Thanks for your kind remarks about Trixie,,,,much appreciated.

Will you need to apply for papers to give Trixie Canadian citizenship before going back home?
Funny, they have no idea what dogs you bring in or take out of Canada/U.S.A. As long as you have rabies certificate. I guess since Trixie is an American citizen we could apply for immigrant status.

@driver I don't remember which but I either encouraged you to find another dog after your last one passed on because you obviously have so much to share with a dog. I probably encouraged your looking into rescuing one.

Or I predicted you would get one before too long.

Really glad you have a new family member.

Thanks imid. Our plan was to get a rescue dog, or as they are often called a fostered dog. It is a good idea, instead of them being in a large building people look after them in their homes. Each county has such services. We filled out long applications in 3 counties, we didn't hear back from anyone. We saw dogs we wanted to see online, but when we requested a meeting, the dogs were gone from the site or no one replied. We were close to a store that sells puppies and went in more just to form ideas about what we wanted and when Mrs D saw Trixie she said she was perfect.....there wasn't much point in letting her slip by.....especially because her sister was sold a few hours earlier and she was the last one.
    Thanks for the nice comments.

I lifted this Q & A from Quora. A reader asked at what mileage is a car sent to the junk yard.

*Ans.* I worked in a junk yard for about a year once. I took note of the mileage of the cars we were junking.

Most American cars were done at about 160,000 miles, unless it was a Crown Vic, in which case 300,000+ was common.

Japanese cars were usually good for about 240,000, unless it was a Subaru, which got 300,000+ unless it was a Justy, or a Mitsubishi, which was less good than American.

German cars varied considerably. VWs are pretty much junk at any point. BMWs would go as long as the Japanese.

Mercedes were generally over 300,000. With that being said, a car is good as long as it’s maintained. I know of a W116 Mercedes 300SD that went over one million miles before the engine was rebuilt, and then was driven some more. I’ve also seen cars go to the crusher with less than 100,000 miles on them.

My ’77 Mercedes 240D was basically crusher bait after 242,000 miles due to rust. My ’83 Mercedes 300D has 357,000 miles and is still going with the four speed manual out of the ‘77.

Thanks of...all information helps. These units didn't always have the top reviews, I think the video was made by one distributor pushing their own lines. For the most part they were all pretty bulky, and not built in like the mirror unit. The Thinkware Pro F800 was over $400. The Yi Ultra was less than $50 but was very bulky and had wires - plug it into cigarette lighter and stick it directly on the windshield...also no back up camera.

I learned some things though, the Thinkware one had blueray capability, playback on your phone.

Mrs D had to have another dog. We tried adopting and rescue places, filled out forms, they don't get back and dogs she asks about mysteriously disappear from the site and we don't get a chance, so we went to a "puppy store" Meet Trixie....3 months old, a Shorkie - Shitsu/Yorkie. Now the fun starts....crying and house training, what did we do?

@driver, Trixie reminds me of the Little Red Riding Hood story where little Red Riding Hood said to the fox who was disguised as a her grand mother, "what big feet you have grandma"? Warm wishes to your new bundle of joy. Remember dogs are people too.

@driver100, congrats on the puppy punch....super cute. The day you ”adopted” her is the best day of her life. Our older of of two rescues is another Trixie. She was solely a breeder’s dog and had no name only a serial no. She was picked up by a rescue organization before she was to be destroyed. They gave her the name which we kept. When we first got her she would just stare up at the sky, the stars, birds, etc...quite sad.

Thanks bwia, I like the "Remember dogs are people too."........how true.

Carnaught, how nice of you to save the dogs you have made a home for.
I have learned there are some really good people in this world, who save dogs and puppies. Many volunteer at shelters and many foster dogs and cats in their home. Sometimes we forget how caring and kind people can be.

I thought it would be a longer time before we got another dog.......but, life isn't the same without one around.

Well BMW has made a few turkeys (E38 7 series) but so has just about every manufacturer. Subaru @ 300K miles? Er....I don't think so in most cases. You can point a finger at just about any individual model and make..

What's really driving this argument I think is that some cars cost a lot more to maintain properly, and so people become negligent in order to save money--and the car suffers for it.

Just a weird enough sighting to share. I passed a 2002 Arizona Beige Ford Taurus today..

Nothing really weird about that... until you looked at the left rear quarter panel and saw, in weathered (I think they may have been red originally), stick on letters like you'd use to put a name on a mailbox, the words:

    BUILT FOR FUN

One list claims this is the Top 10 of cars that last the longest. Must be a Canadian report, these cars usually last 300000 kms, or 180000 miles.

