ABS is not an option for Civic, it is standard and only available on Civic EX. Go figure. ABS is optional for Corolla I believe. ABS will prevent brake lock up during emergency situation. IMO It's very important to have it.

Hey. I'm buying my first new car. I'm loking at the 2002 Honda EX with dual side airbags in blue sedan. I got quoted at 16,900. OTD priced at 18500. I was wondering if anyone lived in connecticut or had any advice for where i might want to think about going from here.

Also, if anyone has an advice on selling my car now that would be great. It's a 1992 chrysler lebaron convertible.

    thanks.

I own a 2002 Honda Civic EX Sedan (automatic and dual side airbags) in the Eternal Blue Pearl and love it :) I paid $16,504 (invoice) plus mud guards, floor mats, alarm system, scotch guarding on the seats (I regret getting the alarm and scothguarding) and wheel locks plus taxes and tags. All total I paid $19,090.11 for everything mentioned. They threw in the undercoating for free (oh joy oh joy, lol).

I love the car, feel I got a great price and am glad I went with a 2002 Honda Civic EX Sedan over the VW Jetta 1.8T Sedan I was looking at. I hope I'm one of the many that gets atleast 100,000 miles out of their Honda.

    Best of luck,

    Carrie

Just bought my automatic LX (no side bags) with Lojack/keyless entry/alarm, and all charges EXCEPT tax for $15,600. I was referred to Majestic Honda in West Warwick, RI by AAA's online no-haggle buying service. I worked with their rep, Mike Girard. There truly was no BS and it was fast, easy, etc. I can hardly believe it. It was like buying a gallon of milk, not a car. DEFINITELY worth it for anyone in Southern New England to check this out! No, I have NO connection to the dealer.

I just bought a 4 dr auto EX with side airbags at 16,900. The MSRP was $18,500. I went to Conicelli Auto in Conshohocken. I had a great experience!!

    Hi:

Is the destination fee included in the invoice price?

What do you all think of this quote (SF Bay Area):
"We will offer you a 2002 Honda Civic EX 4dr sedan with automatic transmission in any color you desire for $15,926. This is valid through
6/23 and is plus tax, destination, dmv, doc and tire fee. Our price includes a full tank of gas, and as our gift to you, door edge guards
and wheel well moldings (a $258 value) to help protect your vehicle against damage."

About how much will this be out the door?
    Thanks,
    Tam
  • bjk2001bjk2001 Member Posts: 358
    Tam:

See if you can talk them out of not paying destination charge which is about $440. With destination charge, tax, lic, doc tire... all the dealer lists you should get out of door just less than $18,000.

    Good luck,

You can always e-mail the dealer back and ask to quote you the total price, with a breakdown of each cost (tax, destination, tire fee, etc).

What dealer are you dealing with? I dealt with Larry Hopkins Honda. I have no regrets.
  • spiffyclagalspiffyclagal Member Posts: 4
    Thanks, hounddog69 and bjk2001...

Will they knock off the destination charge? I've read that it's generally not negotiable... but I'll try.
I've gotten all of my quotes over email from dealerships in the Bay Area... I'm most interested in getting it in Berkeley because I live here, and would rather not go far, and because I want my tax dollars to stay here. I've gotten lower quotes elsewhere, and will bring those emails to them and ask them to beat them.

I've actually hated my interactions with Larry Hopkins Honda... the guy has refused to give me a quote over email, and instead emails me these cheesy onliners ("Now is the time to buy, isn't it? Call me!")... Not sure if I should bother trying to talk to someone else there.
  • hounddog69hounddog69 Member Posts: 34
I actually paid $300 under invoice and the destination fee was included. The sales tax will be the rate of your local residence, so if the tax is 8.5% in Berkeley, that's what you will be charged regardless of where you purchase your car.

I think El Cerrito Honda is nearby you.

    Hey y'all,
Does anyone know when the 2003 civic coupe will hit the market? I haven't found any information about them. Just curious! Thanks.
  • augustroseaugustrose Member Posts: 3
I got this offer, "this week on the 2002 Honda Civic LX Coupe Manual for $12,950.00" This included the destination charge.

What do y'all think? Is that a good deal?
Oh, I'm in Los Angeles, btw.

