I am going to replace my stock goodyears with BFG All Terrains. The stocks are P215/75R16, is the following the correct BFG's, P235/70R16?

    Thanks
    JeepSpaz!!

The 215/75R16's and the 235/70R16's are interchangeable. To my knowledge BFG makes nothing in a 215/75R16. That is a oddball size DC came up with. When mine grind down I'll go to the 235's. Hope this answers your question.

I removed the K & N air filter & went back to the stock air filter. The gas mileage with K & N was at best 17 and at worst, around 15 mpg. I just had the oil changed for the first time. I will try the old filter for a while to see if the mileage improves.

Very disappointed with the K & N filter, but may give it another try later on.

I'm sorry you had to learn the hard way. Don't feel TOO bad. I bought a K&N filter and "Recharge Kit" for my M6 before I found out that they were junk. $75 down the drain.

Are you still using your goodforayear's or did you change them? Just wondering about a selection for our winters. I like that "goodforayear"!

Trying to remember if you use K & N air filters or not. If yes, did you disconnect the battery after installation ( both terminals or only one and for how long )

    Thanks in advance-

I PURCHASED A 2003 LIBERTY IN AUGUST, IT HAD 20 MILES ON IT WHEN I DROVE IT OFF THE LOT. 3 MONTHS LATER, I HAVE 11,500, I DO ALOT OF DRIVING.I ALSO HAVE THE MOANING BRAKE PROBLEM, WHICH I HAVE NOT ADDRESSED WITH THE DEALERSHIP AS OF YET. I HAVE ANOTHER MAJOR CONCERN WITH MY NEW RIDE. I LIVE ON 8 MILES OF DIRT ROAD...HALF OF THE COUNTY DIRT IS IN THE VEHICLE WITH ME. THEY HAVE REPLACE THE SEALS, THREADED ROPE THROUGH THE REAR SEAL, BUT TO NO AVAIL. IT LEAKS DIRT AROUND ALL DOORS, WINDOWS AND EVEN BETWEEN THE DOOR PANELS AND WINDOWS. I CANNOT DRESS UP AND DRIVE MY NEW LIBERTY AS I GET FILTHY BEFORE I ARRIVE. I KEEP A BOX OF SWIFTERS IN THE COMPARTMENT TO DUST, SO I CAN SEE HOW FAST I AM GOING, READ THE SETTING OF THE RADIO STATION. I AM AT MY WITS END ON THIS DEAL...ANY HELP????
  • tutonictutonic Member Posts: 12
You need to read the problem page about the brake moan! Here is how it will go. Arrive at dealer explain about moan - they will change you pads for "quieter ones!" Noise may get louder. Take the car back and they may sand the emergency brake. Noise could disappear but more than likely will still be there. At that point you'll be up to speed with the rest of us. Still waiting for the actual fix. As for the dust problem... ask the question on the problem page. Have you addressed the lemon law as it sounds like a manufacture problem. I drove through 3 feet of water in Houston on Monday and the seals held fine.
  • dustbucketdustbucket Member Posts: 4
MY LIBERTY HAS SAT OUT IN A HARD RAIN, NO LEAKS. I HAVE NO HIWAY AIR LEAKS. BUT THE DIRT COMES IN LIKE YOU WOULDNT BELIEVE. THERE IS EVEN DIRT IN THE GLOVE COMPARTMENT. AS FOR THE LEMON LAW, I AM SURE IT IS COMING TO THAT POINT. THE DEALERSHIP GAVE ME A LOANER WHILE THEY HAD MINE FOR 3 DAYS. IT HAD A HELLA DIRT PROBLEM TOO. I LOVE THE DRIVE AND RIDE OF THE LIBERTY. BUT THIS DIRT PROBLEM HAS TO COME TO AN END ONE WAY OR THE OTHER. THATS WHY I HAVENT HAD THE BRAKES CHECKED DUE TO THE FACT THAT THE DIRT IS A #1 ISSUE RIGHT NOW. BUT WHEN THE GUY FROM DETROIT GETS HERE ON THE 4TH I AM GOING TO SAY SOMETHING ABOUT THAT WHEN I TAKE IT IN. I DRIVE 140 MILES A DAY ROUND TRIP TO WORK. THE COUNTY I LIVE IN CANT AFFORD TO LOOSE TOO MUCH MORE DIRT TO THE INSIDE OF MY VEHICLE!!!!

First, stop posting in ALL CAPS.