Top 10 cars that last the longest miles
    Kia Forte
    Toyota Corolla
    Honda Civic
    Toyota Camry
    Subaru Outback
    Ford Taurus
    Acura TL
    Chevrolet Impala
    Buick Encore
    Nissan Murano
The article says simple cars last longer, less to go wrong.
    Top 10 Cars for Longevity
    Another list goes like this:
CARS - Percentage shows percentage that make it to 200000 miles
    Toyota Avalon, 2.4 percent
    Honda Accord, 2 percent
    Ford Taurus, 1.8 percent
    Toyota Camry, 1.5 percent
    Chevrolet Impala, 1.5 percent
    Toyota Prius, 1.3 percent
    Nissan Maxima, 1.3 percent
    Longest-lasting trucks
Trucks more likely to last 200,000 miles or more are:

    Toyota Tacoma, 2.6 percent
    Honda Ridgeline, 2.2 percent
    Toyota Tundra, 2.2 percent
    Chevrolet Silverado 1500, 2.1 percent
    Ford F-150, 1.9 percent
    GMC Sierra 1500, 1.8 percent
    Nissan Titan, 1.7 percent
    Chevrolet Colorado, 1.5 percent
    SUV's
    Toyota Sequoia, 6.6 percent
    Ford Expedition, 5.4 percent
    Chevrolet Suburban, 5.2 percent
    Toyota 4Runner 4.2 percent
    GMC Yukon XL, 3.9 percent
    Chevrolet Tahoe, 3.8 percent
    GMC Yukon, 2.8 percent
Every list is different, I guess they collect them in different ways. CR has a list that has a lot of cars you would never expect on the list, Verano, Fiat, Fit, Camaro..........

well, one issue is that not all cars are used the same. More likely that a Fiat is used as a local car, not for long commutes or long distance travel. And Camaro/Mustang as a toy/spare/fun car. In either case, just not as likely to get the kind of annual miles put on to ever get to a couple hundred thousand miles.

All kinds of factors.....Fiats it was mentioned are just used for light use in the city, and if a car is cheaper to fix people keep them longer....and, they haven't mentioned maybe other cars are in more accidents because these cars are driven so slowly so they tend to last longer. A car like a Camaro is a real enthusiasts car....no one buys them to get to work and back....so maybe those owners fix them and take better care of them. Maybe the guy who buys a 335 really doesn't care whether his car lasts for 200000 miles, he can trade every 3 or 4 years....and maybe he likes cars more and wants to get a newer one.....so not as important as it is for the Corolla guy to keep his car on the road as long as possible. Business guys with luxury cars write down cars for taxes, so they aren't as concerned about a car lasting 200k miles.

I would think Camaro and Mustangs would get harsher treatment than other cars hence fewer make it onto the longevity list. Having said that, I occasionally see Camaros on CL with 175-200k miles but only the V6 models with the robust 3.8L. Ford’s 3.8L was not nearly as good.

    Too funny.

Then on that basis I have proof that Krogering is dangerous to your car's health. Just started raining, I made left turn onto multilane road and a Saturn came out of a bank lot diagonally across the left lane and on into the right lane in front of me. I would have hit their right front door if I hadn't hit the brakes.

A few months back I had a lady pull out of the same entrance from Kroger blinded by the cars in the right lane turning in to the gas station entrance. I stopped less than a foot short of her rear bumper. I had just watched a Judge Judy skit where someone had pulled out without being able to see oncoming traffic and got hit.

That makes two times. I'm shopping at Meijers and Walmart.

    180000 miles over 12 years?
    180000 miles over 5 years?

Would make a lot of difference because of the variable NOT considered along with TIME and that is maintenance level. The foreign brands in the 80s and 90s threatened their buyers that they had to return for service or else.... When the cars were returned regularly for service, other problems were fixed avoiding unhappy customers.

I’ve been running my AC every day these past few weeks - been in the mid 80’s every day and in the mid 70’s every night with high humidity.  Those folks who came to South Florida for winter break sure got their money’s worth this year.

As I walked through the mall I saw many people with sunburns.  This is very unusual for this time of year.  The forecast for the next 10 days is for highs in the mid to upper 70’s and lows at night in the high 50’s to mid 60’s. Those are more normal temps for December - February.

Come on down guys - it’s really nice down here for a change.

It sure took you long enough to invite me. When can I expect the airfare money?

I was going to say, "How could that accident happen?", but I think you are right...looks like texting or phoning.
You probably heard about the one on I-75 - the very highway I mention, 7 people killed including 5 children on the way to Disneyland. Truck hits a car, both break through the center barrier into opposite lanes, truck gets hit by another truck and the car with the kids...huge fireball. It seems the truck driver who caused the accident has had several tickets for very dangerous driving, before this one.

When can I expect the airfare money? jmonroe
Jmonroe, you are welcome in my home at any time - I will even pick you up at the airport - but you need to buy your own airline tickets!  You are not related to me (thank God) and I don’t pay for airline tickets for anyone unless they are related to me - and no I refuse to adopt you!  :o;)
I guess that means being a foster child is out too. :'( jmonroe
No, I do take pity on the less fortunate children of the world!  ;)

of Hey, it’s bad all over. This was the third one near me this week. I think the use of phones while driving combined with a sense of entitlement is to blame.
He should be put in jail for 200 years - even if he dies after 30 years, his body should rot for the remainder of his sentence! :'(:o:(

I try to avoid I-95 down here in South Florida because of the tremendous truck traffic - I prefer the Florida Turnpike.  The inertia those trucks create because of their weight and wind vacuums behind them is very dangerous to other vehicles.

