In my shopping, I have heard the story time and again that starts out, "...they only build them this way, even though it is an option."

What this really means is, each region figures out a few configurations that will probably be popular in their region, then they order those configs in an assortment of colors. The factory also has a say in the matter. The options that are considered "high end" or on luxury competitors are not put on the 4 cyl more "base" models. It is kind of like a class system for the configurations. If you want some high end options on a 2WD 4cyl with cloth interior, you will be doing a 4 month special order. Also, there are some options that "require limited package", so go to a shop@toyota website and configure what you are looking for to see if it is even possible. Good Luck.

Hello to my bay area friends! I just bought a bluestone unlimited V6 2WD highlander from
Tak Lam at Piercey Toyota in San Jose with FE,DR,TO,AG,CQ,HE and CF for 28985.03 out
the door. This is $1000 over invoice plus a fee of $45 (doc), $217 (licence), $5 (tire) and taxes of $2192.03.

I could have bought it $500 less if I was willing to travel to Palm Springs (Toyota of the dessert - Dan Dixon) but Tak was very easy to
work with. I highly recommend him! Hope this info helps. Feel free to email me if you have any questions. -Nick

EJ - 6 disk changer $150/$200
HD - heated seats $352/$440
CF - floor mats approx $150/$170

Dealers managed to convince me that all Limiteds come with LA, HD, and SR, which I did not really want. On the other hand I wanted VD, which per them in reality is not installed on Unlimiteds.

Invoice price... Hmmmm.... Good luck if you can really get it. I bought my HL from Paul Miller Toyota on Rt 59 in Monsey, NY.

Hi. Has anybody bought a HL in Denver/Boulder. Where and what did you pay?

Thanks

Figure most dealers will take $1200 over invoice, sometimes you can work them down from there. Best in the Denver area.

2002 Highlander 29985 MSRP.(including options, which all escape me know) Received OVER $2400 off list. It was the Least expensive of any dealership we visited.(there were 4, all double in size) At each store We priced out exact vehicles. No one came within $450.00 of our price. The vehicle we bought was in stock and picked it up the following Day. All other stores were ordered vehicles....In MASS go to LEXINGTON TOYOTA...Well thats if you want great treatment and pricing..(treatment was actually worth more money)

Hello all! I'm searching for a loaded 4x4 Limited and want to pay $1000 or less over invoice, but it seems to be quite tough here in Reno, NV. A couple of dealers in No. California have come down to $1450 over invoice, but most demand MSRP. So, are there any dealers out there on the west coast that would do a deal like that?

One other thing, some people on here THINK that they got $800 over invoice, but tacked on the destination charge afterwards. From what I see, the destination charge is supposed to be built into the invoice cost. So, in all reality, I believe you paid $800+destination charge over invoice. I could be wrong, but according to Edmunds, it is included.
• raybearraybear Member Posts: 1,795
I've seen them go for less than $1000 over in Southern California, destination included.
• lbags48lbags48 Member Posts: 17
wkremer,

We special ordered a V6 4X2 non-limited about 2 months ago. We paid $1000.00 over cost. The dealer's cost equaled base price+desitination+TDA. I think most dealers here in No. Cal calculate their cost/invoice this way.

Appears dealers are starting to get a lot more HL on their lots. I'm sure if you don't mind driving down to the immediate Bay Area, you'd be able to find a deal for at or under $1000.

I'm the proud owner of two Highlanders.

First is a 2001 purchased 6/2001 for $600 over invoice.

Second is a 2002 purchase 3/2002 for $700 over invoice.

Both were purchase here in the Phoenix metro area.

I hope this is helpful.

Good luck, Philip

Hello everyone. I'm planning to buy a 2002 HL V6 AWD Limited, and looked at CarsDirect.com

I'm looking to buy in New Hampshire (no sales tax) as thats where I'm moving or here in California before moving.

They quote: NH(no tax) $31030 (invoice is 28530)
S. Cal $29494 (invoice 28294)

This sounds pretty good...what do you all think?

Just bought a 2002 Bluestone HL Limited with 6 disc changer, Leather, sunroof, Tow prep, Electrochromic mirror, and Toyoguard. List was 33,119. I paid 30,077. $200 over invoice. It helps to have multiple dealers in the area! I'm very happy with my deal, although I hate paying the 600 for toyoguard which seems like a waste. I couldn't find any HL's without it.

Can't believe that a $30,000 car doesn't come with floormats though! I'll just use my old all weather mats from my previous car.

