Hey all...I finally drove a 4x4 XE w/SC. The ride felt great for a truck and the SC was admirable. I really didn't notice that much power difference...I thought it would be like a hammer...it felt really smooth actually. I test drove one w/o a SC about an hour before. Maybe I should drive them back to back with the regular 6 cylinder after the SC. Anyhow, it was the GoldRush color, like embassymarine and hotcoffee. Really nice. I will wait to see the SE with SC so I can see what the total package looks and feels like. I want to know how the 17s feel. I also want to listen to the RF stereo! I did notice one thing however, the rear brakes are drum. Is that usual for a truck especially a 2002 model? You can tell I am a SUV "virgin" so I don't know that much.

    Hello,

My husband and I test drove an Xterra SE 2WD a few months back and really liked it. We were planning on waiting until after Christmas to purchase but they are running $500 back plus 3.9% on 2001's now. Is there much difference between the 2001 and 2002 models. Either way I am interested in the SE 2WD.

This is the main question that I have. I live on the East Coast (MD) but we do have a place in WV, so we do travel over mountains and curved country roads. I am wondering about the power to go over mountains. They are not steep; if anyone is familiar with RT. 70 pass Fredrick and Hagerstown, MD. Now I have a 97 Grand Am with a V6 and I have to push on the gas pedal going up the mountains just to maintain speed. I also had a Firebird that I had too also (I guess because of the weight but it did do better than the Grand Am). I would like to know if anyone with an X has any input on this type of driving. This really drives me nuts since I am left behind on the uphill and then pass everyone on the downhill (I prefer to only see one vehicle once, LOL).

    Thanks for any information.

differences between the 2001, 2002 are mostly cosmetic- the interior is different, the front headlights are different. you are buying at a unique moment where you can get a new xterra in 2 different versions- whichever you like best or the best deal for you.

as for power, well the xterra has 170hp, which is a bit low for the freeway/ high rpm stuff. i like it fine except on the steep grades where it just sucks...well, not horrible but you won't be the 'leader of the pack' either.
i did read a review that said the xterra is excellent on twisty mountain roads (in a comparo with the jeep liberty).
i'm sure others here will post more for you.

2001 models are cheaper now since they are getting rid of them and you can get a 4x4 in a decent price range. But then again, you won't have the RF audio system along with the supercharger if you're really into horsepower. Also, the 2002 looks a lot better but has these incredibly cheap plastics making up the front. But, the rims look cooler along with the rack and they also changed the interior cloths which look better too. Again, it's the matter of you wanting an aesthetically better truck vs. pricing. Hope this helped.

I find there is enough ponies for light mountain ranges, driving through Vermont, New York, etc.. it stays at the speed limit anyway, just don't expect to pass too many people while at it.
As far as the upgrades on the 02 ( cosmetic ), I alway get my own rims (AR Outlaws ), stereo (12CD in dash), and seat covers, so it doesn't seem to make any difference to me and figure I'm ahead of any 02. At least with the money difference, you can take it and make your X your own.
  • janipoojanipoo Member Posts: 18
I went to the dealership yesterday since they were closed and I looked around. I seen the new 2002 model. This is my opinion but I really didn't care for the new front end. I really like the front end of the 2001 model. I am going to have to dealership see if they can locate a 2001, but they are really hard to find; especially if you are particular about the color. One dealership said that I was the only person who liked the Mineral Blue and thats why they didn't bring it back this year. I don't know I guess I am not as wild crazy like I used to be because I don't want to stand out in that new plastic color Shock Blue. So If I have to go with a 2002 the only color I care for is the White.
  • marlboroguymarlboroguy Member Posts: 17
I test drove the 2002 SE S/C....the S/C really kicks in and I liked it, definately noticeable, but not a HUGE difference, but enough to notice, especially if you drive the old one first...
For work, I have to travel the congested highways of the MA Pike/128 towards Boston, and I have to get on the highway and have to punch it sometimes to get in fast moving traffic, and this would help in this respect, among other types of driving situations...personally I like the new look of the 2002, being a current owner of a 2000 SE. I do agree that there is too much plastic in the front though. It doesn't look drastically different from the older model, which is good. The interior is nicer, the seats feel more comfortable (I'm not sure if they changed them), the RF sound system sounds much better and louder than the previous stereo (in the 2000, I had the 6 CD, but in the cargo area, not in dash). There is a temperature display above the rearview mirror, as well as steering wheel stereo controls, which I liked...
I really like the Gold Rush color, since I saw the post by Embassymarine. Thanks!!!
The only thing I don't like is the fact that you have to use premium gas in the S/C, but I guess if you like it enough and are willing to pay the $0.20 more per gallon, it is worth it.
Will let you know how I make out if I get one soon...am working with the dealer right now.

I bought my '02 about 5 weeks ago now and really couldn't be happier. It is a 4x4 5sp SE S/C in Lava. I have followed this forum for many months leading up to my eventual purchase, and greatly appreciate all of the useful info. Really didn't even like the X's at first until I test drove an '01. That was it, I was hooked. Came on-line to find out everything I could about them. Decided that as cool as the '01 is I like the added hp/torque of a S/C. My primary objective for new vehicle was supposed to be that a 130lb Newfoundland doesn't fit in a '68 mustang too well anymore. Found a perfect fit w/ the X. I am hitting some light trails and will stick w/ the 17" rims until I get brave enough and skilled enough to go on to more difficult trails that warrant some 15's. Happy Trails!

