Is the toyota financing a good deal or is it some trick. We went and looked at a toyota last saturday the sales guy said that it was the last day you could get .9% financing. We still decided to wait. He calls me up today(weds) and says they still have the .9% financing, are these guys trustworthy at all. I have found them in a ton of lies now.
Are you sure that the .9% rate is available on an HL? I've seen that rate advertised in our area (South Jersey), but it is only available on certain models (like the Corolla). I would be extremely surprised if you could get that on an HL which are selling briskly. If you can, by all means grab it!
Edsam, you got a good deal on your Base V6 WAD! I am planning to buy the same. Would you please tell me the name and address of the Toyota dealer from which you bought your Highlander? Any other information you can provide to help me would be much appreciated. Thanks.
Yeah they told me either one. I just don't believe them. These are like not advertised at all, its like they create this stuff when your in the dealership. I was about to pay cash for my HL or Sienna, and I was complaining about their cost for the cars being 1k over what I wanted to pay, they told me get the .9% and you can bank the cash and make that 1k back. These tactics confuse me a lot.
Tell them that you would purchase the vehicle TODAY if they could get you .9% financing at the price YOU wanted to pay or you are going to walk out. That seems to motivate them a lot. I have to admit, however, .9% financing seems too good to be true even for 3 year financing. I would look at the paper work very carefully if I were you.
Has anyone used any of those Internet automobile referrel sites like autobytel or MSN Carpoint to get quotes from dealers? What I really want is a service where I specify the exact auto options and the price I'm willing to pay rather than a dealer giving me is best price. I want to specify exactly the options I need and then specify that I'm only going to pay INVOICE price. Since the dealer get's a 2% holdback on MSRP, this is plenty of profit for very little service. Also, I'm in no hurry so I can wait 6 months (or even longer) if needed. But, I would like to send my request to an on-line service that will forward me request to many dealers.
I just picked up the car on Jul 3. It is a base V6 in vintage gold. Lexus engineering and refinement at Toyota's price. The car is a beauty.
After wasting time at various east end dealers, I decided to email offers to all Toyota dealers listed in autonet.ca. There are 34 in total within the Toronto area. In the first round, I sent out 6 offers ($40650 OTR). Two dealers responded but Dave Nicholls Toyota (Keele and Lawrence) came through first. 2 emails later, we have worked out the price. The sales manager (Doug) was terrific to deal with. He even had a surprise present for us when we picked up the Highlander. A class act all the way.
After the first round of email offers, I decided to send out a second offer of $39800 OTR (475 freight instead of 1245). I did this to ensure I was getting the rock bottom price. The second email offer was sent to another six dealers. Needless to say, none responded.
Don't waste your time with Autobytel. There is only one Autobytel authorized Toyota dealer in Ontario. That dealer only took $1000 off MSRP. In case you haven't got the invoice price yet, it is $32655. Good luck!
I would like to get some information on what people are getting for lease deals in the Northeast? Specifically what price you are buying the car for, and what the lease rate factor or APR is? We are looking at a V6 4x4 with AG, CQ, HE, SR, GN, CF, DR, RF, which invoice is approximately $26,700, retail $30,700. We went to Bernardi Toyota last night, and they were trying to lease it at MSRP, with a lease APR of 7.68% or lease factor of 0.0032. Nissan is offering a lease factor of 0.0013 which is 3.12%, on a Pathfinder SE, which makes a huge difference. Any information and dealers where people had success would be appreciated! Thanks!
I shopped the length and breadth of both states. I eventually bought from Colonial Toyota in Pawtucket. Couldn't get the color I wanted but the deal was reasonable
I'm about to buy a Highlander & have a couple of questions.
I ordered the Consumer Reports price guide for the Highlander and it lists under Dealer Holdbacks. I was under the impression that Toyota has a holdback of 2% of MSRP. Is the Consumer Reports thing wrong? Can anyone comment?
Also, I'm in the San Diego area & was wondering if anyone can recommend your salesperson. amsunshine and tdat mentioned San Diego area dealerships. Any tips? Thanks!
That sounds like b.s. to me, you need to call consumer reports and find out what the deal is, they charge you 12 bucks for that nonsense. Only thing that makes sense to me is maybe the manufactor doesn't want to give hold back on the HL till it's been out longer, but I doubt that.
