Gratuities $14.50 a day per person???????

Too high or too low? 7-day cruise gives you basically 100 bucks per person, which doesn't seem outrageous to me, but I have no clue how much it should be. I've never been on a cruise and I'm not going any time soon.

Now, remember it's a "$100 value", which probably means the crew will likely get a fraction of this number, as it's often the case when you get something "free X value" . They'll be lucky to get 50 bucks.

Gratuities $14.50 a day per person???????

Really tough to know. Much like a lease, options (room location) change things drastically, and there are all kinds of fees added after the fact.

Perks are iffy. Are gratuities worth it? Like you indicated, they are dictating a cost that you may or may not agree with. Am I spending $50/day for my family tipping folks on the cruise? Doubtful. The drink package may be worth it to lushes, but doesn't even come close to folks like us who don't care for alcohol.
Good point, $71 a day for alcohol.....I would never get my money out of that one!

at the price they charge for drinks, people do. mostly the ones that go on cruises to eat 6k calories/day, and drink themselves blotto every night. Not everyone does, but some people do.

Reminds me of when I visited Disneyworld/Epcot (first and likely only time) a few years ago. We stayed on-site, and although the hotel wasn't insanely expensive for the convenience alone, the on-site dining was definitely priced to suit the locale. There were meal packages that seemed insane, until you added it up - if you were going to eat 3 squares there, the packages would save you something. I remember I bought a drink pass that had me running in the black after 3 drinks per day (non-alcoholic).

Also in that is another reason I'd be leery to go on an all-inclusive cruise, I'd eat too much, and wouldn't seek any way to burn it off (I generally avoid the gym on vacation, because it is a vacation). When I travel, I usually "treat" myself to a breakfast buffet if I am at a nicer hotel, and even then I overdo it, and then try to balance it out by skipping lunch.

If you remember, the driver side seat bolster on my Legacy was going bad and the dealer didn't want to fix it. After a little persuasion from Subaru they decided to replace the seat covering.

I took it out yesterday morning to have it done. When I went out to go home this greeted me.

I went back inside and told them that it wasn't done. I could see the car inside the shop for over an hour so it was a little puzzling. Then I looked at the paperwork and it said the *passenger* seat. They then replaced the drivers side. Now I have 2 matching new seats.

How could someone be 2 feet away and not see where the drivers seat was bad (as in that picture), but would replace the passenger seat that had no flaws?

I mentioned it to my daughter and she summed it up pretty well. "That's some special kind of stupid".

Apparently, all of us here who like our German Audi's, BMW's, and Mercedes only do so because we are jerks and high-status symbol seekers.

Couldn't have anything to do with liking superior cars, now could it?

As far as I know, I haven't seen data showing German cars are more likely to kill people or other cars, nor seen that insurance is astronomical for those reasons as compared to other cars.

    So fake news?

But not all who drive high-end cars get painted by the same brush. Researchers found that conscientious consumers, defined as being respectable, ambitious, reliable and well-organized, were also drawn to high-status automobiles. That’s likely because such people attach importance to high quality and sending a message to others that they themselves are reliable.

There could be a few different groups who like luxury European cars. Status seekers, people who like fine workmanship, jerks who have the money and want to show off....to name a few.

One thing for sure is that certain makes and or models attract certain types of people, some multiple types of people. Those looking for a status symbol wont be looking at Honda Civics, so yes MB's and BMW's will drawn more than their fair share of social climbing jerks. That's not saying that's the only type of person they attract.

I remember hearing about that book many years ago...eerie.

Here’s also something eerie. Monday when I went to work I got the urge to drive the cargo van instead of the Kia. Don’t know why.

I got down the street and BLAM! A deer ran out of the dark and bounce off the front of me. It ran or rolled off into the woods. I got to work where there was light and found that I had no noticeable damage. Express vans have some hefty bumpers.

If I had driven the Kia I’m sure I would have busted a headlight or crinkled a fender.

Seems I got a warning from the great beyond.👹

Those cruise quotes are tough to do a compare and contrast with. Depends on the ship...is it an old crusty one, or a new(ish) one with more modern design and activities?

There are all sorts of travel agents and sights that obscure exactly what your getting for what they’re charging. Kind of like buying a mattress. The same mattress made by Seally will have a different model number at each different store you go to so you can not do a like for like pricing comparison.

