I'm interested in advice/experiences on this situation. Let me preface by saying I am the mom of 3 young kids with a husband stationed overseas w/ the Army. I have little support and am in the process of moving out of state:
My 3 kids, our dog, and I were on our way out of state to see our new house for the first time. The van was COMPLETELY loaded down w/ clothes, dishes, cleaning supplies, etc. About 40 mins down the road, while on cruise on the interstate, I hear a very loud clicking sound coming from the engine. The oil light comes on and about 30 secs later, as I'm trying to pull off the interstate, a loud "snap" and something flies loose under the van. All warning lights come on, engine stops. Luckily, we roll to the side of the interstate. Nothing would happen when I turned the key. Got towed and the mechanic says the engine is "baked". Oil had exploded all over and there was nothing to do but tow to the dealer. Ofcourse the next day we have a major snow storm (today) and no one can get to it till Monday. My BIL who is out of state and airplane mechanic says it sounds like I "threw a rod"???
As I said, we are in the process of moving out of state and are now stranded w/ no vehicle. My hubby is in Iraq and I don't know what to do. Can anyone give me some advice on what the problem may be/whether its covered under warrant/expected cost to fix it? My 04 Sedona has 58,000 miles on it. I know no one can diagnose a problem on line, but have you had a similar situation?
Just looking for advice since it's Saturday and I'm stranded, freaking out b/c I have no vehicle, no husband, 3 young kids, and am broke!
Hi Ally, ..so sorry to hear that happened to you. What a stressful situation! I haven't broken down in our van with my twins yet, but if I ever did, I'd be freaking out, too. But try to remember that since the van has bumper-to-bumper coverage to 60K (or 5 years), plus the 100K/10-yr powertrain warranty, you should be fine. It sounds like you'll be getting a new engine, I'd imagine. It's just one of those unfortunate things but at least none of you were involved in an accident when the engine blew. Hope your move goes o.k. and that you can be with your hubby soon! -Joan
Me. Just did it yesterday on my wife's '04 LX. I had to take the intake manifold off (remove air inlet hose for easier access; 2 bolts hold the injector wiring harness, 3 bolts/2 nuts in the front of the manifold, 5 bolts on the back of the manifold [easier to see from underneath], a couple of wiring hold-down brackets here and there). I'd suggest changing the wires at the same time - it's kind of time consuming. Good luck - let us know how it worked out.
I had to take the intake manifold off. Remove the air cleaner cover and hose for easier access. There are 2 bolts holding the injector wiring harness to the manifold, 3 bolts/2 nuts in the front of the manifold and 5 in the back (easier to see from underneath). There are a couple of wiring brackets and connectors that need to be disconnected to move the manifold out of the way. Change the wires at the same time - the whole thing takes a little while.
I have a 2002 Kia Sedona and I need to replace the power steering fluid. The manual requires PSF-III. I have been unable to locate this particular type or any other type that indicates that it is an appropriate substitute.
I need used fuel injectors for a 2002 Kia Sedona. I am having MUCH trouble finding these...I would like an entire rail of all 6. If anyone can help me out with this or with information on where to find it, I would GREATLY appreciate it!!! Thanks!
To change the back 3 plugs you need to separate the upper intake pluenum, and 2 rear support brackets from the intake. You do not need to completely separate the intake or fully take it apart (leave throttle body and cables attached and move it towards the front of the van. If you are careful you will not have to replace the gasket for the intake. The bolts for the 2 rear brackets are 12MM.if you get a mirror in behind you will see all the bolts.
i just purchased a 2005 same problem no remote and the buttons want work so you really need it i was wondering would a universal remote work???? :confuse:
My 2002 sedona just started the brake and batt light coming on. I also just had front brakes put on, but if you put a volt meter on the battery you will notice that the battery stop charging. I look at what it might take to replace the alternator. I ain't even going to try it, plus I'm not sure its the problem. Any answers? :confuse:
I have a Sedona '02. Looking for a pair of struts and seems unavailable after market. I have google and found nothing. Would you please advice me where to get them in reasonable price. Preferable online. May be a part number or something specific that can help me spot it. Do I need to get the strut mounts and dampers?
Another question, I have reading some discussion on struts vibration posted during early '07 in this forum. Is there a fix for that yet? The problem seems getting worse.