Let us know what get for a reply. hehe by the way I'm too cheap to buy that report can you post what you got. for the base 4 or base 6 2wd, no options. just the minumim invoice. Also any fees they think we are required to pay for. Would like to know what they think we should pay for the toyoguard nonsense, or any dealer fees.
dansh, I bought mine from Kearny Mesa Toyota after trying to deal with Poway Toyota over email. I paid $1000 over invoice, which included TDA. I've been losing sleep over the possibility that I could have shaved $1000 by haggling over TDA, extra options I didn't need, etc but overall I'm pretty satisfied. The part of the deal was that I get financing thru them. I paid it off in a few days with PeopleFirst.com at a lower rate.
For some reason, Kearny Mesa Toyota is totally obsessed with "completely satisfying" me. They called me TWICE after they changed the engine oil, making sure I was completely satisfied, begging me to give them completely satisfactory rating on Toyota survey, which I never received.
I dealt with a sales guy name Ernie Jamie. I think he is a fleet manager.
tdat - Thanks for the info. I wouldn't mind being "completely satisfied." ;-) Seriously, sounds like these cars are moving pretty fast, so I think you probably did pretty well at $1000 over invoice.
I think gunga64 is right about the CR price report being b.s. I called them this morning. They said they'd contact the person who made the report & get back to me. I never got a call, so I'll call again tomorrow (to request a refund).
The CR report is pretty much worthless. Has all of the same info. that one can find on edmunds.com and other sites & nothing more. No info on toyoguard or dealer fees, other than the usual warning about dealer add-ons & a "one line fits all" about advertising fees ($200-400, may or may not be negotiable).
I thought it would be worth the $12 to walk into a dealership with a nice, official-looking piece of paper w/ all invoice/MSRP pricing on it. But, the dealer holdback screw-up trashes that idea. Yet, considering the money I'm going to pay for a car, it was worth the $12 to see if it was worthwile. Maybe I'll get the refund...(not holding my breath)
Anyway, for the base invoice prices on 2WD Highlanders, it shows (not inc. destination charge): 4-cyl : $20,928 6-cyl : $21,408
When totalling up the MSRP prices for base + options in the CR report, I got the exact same price I saw on stickers at the dealer. Thus, I'm guessing that the invoice prices are correct.
I didn't think cr would give much more info then we could get online. Kinda pisses you off they charge 12 bucks for that, non profit yeah right. Toyota it seems is a lot tougher to get all the invoice fees then any other dealer I guess. They sure like to throw in fees at Toyota. Don't you wish you could buy an Hl near those base prices. Wouldn't that be great. I'm afraid with all the options they add I can't get an HL. It's over my budget.
My salesman told me that if I did get called for the Toyota buyer's survey (which I did), he would get points only if I answered "completely satisfied" to a question. If I chose to say I was only "satisfied" he would get a zero. Seems like a dumb way to score it to me (Toyota, are you listening?) but yeah, they're obsessed with the "completely" part, 'cause they want good scores.
gwkiser, there was a question asking whether or not the salesman called me to check in AFTER delivery, so it sounds like Toyota wants salespeople to do that. Mine did.
On negotiating: I found that knowing not just the invoice price was useful, but also what kind of deals people have been getting. Plus the blue book price on my trade-in. Beyond that, I just told myself not to believe anything the salesman said, at least at the beginning. Even though he said his goal was to make sure I could give him those "completely you-know-what" ratings on the survey, a salesman is your friend only until you start talking price, then of necessity, it becomes an adversarial relationship. His first offer was near MSRP for the HL and REALLY low for my trade-in. He claimed that even fleet buyers aren't getting much better. I could say that I knew from Edmunds that someone in my area got a particular deal. Then I sat there and read the newspaper while he went away for awhile. Stay calm, don't let them wear you down. And if you think you need a better price, do begin to walk out, or at least make a face and start to talk about needing to go home and think it over.
Finally got a hold of the person at CR regarding the report (again). She never got an answer back from the report folks & they weren't in the office today. She was quick to agree to a refund after I mentioned it & said she'd still try to follow up. We'll see. At least I got my $12 bucks back. Hope this experience saves others a few bucks.
I think I may go to an email strategy & email all SD area dealers w/ an offer. I'll report back.
