Just wondering why it's necessary to login to read, not post on the Matrix and Vibe discussion boards. Is this an oversight?
  • johnclineiijohnclineii Member Posts: 2,287
Edmunds is a commerical company. They pay for this wonderful service by selling ads. Advertisers want to know how many people are at the site, how long they stay, etc.

I think it is FANTASTIC how many people read these boards and then end up buying the model being discussed.

I will probably fit that criteria soon. But instead of the Vibe/Matrix I THOUGHT I wanted, it will probably be a Mercury Marauder!

john cline ii who cross-shops the dangdest cars (in 1992 it was Nissan Maxima SE vs. Toyota Corolla LE. Honest! Probably should add I ended up cancelling a Prizm order back then and buying the Maxima SE. Somehow I think the Sales Manager at the Chevy dealer still tells that story!)

Would it kill Toyota to spend a few extra bucks on each vehicle or at least offer as an option, folding mirrors??? Most people who park in the city like to fold their mirrors on the street or when pulling into narrow driveways (have you seen some of the driveways in Queens?)

Anyway, I saw my first Matrix today at a dealer in Westbury, NY. The ground effects under the bumper was already dented and loose!!!!!!! Instead of putting useless nonsense like this on a car, how about folding mirrors instead!!!

The cargo area is very roomy and the seats are comfortable. I appreciated that the cargo area and most other vulnerable surfaces are plastic and vinyl. Some other cars like the Jetta and Outback Sport have cloth where there should be vinyl.

However the Matrix has some kind of electronic dash that you cannot see unless the key is in the ignition. What if this breaks? Then again, my Lebaron GTS had an LED dash and it never broke.

This is a nice car, but lose the fragile ground effects and give us heated folding mirrors instead!

Congrats! Let us know how you like it.

Going to see the Vibe Friday at the Toronto Auto Show.

To Leafguy- Congrats on your new Matrix! We look forward to hearing all about it.... ;-)

Hi jvkalra- (Post 499) Thanks for pointing that out. When discussions are created, they should automatically default to "read only" access for those that are not logged in. Occasionally the system has a hiccup, and the access list get's thrown off. Anyway, corrections have been made, and you should now be able to read the messages here when you're not logged in. Let me know if you have any other problems. Happy motoring!

The Matrix 16" wheels are 5 spoke with little divits at the tire end. The 17" are six spoke with no divit. Personally I kind of like that little divit on the 16".

Finally got to drive an XRS today, and it had the Nav system in it (exactly what I want). The NAV system takes a bit to get used to (not being a touch screen). I kept moving the cursor down when I was trying to press enter. I'll get used to it.

The hard part is colors and options. I'm VERY picky, and the dealer here is telling me I can't get the charcoal interior with Indigo Ink Pearl in this area (DC). I think this is total BS as they have an Indigo Ink Pearl one coming in with the stone interior and figure they just want me to get that....sigh.

Does anyone have dealer cost on the accessories? I know what the costs are on the options thanks to Edmunds, but I would like to know what they are on the add-ons.

For current US Matrix owners, did you all pay sticker? Did anyone pay under sticker? Did the dealer try to hit you with a "processing fee" that they seem to be charging these days (it's about $225 here, and I refuse to pay it on an MSRP car).

I priced it out, and my Matrix will be $22,259.00 MSRP. A similar Vibe is almost $2000 more. what the heck is GM thinking.

I'm shocked to see that the break in period is the exact same as my 1988 Toyota Supra (can you imagine being 18 and keeping a sports car under 55mph??? it killed me, but I did it). I'm wondering now how realistic that is. If I go 55mph on the DC beltway, I'll get killed. Any mechanics out there with an opinion?

Any US dealers out there that will actually let you "order" one, or did all of you buy off the lot?

Thanks for all the great info.

I managed to get find and buy an XRS, the only one available in Atlantic Canada! For those of you who don't know, us Canadian's live in igloo's and we get lots of snow - eh! So the 17" summer tires gota go for now :(
After talking to various tire stores, I figure the best and most cost effective tire/rim will be 195/65-15. Has anyone here had to put winter's on their Matrix yet? Also, What bolt pattern does the celica GT-S have (5-100 or 5-115?).
    Thanks.

