There is a supermarket chain here that I need to learn never to buy 2 things at: raspberries, and blackberries. The blackberries are less of a problem as I don't really care for them that much, but I like raspberries and the lifespan on a clamshell pack of those bought at this market chain seems to be no more than 36 hours before they go moldy.

So here is a minor rant...

I'm sure most of you now have cars that are fully connected to your cell phone. BT calls, car play, text notifications... etc etc

So this morning I'm bopping along music cranked and BAM... I get in a text message thread that had 27 messages in about 5 minutes. Every 10 seconds my music was being interrupted.

I know I know... first world problems but just a little annoying!

I never bothered to figure out how to get texts to appear in CUE on the ATS. I'm sure there must be a way. Don't know if the phone needs a cable connection (which I almost never do) or if it can do it wirelessly. If the latter, it must require a separate setup vs. phone calls.

AB...CUE does indeed need to have a cable connected to the Caddy via USB. IIRC, it’s the USB behind the motorized door of the CUE screen.

Now can we get back to refrigerators?
We prefer side by side, the doors take up less room when they are open. Better for getting by and into the laundry room if one person is in the fridge, and the other is walking through.
Just noticed the door is actually rusting out or something just under the plastic where the ice and water handles are.

So, while I was busy trying to make enough so I can retire like the rest of you folks, I was driving down a fairly busy thoroughfare about 5 miles from where I live. They had built an Aldis. I have heard about these grocery stores, and know they are somehow related to Trader Joe’s.

I pulled in. Got some Organic Milk, Organic Eggs, some tomato/basil wraps for my lunches. In and out for about $8. Just giving everything a perfunctory look, I’d say they’re about 25%-30% cheaper, like-for-like, than Krogers. Not huge and not offering the butchers a Kroger offers. But, for everyday items, pretty darned good stuff at very nice prices. While I only had a few items, I guess if you need a grocery cart, you have to leave a 25¢ deposit to use one.

Aldi was started by two brothers in Germany and was split into Aldi North and Aldi south with territories split. My understanding is that in countries where one operates the other states out of. Here in the U.S. both operate Aldi north operates as traderJoe's. So while they have a common origin they are not related.

Driver, just crack open the wallet and get a fridge. Unless you are trying to save the money for your son in law to inherit?

My Whirlpool french door performs really well, good cooling, freezing, climate. It has one serious flaw - the doors don't shut without you intently pressing on them due to little lip with too much resistance. It would be fine if the fridge had a buzzer, alerting you the door is open, but it doesn't. I left it crack-open way too many times I care to admit. Very annoying. It also had a small flaw with the deicing system - grommet that was made of soft rubber would get sticky after couple of years (out of warranty), blocking the water flow during the deicing process, ending in ice sheet forming at the bottom of the freezer. They addressed it by redesigning the evacuation tube and provided free/discounted replacement. After that it was just fine.

Stick...we will get the fridge. Lowes price is similar to everyone else's including Home Depot. But a guy at tennis (they all told me since you want a new fridge just buy the thing) said Lowes gives you 5% off if you use their credit card. We are going to Lowes this afternoon.

Lowes may give 10% off if you open a new credit card if you don't already have one--or yours has gone inactive.

Compare similar models of a fridge that have variations in the shelves and drawers. We ended up with ours because the ice maker is fully within the door. You lose some door shelves in the freezer, but in return gained a lot of shelf space on the top shelf that was normally taken by the ice maker.

Also glass shelves that are spill collecting, meaning they have edges around them so small spills don't go running off the edges.

Check the cost to operate on the yellow required label on the device.

My next appliance will be a new Whirlpool Cabrio level washer with the glass top.

. Ours is years old and has some rust around the tray in the top that has the bleach in it. I'd buy today if I could just get a new washer, but I suspect she who must be obeyed will, for unknown reasons, think the dryer has to be replaced and has to "match" other than just being white like the new washer... LOL

She may have a minor point. The new Cabrio will have a much larger capacity than the dryer most likely so if you have a giant load of towels it may be too much for the dryer.

This happens every once in awhile in our downstairs setup since they aren't a matched pair and the dryer is from a set that had a more traditional top loading washer with agitator.

We have a chain up here called No Frills that sounds something like that. They need a $1 coin (a Loonie in Kanada-speak) for a cart deposit which, once you have trained yourself to always have one with you, is fine. Same story with bags, so I bring reusables (they will sell you a good plastic bag for 5 cents until they get banned here next year). They tend to be in older store buildings the big chains have moved on from, so the shopping experience isn't quite as glossy. But I have become quite a fan lately. Their prices on identical items cannot be beat. This week for example they are offering Cracker Barrel cheese slices for $2.79 while their parent, Loblaws, has them on promo at the low low price of $4.99, both pulling the same item from the same distribution center. I now buy the bulk of my staple items there, only going to the other chains for meat, fish, deli and some produce.