I have had my sedona for past 5 years and one day car wouldn't start. I took the car to local Kia dealer and they started diag. my car. After working on it for past week, they told me that they have put in about over $1000 of labor in the car. They starting telling me that it is do to using ARCO gas and caused the engine to clog. Well after further review they are now telling me that they do not know what is wrong with the car and they can not fix it. Has anyone had any problem like this? How can Kia not fix their own car? Now my insurance wants to come out to see if car needs to be totaled. If anyone had any experience  like this please help. Thanks
I have a 03 Sedona and do agree with you that the RA07 Hankook are CRAP! Had a blow out at 41,000, tires were rotated every 5000 miles, had plenty of tread left of them but the sidewall gave out. I ended up getting Michelin Weatherwise, found out the T rating is sufficient as the Gross weight of the van is still less than the T rating of each tire times 4. I only found Prielli to be the only H rated tire I could get, but was about $150 a piece. Never buy Hankook or Kumho, they are the same company, from what I heard. The Michelins gave me better MPG on the highway (25) and so far so good at 12,000 miles on them, still looking new.
Does anyone know if the 2005 has a timing belt, chain, or what? When we bought our van, the dealer told us that most likely it would need timing work around 70-75,000 miles. We are at 60,000 now and would like to know if anyone else had this work done around the 70,000 mile mark? Thanks, Laura
2005 Sedona has a timing belt!!!!! In fact we just had my sister-in-law`s Sedona done,at 56500 miles. A little early but a bit of insurance since she goes around the country with it.Read your owners manual,it states Calif. Sedones don`t have to get it done until 105,000 miles. This engine is a interference engine so if the belt goes so does your engine. It`s what ever chance your willing to take. :shades:
Just what makes the Sedona timing belt on vans sold in California last longer than a timing belt in the rest of the country?? You actually believe that there are 2 different types of timing belts? To me it is just a gimic. If it will last 105k in California, why won't it last that long in the rest of the country? JMHO Boxwrench
It may just be a minimum & maximum mileage. You just make a choice on how long
the belt will last. It`s all connected to the warranty. If it breaks, good by engine. If you have a 02 thru 05 Sedona, check your rear heater hose`s &pipes. They have a rust problem with the metal heater pipes.A fix is under warranty.(just look to the right of the spare tire) Had my sister-in-laws done under warranty. :confuse: (rust belt states the worst)
This is a know problem for the 2002 Sedonas. Sounds like you need to have your alternator replaced, but I'm surprised you have gotten this long with the orginial. Since there was a TSB bullentin concerning this you may be able to get the dealer to replace with no charge. Note that the new alternator has a bigger pulley which will require a new serpentine belt. If your interested, your dealer can access the below TSB or you can access it via www.kiatechinfo.com
Has anyone had to replace a starter on a Kia Sedona? My 02 Sedona currently has 69K miles and is needing a starter replacement. The starter still works but is drawing to much power from the battery when cranking. With the engine off the battery voltage is 12.75v and when you crank the engine the voltage goes down to 5v - 7v. Once the engine is running the battery voltage will go up to 14v which show that the alternator is working. I just thought that 69K miles was kind of premature for a starter to go out. If anyone has replaced their starter - did you do it yourself and was it hard to get to? I can't find any information on how to change out the starter.
Sounds like a battery going bad. Voltage drop should be just under 10 volts at the battery. You should have the battery & starter checked at your local auto parts store or auto repair shop.(how old is the battery)? Good luck.
My 2002 Sedona has 93000 miles and had the engine light come on with a code PO446. I have reset it but it continues to come on when the computer resets itself. The dealer did a smoke test and found no leaks. There was a service bulletin for a hose that connects to the emissions canister. They relplaced it and sent me on my happy way... until the light came on the next day.
I am in California and I know it is an emissions problem. The smog is due with my registration this month and we cannot find the problem. Any ideas?
Hi, I saw your comment about the rear heater lines rusting/rotting. My last estimate for work from the Kia dealer listed this on the recommendation section, that 3 sections (basically the whole rear lines) were rotted. I have a 2002 Sedona, that has 65k miles on it. The dealer said this was NOT covered under warranty. Where did you say the warranty for this was covered and was it based on mileage?? Also FYI for 02 Sedona- I had my 1st alternator replaced at 9500 miles, was covered under warr., then a 2nd at 65k miles for a total of $462. At 58k miles I had the timing belt, + serpentine belts replaced, they said they were badly cracked, for $585. I live in NH and the dealers here keep busy on these vans. Very expensive for maintenance/repairs.
Six years, 120K miles and it ends here today. Interior is trashed, fittings weren't as durable as in other cars we've had. A growing list of maintenance concerns had us looking, as we weren't interested in sinking money into the Kia after 100K miles. Two sets of tires beyond the OEM, two windshields (one rock, one dealer damaged), one power steering pump. Timing belt was done around 60K mi, didn't want to go there again as 120 rolled around. Wheel bearings and front brakes were in need of work, only one forward power point was still operational. Not sure what happened to the sunroof, kids killed the CD player.
