20 for 100 with your brother has you around to help him out and got rid of his accent it’s over and done with I wouldn’t trust that sales person either got a bad car which happens to all of them or just one of those people that find things to complete them out with everything ha ha Ha

One thing was reminded of.....this Hyundai salesman really badmouthed GM and Ford, said their warranties don't mean anything. I asked him why he said that and he mentioned they wouldn't fix the seats in his car....but, no real details. If you are going to make a statement like that I would like to hear about some specific examples...and what GM actually said or did.

When I was looking at 2015 cars and I looked at an Audi A6 I made it clear it was the first car I was looking at, and I was considering BMW, MB and Jaguar. The salesman said check out the others and see which car suits you. He didn't put the other makes down at all, and he knew, they were all good cars, he knows astute buyers will buy the car that has the features they are looking for. Fast talking and putting down other brands the buyer may like and respect isn't going to help lead to a sale.

Agreed. I noticed throughout my shopping experience this time around everyone was polite, explained the features of the car pretty well, wasn't pushy, and did not put down other makes. This being Northern Virginia, it was interesting to see the variety of ethnic backgrounds, too. I started at Volvo, where I was most interested in the new XC40 and also drove the XC60. Salesperson was a young woman from Ethiopia. Went on to Subaru and drove an Outback and a Forester - young Hispanic man. Nissan, drove a used Audi for the first time, salesman was a middle-aged man from Ghana. Finally Audi, salesman is a young man from Russia.

Wide variety of backgrounds. None were the hard-driving, obnoxious stereotypes of pushy salespeople, "what can I do to sell this car to you today?" types. They all knew I was still looking and was considering various options. Nice people, every one of them.

To extend these discussions on salespeople, a few years back I was browsing the Kia store's lot. An older salesman latched onto me despite telling him I wasn't buying now, he insisted on explaining why I needed one of their K-9 versions of the Optima called Cadenza, IIRC.

He was really pushing. I guess he didn't think I'd understand the ones without lots of options, the ones they had left but couldn't sell readily, were less desirable. I think he believed as a GM owner I'd be too dumb to know the difference. He explained he used to be a Lincoln-Mercury store salesperson. (I suspect he was at a local store owned by a Detroit basketball or football ex-player who dressed up in a superman costume for his commercials here. In his Fairfield, Ohio store 40 miles away, he wasn't in them and an older guy served as the spokesman. Targeting by demographics.)

The salesman said he interceded with the service department on behalf of "his" customers in order to get things fixed right. Well, I thought all those foreign brands were perfect and the shop areas were just for oil changes, if they needed them, and changing windshield wipers. I asked him why the service department didn't fix all the customer complaints, rather than the ones in which he had to step in. Were there that many problems with Kia's.

I was not his favorite customer any longer.

I frankly have very little interaction with floor sales anymore because I try and schedule appointments, middle of the week, to go test drive cars and then negotiate everything by email with a sales manager. Especially when I'm trying to hack a lease and I need someone with authority to approve deals.

When I went to the Honda dealer this week, I was a little worried about what I would walk into - I was expecting the "what will it take to get you to buy a car now" nonsense and was pleasantly surprised. Really low pressure, did a great job explaining the features of the car, and didn't even make me sit down to "have a chat" with the sales manager. I explained I was still test driving and was planning to make a decision this month, he told me there was no rush and to email him any questions I had or to stop back when I was ready. He was also more than willing to admit upfront that the Accords simply aren't selling right now and that he was hoping for some incentives to get them off the lot.

I haven't dealt with the Honda dealers up here before, but I had dealt with the Mazda dealer right down the street and that was a total nightmare.

Biancar......others are better at giving you info about SIM cards...that is out of my field of expertise. A good place to get info is youtube....go on and ask how to do something.
Would that be the same be the same YouTube that has videos with proof that the earth is flat, that you don't need a drivers license to "travel in your vessel" (drive a car), that only Federal employees are required to pay income tax and (my favorite) when you're born the government creates a corporation with your name and any legal document with your name in all caps is not referencing you but that corporation?
Yes, but there is also a very helpful "how to change out your Audi Key FOB battery" video on there too! They left out one important detail though, but I was careful not to force it.
My point is that you have to be careful of YouTube videos as for everyone that's helpful there is at least one that's harmful. To much misinformation out there.
Fair enough, but we have fixed our Keurig, I have found out how to set the Homelink, I found out how to reset the dishwasher, I have fixed toilets, I have got the computer back from the black death.....all from youtube. Youtube is my friend!
I am not saying that YouTube isn't helpful, I have used it a lot. it's just that there are a lot of people posting bad info and you just have to be careful about the advice on the video.