I had an excellent experience w/ the "email strategy." I emailed 10 San Diego area dealers w/ a formula similar to that suggested by edsam in message #148. I got 5 responses back which ranged from $100 to $550 more than my low-ball offer (on identical vehicles). I just went with the lowest offer & am now driving a brand new Silver 2-cyl Highlander (thankfully without the stupid-looking rear spoiler). Minimum of haggling & very quick -- 36 hours from when I sent the first email to when I drove away with the HL. The easiest car-buying experience I've had.
The Toyota Highlander has either a in-line 4-cyl. or a V-6. Is what you are saying in your post that your Highlander is 2 wheel drive? Or did you buy (tongue planted firmly in cheek here) a Highlander that someone put a Harley Davidson motor into... :-)
I have been looking for a "bare" Highlander with just V6, AWD, roof rack, mud guards and floor mats. Of course, Toyota does not ship them to the U.S. like that. So I did a factory order....checked around the country (willing to fly to pick it up). Ended up that a dealer in my own state gave me the best deal. Invoice (by Edmunds, and Kelly Blue Book)plus "advertising fee" (which I hate!) of $250 plus $500. Total, then came to $25,152, with any 2002 increase capped at 2% max (and less, if it is less). Does not include TTL (tax, title, lisence). Bad news is 4 to 6 month wait (god, I could be dead by then!)....
What is paint protection dealers sell that is buffed on like wax. They say it is good for 5 years. Has anyone gotten it. and how much did it cost? Is it a rip-off? Can I get it cheaper elsewhere? will it harm the paint?
I just bought a fully loaded Highlander from a Northern NJ dealer that included the following:
Limited Package (sunroof, app pckg, etc.) Leather Seats Tow Prep Air Bags 6-CD player Skid Control Cargo Net/FLoor Mats
Including destination, I paid $32,900 for this (tax and DMV fee were extra). After sitting with the dealer for 3 hours, this is the best I could do. It is lower than the edmunds TMV price and the quote I got from carsdirect.com, but still is $2500 over invoice. According to another message on this board, a dealer in Lynbrook, NY is selling the same vehicle for only $950 over invoice (obviously, I did not see that until after I bought the car).
I have been on lookout to buy a fully loaded HL v6 4WD. I am just posting the prices here for reference. This is what I have found. Northen Jersey the offer i recvd are in the range of 32 - 32.5. In souther jersey I got prices near 31.8 - 32.
I also got offers from some delaers in VA where they give the HL for $600 above invoice. Cliffy can correct me iF I am wrong.
marcasoo, the factory only offers the tan leather. Like many others, I chose the gray, which in my area is installed at the distributor level (Gulf States Toyota, TX, OKLA, LA). If you want gray leather in so cal, it is my understanding that the dealer will have to sub contract the job out to an independent leather shop to do the work. Others might have more insight for you......
I am very happy to say that I have finally purchased a highlander. I live in Houston and have been researching this particular vehicle for some time now. This message board was very helpful to my endeavor. Well I bought a silver 4x2 highlander with LL, L2, SR, VD, EJ, SB, BE, M5, WL, AND CN.
I had to special order this vehicle because no dealership had exactly what I wanted. It took only 18 days for my vehicle to arrive at the dealership. I am very happy with it and would recommend the highlander to anybody. Thanks again for all the great tips.
Congratulations on your new HL purchase. Hope you're as happy with it as the rest of us have been with ours. BTW, what are the options L2 and CN? I figured out the rest but can't remember what those are....
Can you give me the name of the dealership in Houston and the name of the salesperson. I too live in Houston and am looking for a similiar vehicle. Thanks for the help. AJ
I'm looking for a V6 4WD Limited Highlander. So far the dealers that called me following my cars.com inquiry gave me quotes at MSRP or just below it. Can anyone recommend how to go about getting the best deal in the San Jose area (particular dealer, etc.)?
Just shop around. I've heard of great deals up in fremont, and palo alto area. I got screwed by the dealer at Capitol Toyota so don't go there. They flat out lied to me about what I was getting with a lease. I leased mine at msrp, 4wd v6 limited no leather. They lied about my money factor, licensing, and a couple other points. They avoided me for as long as they could, then just stopped returning my calls. They weren't willing to resolve it at all. I believe that someone recently purchased a highlander up in palo alto for $1000-$2000 off msrp. There's also a great dealer down in LA area that'll ship one up to you. I think it was Carson Toyota, w/ dianne? Good luck!
just bought highlander , tow pkg, power seats, v6, privacy glass, mats, quick order pkg, toyoguard, paid $600 over invoice. $24900 + taxes etc. very good exp. south florida dealer, al hendrickson. they got the car i wanted the day after i was at the dealer. VERY good experience. love the suv.
