Dunno what an indy is, but the pulleys will sing if you use belts with ridges. OEM belts are cheaper and work better, and aftermarket belts are not matched. You need a matched set for the alternator.

The starter on a uzj100 is very difficult to reach. I have been told the intake manifold has to be removed. I don't know if that's true.

well, we got a used '03 LC with the Nav system. We did not want the Nav actually, thought we'd have no use for it but wanted this particular rig. Well, I'm reconsidering about the Nav. Besides the nifty gadget side (always a treat for me), I can see now how one would want one of these things. Admittedly it does not do that much for you if you drive only in your local neighborhood, but if you are in a big city and need to go places, it sure would come in handy. Although admittedly with no other experience with a Nav system, I also found it pretty accurate and user friendly. Nicely done. Anybody knows how to get into the system to get the DVD out, btw?

anybody knows of an inexpensive wheel (preferably steel but alloy would do) that would fit an '03 LC? The '03 has the 5x150mm pattern and the wheel has to be at least 17", I think, to accommodate the brakes.
Any info on where to find one? I can't find any source at all.
    (Or anybody wants to sell/trade?)
(also have a new 18" Bridgestone Dueler if somebody is interested - I'd sell or trade for a Dunlop Grand Trek)
    thanks

seen some aftermarket keys for the late LCs, that have the remote buttons and programming transmitter.
Anybody has any first hand experience as to whether these are OK or not?
    thanks

No buying or selling on the boards please.

I have 5 rims around my house that are steel universal ones (lots of lug nut holes!). But your size and brake issue may make it tougher to find. Try a tire shop. Or eBay. Thanks,

e9999. You'll learn to appreciate the Nav System the more you find out about it and how helpful it can be. I took about a 7 week/ 6K cross country drive in my '02 this fall and the NS got me out of and around some traffic jams, plus helped me find restaurants, etc. Of courser if you do know where you're going and put in the destination anyway, you may find your self telling the "lady" to be quiet as she "corrects" your route.

I read the following on another forum:

Unique wheel offer 17x8 steel wheel with 5x150 bolt pattern. They are the only one making them and when my dealer called last week they are out of stock until sometime early next spring when they start making another run.

They are available in 3 style. Black D window with fake bead lock look, Chorme 7 spoke wagon wheels regular black D window.
Discount tire quote me $53 each for 17x8 Black D window.

I've got a bridge for sale that I would love to show anyone who would pay 1K for a rebuilt starter motor and the installation.

Lets run some numbers: say the rebuilt starter retailed at $400 (a local guy could probably throw in brushes and an armature for 25% of that but that would require some initiative on the part of vehicle owner) leaving $600 for installation. At say $85 per hour that means they billed him for 7 hours to swap out a starter. Maybe the dealer added in an "environmental charge" (you know, for all those toxic fluids that you have to dispose of when you throw in a starter).

    Anything wrong with this picture??

sorry, Steve, didn't think about posting restrictions. Duly noted. Can't seem to be able to erase the offending part. Sorry.

Yes, the wheel size is odd. Did try many places already. No luck.

    thanks

thanks Steward, but had already explored that possibility and it did not pan out. Apparently that info was not correct.

joeblow1, an "indy" is an independent mechanic.

My indy got a set of oem belts for the alternator. There is apparently a specific non-ridged belt for my 97 LC. The toyota parts counter at first offered up a sets of ridged belts, but the service manager vaguely remembered a problem with whistling belts and found the right part number belts for my LC. Smooth belts and no whistling.

There seems ot be a very limited number of new '04 LC's available? Is that true nationwide? In the Chicago land area they indicate that there is a "limited supply" In South East Florida market, they also say there are not many available.
Looking for an '04 LC with specific equipment and color.
Is this vehicle that limited in production, or is it that demand exceeds the supply that strongly?

Want to purchase one after doing all the research... but want specific options and colors..

There are plenty here in So Cal. Of course you won't find as many LCs as you will Camrys. The areas you've looked in don't seem to be that large a market for LCs anyway. On my recent cross country drive I didn't see many LCs until I got to the east coast.

You might try doing a search on Longo Toyota's site. They're a very large dealer and seem to have at least 6-8 LCs at any one time (out of a total vehicle inventory of about 300 or so)

I currently have an 03 Acura MDX with the integrated rear view camera. I love it! Now that the 04 LC has that feature I'm interested in switching. Problem is that there are virtually no 04 LCs in the Philadelphia area. I like the dark Gray version and a local dealer has a leftover 03. Has anyone ever been able to add a rearview camera to a pre-2004 LC?

Down here in South Florida, Kendall Toyota has access to around 60 LC's. Although there isn't much need for them down here, there is a big market, especially for the Lexus LX470. Seems everyone around here has to have the latest and greatest toys.