It sounds like you have a good agent. My Mom's agent was not so good.

The announcer mentioning it was that time in the game where Montana threw a touchdown in the back of the endzone was the end of the 49ers chances. There's no Montana on the 49ers roster in 2020.
True - and wasn't the sinking of the Titanic just awful?
My 6-year old is fascinated by the Titanic story through the James Cameron movie. She's been into that movie lately, through the miracle of digital recordings.

She doesn't understand yet why "those" people would let women and children drown or freeze or both.
There is a book called "Futility, or the wreck of the Titan" About a ship called the Titan, the largest ship built that hits an iceberg on an April night in the north Atlantic. The story almost identically mirrors the Titanic and was written 14 years before the titanic sunk.

A better Titanic movie was "A Night to Remember".

If you had blamed-up Mrs. @oldfarmer50's Kia you would have been compost for her flower pots. :'(

Reminds me of when I hit a German shepherd type dog that ran out in front of my 77 Cutlass Supreme Brougham. I broadsided it with the front bumper. I checked and no other damage visible. Real bumpers in those days. Chrome. Shock absorbers holding them...
    But, how was the dog?

In my (admittedly anecdotal) experience, Audi seems to have surpassed BMW for owners of their cars driving like jerks. But you can find jerks and jackasses behind the wheel of any make and model.

I think I have noticed "themes" of inconsiderate drivers on some days... especially when I am out cycling. Some days it's poorly driven Fusions, or poorly driven pickups, and the BMW drivers I encounter are the ones that make the cleanest passes. Sometimes even Audi drivers give me plenty of room.

I do, indeed! Most of those on line travel sites want your name, email, phone number before handing out a "quote". Then, they inundate you with all kind of unsolicited phone calls, emails and snail mail. Ask me how I know!

For all intents and purposes, the cruise fares don't change from booking directly with the cruise line to one of those on line agencies. If you find a good agent, may times they'll know of travel agency promos that cruise lines offer, and be able to get you some on board credit and some perks thrown in to get you to book with them. Mine even gives me cash back based on the total amount spent to book with her.

Several years ago, Top Gear moved the jerky driver award from BMW to Audi, so your observations align with others. Those two along with a few others (large pickups, box trucks/vans, upmarket SUVs/CUVs) seem to be intentionally bad, while others are obliviously bad.

    Thanks, @imidazol97

Mine has been slow (at least for me), but I do have two solid leads (from referrals) just need to give it time to develop now that both companies have budgets approved.

One would be about a 90 mile round trip commute (against traffic), the other would be a road warrior position.

It amazes me how long it takes to get hired these days.

I am still enjoying it a bit, I must have had more burnout than I realized. I do fear some cabin fever within a month or so though. I am also in touch with old co-workers who tell me things are even worse back on the battleground, so I am not feeling bad. This will end up being a blessing in disguise.

I am in the multiple interview process with a couple positions I initially applied for in November - seems things move slowly this time of year, both involve people out of the office a bit right now. No idea about compensation or perks yet, but both could be interesting, which is worth something - so far I am only pursuing things that look like they might keep me going, and I've only applied locally. Panic mode is a ways away yet.

I hope you have some stuff in the pipeline too - it's out there, some people just take their time.

If someone considers a driver a jerk for simply driving faster than they do (a maniac as George Carlin once said), then I can see why Audi would be #1.

However, while I think speed limits are silly, I always think people should drive safely according to conditions. It just seems drivers with lower comfort speeds don't like faster drivers or take offense to their manhoods from faster drivers, and then call them douches or jerks.

I can guarantee you that a '19 Versa at 70 MPH is much more dangerous than my A4 at 85 MPH. Not everything comes down to weight and speed, as any energy figure you come up with multipled by zero collisons, is still zip, zero, zilch, nada, 0.00.

As such, I believe the true jerks that ignore traffic laws (other than speeding) should have the book thrown at them, I wouldn't mind massive penalties for the following:

    1) Impeding traffic
    2) Improper use of the left/passing lane
    3) Failure to Obey Signage
    4) Lack of Turn Signal Use
    5) Unsafe freeway merging
    6) Violating another's right-of-way

Some people say it's the speeders that also fail to use turn signals. My mission is to change that perception. Speeders should definitely be signaling every time!
