There's no if about it. The people who make minimum wage couldn't organize a three-car funeral, but the unions had multiple demonstrations in favor of the $15 minimum wage.

Quite a few people I work with lost power due to the storm yesterday.
One of my friends at work is one of those, so I'm lending him my generator.
It's a 2k watt model, so enough to run the fridge.
I have a heavy duty extension cord, about 3/8 of an inch thick, but not sure if it's needed or even efficient.
Any electrical guru's here that can provide some advice? Thanks.

Practically speaking a 2K generator producing 115 VAC is good for just under 20 Amps. So, I would not use an extension cord rated for less than 20 Amps, IF, you want to use the full capacity of the generator. That means the copper wire must be No. 12 gauge minimum (12 gauge copper is rated for a maximum of 20 Amps) AND, the cord length should not be more than 50 feet.

You cannot go by the outside diameter of the cord. Wire gauge size is the way you have to go. But, I doubt that a 3 wire cord measuring 3/8 inch OD is sufficient for 20 Amps.

Now, if all you want to run is the fridge, a cord rated for 10 Amps should be OK. This is probably your 3/8 in. OD cord (with around No. 16 gauge copper wire). A simple way to tell if the cord is overloaded is to feel it at the end of the cord very close to where the appliance is plugged in. If it is warm, you need a cord with more current carrying capacity.

    No charge for this info.

We lost power for about 2 hours. The worst outage was 30 years ago when we had a freak snow storm on Oct 4th. It was off for the better part of a day.

I have a little generator sitting in the barn that has never been used.

I am told you should add stabil to the gas and let it run once a year....and burn the gas and add new gas+Stabil again. If you leave it longer and without Stabil it won't work when you need it.

Well, I read the ad. He might think he knows what it is worth, in that condition, but I doubt it is $3,500.

but based on the pictures, there is enough space behind the seat to recline a little bit.

Needs a stick shift though. Or a Hemi! Wonder if you could jam one in? Maybe a nice turbo set-up instead.

$3,500? $500? Ummmm....interesting. But, looks wrecked. I’d give him/her $200 if he ships it to me.

When our house was built the utility had to run a line from the closest substation directly to our home. As long as that line remains intact we get power back as soon as that substation is up.

You wouldn't believe some of the ads I see on CL. Yesterday I saw one on Tampa CL that was full of angry profanity and calling his car a pos. Said he didn't care if you bought it or not. Almost dared you to show up and look at it. I'd repost it but I'm sure the Edmunds censors would boot it.

BTW, here's a Rampage that looks in better shape. Too pricey for me.

Sadly, that was only a few years ago. :'(

The thing that really drives me up a wall is when farmers complain. You guys get low cost interest loans, tax breaks, big breaks on the purchase of farm equipment. Even more beneficial you get subsidies to not plant certain crops and the list goes on and on. In your case, you probably got a bonus for planting pretty flowers and then claiming a loss when you sold them at the farmers market.

No wonder you drove a school bus part time. You would have felt guilty beyond belief doing farming work full time making a killing at the tax payers expense, huh? ;)

    Ram 1500 update/review

I have had my truck for 6 months now, and really am pleased with it. Ride with rear coil springs instead of leaf springs is plush, and the cabin is very comfortable. Ergonomics are really good, the combination of a big touch screen along with real buttons and knobs for key music and climate controls works well. I have picked up several loads, made multiple dump runs and pulled a 2 horse trailer full of hay with no problems. Hay and trailer were ~ 4,000 pounds. First time I have had/used an integrated trailer brake, and once adjusted was very cool.

There is a smaller screen between the tachometer and speedometer which is customizable and displays relevant info. The automatic climate control and wipers are perfect, and this morning at 37 degrees the seat heater and steering wheel heater came on automatically.

That'd be roughly 5K/year, a long time before I was born. You could buy decent enough houses for ~10-15K then, too. Now the wage might be 70K, but the house costs 800K. Progress.

Gee, I must have missed the memo on all those bennies. I'm still waiting for penny one.

90% of those payments to "not grow anything" go to huge multinational farm conglomerates. They're the ones who donate to the crooked politicians. Little family farms get the shaft. I think I've told the story of how I wanted to set a card table in front of the house to sell tomatoes and the town made me meet the same requirements as the 100,000 sq. ft. supermarket which was applying at the same time.

Crop insurance can cover about 30% of your losses. How many years did your company come to you at the end of the year and say " hey, mr. Monroe the weather was bad so even though you worked all year we're only going to give you 30% of your pay"?

Tell you what, write me a big check and you can take over the place and reap all that free money. ( I'd stick a smiling emotorcon in here but the site is glitching again and they aren't available)

I wish you had come in here with that story about your run in with the town folks about the card table. I would have suggested backing up one of your hoopties in front of your castle and sold the tomatoes out of the trunk. No table needed if you did that.