I'm on the XR so I assume the 16" are all season. As far as this whole breaking in an engine is concerned please help us out here, I have the same concern as this is my first NEW car.

I'm with orangelebaron on the flimsy front ground effects on the Matrix...I was at the Chicago Show on monday and was able to scrutinize both the Vibe and Matrix pretty extensively. That is the only weakness I could see on the Matrix. On the plus side, the Vibe/Matrix have one of the most comfortable drivers seats of all the cars I sat in on monday (worst seat I tried was the Trailblazer drivers seat).
  • TupTup Member Posts: 200
The tires on the XR are all season Goodyear Eagle RSA's. They wouldn't be my first choice as they only have a treadlife of about 60,000KM's at best. They are also not the best on ice or snow. Having had recent icy roads here I can attest to the fact they don't have great traction in ice. On the other hand, our other vehicle is a AWD Subaru Forester with Ice radials (Michelin Artic Alpins) so that's not a fair comparison.

Deagled! My dealer told me that only one Atlantic Canada Toyota dealer ordered in an XRS in the initial order run....I guess you got that one! They were afraid the XRS would run closer to 30K not 24!.

As for breakin, my dealer told me it's not as important as it used to be as they bench run their engines now. Actually the Subaru dealer told me to ignore breakin periods and run the car hard so the engine seated itself in such a way as to provide good performance. He said if you baby them that they then not perform as well later on. I generally take it a little easy on cars for the first 1000KM or so. Opinions do vary though.

I heard that the dealer allotment for southern Ontario is 2 Matrices per month. Toronto should be better, but most of them are headed south of the border because the profit margin is higher in the U.S.
  • petlpetl Member Posts: 610
I don't understand what the big deal is. Why anyone would not follow the Manufacturers instructions with the break-in period is beyond my comprehension. Buying a new vehicle is, in most cases, the second most expensive purchase people will make. Unless you don't plan on keeping the vehicle for a long time why would you risk not "breaking it in" properly? Incidentally, that would be the day that I listen to a salesperson or anyone at the dealership telling me not to follow the Manufacturers instructions with the break-in period (aren't they in the business of selling and repairing cars?). Heck, let's not change the oil at the recommended intervals as well. These are the first people complaining about poor gas mileage, burning oil or premature breakdowns. Once the break-in period has expired (2-3 weeks) then drive the you-know-what out of it. "Short term pain for long term gain."

My wife and I test-drove a FWD Matrix last night. Extremely impressed. The one word we came up with to describe the vehicle is "solid". If we can find a buyer for her 1998 RAV we may purchase a 4WD XR. Not an easy decision, her loaded RAV is in excellent shape (including new tires) and only has 64,000kms on it.

Drove from LA to Laguna Beach, to Palm springs. 32.3 mpg . . .I was amazed. A/C on the entire time. Varied speed between 60 and an occasional 80. Only negative is that the 180 hp version of this 1.8 liter calls for premium unleaded. One other item: Not one single thing not working correctly on this vehicle. Not a rattle nor a squeak/creak. I'll continue with mileage checks for a bit. Pete
  • deagleddeagled Member Posts: 20
Indeed it is the only one in Atlantic Canada... for now. I bet you'll see them everywhere within a year. Just like the Civic Si.

About the "flimsy front ground effects"...
I would like to say they are no more flimsy than most aftermarket parts, which are usually fiberglass and don't fair so well in our climate. The matrix has poly-urethane cladding which make it more durable/flexible and less likely to crack, as oppose to fiberglass.

Also, I should note that the Matrix is only 265lbs heavier than a GT-S with the same engine and 6-speed manual. This makes it an amazing value, considering you also get practical cargo space WHEN YOU NEED IT, and good looks. It's not like you'll always be driving around town with all seats and the trunk full.
  • TupTup Member Posts: 200
Tell me, is there actually a "Back up" beep that happens when you shift into reverse? Our Matrix doesn't do that!