Well, this is pretty big. RICO actions are usually quite messy:

    https://media.gm.com/media/us/en/gm/news.detail.html/content/Pages/news/us/en/2019/nov/1120-gm.html
DETROIT — General Motors Co. (NYSE: GM) today announced the filing of a federal racketeering lawsuit against FCA (FCA US LLC and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV) and former FCA executives who have pled guilty in an ongoing federal corruption probe. The lawsuit exposes a multi-year pattern of corruption that FCA used to undermine the integrity of the collective bargaining process and cause GM substantial damages.

At the core of this lawsuit are clear admissions of wrongdoing made by former FCA executives revealed through the continuing criminal investigation by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Eastern District of Michigan.

“This lawsuit is intended to hold FCA accountable for the harm its actions have caused our company and to ensure a level playing field going forward,” said Craig Glidden, GM Executive Vice President and General Counsel.

FCA was the clear sponsor of pervasive wrongdoing, paying millions of dollars in bribes to obtain benefits, concessions, and advantages in the negotiation, implementation, and administration of labor agreements over time.

FCA corrupted the implementation of the 2009 collective bargaining agreement. It also corrupted the negotiation, implementation, and administration of the 2011 and 2015 agreements.

FCA’s manipulation of the collective bargaining process resulted in unfair labor costs and operational advantages, causing harm to GM.

With this lawsuit, GM is seeking to reinforce that bargaining must be free from fraud and corruption. All damages recovered will be invested in the U.S. to benefit GM’s employees and grow jobs.

I think the proceeds should go to paying back the government (tax payers) for the losses on the bailout dollars. Many estimate it to be in the 14 to 17 Billion range, depending on how "fake" of a news source you prefer.

What did you end up buying?

Got the fridge this afternoon at Lowes. .....I know you have all been waiting to hear what happened!
I would have been OK with the $900 model, that is about the same as what we have now. For $100 more you get much nicer shelves, lighter and brighter inside. But, Mrs D really wanted the counter depth model, it is 4 inches less deep, so doesn't stick out much more than the counter. That one cost $1300, and I asked if I could get their CC and get 5% off. The first delivery date available is DEC 5th. A good thing I didn't wait for it to conk out...3 weeks to get a fridge! Sales guy takes my info and says I will get my card in the mail in 7 to 10 days, then I can come in and order. Then we won't get it until mid December.

I said, this is crazy, every other store I go to they give me a CC and I can buy the item right now. He sends me to customer service to get a temporary card. Credit company they use won't approve me....first time in 72 years I have been refused an item on credit. We go over and over my information, she doesn't understand why my Canadian SIN won't come up, and why am I buying a fridge if I am in Canada? I explain I am standing in a store in Florida, that we have a home in Florida, I have a VISA card and Kohls CC on me, what is the problem? She can't approve it....so I ask for the manager. Mrs D says we will buy it somewhere else.....I say to the manager if you give me 5% off and let me put it on my VISA I'll buy it now. He says sure....and we write it up and it gets delivered Dec 6th.

Not to change the subject, but is anyone here a runner?

I've had a pretty steady workout routine for years now, but have always avoided running like the plague because...well...I hate it. I recently started about a month ago to give myself a new challenge and it has been brutal building up my endurance (and I was far from out of shape).

I'm at the point where I can about 2.75 miles, but I'm having a serious amount of trouble getting myself up over 3 miles on my longer run days - either my lower back starts hurting or I just don't have the lung capacity to keep running. I happen to think its probably mental since I feel reasonably confident if someone were chasing me, I'd probably find the strength - its just figuring out to unlock it. Any tips/tricks?

    I’m feeling the pressure.

My Ford dealer is now offering a new 2019 Mustang for $479/mo 0% for 60 months with my trade in. A 2019 GT base lists for about $36,000 and tax brings it up to about $39k. $479/mo for 60 months is about $29k.

So calculating the difference means they are offering me $10k for my trade. According to CarMax my car is worth at least $20k. These are approximations but I feel insulted. Do people still fall for the monthly payment pitch?

    Sergio never worked for GM.

Iacobelli, the FCA labor relations exec named in the suit, abruptly retired from FCA after the 2015 contract was negotiated. GM hired him in a similar role the next year but fired him not long after when the dirt about the 2015 deal started coming out.

Today the UAW President resigned too.

Farmer, people fall for all kinds of schemes, so my guess is yes they do. Your numbers are probably a little off because you are not factoring in interest, which can be pretty significant if they are ripping you off on the interest rate. at 6%, that payment is about a $25,000 loan, so that would be more like $14k trade. still not enough, that is for sure!

Does a cat have an excretory orifice?

Most of the people on here acquire vehicles intelligently, some more than others, but I don't think there are many, if any, "payment buyers." That said, the world is full of them, and we have them to thank for keeping the dealerships sufficiently profitable to, for instance, sell us a Subaru Forester for far less money in CO than I could have gotten it for in AZ. Breld is probably thankful as well.

