I think it's been at least a year since went into Seattle and didn't venure off I5. Just not much there that I can't get here.

Seattle transit looks OK until you get out of the city proper or compare it to Vancouver (or sometimes even Portland), then it looks a generation behind - which it is.

I HATE driving into Seattle and trips are few and far between for that reason. I will say Seattle has a great in inexpensive bus system that works fine for us! Bellevue is bad enough now!

Instead of meeting 2 adult children and granchildren in Victoria BC we are meeting in downtown Seattle for a change....we are staying right downtown. I want to see them throw the fish in the market.

JM, at that pace, and with the Hyundai warranty, just keep it for the 10 years and see if you even care at that point!

I'm thinking the same thing because Mrs. j has told me several times I'm not allowed to get another car because I don't drive the one I have. My only hope to see another car in our garage is if she gets tired of her 2012 Legacy that will turn 31K miles the next time it comes out of the garage. Only problem there is, she is not a car gal and likes driving what she has. Her car philosophy is, as long as it starts and goes she's more than satisfied. I've gotta come up with a plan of some kind. :'(

I'd imagine RFID tech could do a lot of that already, not sure about the cancel part though. Something will have to evolve past self-service scanners, as many people don't want to use them and probably just as many others simply can't figure them out.

I heard a joke, something along the lines of "WalMart has just reported it is closing 1800 stores. 28 cashiers will be out of a job" ;)

At least the Amazon model is placing those people in other roles, at least for now. There's a huge issue on the horizon regarding employment.

    I agree.

I told my wife, about a year ago, that eventually you will just go to a store and walk out with your purchases. You would have everything taken out of an account or billed; whichever way you have it set up. She said I was nuts. That is probably true, but it's coming.

It's interesting that they use cameras to watch everything. My fantasy was that a scanner would scan you as you left the store and be able to pick up a chip on everything you have. It would be able to cancel that chip so if you went back into the store with those items it wouldn't be able to scan them again thereby not charging you twice.

Gee, even I can figure those out and as technophobic as they come. I just bought a Trac Phone for work in case of breakdowns and it took me all afternoon to teach myself how to text. The Garmin GPS fought me too.

I don't think minimum wage has anything to do with it. We'd be flying towards automation if minimum wage was $1/hour. The issue is the rate of population growth eclipsing the growth rate for decent wage jobs. UBI might end up being a real issue soon.

IMNSHO, minimum wage should be at least what it was, adjusted for a basic CPI, when the luckyboomers were getting started 50 years ago. Today, it lags significantly.

I imagined you would have a rotary dial mobile phone B) Texting on a flip phone can be quite time consuming, but if you have a smartphone, the learning curve should be pretty easy.

I;m a big user of self-checkout lanes, as I seldom have an order of more than $25 or so, and I want to get it over with.

Man, am I sorry I read your post. I'll bet my full size wannabe ain't doing too good either. I guess if you don't have a crossover today you're stuck.

FWIW, even though it's Winter and I try to leave the Genny in the garage, since it wasn't a bad day today here in the Burgh, I decided to take it to watch Grandson #3 play hockey. As I'm driving down the PA Pike a few exits, I just happened to glance at the odometer as it turned 6666 miles. It will be 3 years old come June and has never seen a snowflake or a grain of salt. I hope those pluses save me a little. :(

It's $8,970. Kelley Blue Book for a perfect, low miles car is about $4,000. Private party $3,100. Trade-in $1,700.

How does that help....higher pay = fewer jobs and more technology to do the work. Minimum wage jobs are just filler jobs until you get something better. Few people stay in a minimum wage job unless it is for extra household cash.

I will agree with Fin...tie it to the cost of living, that is fair. A lot of jobs aren't worth $15 an hour and some companies can't pay that amount. At least minimum wage jobs give people a chance to get started and prove themselves....oh, that is not an acceptable concept any more.....everyone should start off with a fairly high hourly wage or let the company go bust.

When i started the business we always started people off at $10 an hour....minimum was $9. We moved people up quickly if they were good. I couldn't have paid much more than that in the beginning....things were tight, as the business grew we were happy to increase pay.

Driver, if you carry the washer fluid in the tank where it belongs, no sloshing noise. Check it once a month and you shouldn't need to be carrying a jug of it around.

actually, one other drawback to a hatch. In the winter, you can't keep your frozen food in the nice cold trunk to keep it from thawing on the way home from the store!

I am fine with driving a sedan, but I also love wagons/hatches (and will always have one of them in some form in the family). I really like the hatches that look like sedans (like my old 626 5 door, or the new Audi sportback A5 or BMW 3 series GT).

My old office used to be right by Pike Place Market. It actually isn’t as bad driving downtown as you might expect.  At least not relative to other places I’ve lived. Friday and Saturday during Cruise season is not great but beyond that it’s OK.

