I've always heard about how dumb turkeys are. Note I said "heard". I've never given one a problem solving test nor have I once heard otherwise but I'm sure the internet has some data about this but I'm not going to search for it and I'm pretty sure the internet has data on both sides. It doesn't mean anything to me as long as at least one turkey sticks it's neck out at this time of the year and ends up in Mrs. j's oven.

I’ve been looking forward to seeing it. Usually when a movie features a particular car people run right out to buy one. I doubt that many fans will have GT money so what do you think, a boost in sales for Mustangs? I predict higher demand for Shelbys.

The increased costs would be minimal considering it's only going to take 2 to 4 gallons of paint to paint a car.

What snake said is true:
Turkeys are actually quite intelligent. They are really good at geography and can learn the details of really large areas which is especially useful for finding food. Turkeys exhibit problem-solving behavior and are curious and inquisitive animals

So, if people call you a "Turkey", you can tell them thanks for the compliment.

I don’t know how smart turkeys are but I know that they can count. Anything with four legs (other than coyotes) they are indifferent to. Creatures with two legs they avoid. I can drive right up to them with my noisy lawn tractor but as soon as I get off they scatter.

Speaking of smart animals, my wife’s cat is pretty clever. Yesterday I was watching some stupid dog video on the IPad and the cat heard the animals barking. He jumped on my lap and watch the video for awhile before swiping the screen with his paw and turning it off.

Quite the critic.

The extra cost of different colored paint is probably minimal...they shouldn't charge extra, the nicer the cars look the more people will see one and want to buy it.

Paints that use tricoat or tintcoat formulations do cost more to apply and hence would justify a higher price when ordered. They are also more difficult to match when collision repairs are needed. However none of that would apply to a straight metallic formulation where the material cost is likely only marginally higher. Even with that we see several manufacturers charging extra for anything other than non-metallic black, red or white. GM used to offer either regular white or black at no charge along with their corporate silver (usually named Quicksilver or Silver Ice depending on brand) but now they often charge extra for that one as well. Simply an opportunity to increase their margin.

Based on observations building an anecdotal survey of hundreds. To wit: Civic at stoplight for left turn onto interstate ramp. 5-6 cars behind her. She does not turn between oncoming cars with time between there 4-7 seconds? Just sits. Then after holding up line so cars behind won't get to hit ramp until next light cycle, she goes--could see her cell phone held up to her ear as car turned.

Lady driver in Odyssey making sloppy left turn at busy intersection with cigarette in one hand and phone in the other. Turning wheel with cigarette hand.

And I'm sure men have poor driving habits as well. But the empirical evidence says women drivers using handhelds have less regard for safe driving and for paying attention.

The explanation is simple - they cost more to make (both ingredients and application) AND the marketplace is willing to support higher price for this segment. If you look at those metallic finishes up close, those German Premium brand have real subtlety in them, not present in metallic coats in Kia, or Toyota. Lexus, Cadillac and Acura also have color that cost extra.

Perhaps they are, perhaps they are not minimal. You speak like YOU KNOW and you don’t, not as a matter of fact. You only think it’s the case, as based on your general knowledge of “how things work”. Take a real close look at those metallic paints, especially colored ones, on BMWs, or Benz and park a Toyota next to them. Toyota in nice, no doubt, but the depth of finish, certain way it shines on the sun, I can see this does not come at a trivial cost. Don’t know if it is $800, even accounting for a decent margin, but I don’t think it $50, either. The only way to know for sure would be to make them sell for the same and see if they still make them (of course we can’t do that in a free society), or to see their invoices and logs for the compounds and processes involved in the paints (can’t do that, either).

When a driver won't turn between oncoming cars in a 35 zone where cars are typically doing less than 35 and there's more than sufficient time, it's usually that they're preoccupied with _something_ instead of driving.

When the light turns green, and the car doesn't move after a county of "2," it's usually that they're preoccupied with something.

I was the car behind the offending rental car silver Civic. My wife could tell it was a woman driver. AND I could see the phone as the car turned onto the ramp. The light was yellow for the left turn signal (LTS) and I went behind the offender.

Good story about the Sunbird. At least it had flat sides and nice big windows....my kind of car! I forgot a lot of the small cars fell apart at about 50k miles.

Yesterday on I5 near Seattle I saw a woman in a Hyunkia CUV (MN plates, I think, possible rental) obviously reading something in her lap or low on the steering wheel while "driving" - dorking around in the left lane, of course. I also laid on the horn at a Prius (of course!) blatantly camping in the left lane on 405 (highways 405 and 167 are left lane camper havens here) which earned me an evil eye, to which I replied with a disapproving shake of the head.