BTW, just got our windows tinted on our Black Matrix (20%...not mafia glass) and I think it looks terrific.
  • deagleddeagled Member Posts: 20
There is a beep when in reverse, but it's only on the inside. It's not like a big tractor-trailer or anything.

I bet the tint looks slick! Especially on the black. I am not a fan of tint on most cars because thieves just think you have something to hide. But with 20% you should have no problems.
  • PeterunPeterun Member Posts: 83
Curious to know about mileage other Matrix owners are getting. What is the XR (130hp) version getting? I'm wondering if my XRS mileage is so high because I'm trying to keep the rpm's below 4500 for now. Pete
  • tallzagtallzag Member Posts: 3
Drove an XRS 6 speed today, sweet. Really liked it. Didn't drive it hard (not going to drive a car hard with 200 miles on it when somebody else is going to buy the car), but was fun. Revs up fast, and yes it beeps in reverse (kind of weird). Pretty sweet, wanted MSRP + 2k, am sure you could have gotten MSRP on it, BTW I am in Spokane and it was at Appleway Toyota, sweet car!

Went to local Toyota dealer, Butler, in Indianapolis. Salesmen asked if I needed help, so I told him I wanted to look at the Matrix and
New Corolla, he just walked by and said I only have one(matrix) and It's sold we're cleaning it and I have one Corolla and walked on. This guy was so unhelpful. He could have offered to at least walk me around back and show me the Matrix or atleast try to sell me the Corolla he did have. What a loser this guy is. I am looking to replace
my 95 civic and based on my impressions at Butler Toyota, I will not buy it there.

Kind of funny, especially since one of the first cars to do this was the 1964.5 Mustang! :)

This has been going on almost since you were born or whatever that 1964 means! :)

I have decided to buy the XRS and I wanted to know other people's experiences. I am willing to wait until I find the color and options that I want but I'm finding that some dealers want me to buy the car before it even arrives on the lot. I'm uncomfortable with this. Anyone else run into this? What kind of prices are people paying? MSRP or higher?
  • scott31scott31 Member Posts: 292
Dealers in the DC area are asking MSRP. In my case, I want a specific color combo, and options, so I'll have to "order" mine. and they all want a deposit, which is fine. The $$$ on deposits that I've been hearing are $500-$1000. I'm finalizing pricing on mine now, and should be placing an order sometime in the next few days.
  • just_some_guyjust_some_guy Member Posts: 52
I noticed that kelley's www.kbb.com had some of the accesories but not all. Also Kelley's is listing alot of the gulf states stuff that is basically aftermarket so you have to look close at what you're pricing. I've had one dealer in southeast offer me MSRP - 1000 (yes minus not plus). Thanks for the info on the nav screen.

This is my first-ever post; but excited about having my name on next Matrix XR 5 spd. in Indigo Ink that local dealer gets, s/b here in 3 weeks as is built already. Drove XRS and Base model, XRS engine sweet but not very practical for daily around town use IMHO. Power band at high end and torque nearly identical. I need as daily driver/dog hauler and wife has Solara coupe for the road. If you were buying into the hype that the Matrix is targeting younger buyers; I am backing out of a 4Runner lease and am 57 yrs. old. Need quality, reasonable price and operating yet fun to drive. I think the XR will do it. I've had lots of vehicles over time; but sometimes you just get hooked. Matrix did that to me when I first saw it just last Sat. I think Toyota will sell a ton of them - price is right, being built beside the Corolla (quality reputation) in Ontario, look great, well-equiped in base model, and very versatile seating/carrying inside. Has to be a winner!!

Anyone know what the 16" Alloy Wheels looks like? I am wondering if it is the same as shown in the Matrix brochure. In South Florida, the 17" are Enkei wheel and are not the one shown in the Matrix brochure.