Actually, stick has a great idea....as usual.
My experience has been I seldom look under the hood unless there is a real reason, and so, I usually run out of washer fluid while on the road...when I really need it.

When I buy a Costco or Sam's barbeque chicken it is better to keep it in the trunk where I can't smell it and then I get hungry, and need to stop for food. In an SUV all the smells are in the car.

How am I doing JM....did I find enough reasons to prefer a trunk?

Yes, out of 5. To put that in some context, an example with 197k miles scored a half point higher. So it definitely gives me pause. I wonder if it had some unreported damage they have fixed. In amy case, they did overpay, I agree. My gut tells me $6500, if as nice as represented, would be OK.

I do wonder how the driver used up 20% of the tires in 7k miles. That means they'd be done for before 30k. Was grandpa a retired racecar driver?

A big issue is that the city allowed it to be built at one of the most busy intersections in town, with little parking and not much room for drive-thru backups. Poor planning to the point where one has to wonder if there were greased palms.

This otta be good. You know he's going to try to convince you you're wrong.

    Let the fun begin.

I knew you'd try but if that is all you can come up with, it's not enough to talk a SUV or CUV person out of buying what they want.

    Poor try.

I know sedans are out of favor but I don't want to drive an SUV or crossover....a vehicle without a trunk. I like the dynamics of a car.....the feel of a car, the lower center of gravity of a car, no windshield washer fluid sloshing around sounds. Generally, I like the look of a car more too.

What SUV have you driven that has “sloshing around sounds”. I prefer cars too, but both of our Enclaves have been like a bank vault on wheels.

    As is our Buick Encore.

@nyccarguy, I give you and other hockey parents a lot of credit. I've seen it with both of my Sons. I guess if my Sons played hockey I would have done it too (it wasn't popular back then like it is today), but man, that's a lot of running around. Everything my Sons do seems to be scheduled around hockey. Not like going to the local fields for baseball and football games when they were kids.

Maybe that's an issue, I seem to mostly make it over in the summer. Still too much of a hassle though, especially when WB 90 backs up.

Regarding bicycles, Seattle is into it, but maybe no more than other progressive cities. There's not nearly the bicycle usage and infrastructure here as in Europe, but drivers are better there, too - riding a bike in the city here is Russian roulette. Funny thing, I've noticed more bike rental/bike sharing bikes popping up Not connected to the failed crony capitalist bike sharing program Seattle got into a couple years ago, and a slap on the wrist of course because "life isn't fair" or some other detached babble from the untouchable class - I saw a couple rental bikes marooned out on Evergreen Point a couple weeks ago. I suspect they were planted there for exposure - I can't imagine residents of that tony enclave using a brightly colored heavy rental bike.

My old office used to be right by Pike Place Market. It actually isn’t as bad driving downtown as you might expect.  At least not relative to other places I’ve lived. Friday and Saturday during Cruise season is not great but beyond that it’s OK.

    @driver100,
I'm getting to experience euro sedan like depreciation. Don't like it. but not the end of the world/

You're looking at this all wrong. You have the luxo feeling with an econobox wallet. :o

    jmonroe
    Another wannabe!

I want to drive what I want to drive....not too concerned about depreciation. If I don't get enough I keep the one I have...or eat the difference if I have to. I learned....depreciation isn't a good enough reason to settle for a car I don't really want.
So what's your point, I agree with you. When did you come to this realization? It sounds like you are arguing with yourself.

    jmonroe
I like arguing with myself....I usually win.
That's the only time you can win arguments here on this forum - argue with yourself - odds much better than arguing with jmonroe. Come to think about it, I've seen you lose arguments with yourself here on this forum - when you finally break down and admit you were wrong about something. You're my kinda guy, driver. Love your rational and objective comments on just about everything. :D:p;)B)

Ice is expensive and widely spaced, especially out here. I remember being out at midnight on weekends when I was involved with the game.

Thanks. It definitely isn't easy. The parents are a good support group for one another. We are always willing to help someone else out if logistically they can't make the trip, but their son/daughter can. Some days are easier than others. Saturday night, both boys had games that were local (one at home, one at the next town over). The practices are sometimes difficult. My "Mite" usually has practice at 5:20 - 5:30 in the evening while my "Pee-Wee" has practice at 7:00 or 8:00 at night. 2x during the week. The rink is on the other side of town from where I live. It is 12 minutes there on a Sunday AM. At least 1/2 hour to 40 minutes one way during the evening rush.

When the Florida Panthers came to town and opened up an ice arena at the Bank United Arena in Sunrise, FL, I almost did a doo-doo in my pants! I said to myself - "...what idiot would be dumb enough to buy an expansion NHL team and house that team in South Florida?" Let's face it - the climate is not conducive to ice rinks. But, they did it anyway. The Panthers don't skate on ice down here, they skate on SLUSH! That's the only excuse I can come up with as to why they can't ever win their division - let alone the Stanley Cup! :DB)