My current car has the fairly expensive "diamond white" paint. It's dear, but it is a lovely finish, and I can see why MB can charge ~$1600 for this - because they can. It has to cost more than the basic non-metallic white or black, and it has enough appeal to get away with the cost. I think there's a little of both, higher costs but profit center.

I am not talking about the cost of the paint job of a Kia vs that of a Benz but that of a normal Benz vs that same Benz with a $800 or more upgraded paint job. In the later the difference it costs MB to paint that car is minimal. Think of it this way, it takes less 6 gallons of paint to paint a car (depending on size) and look how much more more they charge for the upgraded paint.

Certain colors have always been more expensive than others. In clothing dyes, or on vehicles. I remember reading that red has been a real challenge for car manufacturers to get right and at competitive costs for years. There are similar stories about certain dyes being expensive and hard to do prior synthetic chemistry.

I considered tanzanite blue on my BMW, it was unbelievably beautiful, but it was extra another $1000 over my metallic red, which was $600 over plain white or black. And it required to take 440, not 430, which would be a few grand more. If I had taken 440, I would have taken that tanzanite with it.

When a driver won't turn between oncoming cars in a 35 zone where cars are typically doing less than 35 and there's more than sufficient time, it's usually that they're preoccupied with _something_ instead of driving.

When the light turns green, and the car doesn't move after a county of "2," it's usually that they're preoccupied with something.

I was the car behind the offending rental car silver Civic. My wife could tell it was a woman driver. AND I could see the phone as the car turned onto the ramp. The light was yellow for the left turn signal (LTS) and I went behind the offender.

Ok I was not talking about not making the left turn between cars, but remember some people are a little more timid and/or safety conscious than others. While 7 seconds are clearly enough time 4 seconds is a judgement call that i likely wouldn't take.

I was talking about you being able to see the driver from 5 or 6 cars back which i inferred by the wording of your post. Now that you are clarifying that you were right behind the car which puts your post in a different light.

If a Civic was painted the same red as that TLX, it was a respray. The TLX paint is a similar metallic premium paint like on my ATS or Mazda’s Soul Red. Civics usually offered a solid red that isn’t metallic.

Based on observations building an anecdotal survey of hundreds. To wit: Civic at stoplight for left turn onto interstate ramp. 5-6 cars behind her. She does not turn between oncoming cars with time between there 4-7 seconds? Just sits. Then after holding up line so cars behind won't get to hit ramp until next light cycle, she goes--could see her cell phone held up to her ear as car turned.

Lady driver in Odyssey making sloppy left turn at busy intersection with cigarette in one hand and phone in the other. Turning wheel with cigarette hand.

And I'm sure men have poor driving habits as well. But the empirical evidence says women drivers using handhelds have less regard for safe driving and for paying attention.

For men it's guys in construction rigged pick ups. They always seem to be phoning in bids or supervising the crew fro the cab of their truck. Instead of sitting at lights they run them or do some other nonsense while moving.

The explanation is simple - they cost more to make (both ingredients and application) AND the marketplace is willing to support higher price for this segment. If you look at those metallic finishes up close, those German Premium brand have real subtlety in them, not present in metallic coats in Kia, or Toyota. Lexus, Cadillac and Acura also have color that cost extra.

Yes it's simple, the added costs are very minimal so it's really not that. It's that people are willing to pay for it. People tend to associate cost with quality. Payless proved that.

Perhaps they are, perhaps they are not minimal. You speak like YOU KNOW and you don’t, not as a matter of fact. You only think it’s the case, as based on your general knowledge of “how things work”. Take a real close look at those metallic paints, especially colored ones, on BMWs, or Benz and park a Toyota next to them. Toyota in nice, no doubt, but the depth of finish, certain way it shines on the sun, I can see this does not come at a trivial cost. Don’t know if it is $800, even accounting for a decent margin, but I don’t think it $50, either. The only way to know for sure would be to make them sell for the same and see if they still make them (of course we can’t do that in a free society), or to see their invoices and logs for the compounds and processes involved in the paints (can’t do that, either).

Most automotive paint is expensive if you can believe the car restoration shows I watch. I mean, we’re talking $200-500 a gallon! Fortunately, it doesn’t take that much to paint a whole car from what I’ve seen.

It would be interesting to compare both the raw paint cost plus the preparation done to various car brands. As we all know (because we’re experts at everything) preparation is 90% of car painting cost. Maybe upscale brands look better because they do more sanding or other hand work before they paint.

A few years ago my friend bought a new Honda CRV finished in Urban Titanium Metallic.
When she had to list the vehicle color on a form to get a resident parking sticker there was only a small one-word space to fill in the blank. We agreed that Urban is not a color and Titanium didn't really work either.

I said that it's more like a dark grey and she said it was brown. We argued back and forth and then went outside to look at it in the light. The shady side looked grey and the other side looked brown in direct sun. She said " See? Brown." Whatever.