BTW, my check is in the mail. This site has ESP and does not allow an Emotorcon when the story is true. So tell me, should I plant pretty flowers or tomatoes when I take possession. Either way I'm going to sell them out of the trunk of my Genny. :p

You are certainly putting yours to better use than I am mine. So far, I've used the bed 4 times in 4 months, and have yet to tow anything. Max payload of those 4 trips was about 500 lbs. Did that twice in one weekend picking up 2 identical loft beds for the kids.

LOL - my soon to be brother in law bought an F-150 about the same time, he has dropped ~$10K is goodies, including wheels and tires, a big lift kit, full cat-back exhaust system and more. I have spent $100 on a seat cover for the dog, a tail gate assist and additional tie downs for the bd. I will buy better tires after the new year, and maybe $150 on a Borla muffler that does sound cool.

It is handy to have a truck when you need though, that is for sure.

I would butch mine out if it weren't a lease. I only bought 1 accessory: a rubber cover for the bed floor. I think it was $75 used from Amazon. I got it AFTER I put my first scratch in the bed. Hope their damage policy for trucks is reasonable.

Meanwhile up here, some things never change. I had mentioned that my cheapskate older brother dumped his rusty Ford Ranger and splurged on a CPO 2016 Patriot. He figured the tires had about half their tread remaining so decided to get a set of snows for winter. I made the mistake of asking him what he bought. "Oh, the cheapest Chinese ones the tire place had. Can't even remember the name." Jeebus, he's loaded and still keeps doing this.

From time to time I consider myself a world-class dick, based on what I see and hear in my day-to-day world.

It's nice to see that I have a way to go yet.

Not mentioning any names, of course.

@qbrozen - you mentioned there is a speed governor on your truck.  What is it?  100 mph?  Do they set that due to the lack of stability or aerodynamics?

My best friend recently leased a Sierra Denali with the 6.2L engine.  He LOVES it.  One thing he's noticed (other than the automatic brights only work when they want) is that the speed limiter is set at 97 mph.

I have read it is 105, but it firmly cut out at 103 for me. Of course, speedo could easily be off by that much at that speed.

Why? I'm sure they'd say it is a truck, blah, blah, blah. But, hell, the Trailcat weighs even more and yet that doesn't have that limiter. I have had my wife's minivan up to 115 fully loaded down. There is no shortage of trucks and SUVs that don't have such a low limiter.

hmm...I wonder if mine has a limiter? Maybe next time I am out in the sticks.

FWIW, my son is on the spectrum as well, in a self contained classroom but has lots of interactions with the gen-ed kids. And to bring this back around he loves the riding in the truck!

My truck cuts out somewhere around 3 digits.
I let one of my BIL's drive it and I knew he would max it out, so I waited until it was fully broken in.
Pretty sure it bleeds off boost once you reach it's speed limit.
He noted the rpm's kept going up, but we weren't going any faster.

Some people will research a product before they buy it....but, their main criterion is price. They think cheap is the best, and they think they have made a wise purchase because they bought the cheapest product on the market. Sometimes you pay more and you get a lot more. Sometimes paying more means you will pay less in the long run.

My brother does the same...looks at cameras, buys a disposable one claiming he loses them anyway. Buys a car, looks at Civics which is what he had, and gets an Accent because it was cheaper. No remote doors, and he needs cushions to make the seats high enough. Won't take it on the highway because it is so light and flimsy. I would rather pay more and feel good about what I drive...personally.

Man, do you really want to put this group through all of that? It would put @driver100 to sleep by 10 o'clock in the morning. You know it would be well over 500 words once I explained Ohms Theory, explained how to calculate wire circular square mill area, explained conductor temperature rise, gave a few examples, etc. etc.

But let me give this a quick try. The longer the extension cord the larger the wire diameter has to be to provide a sufficient amount of power that is required by the load (appliance), without having a large "voltage drop" across the cord itself due to it being inadequately sized. By not having enough voltage left to be delivered to the appliance, it WILL burn up. Remember the wire gauge thingy? It's all about that.

Gee, I think I just did it without putting anyone to sleep. I guess I still got the touch. ;)

True enough about the voltage drop and burning up motors. Earlier this year I was shopping for a new electric lawnmower. I saw one I liked that had a 13 amp motor. Odd as most are 10 or 12 amps. The specs said if you were running an extension cord longer than 25 feet it needed to be 12 gauge wire. I need about a 60 ft cord and that in 12ga would have been heavy, bulky and very expensive. I passed.

I wonder how he found that out? Did he try to break a hundred? A remember reading that the 3.7L Mustang was limited to about 105. Can't remember about the 5.0 but if it is the limit is over 150. Can't imagine going that fast on the street. At 80 I get so paranoid about getting a ticket I have to slow down.