Can't say the vehicle owed us anything, still got $1000 for it as a trade in, sure I could have done better in private sale but who needs the headache? Van made it down to Florida twice, Ohio four times, New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts and Virginia more times than I can count. We made a do it yourself move in 2006 and the van with all of it's seats stripped out was a big help, especially during the speed run when I moved my 55 gallon aquarium.
Van took plenty of body scuffing hits, parking lot type stuff but no major collisions. Can't say that there were any major mechanical issues besides the power steering pump (failure on the part of Wal Mart techs to put the oil drain plug in right is hardly Kia's fault.)
Kia still has the strongest warranty out there, but the price difference between their vehicles and the comparable Hondas and Toyotas is gone. I saved at least $10K between a Sedona and an Odyssey in 2003, the difference now between a Berego and a Pilot was less than $2000.
In general, we were satisfied with the Kia, it provided good basic transportation and was a great value. Of all the cars we've owned, it lasted the longest in mileage but it wasn't aging well. Although we went with a Honda Pilot as a replacement, we would consider Kia for our future vehicle needs.
I am curious as to where you got such a deal on the timing belt, tune-up (spark plugs), fuel injector service, trans flush, and serpentine belt done for $680 plus tax. The timing belt was $345 of that. I have shopped around a lot and can't even come close to that kind of pricing. I do live in Canada on Vancouver Island and it may be worth my while to take a trip to Seattle if I can get that kind of comparable deal. Please advise Thanks Gerold
Ok, so here it goes..... We have a 2005 Kia Sedona LX, all silver, no options. We bought it used in 2006 for $9k with only 26k miles on it. The van is ok, but definitely not the best. Over the 3 years of ownership, we have had to have the rear trunk handle replaced (under warranty) and had an issue with the power steering (a pipe to the power steering busted and spray power steering fluid everywhere), That was also covered under the extended warranty that we have, and we paid only $128 to have the pipe replaced and the power steering fluid replaced. Our MPG is roughly 14-18, and we expected a little more out if it. The van is underpowered for the weight of the van, as we have to have the RPM pretty high up to get onto expressway ramps. We have had a mysterious crack in the windshield that occurred overnight, that the dealership claimed was from a stone hitting it, but I do not think it was from a stone as the crack would not have suddenly occurred overnight and the crack is right at the passengers side windshield wiper. We are on our 3rd set of front tires, and 2nd set of front breaks, which is not bad, since we are on the 65k mile mark now. I do think that 3 sets of front tires is a bit much though. Our rear tires have never been replaced and have flat spots on them due to not being rotated, but we have winter tires on the front, and need them to stay up there. The van has a wierd knock in the front end when it starts up and the engine is cold, it sounds like a engine mount is loose, it may be an exhaust hanger too, as the sound followed to the rear driver's side, but I have no clue where the exhaust is located on this vehicle. We had a 1997 Pontiac Trans Sport before the Sedona, and our Trans Sport is dearly missed, but with a blown engine, we decided to get a newer van. We have 6 in our family, so we need all seats at all times, so grocery shopping is a little rough for us at the moment. We are looking into getting a luggage carrier for the top of the van. We want to get a railer hitch and a little trailer, but the wife says that she doesn't want me to do that, since turning on the van is really wide. Rear brakes make a wierd noise when coming to a stop or stopping at low speeds (its a humming noise and vibrates). They have made this noise since ownership and the pads on the back are still good. The plastic in this van seems to be very very cheap, as it marks up very easily. We have had the battery die on us 4 times, luckily not out anywhere, just at home in the driveway. The trunk needs to be slammed to be closed, which has me wondering why Kia did not use better materials on the trunk assembly. We are talking about trading our Kia in to get another van (something a little bigger and better quality) but the income situation is bad at the moment (not going into that story). We also have an issue with the paint coming off of the wheel covers, and do not know why it is doing it. Van is also starting to rust UNDER the paint right behind the grill on the hood. Makes us wonder how long until we need to go get a paint job done to this van. I do think Kia has become better quality wise ( look at the new kia soul, the forte, and the new optima) they are decent quality. I test drove a Borrego last year, and I could not believe the difference from the Sedona to the Borrego quality wise on the interior. It was like comparing a Lexus to a Saturn!!! Again, it is a ok minivan for the price, but it is not the van we thought it was going to be. :confuse:
I am having the same problem with no help from anybody. I was wondering if you new exactly what they did or if not do you have a contact name and number for the service tech that fixed your problem and I will call them myself.