    Thanks

Does anyone know if you can get the moonroof option with the XRS? I know you can't get the 17 inch tires and the moonroof for whatever reason. Every XRS I see has 17 inch tire option and no moonroof.
  • smochestersmochester Member Posts: 7
    Southpaw1,

Yes, you can get a moonroof with the XRS. I am thinking about ordering mine with it. That is the problem though, to order it will take 3-5 months.
  • nymerianymeria Member Posts: 11
I don't know if it's true that the reason the 17" wheels and moonroof won't be sold together is because each one raises the car's center of gravity, but that's the only explanation I've seen. Neither seems like it would have a huge impact...which makes me wonder why this car is so sensitive. Other cars are sold with large wheels and moonroofs. I hope this isn't a serious issue but I'm a little concerned. Does anyone else has an opinion? I'm planning on test driving both the Matrix and Vibe soon and love what I've seen about these cars. Thanks!

p.s. I haven't seen one on the road yet!!!! If anyone in Toronto travels between Ajax and the DVP, you'll know it's me as I drive that streak of the 401 every day!!! I have personalized plates too!!! XXXXX M, we'll see if anyone spots me. I'll buy the first one who does a cyber beer or two.

p.s. Canada vs. Sweden 6pm GO CANADA GO.
Thank you for the senseless hockey plug.....lol
  • rblelandrbleland Member Posts: 312
Way to go! It is just as I have coming - see post #524. The Indigo color is super. Enjoy but we won't see each other as I am in B.C.
  • vocusvocus Member Posts: 7,777
Makes no sense not to offer the 17-inch wheels with the moonroof either. I saw that when playing around on CarsDirect.com and configuring a Matrix. I have a VW Jetta right now that has 17-inch wheels and tires (of course, it's lower than the Matrix, but not by much) and a moonroof. Weird.
  • herzogtum71herzogtum71 Member Posts: 470
I saw an ad from Acton (Massachusetts) Toyota in yesterday's paper that AWD Matrices start at something under $18,000. I want A/C and cruise control. I don't care much about other options. How many more thousands will I have to spend on option packages in order to get an AWD with the two options I really want? Would the Vibe be a better price even if GM dealers aren't inclined to dicker on price for a while?
  • jas28jas28 Member Posts: 50
That's the way Toyota engineers are...that's also why Toyota's are more bullet proff than their North American and European comptitors. If they don't get that warm fuzzy, they don't think it's worth it.
  • smochestersmochester Member Posts: 7
The reason for no 17" wheels with the moonroof is due to a weight issue when shipping the cars. At least that is what I was told via a Toyota Motor Sales employee.

I plan on getting it with 16" and a moonroof, then purchasing aftermarket 17" for the summer, and put winter tires on the 16". Also, you will notice that the 16" tires come with 205/55/16 tires. When you plus size these you should get 215/45/17. The dealer installed 17" tires are wearing 215/50/17. This will throw off you speedo, plus change your final drive ratio. No wonder people are complaining about the performance with the 17's. They have a taller tire than needed on them.
  • seminole_kevseminole_kev Member Posts: 1,696
the diameter of a 205/55 R16 tire and a 215/50 R17 tire would on be .6" by my thinking. So the ride hight would only be .3 inches higher correct?

Now I can see it effecting acceleration because of the heavier weight of the wheels, but I don't think it would be a safety issue with it riding a 1/3 inch higher.
  • mpgmanmpgman Member Posts: 723
Or does the Matrix with the sports package look like one of those pre-release cars headed to an auto show with all of the decoy stuff on it?
  • smochestersmochester Member Posts: 7
Being 1/3 higher has nothing to do with safety. How bad will it effect acceleration, that is another question.
  • seminole_kevseminole_kev Member Posts: 1,696
to be a trade off between handling and acceleration with the two different tires. Just think it's one of those stupid marketing decisions like when some makers make you get a sunroof so you can get ABS, or something to that effect.
  • stragerstrager Member Posts: 308
I know this is a matter of personal choice, but to me the Matrix looks cleaner and more stylish without the "optional" skirts and spoilers on the XR and XRS.

IMHO, the skirts and spoilers may appeal more to Toyota's typical customer (45+), rather than the intended target customer (20s and 30s). Toyota should make these add-ons optional, in the true sense of that word.
  • nymerianymeria Member Posts: 11
I agree - the Matrix doesn't need all those skirts and spoilers. The base model has a nice clean look in the pictures. On the other hand, I had a chance last weekend to see a Matrix with all the ground effects up close and it was very handsome. I'd love to see one without them.