Second, find a new place to live.

i am so very sorry if i offended you by the caps. i would assume that your one of those that believe the "yelling" aspect of the net. secondly, i am thinking that it would probably be a little cheaper to rid myself of the liberty than to sell a quarter section of land and the cattle. ty so much elmoblatch for your input, i thought maybe someone might have a logical solution to this problem. i am sure your monitoring is appreciated by the rest of the ppl trying to solve problems here.

You do have the windows closed? Just kidding.
What about positive pressure - push the dirt from inside out.
Well no usefull answers about the dirt but if you ever find out why keep us informed.
  • elmoblatch1elmoblatch1 Member Posts: 134
The point that I was trying to make is that the dust is part of the environment. Not sure how you are going to avoid it getting into all parts of the jeep. I know that is not the answer you were looking for, but I don't know what else to tell you.

I hope someone here is able to help.

There is a poster named renegaded that seems to know alot about jeeps, he posts on the K & N air filter board, which is under the Fuel main category. I think he has posted here in the past.

You WILL learn something if you hang for awhile.

I think you just summed up nicely what message boards are all about! :-)

Have you tried cleaning the truck before you drive through the dirt, and then used the air-recirculation position of the ventilation system (bottom left on the knob)? Perhaps this could help you isolate the air vents as the possible source of penetration.
  • elmoblatch1elmoblatch1 Member Posts: 134
I have not given up on the K & N air filter yet.

I did not pull the battery cable to re-set the engine computer when I first installed the K & N filter. I have just re-installed the K & N filter and pulled the cable this time. I will post back with mpg readings.

Does anyone have an issues with the seat belts not retracting?

They just seem to hang there after use.

I just wanted to post my positive response to owning a 2003 Liberty Sport and add my two cents for what it's worth! I purchased my Jeep on April Fool's Day (was I insane or what???) but have not had a shimmy, shake, noise (other than the helicopter effect, which my Chrysler Cirrus did, and it IS mentioned in the manual that comes with the car!) and I just LOVE it! It turns on a dime, has a comfortable ride and my 2 kids love it as well! Two kids, 2 adults and 2 dogs (each dog 50-55lbs) had a comfortable ride that was over 2 hours long each way. My mileage is about 17 around town, but I've only got 5700 miles on it! The only problem I have is the window controls not being on the door - that's taken some getting used to! I did a lot of door unlocking at first!

I'M THE HAPPY OWNER OF A 2003 LIBERTY. MY NEIGHBOR HAS A 2002 WITH 80K MILES WITH ABSOLUTELY NO PROBLEMS. HE CHANGES THE OIL AND DOES NOTHING ELSE. MPG 17 & 22. I CHECKED AND DROVE LOTS OF VEHICLES : RENDEZVOUS, CRV,ELEMENT,SANTA FE,XTERRA AND THE JEEP LTD WAS THE CLEAR WINNER. I KINDA LIKED THE XTERRA BUT THE PRICE WAS THE SAME AS THE JEEP BUT HANDLING WAS MORE CUMBERSOME. THE JEEP WAS MORE MANEUVERABLE AND LOADED WITH LEATHER, MOONROOF, ABS AND SIDE AIRBAGS. I HAD TO LOOK LONG AND HARD FOR THAT COMBO. YOU WOULD THINK THEY WOULD HAVE ONE OR TWO ON EVERY LOT BUT EVEN ABS IS TOUGH TO FIND. I TRADED IN A 2003 VIBE. NICE CAR BUT NO SOUL AND LOTS OF RATTLES. THE RIDE IS SOLID AND THE HANDLING IS A BLAST.

I wonder if anyone can can address whether an engine block heater for use in cold weather is advisable. I had a 96 Chevy pickup with a factory freeze plug heater and even though it was garaged it was nice to get heat within a few minutes. I guess it helped on engine wear who knows. How about pros and cons on installing one on my Liberty. Freeze plug or in line radiator heater? Though Renegaded claims not to be an expert on Jeeps, I'm sure he must have some opinions on cold weather start strategies. Brrrr!!
  • jayriderjayrider Member Posts: 3,602
Thanks for the info on the heater -- may look into a plug but since my wife and I just retired, I may just stay in my jammies on cold mornings ( sub 30 degrees}. I saw some people were having transmission problems. Mine seems fine at 1500 miles. It's the 45RFE since my car was built in sept 02. I called chrysler and they said it was used in several other vehicles but was changed for supply reasons. I figure DC owns it for seven years so I'm not too concerned.
I've been to Canada quite a few times. As far north as Timmons. Camped at Kettle Lakes -- nice in summer. Based on what we saw on the roads I'm not surprised your garages are unavailable for your cars--they're undoubtedly filled with motorcycles.

