying branch would scrape the top of the protector. Of course, the bed of my truck is also scratched to hell because I refuse to spend a couple of hundred dollars for a protector which I would just destroy.

After all, it is just a truck...

anyone found a decent price for a lock? Would really like to replace the whole handle mechanism for one with a lock (smiliar to the F150)
  • erikheikererikheiker Member Posts: 230
I personally think those spray in liners are a waste. My 2001 already has a bunch of scratches in the bed. To me, it's a truck that gets used for hauling stuff. I consider it normal wear and tear.

Thanks for the feedback. I have tossed around just changing the muffler and use the gibson pipes. John from pv said his would fit the pipes, but I forgot to ask if his muffler has offset input and output like the gibson unit. also his muffler is not quite long enough to fill the gap. so I would have to bridge that somehow. so in the long run it might be cheaper and less hassle to buy the new set up. Also, I live in upstate new york so the stainless pipes would be better in the long run over the aluminized. Are you using the "helix" thorttle body spacer? if you are what do you think of it?
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
No throttle body spacer. Not at this time anyway.