With a base price of $54,765 what do you add on to bump the price to $63?

I am getting close to taking the LC plunge but am having trouble locating a 2004 LC with the specific options that I want. Let me say that I like the looks of the running boards/roof rack option pkg and the safety of the curtain air bags, but I don't necessarily have a need for the $3K navigation system or the 18 inch bling, bling wheels. My dealer informs me, however, that all such options are in production of the LC for the foreseeable future and that a special order to exclude these options can take 3-4 months or longer.

At the end of the day, I guess I can get used to the navigation system (although its mainly for show - not much day to day functionality), but I have to draw the line with the over the top 18 inch bling wheels. They just look too Range Rover/Escaladish. I realize the wheels are a $80 option, but it may very well be the straw that breaks a $55K deal. It seems tough to imagine that Toyota would force these "options" down the consumers throat.

Any experience out there on locating/ordering a "base" LC?
  • bobbio56bobbio56 Member Posts: 37
add the dvd, convenience pkg. and a couple of smaller items and you're @63k....thanks
  • gteach26gteach26 Member Posts: 576
That's Lexus LX territory! Luckily you got it down to a more reasonable 54K. For about 60k you can get the LX with standard Navigation, plusher insides etc. But rear ent. system would be extra though.

You're right though, those extras you mention do tend to bump up the cost quite a bit. In any case, enjoy your cruiser!
  • zinny2zinny2 Member Posts: 46
The ride is much more smooth. There simply is a feel of luxury in this car. I do not see the need to pay the extra $$ for the Lexus. (other than the memory seats).

How do I adjust the sensitivity of the auto headlights on my 99 TLC? Mine are way too sensitive... Thanks
  • blockislandguyblockislandguy Member Posts: 336
flyfish4life, stand firm. I'll bet the dealer could find just what you wanted without the extra crap. And before he sniffs that the extra stuff you don't want/need is only 4K tell him that that is AFTERTAX money. To make 4K take-home you have to earn 5K+ on your W2. And even for a guy making a lowly 100K a year(!) thats still two and a half weeks of work that you could be out flyfishing.

If he still can't find one, tell him to call you when the unit he needs to order for your consideration comes in.

I am looking at '99 and '00 LC's. I have read about the bass boom-boom, and went out and listened to one. It is annoying! Can you bypass this? Maybe put in your own subwoofer?

    Thanks for your response!

Last week the Toyota Dealer in Ardmore, OK had two 03's loaded(including DVD). Best offer then was $52K. Good Luck

    went yesterday...they are @ 56k for a @63k msrp...the color is grey/tan...i am going back today to do final battle....thanks to all...will shoot for 52...maybe get 54....
  • steelcruisersteelcruiser Member Posts: 402
right now? I think you can probably get an '04 (loaded) for about 54K--especially as we get deeper in to the model year. Seems a better option than getting an '03. Just my .02

No matter what you decide though, I'm sure you'll be pleased with your LC

I have lost all keys to my Crusher except one "valet" key which does everything except open glove box. I have purchased aftermarket key w transponder, but it cannot be programmed by dealers or locksmith. I am told only if I have the original key can I clear the codes from the ECM and/or program a new key. Using the VIN# to buy a new key will also not work per dealer. They say the only solution is to replace the ECM at a cost of $1000.+ Does anyone know a reasonable solution?
My LC has over 130K trouble free, didn't even replace timing belt until 128k and it still looked ok, although the serpentine belt was starting to look worn. Any others out there with higher mileage on V8 LCs, don't worry, you should get 250k from this engine, just look at all the Lexus LS400s with over 250K + miles. I use this LC to tow a 5000lb trailer and it puts the Suburban I used to own to shame (the Sub was pretty much worn out at 125K whereas the LC still drives like new.

I have an '04 LC with the RR option. I would like to remove the running boards. There seems to be two types of bolts securing the running board (hangers?). Is there anything that should be done or not done when removing the hanger bolts? Seems straight forward but you never know.

    Thanks'

I have a 03 LC and am getting about 11 mpg and I went on a road trip up to oregon (I live in s. cali) and I was averaging only 14mpg. Can other LC owners tell me wat there averaging on gas mileage and give me some advice on how to improve it.
  • grantchstrgrantchstr Member Posts: 371
I have an Fj80 1991 and I get around 14 mph using 87 gas. However it seems to use a lot more in the really cold weather. On long trips I have got the mileage up to around 15/16 ish.
I am interested in your question on how to improve gas mileage as I have been trying to figure this out myself.
My research indicates that an expensive air filter might help - will it, anybody?
Also a new (special) manifold would appear to improve fuel efficiency but it wont be worth the cost probably. Comments on the manifold - or any other ideas?
  • albivalbiv Member Posts: 35
I have an '03 and just returned from a 2000 mile road trip. I averaged around 17.5 mpg highway. This included driving through the Appalachian mountains. When I was on flat land I averaged 75 mph. In the city I average around 15 mpg. I don't do much except avoid off the line hard accelerations and try to coast when there is a red light in the distance. I keep my tires properly inflated as well. I have noticed that after 7000 miles the city mileage has gotten better by about 2mpg.
  • curious54curious54 Member Posts: 47
I too went on a road trip (post #3435) and took me over 2000 miles but i averaged lesser than you. I put in high octane gas, and i also have a K&N filter but i get less miles. Does this mean there is something worng with my car internally (ex, fuel injectors) and is it something I can go to the dealers about?
  • albivalbiv Member Posts: 35
How much less did you average?