Kia02 - I have had a similar problem with our 02 Sedona with hesistation but it would never stall and cut off. It seemed to be worse during VA winters which aren't very cold, but helped by installing new plugs, wires, fuel filter, and air filter. Also there is a TSB of KT2005022369 that I had the dealer apply to the computer and haven't have any problems since the tune up and computer re-program for ECM. The subject is Sedona ECM reprogramming (Engine -005) which applies for EN500-poor engine power/acceleration; EN2000- Idle irregularity; EN4000-Engine stalls. Some Sedona vans built prior to 11/19/01 may exhibit a hesitation on cold drive-away. Check the sticker in the door jam on the driver side to find the build date. Information can be found at www.kiatechinfo.com -Michael
I have 04 Sedona that has been producing a noise when the AC is running. It ranges from a moan/groan to motorcycle racing up from behind me. The noise seems to have been more persistent in recent days, now that the temps are up and we've been using the AC more often. I've seen other posts saying it is the air compressor expansion valve or a bracket that holds the compressor that is causing vibration. As my Sedona has 69,000 miles on it, the warranty has expired. So I need to know if this noise is an annoyance or a precursor to the AC unit failing. Simple solution is to turn off the AC and the noise goes away. But as we are planning a trip through central California, turning the AC off won't be much of an option. Any thought?
HI.. my a/c just went out. Spent $160. at first place, and it was blowing nothing but hot air. Next stop was $1000. and now the a/c works sometimes. It used to blow cold on setting number 2, and now I have to run it at setting #4 to get the same flow... it is so noisy we can't visit or hear radio. WE also had that motorcycle sound in the beginning and got that fixed under warranty. They knew exactly what we were talking about on that repair. Car has 117K miles on it now. Had much trouble with brake pedal pulsating. That took 3 times to get repaired and they claimed it was a $1200. part to repair it finally. Also, since the a/c repair, the car seems to not have any power when I put the gas pedal down. Don't know if it's connected or not. Car has to go back in to get the a/c issues resolved. OTHER than that, keeping the car is easier than buying another car. Good luck.
New to this forum, as I have just inherited an '02 w/109K from my brother. I haven't reviewed these pages to see if there is feedback on the several 'little' problems the van is experiencing, including the SRS warning light being on all the time.
What I need right now is upholstery and padding replacement for the driver's seat, which has the 8-way electric adjustment. Anybody out there got suggestions?
Mike - welcome to the forum. It was found in the earlier model Sedonas that the switch in the seat belt buckle was the culpret in triggering the SRS airbag light. Seems the passenger seat belt buckle is usually the prblem, but have the codes scanned to be sure. This was the case in my 02 Sedona.
As for the bumpy ride we've talked about in the earlier threads, after I replaced the struts and an alignment adjusted in Sears Auto the ride was still rough. Guess what, I redo the alignment at a local sharp where the mechanic took an hr and have it ride vibration free as smooth as my Honda Odyssey when new.
Does anyone know how the cylinders are numbered? Which plugwires are where?Where are the sparkplugs located, under the coil packs? I have a diagnostic readout that says #4 is misfiring. Where is number four? I've looked for a service manual for our 2005 kia sedona, and there doesn't seem to be any around!?
Hello, I have been having so much trouble with my A/C too Mine is also a 2004 Kia Sedona...I have taken my car in to the Dealership many times fior A/c problems but the latest has been that my car is not blowing cold air it's really hot I took it in in May and they told me there is nothing wrong with it....huh, well if there is nothing wrong why is it sooo damn hot?? I live in Florida it's been like 97 degrees outside..you can literrally not breathe in there...so I took it to another shop spend almost $400 and he told me it's the c- block??? He said it was replaced but as I started driving it it went right back to blowing hot Air....I also had a 2003 Kia Sedona which I Lemon lawed....because of A/C problems it sounded like an Airplane ready for take off.....no joke....I went to the dealership and they said they put some insulation around it it should be better now and I asked them why they cannot fix theproblem instead of covering it up.....I don't know what else to do.....???
The cylinders are usually numbered as any other v6 engines. However, you may locate the 4th firing pin on the distributor which is labeled and then trace the wire to the spark plug.
It sounds like leaking freon. If your car had been worked on some one might have undone the lines and didn't reinstall it properly. For example, to replace the alternator if not raising the engine, you would have to disconnect the ac lines to get to it. After replacing the alternator you would have to reconnect the ac lines and recharge the freon.