Gwkiser, to answer your question, the CN is a cargo net and the L2 is grey leather interior; and I have been very happy with my vehicle so far. thanks.
Ajmal I purchased my vehicle from Jay Marks Toyota in Pasadena. Your best bet to get a similar deal would be to speak with the internet manager Mr. Moody. He assigned a salesperson to me (Sharon) and we eventually worked out the deal. It took a few days but I think I made out pretty well. But I should tell you that the 29,900 purchase price included a $400 rebate for being a recent college grad. I hope this helps and good luck.
Has anyone tried calling that 1-800 # mentioned at message #176 about a $150 voucher for the purchase of a Toyota. I just keep getting someone's voicemail and leaving a message, and no one has called back in a week.
Is this legititmate? Has anyone actually gotten the voucher?
Re: message #190: I can't help you with your question of if it is legit or not, however I went to the Web site referenced in message #176 (http://autopedia.com) and found info on one of the site's pages about rebates that reads "2000 Toyota...." ..note the reference to 2000...and mentions the $150 voucher. The page does not actually mention that the year listed is the model year the voucher is good for, though, so take a look at the site and page if you would like more info; perhaps someone else can clarify this for us. Here is a direct link to the autopedia page with the info I read, although as it notes on the autopedia page and site, and as we all know, these incentive programs often change; I saw the above info on the below link during the evening hours of July 25, 2001: http://autopedia.com/html/Rebate.html
I was the one who posted the message about the voucher. When you go there and it says for the year 2000 hit reload on your computer and then go back down and it should have 2000 and 2001. However I too have called and left a message . And no reply. I just happened to see this deal and thought we could all save a buck or two right. Anyway I will keep trying to contact them. I will let everyone know if it is real or not.
The so called lifetime wax treatment or paint protection by the dealership is pretty much a pure profit center for them. Even with the clear coat paints you should still wax ever other month or so. This will protect the paint/clear coat from acid rain, bird poop, road salts, etc.
I personally use a product by Zaino Bros. (www.zainobros.com) It takes a bit longer initially to apply to the car, but I feel its well worth the work.
That said... I use Maguires Cleaner Wax on my brides 2000 Accord. It sees a lot of use, and requires more maintenance to keep it spiffy.
The important thing is to keep some sort of "protection" on the paint/clear coat.
Recently purchased a Highlander V-6 from Jason (great guy) @ Poway Toyota in San diego, Ca. Options included DR, SR, TO, UQ, AG, CQ, HE, CF, and GN. We wanted a limited, but didn't want leather upholstery....couldn't find one, sooooo were forced to work around it. Invoice was $25,618....MSRP was $29,130....We paid $27,200. Actually had a better quote ($140 less) from the referral service at the Credit Union, but went to the dealer to verify the color, saw exactly what we wanted and my wife developed a slight case of new car fever. That's the last time I take her car shopping...smile. We determined exactly what options were desired, then visited all known internet auto sites, including Costco, AAA, & the C. U. Just shop, haggle, and stay out of the Dealerships until you have a firm price from someone. Glad we went with the V-6....Drove both.... the V-6 is super quick and milage so far is 21.5 MPG. We love the Highlander! Good Luck, Lickety
Hi, everyone! I'd like to buy a Highlander in Rochester, NY. Wonder if anyone has any information on prices paid for them in upstate New York (Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, etc...). I'm looking at the V6 4x4, with the Limited Package, 6 CD changer, leather, heated seats, side airbags, sunroof, VSC and tow prep. MSRP, including dest charge is $34,765. I know the invoice price is $30,300. Thanks for any info!
I have purchased my HL two months ago and did an extensive research. Finally, I purchased mine from Jennifer @ Toyota Sunnyvale. I paid about $2000 over the invoice. It was a bit higher than others but they have the exact HL I want (V6, 4x4, UN-limited, in Bluestone.) and Jennifer is pleasant to deal with. Basically, I sent her email twice and got the quote. When I went there, she gave me the key to test-drive, then close the deal.