Urban Titanium Metallic would probably be a form of gray as titanium is a code word for silver.......Kona Coffee Metallic probably has brown in it.
Interesting, they want you to tell them what color your car is. Might be hard to condense Mountain Air Metallic into one word. I wonder if Honda charges extra for those metallic colors.

We rearranged the family room during the minor remodel(new flooring, essentially). The seating distance has increased so we need a 65" TV. My wonderful bride told me to get whatever TV I wanted as well as a UHD BD player. All the reviewers seem to be waxing ecstatic over the LG C9, but I'm open to other suggestions. On the BD player front I'm considering the Panasonic DP-UB820 as well as a bargain pick- the Sony UBP-X800M2.
Thoughts?

Those new OLED LGs are supposed to be outstanding though all I know is what I read online. I do have firsthand experience with Sony and it has not been good. I have a Sony Bluray player and it has failed to impress (its Smart functions are a bad joke though you probably won’t be using those). Just over the last few weeks a 3 year old Sony flatscreen that is set up downstairs crapped out without reason and is unrepairable. My first HD tv was also a Sony that only lasted a bit over 3 years as well. I have sworn off all Sony products now.

That Honda paint looks like one of the non-colours that Mazda and several other manufacturers seem to love. Not really gray, not really brown, not really green, not really blue. Sort of like Metallic Mud.

The form was similar to this one I found online. Long fill in lines for name, email, etc.
Vehicle color space is much smaller I guess because they expect a simple red, blue, black, silver.


Until after I looked at the Honda color chart I didn't realize there actually are blue obsidian stones.

so, saw Ford vs. Ferrari today. Excellent movie. I liked it a lot. even my wife and her friend (far from car people) really liked it. The car stuff (driving and spotting) was well done, as were the racing scenes. And the movie part was enjoyable. I recommend it.

I have a Sony BluRay player that's several years old. No real complaints. I decided to go ahead and buy the Panasonic player; it received excellent reviews and is about as good as you can get without spending over $1,000. I was thinking about an Oppo player, forgetting that they shut their doors a while back. Now I just need to find a decent TV.

I will add that the one aspect that might upset the die hard stick people, they used the same basic shot quite a bit of a quick clutch and upshift to drop the revs. might not be exactly accurate, but made the point!

OF50, good news...my interview went pretty well on Wednesday at Enterprise. Before we were done, the guy who interviewed me said I was hired as the #5 driver of the new team as long as my driving record was o k, no drug test even needed. He even agreed to my taking a few days off the last week of December. Got home and there was an email with papers for me to fill out. After some phone tag late Thursday and early Friday, got another email last night that the background check was all complete. But, the head of the hiring department who as been sending me the emails is now out of the office until the 25th. So, not sure if I'm 100% hired!
The schedule is Tuesday, Wednesday & Friday 7:30 to 6 but he asked if I'd be available for more which I said of course. My team with consist of a lead and 10 drivers going between Palm Beach, Broward and northern Dade counties. Even though I'll be making slightly less per hour, the absence of any tolls and the reduced amount of petrol will more than make up for that difference.
Plan to stay on at Hertz until the end of the year so I can get the small bonus they give since I've worked for it. Also would have no problem giving Hertz a couple of days a week in 2020 as long as my spinal issues behave and if Enterprise keeps me down to those 3 days. Again though, need to keep in mind that there's a limit as to how much social security will let me earn/year before they reduce what they give me now. It's already crazy low due to my getting a civil service pension so don't want to make it go even lower. And now that I get Medicare, that $100/month I get is already gone plus I have to pay $35 more/month to pay for it! Ridiculous really!!

Congratulations Sandy, I hope you enjoy your new position. When I got hired my official hours were something like 6:30 to 5:30 but I’ve never worked those hours. I work 5:30 until there’s no more work left so usually about 12-14 hours a day 2 days a week. It’s pretty fluid, some guys come in about 5:00, others not until almost 7:00.

If you plan on being there awhile join the 401k and get 3% extra with a tax deferral. You also get profit sharing if you work over 1000 hours a year. I think it’s about 4.5% of your pay so about $400-500. Never saw a part-timer get those benefits.

I don’t know how your pension effects your social security but I think the earnings limit for 2019 is about $17k if you’re below full retirement age.

got a nice surprise in the mail yesterday. A check for $75 showed up. From a class action settlement, that I did not even remember responding to (though I usually do since might be free money!) Apparently this one had something to do with Raymour and Flanagan furniture texting people without permission (I am sure I got some of those, but thought nothing of it, because I bought stuff there and get robo calls inviting me in for VIP events to get a free gift).

Seems like a hefty payout. I wonder if it was one of those where they had a pool to split over anyone in the class that responded, and not many did?