As for the noise, it could have been the fan, compressor bearing, belts, loosen mounting of something. Problem usually be able to spot by careful inspection under the hood.
I just got a Kia sedona LX 2003 and I have a problem with a nasty smell coming from the vents. It only last for a short time after the van started, but the smell is bad. Any one have the solution to this, please, let us know. Thanks.
I didn't experience with my Kia; may be it is because I bought mine brand new and make sure it didn't smell before picking it up. However, I did work on cars with bad small coming from the vent. Usually it is because small animal such as a mouse crowed into the vent and die during winter or kids stuffed or spelled food in there. It require to take the whole dash apart to get to it. I would suggest to leave it along and the smell will be gone sooner then you think hopefully. Good luck and hope this helps.
Has anyone else gone through new rotors every single year like we have with our 2005 Kia Sedona Van? I heard it has something to do with a problem that they then fixed by the time they made the 2006 vans?
Guess smells are difficult, and dependant on exactly how it smells. An awful odor for a few minutes could be an awful punjent odor, or an awful sour odor, etc..does it occur only when using the A/C or when the fan is on or off? Generally, what I've dealt with in the past is known in the A/C industry as "dirty sock syndrome", and it is a sickening sour odor, that lasts from a few minutes after the A/C is turned on to sometimes continuously. It can simply be treated by spraying the intake air to the A/C coils with a good quality sanitizer made specifically for this. Your Auto Supply store or certainly an Air Conditioning Supply house should have it for about $18- $24 a bottle. Household air sanitizers like Febreeze Airwick, or Lysol have not worked for me in the past.
I live in upstate NY and I own a 2004 Kia Sedona. Since I have had the car, I have had numerous problems related to the comments contained in this column. The car is currently being repaired for the fifth time this year - this time, it is leaking rear coolant lines being replaced. The problem has existed since it had approx. 50,000 miles on it. I am amazed that Kia Corp. has not recalled the cars to repair these leaking lines, as my mechanic has said they have already made several similar repairs in this area. Prior to this current problem, I experienced loud squealing noises from the engine area on our way to FL. I called the Kia dealers in Daytona and they informed me that they would have to replace the belt and the tension wheel. Since we had no other transportation, we decided to wait until we got back home & have the local garage fix it. We ended up replacing the idle arm and bracket & all belts to the tune of $600. In addition, the car has rusted thru the rocker panel & front hood, which we also had to have repaired at our cost. End point - we put well over $2,000 into this 2004 Kia this year. I sent a letter detailing all of this to our Kia dealer by certified mail, which was returned to me unopened. Any ideas on how I should proceed????
Hello, I also have a 2004 KIA SEDONA I have had many problems myself with the A/C it is not cooling the car and any time I took it to get fixed they told me that they couldn't find anything....which I can't remember how many times I have taken my car in for the same problem but they have no clue and of course now my warranty is out....It makes me so mad that I took it somewhere else and they told me they replaced the H-Block whatever that is but that also didn't fix my problem that was $400 later.... My first KIA I had to Lemonlaw :lemon: because there were so many problems....it is really ridiculous...Maybe try to send a letter to HeadQuarters hopefully they can help you that's who I contacted when I lemonlawed my first KIA :lemon: Good Luck...!!

Some Sedona vans built prior to 11/19/01 may exhibit a hesitation on cold drive-away. Check the sticker in the door jam on the driver side to find the build date. Information can be found at www.kiatechinfo.com

What I need right now is upholstery and padding replacement for the driver's seat, which has the 8-way electric adjustment. Anybody out there got suggestions?
Thanks.

As for your upholstrey repair, I would suggest to by a used seat such as this as an example:

As for the bumpy ride we've talked about in the earlier threads, after I replaced the struts and an alignment adjusted in Sears Auto the ride was still rough. Guess what, I redo the alignment at a local sharp where the mechanic took an hr and have it ride vibration free as smooth as my Honda Odyssey when new.
hope this helps,
Bruce
I have a diagnostic readout that says #4 is misfiring. Where is number four?
I've looked for a service manual for our 2005 kia sedona, and there doesn't seem to be any around!?
As for the noise, it could have been the fan, compressor bearing, belts, loosen mounting of something. Problem usually be able to spot by careful inspection under the hood.

Household air sanitizers like
Febreeze Airwick, or Lysol have not worked for me in the past.
Any ideas on how I should proceed????
I also have a 2004 KIA SEDONA
I have had many problems myself with the A/C