    -AR

Editted to add, invoice price is 14,090.
  • raybearraybear Member Posts: 1,795
    Is $14,091, yes, that's a good deal!
  • leeshawjrleeshawjr Member Posts: 1
First of all, I love it. I scored; no stole the car at $11,988, about $2,200 UNDER INVOICE! Those, "One at this price" deals are real. Just be careful that the dealer does not try to add ANYTHING to the car, PERIOD.

I am moving to the NJ next week and am thinking about buying a Civic. Can someone recommend a dealer around New Brunswick / Piscataway ? Or maybe tell me which dealer to avoid ? I will have plenty to do while I am getting settled so I won't have time for a bad dealer.
    Thanks !

do you guys know if the dealer does window tinting also?
  • bjk2001bjk2001 Member Posts: 358
    christian9:

Yes dealer will tint your window for you, but they typical send your car out to professional tint shop too. So why pay dealer's price, you could take to tint shop yourself and cut off the middle man.

At Boch Honda today I negotiated what I thought was a good price at $14,200 for a Civic LX with automatic transmission for my 21 year old daughter.
Then comes the finance guy who in the blink of an eye sold us a Lockjack system with alarm and keyless for $550.
Because my daughter does not have a job and little credit experience he offered 7.49% financing with her as the primary borrower and I as the cosigner. So here are the final numbers:
    MSRP $16,370
    Invoice $15,003
    Purchase price $14,200
    Lojack/alarm $ 550
    Tax @ 5% $ 738
    Title $ 80
    Document prep $ 198

    Total out-the-door $15,766
    Insurance $ 2,829
This is not what I call cheap. Could I have done better?
  • raybearraybear Member Posts: 1,795
I'd say you did just fine. There's only $250 dealer cash on the Civic. I think you could have done better on financing with Peoplefirst, depending on your credit.
  • doliver99doliver99 Member Posts: 2
Just wanted to second the plug for PeopleFirst. I financed my last car with them and will do it for the next one too. Totally cool company & very easy to deal with.

I have decided to buy a Civic EX and have been reviewing the invoice prices on Edmunds as well as reading the car advertisements in the newspaper. The newspaper ads list an emission testing charge as well as taxes, document fees etc. Is this a new fee and how negotiable is it?
  • bjk2001bjk2001 Member Posts: 358
    slee10

There is no emission testing charge ( SMOG check) for new vehicle in Ca.

    Thanks raybear and dolivar99:
It appears from your comments that Peoplefirst offers terrific finance deals. This was the choice I faced. If I was the primary borrower I could get financing through AAA at 4.99%. However, my insurance agent cautioned against being a part owner because in the event of a liability claim they could come after me.
So in the end we chose to have everything in my daughter's name (title, insurance and loan) with me a co-signer on the loan at 7.49%.
I will look into Peoplefirst though, probably refinancing the car note.
  • bjk2001bjk2001 Member Posts: 358
    deluxcar:

Well interesting thought from your insurance agent. So in the event of liability claims it's ok to let them go after your daughter? You must have lots of property to avoid the liability claims then. Why don't you buy more liability insurance?
Instead of refinance thru people's first, why don't you get home equity loan and pay off the 7.49% then ask your daughter to pay home equity loan payment for you?

    Regards,

    bjk
  • deluxcardeluxcar Member Posts: 47
Good suggestion about taking out a home equity loan, that way she can make the payments (at a much lower rate) and I would get a tax benefit on the interest payments.
The downside is that she might not make the payments relying instead on her most generous parents to bail her out.

I'll have to think about it some more before committing myself to an arrangement that I might regret.

First time buyer looking into a certified 1999 Civic VP sedan with 40,000m going for 12K.

What do you all think is a fair, good, or excellent price?

Edmunds says its worth 10K so should I start at 9k and go up from there?

This is all such a grey area, Anyone's experiences would help with regard to handling dealers.

How shall I negotiate to get a good deal?

    thanks in advance,
    Struggling student

What's the trade in value on 1999 Civic VP? I would start with trade in value.

