Why do you fear me so much?
You know more about dealer costs and dealer invoices than even I do! All the tools that you need to get a "great deal" or a "true car cost" are at the click of a button. If you feel like you have been swindled or ripped of at a dealership ' well...shame on you. Since when has it become unethical and slimy and so wrong for me to make as much profit on you as I can? I am a 10 year veteran in the auto business. Currently work as the General manager of a Subaru dealer. I have a beautiful wife and a perfect 3 year old boy. I don't lie or cheat or steal or look to pull a fast one on you. Rather, I work 70 hours a week and dedicate a a large portion of my life to my beloved trade. A true skill that many lack and often are envious of. Chances are tremendous that you will be driving a new car today after I am done with you. Believe me, I will try to take every dollar out of your pocket and put it into mine where it belongs. You fear me so much that you will try to belittle me. I pray on your kind of personality. My skill level and sales ability are way out of your league. You guard has slowly gone down , and we are getting really comfortable with each other. There is no doubt in my ability to close the deal and close and it today and now. As your heart is pumping faster and faster and you are taking mental ownership of your next vehicle , now comes that dreaded negotiating time. But it's ok! This part is so easy and stress free. I have worked you through my process so smoothly and flawlessly that you would never raise the courage to second guess my offer. And here it comes.... Your palms are sweaty, heart racing, the ether is kicking in. "I can't believe we just bought a car! Thank you so much! This was such a great experience! You are a true professional! This is the high for me. The high I chase many times a day. You will have not regret this decision even though you could have gotten a much better deal. Sometimes I do feel a little remorse and maybe even very greedy at times but this does not make me a scum...or a hustler...and certainly not a thief or liar. It just makes me a master of my craft and and fills me with pride and satisfaction. You can't blame a man for wanting to provide the best for his son and wife. We are very similar in the end. You fight to get the best deal for your hard earned money and I Fight for mine. If you are closable I will close you. And chances are you will have paid top dollar for your new vehicle but you also received top dollar service. Be happy, enjoy your car, treat your sales person with genuine respect and chances are he will return the favor. Don't pre judge dealers and their staff. Do not waste their time .Give them a chance to do business if they built the value and sold you on their car. Don't be a jerk by telling them you are going to check other dealers prices......? So what if the other dealer offers you a better deal. You made the decision to walk into their place of business and it's their right to earn your business if they truly worked and deserved every penny. Trust me, some of these guys work their tails off 7 days a week so they can live the good life. We are not the scums and liars. We pay for our homes, families, cars etc... And last but not least don't ever belittle or disrespect me when you walk into my dealership. More than likely my W2 would make your eyes pop. Don't be mad if I really make a huge profit on you, instead be proud to have witnessed relentless,Value building, heart racing, palm sweating euphoric state I put you in. A wolf has a tremendous sense of smell. He can smell his pray and predict their next move. A wolf is handsome, serious , confident and proud. But he can also be a savage beast and guarantees to put you in your fetal position. So enough of me babbling , moral of the article is to respect the next sales guy you work with and respect his time just like you would like in return. And don't worry about me !! I only come out if you say NO to buying the car from one my sales guys. It's in your best interest for you to never meet me. I have been known to "getting your head spinning" while taking a big bite out of your checking/savings account.

Wolfie, I doubt if I would buy a car from you....I have walked out on less egotistical sales people. I know the value of my trade in and I know what I will pay for the new car, and I won't pay one penny more...even if you are the #1 salesman in the USA and talk like Count Dracula.
Now go over to Sales Frontlines and tell the guys your story:

Wolf, it's not that I fear you, I just don't want to work through you. I'd much rather deal direct with the manufacturer through a website and have my new vehicle delivered to my home, exactly as I ordered without the ridiculous and inevitable back-and-forth that occur in a dealership. Facilities like yours add unnecessary costs and hassle in my mind.
That's how it works. Yet the rest of your post demonstrates that you don't understand this.
Checking prices at other dealers isn't "being a jerk." It's part of trying for the best deal. It's completely honest and straightforward too, unlike the classic "I need to check with my manager."
That's a very odd idea of why someone should respect you. "I make a lot of money, therefor you should respect me" is a terribly insecure place to be.
Personally, I'm not terribly fond of wolves on either side of the table. Better for both sides that you come to a deal that you can both reasonably live with, where neither side gets skinned. Because both of you will be at the table again in a few years.
^^^ That. I like to think I don't belittle or disrespect anyone, but I've never asked to see a pay stub before I decide.

As a car buyer of many years and a professional of more years, the rant by Wolfie is curious on many levels.
First, clearly Wolfie never learned the art of the paragraph. A long extneded paragraph with many thoughts is not easily understood and not effective.
Second, experience has shown people who profess their successes, as they see them, are actually quite insecure. Our success is not judged by us but, rather, by those we encounter.
Third, it is obvious Wolfie does not sell to folks who are knowledgeable. I find it disturbing when a person considers preying on others a virtue.
Finally, I would think Subaru would not like its representatives to behave as described in Wolfie's rant.
An interesting insight into one way to sell cars. Personally, I'd rather deal with someone like Nissan salesperson Dave Siebenaller, whom Senior Editor Matt Jones profiled recently.

Trying to bite my tongue here but you sound like a typical car salesman.
The kind I tried so hard not to be and the kind the store where I worked tried hard not to hire.
Not sure what to say here. I think Wolfie is just venting over a few deals he couldn't close.

I agree. It's amazing to watch the dealer lobby's responses to Tesla. The arguments they throw up are really sad. It's obvious the only people who value the dealer network are the dealers, it's an antiquated model that needs to be retired.
People say they want to deal "direct" but those same people will squeal when they have to pay full MSRP.
Well, maybe not...yesterday I saw FOUR Teslas in my neighborhood. All different colors.
You never know. We all pay MSRP for stuff all the time. Most people pay MSRP or a posted "sale" price on big ticket items like furniture, applicances and jewelry. I still prefer having dealerships. I like to wander the lot, take test drives, look first-hand at the features, etc., and I still find value in having a GOOD salesperson who's invested in making sure I am purchasing what I really want. The profession could stand to lose some of the earned stereotypes, but a good salesperson adds value to my experience.

I agree with you Isell. Maybe for some tech saavy people with financing in place and no trade in, a dealerless network would work. But I doubt that a car on a manufacturer's site will have a "bargain now" button. It'll be a fixed price (less rebates), with no room to move.

In my final years, the bulk of my business came from repeat and referral customers so I must have done a few things right.
" You can sheer a sheep often but you can only skin one once"
I had a few repeat and referrals from my 3+ years at Honda but because I moved around a bit I lost touch with my previous clients. I get bored fast with same brands/products so I like change. The plus of moving around (and moving up) is that I gained a lot of valuable experience working with different size stores, different brands, and different positions (sales, marketing, assistant manager, lease, fleet, internet manager). Nowadays I value the low stress/good hours/good pay environment of a used car lot.

Wolves disappeared in California
Here too it would appear.
Must be off with the pack running down some sheep! Does he fear us? Hope not. We're really very nice here.