I used YouTube for repairing my washing machine and found a few videos showing the repair. One of them it was obvious that the guy had no idea what he was doing.

A couple of people I sold BMWs to told me that they appreciated that I wasn't pushy- I just answered questions and tried to make sure that they found the car that suited their needs/wants best.
The only time I even came close to bad-mouthing a competitor was when a couple told me that they were looking at an Alfa Giulia- right after it had been introduced.. I told them that I thought it was a wonderful car to drive, but that the Giulias that Car and Driver and Road & Track had driven had displayed a few glitches. They ended up driving the Alfa but came back the next day and bought a 340i.

Interesting shopping experience, the demographic change that some feared is now real in the DC, M-V metro area.

Meanwhile, what is your impression of the XC40? Last Monday we drove by a new "upscale" Volvo dealership on the Auto Mile in Boston. It was close to 4:00 PM and as we walked in we were politely greeted by a receptionist. We said we wanted to see an XC40 as there were none in the showroom. She said to wait while she went to find a sales associate.

She said she couldn't find any, when suddenly a salesman walked by. The receptionist asked if he could help us. He replied in a terse voice that he was busy. Flustered, the receptionist apologized, but recognizing that they did not want our business, we walked out. Ironically, my wife bought her last Volvo from that same dealership when they were housed in a rather down market facility. I guess they were not impressed with the way we were dressed or our Lacrosse (read old folks) parked upfront.

It's pretty rare for me to interact much with sales people either. I usually have my car purchased weeks before I set foot at the dealership. When I arrive, they just hand me the keys, swap the plates, and off I go. :)

Since I have bought my last three cars out of state, I've had to do it via phone calls and internet with the internet salesman but the last time he had to get approval from the SM because I refused to pay the "doc fee" of almost 600 bucks that was going to be applied in Fairfax VA. He said that is charged to everybody and it couldn't be removed. I told him I'd only pay what I'd pay if I bought in PA (about $125 in 2015, IIRC). Again he said it was "company policy" and it could not be removed or lowered. I thanked him and hung up. He called back in 20 minutes and said, "my SM will reduce it to $125 but it will be shown as the normal doc fee price on the order". I told him I didn't care how they wanted to do their bookkeeping as long as the bottom line was what I wanted.

Other than that possible glitch everything went well, just like the previous 2 purchases that were made in Ohio.

Interesting (as well as uncomfortable) situation occurred this morning while I was shopping at the Super Market. I usually start my shopping by stopping off at the Deli for some ham, salami and cheese. After that, I walk through the produce section and head for the juice section. This morning, I walked over to the refrigerated display of various citrus juice and grabbed the last two (2) containers of red grapefruit juice. As I am putting them into my cart, this elderly woman walks over to me with her shopping cart and takes the two containers of red grapefruit juice out of my cart and puts them into her cart. I asked her what the heck she was doing - taking my juice out of my cart and putting it into her cart. She then grabs her umbrella and started hitting me with it as she yells for the manager, screaming and ranting like she was being attacked. The other shoppers looked at me and we shrugged our shoulders - had no idea what she was trying to accomplish.

The manager of the store comes running over and asks the lady to calm down and explain what the problem was. She said that I (me) had tried to steal her purse! The manager looked at me and asked me to step back while he called the police. I was truly shook up about this whole affair. But I was lucky this morning - there were two other shoppers who had witnessed the woman taking the last two grapefruit juices out of my cart and put them into her cart and had seen the whole thing. They told the manager what had happened and that I did not try to steal her purse - but that she actually stole the grapefruit juices right out of my cart and when I confronted her about it, she started hitting me with her umbrella and claimed I tried to steal her purse.

The manager decided that it was best to call the police and have them settle the dispute and attempted purse-snatching as well as an ambulance since I was bleeding from my head. The police and ambulance arrived about 5 minutes later and asked the manager what the problem was. He said that this old lady was screaming and yelling because she said that I (me) had tried to steal her purse right there in the store as she was shopping. He further stated to the police that the man who was accused of stealing her purse (me) was being attacked by the old lady with an umbrella and told police that the man (me) had stated that the old lady had grabbed the last two red grapefruit containers from his shopping cart and then began screaming when she was confronted about taking his juice. The manager then pointed out the two witnesses who were shopping and told the police that they saw the whole thing and that the man (me) was correct and did not try to steal her purse - but that she was upset that she was caught taking the juice from my cart and putting the juice in her cart and began attacking the man (me). I began bleeding pretty badly from my forehead - remember that I take blood thinners which made the injury even worse.