FE, SR, BE,TO, UQ,VD,LL,EJ,LA,HD,CF

Picked up following on 3/30/02; 4x2 Ltd. with EJAT (premium radio/cd chngr) LAAT (leather int.)PV50 (floor/cargo mats) SRAT(sunroof) TOAT (towing prep) VDAT (vehicle skid control+traction control)XY30 (Toyogard)@ $29709.60. This INCLUDES dealer(or Admin fee) of $499.50. Taxes(6%=$1782.91), State fees($6.50) and NEW plates/registration($202) added $1991.41. OUT THE DOOR = $31700.01. MSRP was $33,755.15 + taxes, fees, plates. Not too bad a deal. All Central Fla. dealers are adding a fee of $499.50 to cover overhead, blah, blah, blah. Don't get fooled by that, just consider it part of the negotiable price. Got the Toyogard for $75.00!! and the mats for$100.00. Just goes to show you how much they really pay for this stuff. I negotiated via e-mail and (their)phone calls to me for approx. 2 weeks. We agreed on a price without Toyogard and mats prior to the vehicle being in their inventory at $31525 out the door. Do the math. I knew which cars were available at the Jacksonville, Fl.dock/prep center by going to billpenneytoyota.com and searching his inventory (you will see a link at his inventory page that will give you a rundown of vehicles that are currently being prepped for dealer delivery for the southeast U.S. dealer network. This is where the regional distrib. puts on all those costly extras (options/accessories that end in a numeric code; eg. XY30= toyogard). If the procedure has not been done you may be able to avoid the stuff you didn't want anyway by letting your dealer know which VIN your interested in. The mats are just OK. Nothing special and certainly not even worth the $100 I spent (my wife said yes to these!). The Toyogard at $75, I believe is worth that much due to the undercoat and the VIN etched glass. You can usually save a little on you insurance by letting them know that this procedure had been done. By the way, if you look at Dealer fee mark-up on this vehicle in Alabama it's only $250. I firmly believe that waiting until the 2nd to the last day of the month to buy helped me get the price I got. Quotas/commissions are usually reviewed/paid at the 1st of the month for prior month. I don't have all the business facts on Toyota dealer invoicing and holdback but I'm pretty certain that the Toyota deaers receive at least 2% of base MSRP (per EDMUNDS) and its a sliding scale based on how long the vehice sits in their inventory to the date of the signed sales transaction. In other words the quicker they turn the car over the more of the holdback (add'l profit) they keep. Guess why they don't inventory Highlanders, especially when they are as hot a commodity as they are. Good hunting and negotiating. P.S. I refused to give them the 1 penney of the $31700.01. They took it.

$33,104 for a V6 AWD Bluestone Limited. Moonroof, leather, tow package, VSC, limited package, 6disc, heated seats, mats. Invoice on this was 31,904, so $1200 over. Tax of $1049, processing fee of $122. Trade-in of $7500 so I was out the door at $26775.77.

Bought through Automotive Avenues in Lakewood, and would recommend. They found what I wanted at a dealer in Ft. Collins and it was here in 2 days. An easy 20 minutes with the trade in and paperwork (though the finance guys repeated expressions of shock--"Really....wow.....REALLY?....oh, man"--when I wouldn't buy the-etch-a-number-on-your-window-to- prevent-theft-thingee nearly made me laugh out loud).

Then I bought a 10 year/100K mile extended warranty through 1source. No deductible for $960. The peace of mind is worth it to me and that seemed like a damn cheap price. Can't believe I wouldn't spend at least a grand in repairs over the next 10yrs/100k miles, but then I've never had a Toyota before so hopefully I'm wrong.

For a 4x2 4cyl. HL with msrp of 26,111 I was quoted 23,888. That's 750 over invoice. This was Longo Toyota in El Monte. Unfortunately, I'm upside down on my Avalon, and will have to wait to purchase.
• octothorpeoctothorpe Member Posts: 11
I bought my highlander at AutoFair Toyota in Manchester, NH. You can visit their website at www.autofair.com, fill out a spec sheet, and they will email you an over-invoice price (eg. $500 over).

I worked with the Internet sales rep Joe Webb, who was awesome. He can also be reached at (603) 634-0674. You can tell him that you spoke with me, James Foster, now the owner of a Silver Highlander. :)

I also live here in Savannah and have had some unfortunate experiences at Savannah Toyota while searching for my Highlander. Your deal seems to be a very good one, so please share where you bought?