I also went to Palo Alto and fremont, it was $2000 over the invoice, but they did not have much inventory for selection. I also "talk" to the Internet Manager at Piercy Toyota (San Jose), he quoted me $1500 over invoice for the car in the lot.
I went on the Carsdirect.com web site and found they were selling this model for only $550 over invoice. Sounded too good to be true, so I called them. At least for northern/central New Jersey, if the following factory-installed options are all you're looking for, then you just found yourself a terrific deal: FE, PG, DR, DL, CQ, and UZ. This would be configured as Model 6914FY at the local dealer. I would think Carsdirect could also arrange for any post production options you may want. Apparently, there are quite a number of these 2WD V6s just sitting on the dealers' lots and they want to get rid of them fast.
I had a great experience with Fremont Toyota. I delt with Young and Kuldeep the internet sales people. I negotiated a 2wd, v6 limited w/ leather and sun roof for $1000 over invoice on the telephone in less than 5 minutes. When i went in i had no problems at all. It was actually a pleasant experience. They ran a credit check on me and provided financing @ 7.5% which was a full point better than what I was quoted by eloan. This dealership sells a lot of vehicles, volume=good deals...I drove off the lot in 1.5 hours a happy camper. Good luck all, this chat room and web site really was helpful.
I am looking for a HL, 4WD, in Columbus, Ohio. Can anyone recommend a dealer. They don,t seem to be very flexible with price. Have been to both Tansky's and Germain Toyota in Columbus. Am interested to know what Hl ownwers in this area and nearby ares have paid. Thankyou
Thanks a lot Hobie for taking the time to tell me about the paint protection. I kind of thought it wasn`t any better then waxing on my own. All you guys are so nice to help out eachother on this town hall. I sure enjoy reading all the great stuff here. Take care Marcasoo
I did my internet homework (even got bids from local internet sales managers) and Team Toyota Lithia Springs came through hundreds of dollars less than others. And $3100 off the sticker price. I negotiated the price BEFORE I went in the showroom. The most painless car purchase ever!Corey, Internet sales manager. Don Goff sales associate.
I got 4x2 V6. Price: $33, 709 sticker (paid $30,598. Installed options:side airbags, 3-in-1 6-disc combo, leather, limited and tow prep packages, moonroof, vehicle skid control, center console, cargo liner, carpet mats and trunk mat, color-keyed fender flares. The worst driving conditions in Atlanta are rain and light snow; Consumer Reports states that 2WD with traction control is sufficient. Plus you get a price break, better gas mileage and less parts to break. Also, I compared insurance of a Highlander 2WD vs. 4WD and the 2WD was $425 less to insure annually.

Yet, considering the money I'm going to pay for a car, it was worth the $12 to see if it was worthwile. Maybe I'll get the refund...(not holding my breath)
Anyway, for the base invoice prices on 2WD Highlanders, it shows (not inc. destination charge):
4-cyl : $20,928
6-cyl : $21,408
When totalling up the MSRP prices for base + options in the CR report, I got the exact same price I saw on stickers at the dealer. Thus, I'm guessing that the invoice prices are correct.
I'm afraid with all the options they add I can't get an HL. It's over my budget.

What is it in FLorida. Figures you can't even get the holdback for toyota, without jumping threw loops.

And no reply. I just happened to see this deal and thought we
could all save a buck or two right. Anyway I will keep trying to
contact them. I will let everyone know if it is real or not.
I personally use a product by Zaino Bros. (www.zainobros.com)
It takes a bit longer initially to apply to the car, but I feel its well worth the work.
That said... I use Maguires Cleaner Wax on my brides 2000 Accord. It sees a lot of use, and requires more maintenance to keep it spiffy.
The important thing is to keep some sort of "protection" on the paint/clear coat.
Good Luck... Hobie
I also went to Palo Alto and fremont, it was $2000 over the invoice, but they did not have much inventory for selection. I also "talk" to the Internet Manager at Piercy Toyota (San Jose), he quoted me $1500 over invoice for the car in the lot.
This dealership sells a lot of vehicles, volume=good deals...I drove off the lot in 1.5 hours a happy camper. Good luck all, this chat room and web site really was helpful.
thought it wasn`t any better then waxing on my own.
All you guys are so nice to help out eachother on this town hall. I sure enjoy reading
all the great stuff here.
Take care Marcasoo
