    Congratulations on your son’s milestone.

I’m “camping” in Hiawassee, GA right now. Trying to miss the first Vermont snow, but expecting a hard freeze even down here tomorrow night. Stay warm everybody!
I’ll be home to Vermont Tuesday or Wednesday to the forecasted frigid temps with snow. So winter begins:(

We are finally expecting our first of two cold fronts that will make their way down the peninsula in the next few days. Tomorrow our temps will finally drop to the low 80's by day and low 70's at night. On Tuesday, we are expecting the second cold front to drop daytime temps into the 70's and nighttime temps into the 60's. YEAH! I can finally open up the windows and turn off the AC for the first time since April.

But today, temps are expected to reach the low 90's again - ENOUGH ALREADY! 😝😩

Looks nice. Really low miles. Think guy is a curbstoner? Would it matter? Not many photos. Does have a licence plate on it. Why sell right after getting a new engine, tires and brakes? If everything checks out...new lifetime warrantied engine, probably get it for $6,500.

    Quick question for the experts.

The cold weather has set and my battery is dead after sitting idle for about weeks without any activity. Everything is dead not even the fob works. My question thus, should I do a jump start or have the car towed to the dealership where they will replace the battery, do a re-flash and reset my preferences? Also, does the battery have reserve power to protect the electronics in situations like that?
  • tjc78tjc78 Member Posts: 16,976
I wouldn't worry about the electronics, they should be fine. Are you able to take out the battery yourself?

If so I would just take it out, have it tested and if known bad replace with new.

If you can't, I'd do a jump start (preferably from a jump start box) and drive it over.

Got my Nokian winter tires for the Rogue this morning before we drove down to visit with the kids and grandkid. Didn't expect it, but there were flurries that were laying on the road surface on the trip. That will get it REALLY hectic at my buddy's tire shop/garage

Just a reminder...I have little technical knowledge, but I would worry about losing all your settings if the battery is dead. The instructions that come with the MB say if you leave it for more than 6 weeks use a trickle charger, if you lose your settings they could cost $1000s to reset. When my friend had his Maserati he went away for 4 weeks, came back, lost all his settings. When we are in Florida for 5 months our at home cars are on trickle chargers for 5 months, the Florida car is on one for 7 months when we are North.

Having said that, I don't see how getting a boost would hurt anything.....maybe the battery had some reserve power to keep the settings......but, my opinion isn't worth a lot.

My first question would be how old is the battery? Shouldn’t die in a few weeks if it’s less than 3 years old. Modern batteries seem to go bad all of a sudden. Had a battery die like that on me once, started fine in the morning, dead as could be when I tried to restart in the afternoon.

My first inclination would be to try a jump start and then take it to the dealer for inspection. It might screw up some of the electronic functions, on mine it did something to the power window and the dealer had to reset something. If you have a lot of electronic nannies there’s no telling what gets screwed up.

One possible thing to check is the key fob itself. I had a fleet car that wouldn’t start, fob wouldn’t make it lock doors etc. I was able to start it by pressing the start button with the fob itself. Evidently the fob battery was weak and the car couldn’t detect the signal except at close range.

I think we need to censor talk about how hot and nice it is in South Florida. LOL

Our friends just came back from Ft. Lauderdale visiting their son and DIL for a 10-day trip. I didn't ask if they were happy to be back in the global cooling we're getting. Going down 20s for tonight and then cold days in that range first of the week!

My car shows are over, but Muncie Indiana, home of alma mater BSU has resurrected what many here may have seen in high school days where young folks cruised certain streets in their old, new, junk, etc., vehicles. In Muncie they started a cruise on their historic main street one evening a month last year. I hoped to make it but never worked out this summer. But they have one this month. Lots of cars will already have been mothballed, but I suspect I'll spend an hour 15 and drive over just to watch the people show off their cars who are the hardy ones. The good thing is the cars have the hoods down, unlike lots of the car shows/cruise ins.

Might go early and visit BSU campus again. Old memories.

Discovered something I never realized today. After getting the winter wheels/tires swapped on to the ATS on Wednesday, the TPMS seemed fine on the way home. But yesterday it flashed a warning message saying it needed service. I returned to the tire shop today to have the sensors “relearned” by the car. They said they had the set they took off too close to the car when they reset the sensors the first time and that was why it failed as it connected the car to the take-offs by mistake. Said it happens from time to time. All fixed now.