One of the police officers tapped the other police officer on the shoulder and asked him to follow him a few feet. They discussed the situation and returned. The Sergeant took the two bottles of red grapefruit juice from the old lady's cart and put them back into my cart. He apologized to me and to the two witnesses for the unfortunate circumstances and asked us to continue shopping and that they would finish writing up a report. Before leaving, they asked me if I wanted to press charges against the old lady for hitting me with her umbrella and causing me injury - blood all over my forehead and face. I said I did not want to get involved in something like that.

The EMT's put a pressure bandage on my forehead and held it there for about 5 minutes until the bleed finally stopped. They wanted to take me to the ER at the hospital, but I refused - I didn't feel like waiting there for 3-4 hours to have them put a few staples in my forehead - that I was better off walking a short distance to my doctor's office (his office is closed to the super market) and have them dress the wound, etc., which I did after the EMT's were finished with me. I went to the Dr's office and he put a couple of butterflies on the cut and gave me instructions on how to care for the wound.

As I was coming out of the Dr's office and was walking toward my car, I noticed that they had arrested the old lady - she was screaming and shouting as they tried to put her into the patrol car. It would seem there was more to this old lady's problems than the fact that she like to hit people with her umbrella.

Just another day in the life of abaco mike. Unbelievable.!

P.S. I am wondering what was wrong with the old lady. She must have emotional problems mixed in with a little dementia or alzheimers! This could only happen to me - trying to buy Ruby Red Grapefruit Juice. Next time, I'll approach the refrigerated juice section at the super market more stealthfully - :D

But, don't you have to talk about your trade-in? And walk around it so they can point out every scratch so they can make you feel guilty for foisting such a trash heap on them. And, of course, if you have a 4 cylinder engine they say a 6 would have been worth more, and if you have a 6 cyl, they say they have buyers for 4's, no market for 6. Then they ask what options you have and if you don't have the automatic back scratcher device then they want to deduct a few $100 for that.

Seriously though, I see how you can negotiate a new car online or on the phone, but, I suppose you aren't trading in a car - that requires discussion.

There is an important lesson to be learned from this experience too; Are you sure you should be having red grapefruit juice or any grapefruit juice? Grapefruit juice can really mess up other medications. In any case, grapefruit juice is not good for you!

    (1) learn how to duck.

    (2) don't go grocery shopping on rainy days.

    @driver100:

As far as grapefruit juice is concerned, I drink a 1/4 glassful each monring at about 7:00 AM. Grapfruit juice can affect "statins" - which I take just before going to bed. My doctor told me that I should not drink grapefruit juice "with" the statin. So I'm good to go, according to him.

had a text from my son. Now has another sidewall bulge on his Audi (he just put the summer tires back on a few weeks ago). this is his 2nd, in about 1 years worth of driving with the standard tires (he had winter tires and wheels on this past winter).

he is thankful he got the tire and wheel protection package. Might be turning a profit on it.

Wasn't it Hyundai who wouldn't handle JMonroe's claim about a failed engine after an oil change at their store?

I also had done some browsing on the net much after that and found lots of comments about the smallest excuses being invoked to not honor what the warranty by HyKia seem to offer.

I could have gotten into more of what we discussed about me buying my 2015 Genny but since you brought up what might happen when you go in with your trade, I can say even that went as planned. Since I told them my '09 was in great shape, it was understood that they would have to see it. I remember the guy asking about my tires. I told him they were about 50% worn. He said when people buy more upscale cars they always have to put new tires on because that is what they are expecting. So, his price for my car would be reduced about $1000 because of that. I told him my car was worth his top price even with half worn out tires. Not to lose a sale he said he'd have to see it to make that determination. I understood that and was willing to make the drive to Fairfax VA to prove it to him. Mrs. j has a sister that lives in Reston VA, that is not all that far from the dealership, so we could visit them anyway. Kinda like killing two birds with one rock thing.

After I took the test drive, I was turned over to a salesman who immediately starts with wanting some more info from me. Specifically my DD214 because I am a veteran and that was good for a $500 discount from Hyundai. I stopped him and said, "before I give you that, what are you giving me for my car". He got a strange look on his face and said, "just what you ask for, why"? I told him about the tire thing and he said something like, "your car is still worth that even with bald tires". I knew that.