Question for anyone:
Much of my bad experience has been the salesperson at Savannah Toyota (I always get stuck speaking with him) blatantly lies about options, etc. and when I go to the Toyota website, it appears to conflict with the Toyota literature. Let me explain...
We want a 2002 HL V6 Limited with leather, keyless remote, roofrack, climate control, side air bags. When I told the salesperson, he told me that many of these things come in separate packages (lie) and that my price would be approx. $34K. Toyota's literature states that the keyless remote, roofrack, climate control are standard on the Limited. I can buy the optional side airbags and leather separate. However, when I try to 'build my own' on the Toyota webiste, the Toyota website adds $200 for the premium 3 in 1 sound system (not the 6 disc CD changer), which I thought was standard on the Limited, and according to the literature I got at the dealer, it is standard. It also adds $160 for the towing package, which I don't want. I also have seen two different prices for leather - one is called the leather package for $1070 and one is called the Highlander leather package for $1429 - what's the difference? The website also says that you have to pay $498 for the woodgrain dash&accent, which I thought was standard on the Limited...

Bottom line, we're ready to buy a Highlander because we love the car and we love Toyota's reputation for building solid vehicles. However, I'm not going to pay for things that I don't want or understand and Toyota's pricing schemes are very difficult to decipher (i.e. all the packages)...

I think I get what I want for approx. $30K and am prepared to do so, but I need help figuring out all this stuff, which the dealership seems unwilling to do. Any help from the group would be greatly appreciated.
• cmunizcmuniz Member Posts: 604
Try using the Edmunds new car pricing module. Start with the Limited and add what you want from the list. The premium radio and the "wood" dash are standard. The 6 CD changer is about $200-250. Edmunds should give you am accurate range of prices, but it will probably by higher than $30K. There are two types of leather - factory and port installed, but not sure which is which. I think Toyota brings in most of the Highlander from Japan with the towing package so that may be hard to delete from your list of desirable options. My understanding is that the Highlander come from Japan with the options listed on the left hand side of the sticker. The dealer orders the options listed on the right hand side to be installed at the port, at least that's the way it appears to work in the Southeast region. My dealer gave me a list of Highlanders that he had on order and told me that up to two weeks before scheduled delivery I could add what ever options I wanted installed by the port to any Highlander on the list. That way I could get one built similar, but not exactly, like I wanted without having to wait for a factory order.

Rick..go to Chatham Parkway..ask for Freddie Lucas Jr...tell him Jon sent you..the Highlander you want should be around $29,500 or so..for a Limted, Leather, side airbags, carpet mats, 6 CD changer (almost all Limiteds come with this), towing package (again, all Limiteds come with this)..heres the story on the leather..if it comes from Japan..and only the Ivory does..the cost $1070..if it is port installed you can get either the Ivory or the Charcoal $1450..all of these are the perforated leather with the little holes in it..we love the leather..best of luck and let me know how else I can help you..believe me..I have done my homework and Freddie knows I have..

Just bought (3/02) a super white 2wd/V6 (non-limited) HL. Optional equip: convenience pkg (CQ)keyless entry, tonneau cover, roof rack sys., 8-way power seat, privacy glass, tow prep & converter. Installed options: PDS Show Car (FP8), color-keyed fender flares, Steller by Enkei alloy wheels (WR3), Toyo guard protection group (XY3): exterior paint sealant, toyo guard sealant cleaner, interior fabric protector, undercoating/sound shield, glass etch. HL travel pkg (ZH1): cargo liner, rear spoiler, drop hitch receiver/wiring harness, carpeted maps & trunk mat.

Sticker $29,956.15
Trade in: $2000.00
Bottom line: We dickered; they threw in a Toyota bug deflector so I wrote them a check for $26,599 and drove it home the same day.

I have since added McNeil WeatherFlectors and tail light "covers" to give her a bit more of a rugged look. (and a fourth brake light in the Reese hitch). Creeping up on 600 miles already and I've already towed my boat to the lake and back, and what a beautiful ride it was. I'd like to say one thing: I LOVE THIS VEHICLE!
• llofgrenllofgren Member Posts: 129
I am trying to decide on a hitch...the Reese like you have or the Hidden Hitch. How do you like the Reese? Was it factory installed? Is it tucked up under the bumper? I would appreciate any info......thanks!
• pdalpsherpdalpsher Member Posts: 136
My neighbor's boyfriend has a hidden hitch and it is under the bumper. Only the pigtail connector is really visible and that is because it is multi-colors against the black hitch. He removes the ball and has a reflector in the receptical. You can see it is there but it isn't intrusive. Doesn't make his HL look bad in any way. His HL is silver.
• llofgrenllofgren Member Posts: 129
Thanks for the info on the Hidden Hitch. Thats what I am probably going to get. It seems like it looks OK, is easy to install and isn't too expensive. I have the silver too.
• rickingarickinga Member Posts: 4
John, thanks for the info. I'll be calling Freddie very soon. I've got my car for sale and should sell it in the next week or so...when I do, I'm headed to Chatham Parkway Toyota.