    Hello XCanuk,
I know you've been around on this board for a long time (further back than 4/2000, when I initially posted)...I've noticed that it is now very slow...what happened? I remember when people were posting to it ALL the time. Is there another Xterra chat board/site that is more popular that you would recommend?

    Thanks Steve,
I did post asking for feedback on the 2002's but I guess since it is so new, not a lot of people are buying them yet....I am too impatient :)

Well, if you are really desperate, a google.com search will turn up some competing forums (but promoting them here is frowned upon).

and let me put my teeth in ;) Make me feel like the old man of the board.. I remember when we had to hunt for the 3M fix. Mindie listed the "other" boards, Edmunds is still the most polite, which is a good thing. I think its only Xse and myself that still drop by.. I miss the spice of cycleboy, anneyeo, gonzo and the cast of characters that hung out when the X was soooo new.

...is also pretty much dead. Fame is a fleeting thing (ask Volkswagen). In fact, I'm surprised that the Xterra still gets this much attention in its third model year.

I personnally enjoy this forum (moderator: please send check) for its professionalism and in-depth questions, not shying away from technical stuff. Yahoo boards in particular have been subject to constant bickering (I suspect, from kids that don't even own a car).

Well, I am finally settled in here in NY. First of all thanks for the compliments on my truck! That is to everyone, I really appreciate it! I am growing fonder of my X everyday. Everyday I seem to turn heads and it makes me want to go out more to be seen more. But I am over it, I do not need to be in the spotlight, ok I'm lyin'! ha ha. Well i look forward to keep postingmore about the new Xterra's as people as the questions. I am goinging in for my first oil change and havenot even had my X a month. That drive from Dallas to NY put some milage on the wheels! Such is life! But damn, what a ride.

Hello, this is my first post.
I am about to purchase an Xterra. Since I hardly drive (>5000/year), I will share it with my 16 years old son who has started to drive. It is really the car HE wants and I have agreed to sell my current car and get one of those fun and sporty vehicles.
I like a certain level of comfort when it comes to seats. I have been blessed with wonderful seats on my 2001 BMW740. They have all adjustments possible and I know that the Xterra will be totally different in this regard. I read some reports that the Xterra seats might be the worst of all SUV. This could be frightening since we also have a 2001 Lincoln Navigator and I consider those seats the absolute worst seats ever (except for the 1998 Lincoln Navigators).
And this brings me to my question. Does anyone know a place where upgraded seats can be acquired for an Xterra?

Finally, anyone with a good recommendation for a dealer in Texas, either in El Paso or in the DFW aera?

    Thanks a bunch.
  • mindiemindie Member Posts: 109
Try out the seats first. I find that they are much more comfortable than most vehicle seats I've ever sat in, and I've been known to have trouble with my lower back on long trips. A recent straight 22 hour trip in my X didn't cause me any problems at all. Others have vastly different experiences, so it seems to be an individual evaluation.

If you do decide to go for aftermarket seats, you have a couple options. Most dealers will install them for you and charge you an arm and a leg. You might be able to get the dealer to tell you what local shop they use to do the installs though, and then you can go directly through the shop instead of using the dealership as a middleman. I believe that leather seat kits come up on ebay every once in awhile as well... something like $599, but then you have to install them yourself or pay someone else to do it for you. Some people have bought aftermarket seat covers that provide some extra padding and comfort. Nissan sells some, or you can check out www.wetokole.com for some that are a little cushier. They do come at a price though... something in the range of $400-$450 for a full front and backseat set.

As far as dealerships in Dallas, try Courtesy Nissan in Richardson. I'm not familiar with any dealers in El Paso.

    Hope this helps!

I put leather in my X and feel the seats are even more comfortable.

A few X owners are heading out this Sunday to the Peter's Mill trail located right near Front Royal, VA. If interested in attending, please respond and I'll give you details.

It's a fun trail, but not really "hardcore". You won't get any body damage unless you take a few of the side trails and wander into some of the more difficult spots. But the main trail is fine. And there will be a few of us with recovery gear should sombody get stuck. Open to novices, experts, anybody. Time permitting, we may also scout another trail nearby.

Most browsers let you tweak the font size setting (View > Text Size, etc.) My soon to be 49 year old eyes like the "large" setting - I'm saving the "largest" setting for my big 5-0 birthday present to myself :-).

    Hey Xcanuk -

You are among friends...there is no need to exagerate. We all know you are still running on a DOS machine! By the way...anyone have any experience with the new iBook? I am considering one because MAC is the standard for my industry...I know that's a horrible word...but I have grown to love them. However, I'll never get rid of my PC.

    BEN
  • xsexse Member Posts: 66
new ibook rocks! the titanium powerbook is awesome too but the ibook is the better value...only real downside is the smaller screen.

im the opposite- never worked a pc --always a mac man!
  • xtirol9xtirol9 Member Posts: 27
Xcanuk - You're still using an ancient OS? Wow, I'm impressed. Get Windows XP!