    Hi!
I'm new in the US and buying my first car over here - I'd appreciate you people's advice..! I've had an offer from a dealer for a new Honda 2002 LX Coupe 2dr AT, at $761 below invoice (14,149 inc dest) - which sounds like a great deal. However, the dealer I spoke to said he had 14 LXs sitting on his forecourt - he's going to have a job shifting all those before the 2003 models come out (soon?) isn't he? Do you know if there's any big factory to dealer incentives out at the moment or coming out soon? Were there last year? Are LXs selling slower than Honda thought?
    Any thoughts appreciated..Thanks!
  • raybearraybear Member Posts: 1,795
There's $250 dealer cash to support the price. That said, I know dealers who refuse to sell below invoice, and 14 cars isn't a lot when we're talking Civics. Depending on where you are located you have a good to great deal already.
  • deluxcardeluxcar Member Posts: 47
A 2-door Civic LX Coupe at $14,149 is not a particularly good price. In Boston yesterday we picked up our 4-door Civic sedan with AT for $14,200.
The dealer said they had about 35 Civics on their lot, which they heavily discount as loss leaders, at $750 below invoice.

The manager said they don't mind selling the Civic's below invoice since they more than make up for it on the Odyssey, a minivan in such high demand that buyers have to wait 90 days for one.

As a matter of fact there are no minivans available for test drives so one buys on blind faith. Also, I read somewhere that Honda has a silent $1,000 cash back incentive to dealers on the Civic.

I have to throw my 2 cents in here. Civic and Accord in Southern California are dirt cheap now. Well it has been cheap for the last few months. I saw some Civic LX AT Sedan from local dealer ad @ $13,688 including destination charge. $1400 below the invoice. We bought our EX 4 dr 2 months ago @$14,988 $1700 below the invoice. A friend purchased Civic EX 4 DR AT 2 weeks ago @ $14,995 which including door edge guards, mud gaurds and floor mats too!

Thanks people for your awesome feedback! That all really helps me out a lot. Gives me an invaluable idea of the kind of price I should be going for!

    hi all,
i'm really confused. can someone explain to me why if some dealers are willing to sell an EX sedan auto for $14,988 (to bjk2001, for example), then how come they can't do $14,258 (the price of the civic ex auto less $730) for an EX coupe 5-speed? i'm looking for the latter and i live in socal. from the impression i get, it seems that sticks aren't as popular, so wouldn't the dealers want to get rid of them?
    thanks!
  • raybearraybear Member Posts: 1,795
It may depend on the market you're in and availability of the cars. If you aren't willing to travel to the outlying areas, you may just be talking to the wrong dealers.

Today would be a really good day to put in some effort, try emailing the dealers or go online with one of the services, it is the end of the month.
  • bjk2001bjk2001 Member Posts: 358
    elcapitan:

Because I am special. LOL! We never looked @ 5 sp, for my daughter doesn't know how to drive a stick shift. I believe dealers in so cal are selling Civic EX 5 speed in great discount too. I think all the Civic and Accord are in the same boat. I just looked today's LA Times not much there, have to wait till toward the end of the week to see Civic 5 sp discount.

    bjk
  • raybearraybear Member Posts: 1,795
There is $1250 dealer cash on the Accord and only $250 on the Civic. You can get either well below invoice in Southern California and some of the Bay Area dealers are moving nicely also.
  • elcapitanelcapitan Member Posts: 5
    silver coupe ex, 5 spd:
    selling price: 14500
    doc fee: 45
    tax (approx): 1200
CA tire fee (and I couldn't figure out what that was): 5
    title/license: 139
    OTD: 15,889

I think that's a pretty good deal, right? I was getting really tired of jumping from dealer to dealer, and finally, today someone called me back and said he wanted to meet his quota so he'll give me the car. Not for the price I wanted, mind you, but better than having no car. =)

I have a question regarding financing and credit. The financing guy was telling me that since this is my first new car purchase, I should try to finance at least a part of it (10k) so that it will be easier for me to finance a more expensive car down the line, and that I should try to make about 15 payments (and then I can pay it off) - then I will have established a 1-year car history. Since I have excellent credit right now, is it necessary for me to finance the car or should I just pay it off cash? The rate they were giving me was 7.09% (since I'm a recent college grad i couldn't get them to give me better), and my bank is willing to give me 6.25%.
    What do you think?
  • bjk2001bjk2001 Member Posts: 358
    elcapitan:

    Congrats for your new Civic.