I've also heard good things about Franklin Toyota in Statesboro...did you speak with them?

p.s. Since you know what I'm looking for, how long do you think I'll have to wait to receive delivery? (Given they don't have a black V6 Limited, side air bags, leather, 6 CD changer on the lot)
• jonr5jonr5 Member Posts: 5
Yeah..I spoke with almost everyone around the Savannah area..I got quotes from Brunswick, Macon, and Franklin in Statesboro..I wanted to buy local if I could and had worked with Freddie before..now he like any salesman will give you his salesmanship..but all in all..Chatham Parkway has been a good dealership to work with..the price they are willing to give to you just depends on how things are selling..but I still think you should be able to get what you want for around $29,000 - $29,500..took about a month for ours to come in..they can look up and see what other dealers have and whats coming over on the boats..just depends..best of luck..let me know what Freddie says..remember Rick..tell him Jon sent you..

Greetings:

It took a lot of e-mailing (cc'd dealers on Toyota website from Cincinnati to Atlanta) and calling around, but I found some dealers within driving distance willing to sell for 1000 over invoice. One had no doc fee, others had mild doc fees (<$170). Out of a fluke, one of them had the HL I wanted with only a few options I didn't want had I custom-ordered. The 1000 over did not include the "Toyota Advertising Fee" which all of the dealers I checked included. Bottom line was I added up the exact prices of options from here or kbb.com added $169 doc, $1000 over invoice, $394 advertising (which is part of thier invoice printout FWIW) and that's what I paid.

Got a Bluestone V6 AWD. Only extras I got that I didn't really want were: Luggage rack (haven't seen one without except a picture in Toyota flier), Alarm System, Power Seat - again, haven't seen one without around here, and mats.

I'm in the Middle TN area, went slighty north into KY for the car. Good luck!

Currently own a 2000 Sienna XLE and going to trade or sale. I am looking at buying a 6 cyl 2wd highlander in the next few weeks. Hoping to get either the base loaded or the limited with just leather for under 28,500. Here's my configurations:(invoice)
BASE @ 22658
Dest Chg 510
AG 728
CQ 256
PE 312
8E 235
RL 32
DR 176
RF 200
Plus "Port installed" leather (cost ?)

OR the Limited 2wd for BASE @ 26159 + 510 dest. chg + Leather 856 for 27525

Other than the limited adding climate control, heated mirrors, fog lamps why should I add the extra money to get the limited? Can I even get the Limited with leather for under 28500 + ttl?

Any input would be much much appreciated!

From what I have seen..your probably going to find alot more non-limiteds loaded than just a limited with just leather..most limiteds come with at least tow pack..6 cd changer..added to them..so theres another $350 you can count on..I'm also in Ga and bought mine here in Savannah for about $800 over invoice..told the salesman what I wanted..and he found it coming over on the boat..

Hello,

I apologize for the long post, but a future HL owner is asking for you help and opinions. Currently I am looking to replace my 150K miles Corolla with V6 HL AWD within the next 3 months. Using Priceline, I configured HL as follows:

VIP RS 3200 PLUS ALARM SYSTEM (V5)
CONVENIENCE PKG (CQ) (incl keyless entry and cargo tonneau cover)
HOOD PROTECTOR (HP)
5-PIECE CARPETED FLOOR MAT SET (CF)
CARGO NET (GN)
ALL-WEATHER FLOOR MATS (2Q)
AUTO-DIMMING REARVIEW MIRROR (N1)
ALLOY WHEEL LOCKS (WL)
REAR SPOILER (RF)
APPEARANCE PKG (AG) (incl (5) ALUMINUM WHEELS (AW) COLOR-KEYED MUDGUARDS (MG), PRIVACY GLASS (PG))
ROOF RACK SYSTEM (DR)
VEHICLE SKID CONTROL (VD)
ALARM SYSTEM PRE-WIRING (UZ)
SIDE-IMPACT AIRBAGS (BE)
HEATED PWR MIRRORS (EH)
TOWING PREP PKG (TO)

Total before TDA and destination is $25,590 invoice and $29,364 MSRP.

