I read yesterday that by 2021 Honda will only sell EVs in Europe. What combination of economics/regulations make that a viable business model?

    Reflections on daily life:

Ran over a stick while mowing and as luck would have it played havoc with the mower belt. Got the belt reattached but the stick had messed up the mower engagement cable and the belt itself looked ratty. So I took it to the shop where I normally get service only to get the “too busy” bum’s rush. Called a bunch of places to no avail. Even called Home Depot where I bought it and got hung up on for my trouble. Finally, got one place who couldn’t service it themselves but gave me a shop 20 miles away. This place was the opposite of the others, was friendly and said to bring it right in and they’ed have it back in a week. Relief! I think it would have been easier to get someone to work on a Lamborgini.

I would suggest that any young person looking for a career consider lawn mower repair because there seems to be such demand that most shops are at full capacity and can afford to be rude to customers.

On the way back I encountered a motorcycle rider who almost caused a crash when as I was signaling to change lanes blasted past me on the right. Fortunately for him, I saw him approaching at high speed and swerved left so as not to knock him into the bushes. As it turned out we were heading the same way and I got to witness him pull more reckless maneuvers to gain a car length here and there, always with me catching up at the next light.

Motorcyclists always warn drivers to be aware of bikes but I can’t help but think they should return the favor and not drive like lunatics.

    Rant over.

Oh, and flew on an Airbus M20i I think it is called. Never sat in such a cramped plane. I am not overweight and I could barely get into my seat, and once in there was no room to stretch legs. Had to put Trixie under the seat in front of me.....could hardly do the contortions it took to get her under there. Even Mrs. D was crammed in at 5.3". On a 3 hour flight almost unbearable....can't imagine 4 or 5 hours, I would be screaming in agony.

Warned you driver - very warm down here. It's been raining all day with thunder and lightning - so it didn't hit 90. Same for tomorrow. Still waiting for that first cold front to make it all the way down the peninsula.

The C250 was down a pound in each front tire, down 4 pounds in the rear tires. I am thinking of getting an air pump. Seems they are usually 12V and run off cigarette lighter outlet, most have digital readout and automatic stopping at correct pressure. On Amazon I see one is $12.99 and seems to do everything, some are about $30, it seemed to me ones at $35 seemed to have the best reviews and features.

@driver100, I’ve had the best luck with Viair air pumps. They make one for around $40 (no need to get their most expensive one). They last the longest and are the fastest. The $15 dollar ones, other brands, work a couple of times, but you have to wear ear plugs and have a lot of time on your hands for the tire to fill.

    Something like this: https://amazon.com/VIAIR-84P-84p-Portable-Compressor/dp/B01MS75ZMY/ref=sr_1_18?crid=7FBJVPLXHFR&keywords=vlair+air+pump&qid=1572132510&sprefix=Vlair+air+pump%2Caps%2C200&sr=8-18

Driver, if you intend to use it at home, get one that plugs into a wall outlet instead. Much more powerful usually, so goes quicker. I have a little Black and Decker unit, and can put 5 pounds in a car tire in maybe 1-2 minutes. Plus doesn't run down your battery.

If possible, get a digital gauge though. I would like to have that (mine is probably 15 YO at this point and has a "take a guess" dial).

That was my first thought....wanted one that plugs into wall. I don't know if cigarette lighter would be that reliable. It is mainly for when we get to Florida and car is sitting for 5 months. Be nice to get pressure up and help get rid of flat spots, and not have to home gas station one is working. I will check for this...I would rather fill them up at home.

Looked at portable tire pump compressors last night on Amazon and found none that plugged into a wall outlet, all ran off a 12v socket. Some of the Viair ones required 15 amps from the socket which is a bit scary.

The one I have just plugs into the cigarette lighter which I prefer as occasionally I might need it where there is no outlet. Only takes a couple of minutes to top off a tire.

I bought Harbor Freight air pumps years ago to keep in the trunk of the car. They plug into the cigarette lights socket and have to be started before screwing the air tube onto the valve stem--the motor cannot operate the piston from a dead stop against the air pressure from the tire.

SEveral times I stopped when the leSabres had a low tire, usually from a small nail that seeped air and plugged in my handy dandy.

I have three in the little bags for carrying them sitting in the trunks. I use mine for raising the pressures when the cold temps hit like this week.

They have an inexpensive model that's mostly plastic for $10. It works.
I bought a higher price model with metal housings that has a ficticious list price of $35 now, but is often on sale and can be bought with a 20% off coupon that comes in email off the sale price.

The unit I bought is at the bottom in the picture of the cheaper version.
The unit is about the size of two fists side-by-side.