It is a shame if Toyota isn't really allowing them to be optional. That alone could tip the scales to the Vibe for me, especially since I happen to like the Vibe's appearance better anyway (if one can judge from the pictures).
  • semanticssemantics Member Posts: 51
For some odd reason, whether it be weight or pricing, or burrs in their butts, the EPA restricts the production of the Matrix to one or the other in XRS: you get the 17" alloys or you can have a sunroof, but not both. FYI.
  • tomsrtomsr Member Posts: 325
I took a test drive in the XRS and it was a blast
but in congested traffic it cannot be enjoyed.
The lack of low end torque makes it easy to kill
the engine but I would adjust to that. The sticker price was $19.5K which is a bargain when compared
to the inflated CRV prices. The sad thing is the salesmen lie.He said things like you cannot order one and moonroof is not an option.Ignorance I can
understand but deception I cannot.I have always said a good car does not need a salesman.
  • smartguy8514smartguy8514 Member Posts: 15
i saw a matrix today with the 16 inchers and i really dont see a big difference in the look from the 17's
  • PeterunPeterun Member Posts: 83
All's good, as you know, but have discovered one disconcerting item which I cannot demonstrate: Two separate occasions, the Matrix would not start. Yes, I had pressed the clutch all the way to the floor. I would turn the starter . . . .the lights would shut off, and NOTHING! No cranking, no turn over. Finally, after a minute of this, the car started. This occured twice. What's that about? HELP!
  • leafguy2727leafguy2727 Member Posts: 83
Why I got my XR today and almost starting crying tonight. I went to a friends house and drove home on the highway with the emergency brake on................ my god!!!!!!!!! Thank god it wasn't fully cranked but enough that when I got home a realized what had happened there was smoke coming from the rear drums and a burning smell. I can't believe how stupid I am!!!! and how small the E-brake light is and how it blends in with the dash!!!! Please help, is this that bad?
  • subzero206subzero206 Member Posts: 111
u must not go out a lot if you think the body kit will appeal more to the 40+ crowd. look at all the civics/integras and accords out there that are "suped" up almost always it is a teen/young adult driver. Toyota is aiming for the younger audience with the Matrix, they said it themselves. which is why they included the big rims and body kit and 6-speed tranny. for those of you who complain that the skirts make the car too low and easy to curb, u should be looking at the Rav4 or 4Runner instead. The intended young crowd (not all but the majority) likes/wants the body kit (OEM kit looks great and is priced right, when u look at aftermarket kits for say a Honda they are at least $500 and unpainted), big rims (ill be getting 18's), and lowered stance (i wish it was lower). only thing left is for TRD to make a supercharger for it.

I got my black automatic XR 3 days ago.. Very nice car. Bigger and taller than the picture. Exciting interior. Good price too. I paid $24,300 cnd after grad rebate. Wanted to try 4wd but the dealer said they won't be here until next month. And I don't want to wait. I am looking to install remote start and the anti-theft. Has anyone try it or heard of problems when installing those things ? The model is so new that I want to wait a little later..

You aren't the first person to drive around with that on. I'm sure my mother and wife have driven around all day with the parking brake on, much to the chagrin of my father and myself but so far, it seems no brake repairs have been directly related to this activity. "Dear, the car seems sluggish today" "You didn't leave the parking brake on agan did you?" "Um, maybe..."

Luckily for you with the XR model, the parking brake is just on the rear drum brakes. Cars with rear disc brakes use a special small drum brake that is not as heavy-duty as full drum brakes. I don't think you can warp the drums like you can do to rotors but I could be wrong. I'd see how well it stops, how well the parking brake holds the vehicle (while stopped in neutral) and if there are any funny sounds, especially while backing up. If you're worried about it, take the car in and have them do a brake inspection -- most shops will do this for free. At worst, machining the drums and putting new pads on shouldn't set you back much more than $350 CND with tax (my '95 needed that last year, just due to normal wear).

I'm glad our new Saturn last year has an annoying "bong-bong" seatbelt like warning for when you've left it in park as it is an auto (I'm used to stick-shift) and when shifting out of park I occasionally forgot to take the parking brake off on the first occasion or two.