Now I need to run this configuration through the reality check. Toyota web site doesn't offer any help, since both "popular" combinations are virtually identical (except for DRL) and include Preferred (by whom???) Package, which I do not need.

Would you please, help me with the following:

1. How real is it to get the HL in the above configuration?

2. What options from the above list can be easily purchased after market? This will give me at least some flexibility in my search. Maybe some aftermarket items are of better quality than Toyota ones. Floor mats come to mind.

3. What additional options will I most likely be forced to buy because of the way HLs are built?

4. Does the security system include the glass breakage sensor, remote startup, and trunk opener? If not, how can I add them? Maybe it makes sense not to buy V5 all together and get an aftermarket alarm with all those features?

5. I will make an OTD offer probably like invoice + $5-700 + TDA + TTL. Will I get thrown out of the dealership in NY tri-state area? How much is TDA? Priceline lists it at approximately $400.

6. I live in Northern New Jersey, but will travel reasonably. Do you have any information on which dealerships I should or should NOT visit? There are about 50 dealerships in 50 miles radius from my home. Hopefully I’ll be able to find one that will meet my price.

Thank you so much for your help. If you believe that the response will clutter the topic, please, reply to e-mail below.

I'll be down to some of dealerships around Western Tennessee in couple of days to buy for a 2WD V6 Highlander (Non-Limited). What would be the reasonable price for a 2WD V6 Highlander with,
Convience Package
Preferred Package
Sunroof
Roof Rack
Aluminum Wheels
Privacy Glasses
Tow Prep
+ some minor options (i.e. Wood Grain Dash, etc)

So far two major dealerships near my town gave me quote around 27000-27500 plus tax, and others.
Is this reasonable price? I read some of previous post and found out some of people got a Highlander $3000 under MSRP.
The model I'm interested(with the options listed above) in to buy listed around 29200-29600 for its MSRP. I say 27000 is reasonable but what do you think?

It's odd that I ask a question then post what I have paid right after, anyway, this is how much I paid for 2WD V6 Silver Highlander.

It came with those usual configuration.

AW Aluminum Wheels
CQ Conviniece Package
SR Power Sunroof w/Tilt and Sunshade
HE Preferred Package
PG Privacy Glass
DR Roof Rack System
TO Towing Prep. Package
+ Floor Carpet
+ Simulated Molded Burlwood Dash Applique

Last Two Items that I don't know the code.

Anyway, I got this for $27125 + Doc. fee + tax,
MSRP was $29603 for this, so about $2500 off.
I couldn't get $3000 off, but still, this is around what Edmunds.com proposed on its TMV, and under Carsdirect.com price.
I bought this at Robinson Toyota of Jackson, TN

I believe I got pretty good deal on this, so what do you think?

Big thanks to raprider for his post in re Carson Toyota. I called/emailed them on Saturday about the Internet special they were running. All 4WD (non-limited) Highlanders in stock are selling for $99 over invoice.

Yesterday, we picked up our new Highlander. Configuration as follows:
Black/Ivory V6 AWD
DR, SR, TO, UQ, AG, CQ, HE, CF
Total, including destination price and advertising fee, was $27673.

I got a fantastic deal, and the Fleet Sales department at Carson Toyota was terrific. No pressure to add anything on, the vehicle was prepped and waiting for us when we arrived on Sunday morning. I highly recommend Dianne and Tony. They were a breeze to deal with.

If anyone out there in Southern California is on the fence right now, this is a sweet deal. They still have a couple AWD Highlanders left, and the price was still posted on their website this morning (4/22). Dianne told me she probably wouldn't be running this deal past Sunday (4/21), so give them a call if you want to get in on this deal...

Here's my situation:

I am trying to get a 2WD limited V6 with leather. Here is the invoice breakdown

BASE 26,159
Destination 510
additional freight
charges, Southeast 25
Administration charge
Southeast Toyota 565

LA-Leather 856
-----
Total invoice 28,115

I have talked to someone from Autobytel who located a car that he can get with just leather, but he quoted 28,400 (Different from above figures - WHY?) for the invoice price and said he could sell it for 28,900. Given that we are willing to wait and factory order, is it unreasonable to think that we could bet the above car for invoice or 1% over given the holdback. Is the southeast toyo administrative charge of 565.00 legit or negotiable? Anyone else in GA with a breakdown of their purchase and suggested dealers please email Richellel@alltel.net