Xse - Apple's?? Who the heck would want to buy sorry pieces of hardware? I'm sorry, but Pentium 4's are the BEST chips out in the market and Apple's just doesn't cut it. Sorry. :-P
  • xcanukxcanuk Member Posts: 372
PC's have there place, but so do mac's. Each has its place, as far as I'm concerned ibook or any mac kicks it when it comes to graphics. ( played with a few ) If I wasn't such a number cruncher, I might have switched.
Just to make this X related, who uses a laptop for navigation.. I use Microsoft maps & trips myself.. pretty good for something on the go.

I am on an iMac right now- wireless "airport" DSL.

I sit at my kitchen table on battery power, full internet speeds without a SINGLE wire attached to my machine. Truly a wonder.

Check out OSX before getting a MAC with 9. I am still on 9, and am in awe of the new operating system software.
    Good luck!!

Anyone heard about a special 3.9 and 4.9 APR offer on 02 Xterra's? I just found it on Edmunds...just wondering if it was true or a typo??????

    BEN
  • janipoojanipoo Member Posts: 18
They are offering 3.9% financing on 02 XTerra's. I also had another dealer in my area only offer 4.9% though, so I guess they are holding a percent for themselves; that's why I am not going to purchase with them. I am having a hard time finding the X I want and I am getting frustrated. I am almost tempted to look for another make. I have been talking with a dealership in another state so we will see.

It was my understanding that the promo APR depended on the time period of the loan. For example: 3.9% = 1-36 months and 4.9% = 37-60 months. The dealer would have no reasont o bargain with the APR...they are only looking to sell the car at the highest price in order to make the highest gross profit. Financing actually has nothing to do with the dealer...they might at times get some promotional benefits for signing a loan through Nissan Financial but they would gain nothing from "holding back" 1% on the APR. Just a little info to ease your troubled mind.

    BEN
  • janipoojanipoo Member Posts: 18
I have been talking to so many dealers this week. One told me that the financing was 4.9% and the other ones told me it was 3.9% so I was thinking that the one was trying to make a few bucks. After I posted the last message I looked up the incentives here on Edmund's that you were talking about and I see that the financing is split for different terms. So maybe carmax and the others were reading the wrong term but I told the salesperson that another dealership said the financing was 4.9%. I am working with a dealership in another state about a 2001 X, XE 4WD fully loaded and I should be able to get it for the price of a 2WD. I really like the front end on the 2001 model better than the 2002.

Also, if anyone has any information on the reliabitlity of the Xterra's or what kind of problems they might have incountered with theirs and would like to share; I would appreciate it.

You spend too much time in it, playing with it, taking trips just for the hell of it.
I've had mine for almost 2 years, oil changes only, overall, very happy with it over the miles.
There have been some lemon X's out there with lists of problems, but very rare, and no real recalls on it ( except for one for the early 00 models )
The key to happiness with the X is knowing you are getting a basic truck and very easy to customize to your liking.

Can the '02 4x4 SE/SC be so popular for a dealer to charge 1200 over invoice? I have the fine opportunity to drive away an owner for 28k (with destination charge). What did others on the board pay for the new Xterra?

Also; has anyone had good experiences with Autobytel or carsdirect.com?

I just drove my 2001 Just Blue SE 4x4 Xterra off the lot today. I have wanted one for so long that I still can't believe that it is finally mine. I love it. I can't wait to get it out in the dirt.

I know that there is a club in eastern NC, my area, but I haven't been able to find a good link for it yet. Does anyone on this list know a good web link for them?

    Thanks,

    Tammy

well, back in '99 when i bought my xterra- i went thru carsdirect and they were great. they paid me $500 to use them and had a no haggle price below msrp. that was when i had the ONLY one in my area and EVERYONE was "hey, cool what is that?"

when i went to the dealer to check out my xterra, they had the window sticker at $30K! actually, all their xterra's were between $29-$33K- total b.s. but i didnt have to deal with that.

i have no idea what they are like now, but would be inclined to recommend them from my experience

i thought i should give fair warning here:
when i got a freeway blowout on my xterra, the jack would not fit in the specified location at the rear. the jack they provide is too tall.
that's the short story with all my explitives deleted- but on the side of the freeway, i wanted to launch that jack into the brush!

anyway, there are other spots you can jack from--but everyone should be aware of this just in case the worst happens and you flat out, look at the manual, and find you cannot jack from the indicated location.

nissan needs to recall the jack or rewrite the manual.
steve, are you in contact with edmund's staff? maybe they can call nissan about it

anyway, i was pretty pissed at the time- i jacked up the truck ok but its scary when you're not sure if youre damaging the truck or risking the jack falling!

this is true for any vehicle, but take the time to learn how to lower the spare and use the jack!!

btw, i got the blowout at about 70mph in the carpool lane and had to cross over 4 lanes to the shoulder with a complete flat. the xterra was utterly stable and in control- i did not even realize i flatted at first except for the LOUD howling noise that sounded like a semi-truck next to me.