Don't listen to dealer's finance guy. He is trying to make money from you. He tries to get kicked back from bank when you finance thru them. If you want to finance go with your bank lower rate. He is full of it. I could bet my house well thow in wife and kids too if you tell him you get 6.25% from your bank and he will match the rate. It happened to me many times, at the beginning sale told me finance rate I asked was too low. Then right before I sign the paper finance guy will come in and match the rate even beat it.
A few years back I took one of wife's friend to a local dealer (Toyota in Puente Hill) to purchase a Camry per newspaper ad price by CASH. Sales came out straight telling her/us, she can't pay cash and buy that car. The ONLY way she can get the car in that price is to finance thru them and she could even pay it off after the first payment. Of course sales also told her that she needs to establish her credit routine, like what your sales told you. NO CREDIT IS BETTER THAN CASH. DUH!. Anyway, we walked out the Toyota dealership. That's B#$%^^&*. And wife's friend ended with a MB E320. LOL.

    Good luck,

    bjk

If it doesn't make a difference creditwise, i think i'll just stick with paying my parents back (with interest, of course). keeps the money in the family. =)

bought 2002 red honda ex civic 5 speed manual. MSRP around 16,800. Dealer offered it for $16,000. countered with $15,500 and the deal was made. added mud guards ($120), floor mats ($99) and sun roof wind breaker ($120). what are others paying for similiar model? good luck.

Dear Civic owners, I am looking for a 2002 Civic EX (4-dr, auto) in New Jersey where my gf lives. Her old car jsut broke down. Is anyone here from that area? What's the best offer (including financing) you can get? I appreciate your input.
  • erinkkerinkk Member Posts: 6
Will I really get a better deal buying a 2002 Civic Coupe EX or can I get close to a good deal when the 2003 comes out? My last quote was $700 below invoice which is less than $16000.
BTW, what exactly is custom tail lights? A dealer quoted me two different prices for the EX Coupe..one was with not addl stuff...and the other was the showroom model with custom tail lights on it. I wasn't quite sure what they looked like.
    Thanks!

    Kate:

Whether is it a good price or not, depends on where do you live. $700 below invoice maybe a good deal for some area, but it is a TERRIBLE deal in LA, So California. $1,700 below invoice in LA is a good deal.
Customer tail lights: Without seeing the car, I have to guess: Dealer took off the Honda Civic stock Red tail light and put on some Clear (maybe amber) tail light, I think if you look at Lexus IS 300 or new Altima, you could get some idea.

    Good luck!

I live in Georgia and was quoted $399 doc fees. Is that outrageous? I see some of your messages from CA mentioned doc fees of $45 and $99!
It's mid-August, so would and offer from me of $1500 below invoice be out of line? Also, is this $460 destination charge negotiable?
    Advice is appreciated.
  • bjk2001bjk2001 Member Posts: 358
    wendyd;

Yes, $399 doc is outrageous. What do they have to do for $399? Just another way to make more money. All the paperwork in on computer now,all they have to do is to go to DMV and register car for you. Geesh! We paid $45 in So Ca.
$460 destination charge is not negotiable. That's Honda's charge for each car. Typical you talked about the price including destination charge. $1,500 below the invoice depends on where you live. In So Cal, you can get $1,700 below the invoice. EX 4 Dr Auto $14,988 is including destination charge, we paid tax, lic and doc $45 on top of it. Total $16,450 out of the door.

    Kate:

How about jump on an plane to LA to purchase an new EX then drive it all the way home to Tx?

When I first went in to buy the Civic EX coupe, 5-speed, I threw out the ridculous number of $15,000 out the door because my boyfriend got his civic for around that price two years ago. But there were no takers for that price, or anywhere near it. Believe me, I tried my best to get it down - even brought my aunt with me to one dealer (and she's pretty good at negotiating and playing to the dealers' egos). After much internet research and much haggling, I finally narrowed it down to a range of 15,500 - 16,000 out the door (and I wouldn't settle for more). Final Price: $15888.88 (including floormats, first oil change and 10,000 mile tune-up). I think if you can get in that range OTD, you'll be in good shape - for the 5-speed at least. If you're looking for an automatic, somehow I feel that you can get a better deal (although I'm not positive on that). Either way, CA might be easier on the wallet, and you might want to try the end of the month on a weekday. I think I got lucky because the dealer called me back about a week later since he wanted to meet his quota. If anyone bought it for less, I'd love to hear your story.