I didn't set out to buy one of these limited run jeeps, but after a year of owning it, I've yet to see another on the road. I emailed Jeep for some information, but received what appeared to be a standard form letter reply. How many of you have seen or have one of these patriot badged liberties?

was stickers added by the dealership...to verify, you can check your original window sticker. It won't mention it on the part from the factory, just the addendum from the dealership. It's nice...makes it fairly unique
  • kwagner88kwagner88 Member Posts: 18
No, the Patriot badges were never added by dealers that I know of (my quest to find out more info started after I asked my dealer if it came that way). Jeep informs me that a limited number of them were produced in 02, but they don't have (seemingly) any numbers to give me. As I said before, mine is the only one I've ever seen and the only one anyone I know has seen. I'm just wondering if any of you fine folks have seen or have one. I get quite a few turned heads during my hour drive to work every day and I've been questioned about it. If you live in southern York county, PA, you may have seen me. I should note that I've seen an old photo of a jeep jamboree with the first liberties and one of them had a custom paint job that very closely resembled the patriot edition. I suspect that the decals were modeled from that jeep.

Jeep.com used to have a page devoted to the Patriot package. The package was a set of flag graphics for the Lib, GC, and TJ. The site specifically stated that a Jeep dealer could apply the package to pre-2002 models. I know this because I was looking for a used TJ to use as a parade vehicle. I ended up passing on the Patriot package and getting these graphics instead: http://www.magneticflames.com/p.freedomeagle.htm

One website says it won't be out until November. Does anyone know if the new 2005 Renegade will offer the Diesel? I can't wait, I have never understood America's hate of the diesel engine, according to the Jeep Australia website the small Diesel in their version of the Liberty (Cherokee) gets 28MPG and can tow, get this, 7700 lbs!!!!!!

    Exactly what I need.

No snow here in southwest Illinois. O.K. with me. Did you put your Liberty to the test ? What 4wd mode did you use and what tires do you have? I really enjoy my Liberty as well.

I would use my block heater about 30 minutes before leaving the house when I lived in Anchorage (ditto my "Little Buddy"), at least when it would hit 10°F (-12°C) or so. No garage period in 20 years. The tranny seemed to always feel the cold.

Down here in Boise I have the plug duct taped out of the way; keeps it from rattling, but mostly keeps people from asking me why I have a power cord hanging out of my hood :-)

I'm gonna need tow hooks to participate in the jamborees. The local custom shop has a pair of chrome generic hooks from taiwan that can be installed for $80. The installer said he'd never put them on a Liberty and poked his fingers inside the grill openings where they go. After he left ,I wiped his greasy prints off the bumper and left. I'm tempted to set up an appointment but will probably pass.[your word]
The dealer charges $100 for the hooks (front pair} and .8 of an hour to install or about $75. Am I likely to need rear ones as well?

Renegaded.... your message #3682 mentioned a "block heater Cord"- What stores in th US carry this?

Don't depend on the kindness of strangers if you feel your Liberty is about to morph into a hunka hunka burning love.
    1. Keep the fuel tank near empty.
    2. Keep your bladder full
    3. Keep your prostate healthy.

I purchased the accessory subwoofer for my 2004 Jeep Liberty with the intention of installing it myself. The instructions are illustrations only. The first illustration shows removal of the negative battery terminal and a picture of the radio with an exclamation point "!" and the word "CODE". I found nothing in the owners manual concerning an anti-theft feature or what happens to the radio when the battery is dead or replaced.
Anyone out there know if the radio will lock if it is disconnected or power is lost ?

New here, sniffing around because I suddenly need a new vehicle after my Trooper got wrecked last week by a guy who didn't see the red light.

One thing I enjoyed very much with the Trooper was going off road, so my search is limited to only a few models that can realistically do that. My Trooper was great, but I don't think I'll get another one the way Isuzu is going down the drain.

So, if you will indulge me, I have scanned quite a few posts, but I have a few questions:
    1. Is the Liberty unibody or body on frame?
    2. How easy is it to upgrade the tire size?
    3. How about suspension lifts - crank the torsion bars and taller rear springs?
    4. For that matter are the rear springs coil or leaf?)
    5. I am 6'3", 280 pounds...will I fit in this "compact SUV" (according to Edmunds)?.