I agree. More informed buyers get better deals. To make up for that, the dealers have to "cut a fat hog" when they find one, and it seems there are still plenty of them out there.

The only thing is, it is odd that you pay more for a smaller fridge....like a premium for it. The salesman said it is like a little sports car....you pay extra. I said, I know what you mean, the fancier and higher the cost of a dinner....the more the restaurant charges!

But yes, I think in this case small will make the kitchen open up more...and the fridge is very bright and well lit so is great inside. More fridges should be counter deep.

    $1,299.00 Was $1,699.00

Counter depth design - add additional kitchen space with styling that fits virtually flush with the countertop
Exterior ice and water dispenser with EveryDrop™ filtration -access fresh filtered water and ice without ever opening the refrigerator door
In-Door-Ice® storage - get an extra full shelf in the freezer with an ice bin that's been moved to the door
    Good!

There's a lure to the nicer shelves, etc., unless buying basic and don't care. I understand about the
counter depth. Outs sticks out but we need the room.

Did you get the 5-year warranty? That saved us on the service calls for the circuit board that zapped out. And no charge for service call to find out the seeping water was from the plastic waterline to the back of fridge.

Not to change the subject, but is anyone here a runner?

    Absolutely!
But it has been decades since anybody chased me, so I’m probably no help.

    I'm a criminal.

I checked out at Kroger and was buying a cough/cold medicine. I scanned cold med and then scanned the next item. The machine said it was calling for help to verify that I was over 21 LOL.

After that I continued scanning the rest of my things. When I looked at my receipt at home, the item scanned after the cold medicine didn't register--it beeped that it read the item after the cold med but the screen was then covered up by the message to me saying the cashier on the U Check lanes had been called.

One large plastic pack of cherub tomatoes. What should I do?

Eat the evidence before they dispatch the 'receipt police' to your house. :'(

I hate running too! It is great exercise, but I just can’t get into it.

I need to have a goal when exercising. My two outlets are martial arts and volleyball. The goal of the first is always learning something new, and the 2nd is, of course, about winning.

The goal associated with running escapes me. And paying to run in a “race” blows my mind.

My body can't handle real running now (and I ran cross country in school). But we have a fancy elliptical, so I use that instead. Break from work, and I watch TV while doing it to make the time zip by.

we solved the depth issue when we remodeled the kitchen. The cabinetry was custom built around the fridge, so it is cabinet depth. Just deeper cabinets!

Thought I’d stop by and see how everyone was doing. Seems as if logging into Edmunds was turning glitchy a few months ago. So, I quit trying.

    Looks like all’s well.

The gang is all still here... I think we are on Refrigerator discussion part 6.

    I'm pretty sure you're missing a zero.

We prefer side by side, the doors take up less room when they are open. Better for getting by and into the laundry room if one person is in the fridge, and the other is walking through.
Just noticed the door is actually rusting out or something just under the plastic where the ice and water handles are.

You must be hanging around @oldfarmer50 too much. You couldn't possibly have snow plows driving through your kitchen in Florida. :o

But yes, my wife is a runner and loves doing races. She suggested I sign up for a 5k. My response was that I hated running for free, why would I pay to do it?

Warranty is probably a good idea on a fridge....not something you want to take back to get repaired. We didn't even think about it....just glad to get it done, cost me an hour of my life.

I wrote to head office....if they offer me a credit card I will tell them, I'll take one if they give me another 5% off.

Many people do....and that is maybe an easier way to make a living....think accountant, dentist, engineer, etc.

Being a generalist you have to find your passion and figure out what you can do and make that work. There were times when i wished I could get enthusiastic about one subject, but, I couldn't.

Mrs D was running before we met. I told her I was interested in getting started, and that was one thing that we both had in common at first. Fortunately there were many more because once I tried it I found it B-O-R-I-N-G.

Now I get my exercise from a bit of weights and tennis and pickleball. I can do 30 minutes of weights 3X a week. I can watch Judge Jerry or something that doesn't require much thinking, and I put My Kelly Coffee Meyer DVD on ( a small disc player) and I can watch TV while doing basic weights.

Besides, I think running is too hard on feet and legs.

Three of those are in my town and I shop at all of them. They are not Lowes branded stores but that of the Rona chain which Lowes purchased a few years ago. These are much smaller than a Lowes and much like the kind of stores that existed a couple of decades ago. Jam-packed with stuff due to their small footprint. I actually quite like them because of that. It's unfortunate since I prefer shopping at them as opposed to the mega-sized big box HD type stores where you need to pack a lunch before walking a few miles inside them in search of that package of screws you need. There are hopes that the Canadian Home Hardware chain might take over at least one of those locally. Hope so.

I do 3 or 4 5Ks a year....all to raise money for different charities. I wouldn’t call what I do running, though. More something akin to a stroll and and the kind of trot you do when it’s raining and you’re parked 20 feet from the front door.