Not sure what the dealer will tell you. I always use high octane gas. I noticed that I did get worse gas mileage using the cruise control, especially in the mountainous areas. In the past I have experienced times with very bad gas mileage (around 11mpg) after a tankful, but I could never pinpoint the reason, and those times were not very often. Lately (past 4 months) I have not had a less than 15 mpg average (all city driving) tankful of gas. I use Mobil 1 5w-30 but I don't think that it would get any better gas mileage (especially 4mpg better) than conventional oil.
  • curious54curious54 Member Posts: 47
HAHAHA...its so funny how we do almost the same things to our car. I too put Mobil one super synthetic. I average in the city 11-12 mpg which suks and on highway i get barely 14 mpg.
  • albivalbiv Member Posts: 35
The other thing I can think of is how much idling you do as well as how much time you spend in bumper to bumper traffic. That would decrease your MPG.

Did you notice any performance increase using the K&N?
  • ibleaveibleave Member Posts: 13
I have a 2002 TLC with about 20K miles on it (a great vehicle, I must add). I recently took the TLC to Toyota for scheduled maintenance and asked them to investigate the anti-reflective coating coming off the DVD screen (right in the spot where you must touch the screen to acknowledge the "I agree"). Well, I was told today that problem is not a manufacturer's defect and the repair is under my own account. Just wanted to get any feedback from others on this discussion (and if anyone has had similar problems and if so, what was your resolution).

    Thanks!
  • albivalbiv Member Posts: 35
I have an '03 LC and just got back from a trip which took we into the Appalachian mountains. I experienced something unique. While on the highway I was descending a steep hill in Drive and noticed that my rpm was close to 3k and my speed was about 50mph. Normally the LC run under 2k at this speed in Drive. I doubled checked the cruise control to make sure it was off (it was). Once I got to the bottom of the hill I tapped the accelerator and immediately the LC shifted up to 2 gears gear and the RPM dropped to normal. Anybody experience this in their late model LC?

    Thanks

Attended the Los Angeles International Auto Show this week. While visiting the Toyota displays I spoke to one of the Toyota honchos. I asked him if there were plans in the near or distant future to "scrap" the Land Cruiser. His answer was an emphatic "NO". The name Land Cruiser is so closely tied to the Toyota marque, it will never be discarded. I then asked him about the new size. He suggested there are no plans to change the size. Perhaps a modest change in exterior design in 2006. Until then, just constant refinements. That's about it!!
  • grantchstrgrantchstr Member Posts: 371
Thanks for your scoop. I am relieved as thats a major reason I bought a LC to start with. Bought one in 1990 right after I saw the new Fj80 model at the NY Auto Show in the belief that Toyota keep their models a long long time. Thats good for resale value. So far its only cost me $2,300 a year fully amortized - that'll be down to $2,000 a year by 2005 or only $166/month!
  • steelcruisersteelcruiser Member Posts: 402
the same input from the Toy reps at the show. A local dealer GM that I know said the same thing about the next generation LC relative to styling changes--

And BTW, seems to me that every year at the El Lay show, the LCs have more people crawling all over them than just about any thing else. Wonder how that 16cyl Caddy engine would look stuffed in to an LC =)

I have a 99 with 93K on it, 80% freeway, 20% city driving, averaging about 15.5 mpg. K&N did very little improvement. Put in Mobil one super synthetic 2 years ago, improved mileage about .5 mpg, better than the K&N filter, I was very surprise.
  • lzhou1147lzhou1147 Member Posts: 6
One more thing, according to performanceproduct.com, the Borla exhaust will improve gas mileage. I do not have it but am planning to get one later this year.
  • vavavavolvovavavavolvo Member Posts: 110
anybody know any v-8 powered 5500lb vehicles with lots of low end torque that get much better mileage? We may be dealing with some inescapable laws of mechanics and thermodynamics. May be better off modifying the front end so it comes to a point like the QEII, or lopping off everything aft of the transfer case and putting a third wheel back there in the middle. Would probably improve the turning radius as an added benefit.