    Thanks for your time,
    Steve

on the Ford Escape reference. Whatever.
I ordered a couple of books on 4 wheeling. I'm gonna get the tow hooks installed and go to a jamboree. They say that there are alot of beginners so it shouldn't be too intimidating. The closest one is in Missouri and is rated 3-8. There is another in Louisiana that's rated 2-6.
Have you seen the new DC dealership cathedrals?
Most of the ones around here are the old style flat roof boxes but there are a few remodels and new builds with soaring ceilings and 25 foot glass entrances. I don't see that trend with GM or Ford. The behavioral scientists must have convinced DC that it will increase the house edge enough to make the investment worthwhile. Thirty years ago I might have been distracted enough to get skinned a bit. I'm too old to be impressed by that stuff....the sales and finance experience hasn't changed...you still have to be wary.
  • div2div2 Member Posts: 2,580
Congratulations on taking your Lib to a Jamboree. You will be amazed at how well it will do right out of the box. Land Rover and Jeep are the only SUV manufacturers that build serious off-road capability into every vehicle they sell. The new dealership designs indicate that Dodge is attempting to create a consistent "Brand Image". This is a philosophy pioneered by BMW and M-B almost 25 years ago. The dealerships, advertising and products are all subtly linked by design as well as the consistent use of specific graphic layouts and fonts. It also reflects the Germanic respect for heritage; BMW and M-B still sell parts for cars that are over fifty years old, and if they don't stock a part they will help you find someone who can produce it. I'd like to see Jeep adopt a similar strategy; after all, aside from Ford, Jeep is the only domestic manufacturer that promotes it's heritage.

Just purchased a 2004 sport, B package and 5 speed
manual 4x4 3.7. Black. What a deal 18299. For the money couldnt beat it, and i didnt need any/all of the extras. I looked a long time and for the money nothing comes close. Good power with the 5 speed and gas milage at 1000 miles avg 20...60 hwy 40 city driving. The only issue is the stock tires are supposedly dangerous in the wet...and i went in knowing i would replace with Mich CrossTerrains.
I am not a Chrysler fan at all, but i am impressed with this product, and i would rather drive a Liberty than a Grand Cherokee...much better handling in my opinion and a lot cheaper...not to mention a lot better relability...just based on the number of parts the jeep dealerships keep on hand.
So if u are on the fence on what to buy and u dont want to spend big bucks this is the way to go.
  • jayriderjayrider Member Posts: 3,602
You beat the Edmunds best price by over $400. As far as reliability, all us happy Liberty owners owe a debt to Renegaded who appears to have taken on enough evil mojo in his Jeep to keep the rest of us in good stead.

I am looking at getting a used 04 or 04 Grand Cherokee or an 02 Liberty Renegade. Aside from liking the freshened look of the 04 JGC, I really dont know which one would be better. What advise do people have? I have always wanted a Grand, but with the current JGC being outdated next year... kinda makes me feel like I will indeed be getting an already old car with the Grand.
  • stumpf2000stumpf2000 Member Posts: 23
Well, pretty much I am looking for reliability, 'image,' resale, reliability, and price. Everything right? I am actually thinking very strongly about a new Kia Sorento. The image thing is an issue for me, but people who own them seem to love them, it felt GREAT to drive (high interior quality)... suprised the H*% out of me. However, I have always looked at the Jeeps and wanted one. Looks like the Grand will be dated soon and can predict that I would not be too happy about my 'older' jeep at that time.

Will the new 05 liberty not include the current model as a size option... do you pretty much feel that they will be 'dated' soon? Liberty to dodge huh, seems almost sacreligious to do that to a jeep...

Thanks for the imput and more will always be appreciated! THANKS
  • stumpf2000stumpf2000 Member Posts: 23
Where are you seeing this information? Is there solid evidence that this is a real possibility.

Lets see, what do i mean by image....well, your post seems to be case-in-point. You may very well have hard evidence to back up your claims, but if I am like the average population, there is just a negative bias towards them simply because they are a new brand...asian...and at that KOREAN no less... I, however, have very few facts to back up my bias.

I dont want people to look at me and think 'he is some kind of a cheap poser b/c he drives an odd market SUV'. Yes, others' opinions really don't affect me, but it will be something on my mind.

Of the small affordable SUVS out there, I think the Sorento is by far the best looking, followed closely by the Liberty. I like the looks of the escape, but talk about second rate interior...

Looks, image, price, reliability, and (yes I know the negs of kia here)resale. However, I did hear that people are projecting a 25% residual value on a 5 year old Libby. This, the gentelman said, was a prediction based on current depreciation.

My parents own a Liberty Limited and like it. Aside from the gas milage, the really are happy.

    Further comments would be appreciated!

Thanks for your opinion. Although, as an educated person on cars, I am sure that you can know the the sorento is not 'cheap' in a true comparison with other vehicles in its class... :)
BTW, tried to go to thecarconection, but site seems down or gone.