Said it happens from time to time......possibly only at their shop, never heard of it happening to anyone else. But, when you read how intricate the system is it is a miracle the systems work as well as they do....except the readings don't seem to be too accurate.

While on the subject of tire sensors, how accurate are the sensors that are installed on the car? Obviously every car and sensor system is different, but I was just wondering if the sensors are accurate +/- 2 or 3 psi, or even more accurate than that range.

Remember I used the air pump at Circle K, it didn't work twice, I lost $3.50. Although it took more time than it was worth I called their 1-800 number, very pleasant lady took my information, said they would send a check.

I received the check for $3.50 today, but they left off half of my last name....repeated everything on the phone. I gave up, but Mrs D says it can still be cashed. I looked it up, and this is what it says:
    Let the Teller Know
Tell the teller. If the misspelling is harder to read than a mere missing letter or two, go to the teller inside your bank and explain your problem. The teller will instruct you to endorse the check exactly as it is made out, with the name misspelled. Then you will be instructed to write your name with the correct spelling below that.

Hopefully they won't give me a hassle over $3.50!

just stick the check in the ATM. I think they take anything that way. Pretty sure I have done it with checks I forgot to endorse.

Mike, the sensors on my cars have always been pretty accurate compared to my little electronic tire pressure gauges (I keep one in each car). But who knows how accurate those are!

Just endorse as For Deposit Only and your bank will accept it for deposit into your account with no issues no splaining.

". . . how accurate are the sensors that are installed on the car?"

On my Acura, they've been remarkably accurate, within a pound or two of my handheld dial pressure gauge. I find it very helpful to be able to see what all four pressures are when I get a low tire pressure light (particularly at this season of the year) -- tells me if I should have a tire repaired, or just wait for them to warm up until I have a chance to pump them all up 3-4 psi.

When we got the Forester, I was surprised to learn that there was no way to look at individual pressures or even to see which tire or tires were causing the light -- you have to look at all four of them with a real gauge to find out what's going on.

If there’s a delay at the bank it’s because the teller is trying to stall you until the SWAT team arrives.🤑

My TPM system reports each individual tire and its position on the car by psi as well as temperature of each tire in fahrenheit degrees. I assume the reason for the temperature report for each tire is to forewarn you when a tire is running excessively "hot" and might have an issue with the tread, alignment, etc. I remember on my first set of Pirelli's on the front, the left front tire always ran 10-15 degrees hotter than the other three tires. When I replaced the front tires at 10,000 miles, there was excessive wear on the left front tire on the outside tread which meant that that wheel was out of alignment for quite some time.

With cooler weather beginning to arrive here, I will have to have them add air to all four tires.

My Fusion tire pressure IP readout matched my tire gauge.
for some reason the right rear on the F150 readout usually indicates a pound lower than the other tires with the same gauge.
I think I will check the MKZ today, just to see. I did set the pressures a coupe of weeks ago.

I love having the individual readout. I cycle through the TC menus every so often (one of which is tire pressure) just to check. Partly to see if any tire is low so might be leaking, but largely to see if the outside temps had changed enough to need to adjust them all (about time to put that winter air in!)

ab348, how many miles or kilometers on the ATS? Do you even burn a full tank of gas in the Cutlass when you have it out for the season? Not knowing much about the area that you live just wondering ...

Just under 12000km on the ATS, so about 7000 miles. I don't drive a whole lot these days and especially this year given my health issues which prevented a couple of road trips I had been thinking about taking. The Cutlass suffered even worse this year. Last week I filled the tank after adding Stabil in preparation for putting it away over the winter. Took $60 to fill, which was the only gas I used all year. It snowed here overnight which means my timing was good. Most years I would have used it much more.

That was my first thought too....but, then I thought what if they want me to come in and try to explain it to them - all for $3.50.
The easiest solution would be to throw it away.

Between my two summer cars I only did about 2000 miles total this year. Pathetic.😪

We had very few miles on our Wrangler this summer. Have to plan more fun adventures for next summer!

I’m sure you wanted to drive the Cutlass more @ab348, I hope you get to next year.

Guess you will have to get a 300 mile oil change. Are you going to get a new filter too?
Oldfarmer will need a 2000 mile oil change and ab....what do you do....zero miles in one year?

    @driver100,
I'm going to skip the fall oil change. Only 300 miles, whats the point? Just wait until next year.
I did put the top down in the spring and never put it back up.
Will have to that before I put the cover on it.