I am learning about air pumps. 110Volt plug into wall units are hard to find and very expensive...also pretty big. The one Carnaught suggested is top notch, but better than I need. It seems for around $25 there are lots that have similar features, they are 12V, but I like the very compact ones. Main points are excellent reviews, digital readout, LED display, some have a bright light in case of dark. Hard choice, about 3 or 4 that look ideal...I don't ant to spend more time on it - I will probably only use it 3 or 4 times a year.

There's a NOVA program about Look Who's Driving. It's about the technology being implemented to give cars the ability to drive themselves--sort of.

I think PBS programs can be viewed online at any time and my cable provider has On Demand which I think would allow me to view it at no extra charge about the outrageous monthly rate they already charge.

Michigan Court Rules Tire Rotation Does Not Include Tightening Lug Nuts

Couple took their car into dealer....dealer did a tire rotation, front left wheel not tightened. Wheel came off.
They sued and initially won, $40k damages, $70K in legal fees.
Then judge overturned, said the work was done....tires were rotated, garage not responsible.

So, essentially, the judges ruled that a tire rotation does not include tightening the lug nuts. The only requirement is “remov[ing] the tires and replace them on different axles or sides of the vehicle.” It does not involve using a torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts.

Basically, going forward, Michigan residents have two options. Either appeal the case and hope it heads to the State Supreme Court. Or, have the MVSRA clarified to include such details

    FULL STORY

Does this make one bit of sense?

BTW...this happens a lot...good thing JMonroe always tightens his own lug nuts.

FWIW, I have every one of those air thingies shown on that linked page.

BTW, I don't like that $35 job because I don't like the screw-on fitting that attaches to the tire valve stem. The few times I needed more air while on the road, I used the cheapy yellow job with the quick connector.

There are laws against endangering people by negligence, federal and surely, State of Michigan, too. The judge must be on the take or out of his mind.

    Thanks, I got tired of looking at air pumps....I liked the compactness and looks of this one;

It says: Breezz Tire Inflator, Air Compressor Pump, 12V DC Portable Auto Tire Pump with Digital Display Pressure Gauge up to 150PSI for Car, Bicycle and Other Inflatables $25.97

So, I can use it on my inflatables as well :D

For as much as you say you know about car maintenance, I believe you. :o

I read yesterday that by 2021 Honda will only sell EVs in Europe. What combination of economics/regulations make that a viable business model?

It’s was not 2021, but 2025, then they accelerated to 2022, but it’s not EV, but “electrified”, i.e. EV or hybrid. Essentially they are ditching gas only cars. Others made similar declarations.

I agree that the snap on fitting should work better. I didn't really notice the difference when I looked at that page. The screw on is fairly easy to hit right, but I've done it fairly often--practice makes perfect.

I may buy the cheaper on for son and DIL in his Cruze, just in case. I'll take back the one they have that's the higher priced one bought on sale and coupon for something like $20 ca.

I consider myself a pretty good screwer but I don't like that so called better one because of that screw-on fitting. In the Genny I have the screw-on one and the cheapy yellow job. In Mrs. j's Subie there are two of the yellow jobs. I'm pretty sure I paid only 5 bucks for the yellow ones when they were on sale years ago. Hell, for 5 bucks it's worth having a spare and I was thinking of buying another one just to cut off the quick connector and putting it on the more expensive one. Then I realized that the hose is small enough as it is and by the time I spliced it in with a short piece of 1/8 in tubing, I'd be reducing the air flow too much. Those things are slow pumpers as it is so I canned that thought. That pancake compressor is what I use for tire inflation in the garage and because it's a fairly small capacity unit, tire inflation is about all that thing is good for anyway but still quicker than the 12 volt units in the trunk of both cars.

The compressor I have in my garage for tires will also power my nail gun - somewhat to my surprise.

I have an electric nail gun I got for finish nailing quarter round. Always wanted a compressor. Would never use it of course, but does not stop me from wanting one!

I hated the 12v units. way too slow, and either have to sit with car running or run down the battery. That is why I got the unit that plugs into the wall too.

Funny, sometimes cheap and simple work best. That is one reason I settled for the $25 one...it seemed to do what I want with less hassle.

It is supposed to arrive today, but I went to Circle K for air yesterday. Used my VISA to pay $1.75, the dial wouldn't go on air...went on Vacuum instead, vacuum started up, no hose on the vacuum anyway, so stood there. Next time I double checked, turned on air......started it, paid $1.75, and the vacuum came on.

The guy at the next air pump thing couldn't get his to work, he was calling the help number. I wrote the help number down.....deciding to try and get my $3.50 back. I think I will wait for my pump. You are lucky if the gas station pump works!

I have no idea what you guys are talking about now. Inflatables, vacuum pumps... I think I am in the wrong discussion.