Fast forward to me looking at the dealers web site to see what they were asking for my '09 and they had 2 pics of the tires. They didn't put on new tires because the close up proved that to me. Maybe this was some of the savings they planned to make because I was a grinder about their "doc fee".

that was Hyundai, but he did the oil change. not the dealer so they cheesed out and denied it on a typo in his records.

Slight correction, the dealer did the last oil change about a month before the engine blew up. But they weaseled out because of a record keeping error they said I had on my "oil change log", even though I showed them where they could have been wrong about that. In the end they still screwed me out of about 3 grand for it when I sold it to them with the blown engine vs. a complete car.

But I made sure they lost several sales because of that and they knew I was responsible for that. One hit a real nerve when my uncle told them to cancel the deal he made with them while waiting for his car to come in. I can't remember now if it was a dealer trade or an ordered car. Even got a phone call from the SM about that.

I'd say they lost more than 3 grand in sales but even if they lost $30K in sales or more, that didn't put one penny back in my pocket. All I got was satisfaction that they knew why they lost sales.

I listen (via podcast) to a California radio show that has a regular feature called "Florida or anywhere else." The upshot is that most bizarre events (like yours) happen in FL, but not all. They describe 5-6 weird headlines, followed by the "Florida or anywhere else?" question. It's Florida at least half of the time, and the rest of the continent for the balance.

The climate may be hot and humid and there may be bugs the size of mice everywhere, but at least the people who exist there are in a class of their own. I guess it's what you call an acquired taste.

After others reminded me, I remembered it was a number error on your own oil change record. But wasn't there something about their last oil change record stating they had put in the wrong oil viscosity?

Well, Mike. I'm glad that everything worked out (relatively) well in the end. But, yes; wow! That's just insane. Perhaps dementia, but more likely just a very strong sense of entitlement and a penchant for "working the system." :(

I have never traded in a car. My cars exit my household either through private party sale or destruction (e.g., a true "total").

Good on ya! It's always highly satisfying knowing you had a real impact. I wrote an unflattering review for the dealer from whom I bought my Q7. They kept responding to the review trying to discount my assertions, so I kept responding to them to point out why they remained valid. Eventually, they stopped writing (after second or third response, IIRC). I guess they figured they could only dig their hole so deep!

Hopefully, that costs them a sale or two as well. Probably not, but I can always hope.

I would have wanted her charged AND the police to charge her for filing a false report. Too often people are able to make false accusations in this country with no penalty.

A talk host in Cincy on the morning show does a bunch of strange incidents that happen in FL. Someone else said there's a blog. However, I suspect these kinds of things happen other places as well.

That's hilarious. Where I live the two car companies with the worst reputation for not covering things under warranty are Hyundai and Ford, with FCA a close third.
Wasn't it Hyundai who wouldn't handle JMonroe's claim about a failed engine after an oil change at their store?

I also had done some browsing on the net much after that and found lots of comments about the smallest excuses being invoked to not honor what the warranty by HyKia seem to offer.
That is funny. Did I say I asked the salesman/courtesy car driver where he was from....since he lived right smack downtown. He said he has lived all over and didn't answer where he was from, though with a name like Boris (not really but like...I don't want to get him into trouble) that must be from somewhere. It was all very evasive.

He was very nice about driving us right up to my car and being extra polite as we were exiting, opening the door, but, I had the feeling I wasn't getting the real story, and I don't know why you would be evasive about what country or town you came from, or explain about the warranty issue. Also, how did a Hyundai salesman buy a $90k 2018 Yukon?

I bet she's the witch who put the bad luck hex on you and was angry that you haven't given up yet! :s

We are in Hillsborough County in Florida, the next county over is Polk County where Grady Judd is the Sheriff.....he is on the TV almost every night and his comments make for great TV.

    @abacomike,
    That is a crazy story.
It sounds like some kind of Candid Camera episode gone wrong.
Are you sure those were real police officers? Maybe it was a grocery store ploy to get you to use their shop at home service that went a little sideways.
Alternate strategy, wear one of those Jason hockey masks when you go grocery shopping.

Don’t know.  The only times I saw her was when she was slapping me with her black umbrella and again outside as she was being arrested and placed in a patrol car.

My guess is that she probably drove an old Toyota Camry like half the residents in my Condo community - or maybe a Hyundai Sonata or Honda Accord like the other half.  :p