Those innocent children killed because of that crash is sinful.  Then there are the survivors - it could take years for them to resume normal lives if that is at all possible.

I could use a little advice from you guys.  My front tires will have to be replaced in a few thousand miles.  The rear tires are fine - but they are a different size.

I was wondering if I could put Michelin’s in the front instead of the OEM Pirelli’s and when the rear tires need to be replaced, put Michelin’s in the back to match the fronts.

Would doing that cause a problem with handling and safety?  What about the car’s warranty - would that void the warranty?  Anyone do what I am contemplating with their car?

I want Michelin’s because they provide better wear and longevity.  Thanks for the feedback.

It certainly won’t void the warranty. Safety and driveability are a little in question only because you are changing the balance of grip between the front and rear. But it probably would not matter in the real world. I mean, improper inflation does the same thing yet that doesn’t seem to bother 99% of drivers.

I have never owned a set of Pirelli tires. Came close a couple of times but never pulled the trigger. I think part of that is because in my mind I think of them as troublesome tires prone to blowing out and wearing out prematurely. Any real-world experiences worth relating here (other than Mike's, which is making me wonder how front tires on a RWD car wear out so quickly)?

Though not an immediate issue, you may want to check your lease agreement to confirm if the tire brand has to be matching for all four tires. I know the Honda lease stipulated tire brand had to match on all. I do prefer Michelin however.

I was really disappointed with the OEM Perellis on my Ford. After 10k miles they started whining like snow tires. I also had the same trouble with some Michelins that came with my old Lincoln. Developed a whine that made me have the car checked for bad wheel bearings.

So I’m no help at all.

I don’t think the minor handling changes between brands would worry me.

@driver100 ...congrats on the new addition to the family.

Looks like jury duty for me starts next week.

And, getting all of my receipts in order today for the inevitable arrival of my W2....UGH!

Nice and sunny....May go searching for a G70 to test drive later today. Not very hopeful I’ll find one, though.

I've run Pirellis on several of my cars with no issues whatsoever. I've gravitated to Michelins only because I think their UHP summer and all-season tires are superior to most anything out there.

That is only 2 incidents within a few hours. I get at least 2 on my way to tennis, and 2 more on the way home when I play.....

The incidents were about 3 months apart. BUT the person driving last night probably was older. They used the idea that if I go slowly, they're stop for me when I pull out or cross lanes. This person was in an old vehicle that appeared to have "stuff" piled up on the back seat, a taillight out, and the driver sitting very low in the seat.

I flashed lights and sound my horn. They turned into the second Kroger entrance on that street and slowly went along in front of the store, actually weaving off to the side of the usual two lanes people use. It was like they were drunk? I should have called the locals to suggest they check that vehicle. But I didn't. I just hit the pharmacy and got an item in the store and carefully drove home.

But I thought of your Florida descriptions of driving, or actually attempts at driving by people.

Speaking of tires, my wife and I were driving up to Northern KY to stay at a B&B; on the way up I hit a huge pothole on I-71 that flattened the RF tire on the X1. The X1 came with Bridgestone DriveGuard tires- a W rated all season RFT, so I was able to limp back to my BMW dealer. The NCM gave me a loaner so I could drive home and get my 2 Series to continue our journey. Fortunately the tire was the only thing that was damaged.
Now to file a claim with the KY Department of Transportation; they shouldn't complain too much, as the tire cost plus installation was only $252.

It has been many years since I've had a decent set of tires OEM on a new car. Brand doesn't seem to matter, so I wonder if the tire manufacturer's cheapen them to meet low bid or car manufacturer requests?

I can’t say that... the OEM Bridgestone and Dunlop’s I’ve had stunk but my last three Buick’s with Michelin have all been great.  So it’s been a mixed bag.

My Elantra has Kumho and I don’t have enough miles to tell wear but handling and wet traction are great

@abacomike any idea why your front tires are wearing so quickly?  You’re talking replacement at less than 15k miles.

Thanks houdini. Trixie is just under 3 months of age. We slept about 20% of the night the first night. She was in a babies playpen until the crate arrives from amazon. The second night I used a small doggy bed, and put her on the floor in our bedroom. We slept about 80% on the 2nd night. I was up at 2 a.m. so I took her out.
So far, she loves her toys, she follows us everywhere, she can go for a long walk on a leash.....loves walking and wants to keep up. Doesn't seem to bark too much, though Shiatsu's and Yorkies are barkers. I am hoping our laid back and encouraging manner make her calm. She played with a neighbors dog in our home this morning and she was fine.....seems to want to socialize. She watches everything.....really likes to watch me tie my shoe laces, and then wants to chew on them. She seems to watch a bit of TV and looks if there is a dog barking or door closing....Gigi ignored the TV.
She is very lovable.......really cute to watch. I like when she runs in the grass, she bobs up and down like a rabbit.
