I agree. When I was still working, I had an all-in-one laser printer from Brother that the company outfitted my home office with. It’s a beast…maybe 10 years old. When I retired I asked them if they wanted me to ship it back to them. They told me to just keep it given how much it would cost to ship back.
It’s a high zoot model with laser color printing, automatic duplexing, and even a fax (remember those?). Consumables lasted a long time, but up front costs were high. Plus, Brother quit supporting it, so firmware/software became glitchy, but I worked around it.
About a month after I retired, it started leaving streak marks on the paper. Cleaned it. No dice! To fix it would have cost more than it was worth. So, it’s sitting in my upstairs office, unused. And, I keep procrastinating dragging it downstairs to donate or trash it.

After about a week I started noticing a smell in my new (to me) Chrysler Pacifica. Then yesterday it sat in the hot sun for about an hour, and there it is, the smell of stale cigarette smoke. Which doesn’t surprise me, it was a rental in it’s previous life. So today I am engaged in interior cleaning. First up, check the cabin air filter, which appears to be original and definitely stinks. Three auto parts stores within one mile of my house, checked all 3, not one cabin air filter for a 2019 Pacifica. Oreilly’s, Advance, and AutoZone, no joy.
Back home, check with Amazon. They have several, with free Prime shipping, but the earliest I can get one is Friday, 3 days out. I can get air filters, or oil filters, many different brands, arrive tomorrow. But not a cabin air filter. The obvious assumption is that people don’t buy cabin air filters. So I took the old one, blew it out with compressed air, sprayed it down with Fabreze, and stuck it back in temporarily.
Next step is to dump about a pound of baking soda on all of the carpets and then scrub the leather seats and all of the hard surfaces. Has anyone here tried that Odor-X product from Turtle Wax? It sounds promising for cleaning out the HVAC system.

I don’t have an answer for the Odor-X thingy but a dealer might have the cabin air filter. Probably pricey but you won’t have to wait for it to ship.

I have found the headliner will trap smell. In addition to vacuuming I have sprayed Tuff-Stuff on a cloth and carefully cleaned the headliner and followed up with a clean damp towel to go over the headliner once more. My 01 Aurora that I bought used had that smell. By cleaning all surfaces as you are the smell was eliminated. Tedious work indeed.

Even though we have no smoking stickers all over our cars, customers insist on trying to sneak one by. Maybe they’re so rich that they don’t mind several hundreds of dollars extra for clean up. The other day we were told to bring several cars to a detail shop, a new one on me. I asked why they were being detailed rather than just clean them at the office and the agent said “you’ll see why”. Well, the car I got reeked of pot smoke so bad that the interior was sticky. That plus the garbage from the renter’s munchie attack just about made me sick.

Car rental companies are buying low mileage used cars, which they never did before.
Manheim index shows used car prices are 52% higher than they were a year ago!
Manheim’s midmonth report in April said that the rental cars coming to auction had an average of 79,000 miles on them, up 54% compared with a year ago (less than 40000)
Rental rates are high....We’re seeing average rates in Florida of $100 a day, $200 a day in Hawaii and $600 a day in Puerto Rico

They're relatively cheap. I've got one I think I paid $40 for off Amazon. Used it in my previous Cobra. Although the previous owner quit smoking a long time ago, he still had smoked in it the first year he owned it. And, even 20+ years later, I could still faintly smell cigarette smoke in it. 10 minutes with the ionizer in the interior with the top up and the windows closed and all traces of cig smoke were totally eliminated. Smelled fresh (and not musty like an old car), too.
I used some Armorall Freshfx($5 for a small spray can) to fix the nasty musty smell from the vents on startup.
Spray from the outside with the A/C running. Applied twice a week apart, just in case. Still have a bunch left.

The guy in the video is unknown to me, but he did seem to be knowledgeable in this area, and he said the only thing that was really going to work was an ozone generator. He recommended this model:
Man, cleaning that headliner is going to be a lot of work. While running down information via google on getting rid of cigarette smell in a car, I read one article that recommended taking the car to a professional detailer. The article made mention of that remedy costing "up to $100", which gave me a laugh. The last time I got an estimate for a real professional detail, it was $300 exterior, $175 interior.
Maybe I can get one of the neighborhood kids (early teens) to do that headliner for $20 or so. Worth a try anyway, as I think doing that much reaching overhead and squirming around might throw my back permanently out of alignment. I've already lined up a guy to do the brakes, a pro who lives down the street from me offered to do all 4 corners for $150. When I was younger, I wouldn't have dreamed of paying someone to do a simple job like brakes. But I'm getting older, and spending that much time stooped over, getting up and down over and over, does not sound like a good idea.

The youtube videos put up by professional detailers classify the "dryer sheets" as an "old wives tale" which does not work. Same category as coffee beans or apple slices. I have no idea, but I'm going with the advice of the pros. Which, in my experience, is usually a very good idea.
And yes, I ordered the ozone generator. But all of the guides which recommended the ozone generator made it clear that EVERYTHING had to be cleaned first. Which I have been doing today, and everything is now clean, with the exception of the headliner. I simply did not think of it until @sda made mention.
That's one thing I liked about the OdorXit product.
Our long time friend was in an assisted care facility where one level was people living in a small double home. She got into one but it was saturated with smoke odor. I recommended the OdorXit based on having used their pet odor enzyme product. The insides of cabinets around drawers in places that could be reached for cleaning were reeking of this cigarette smoke that the elderly guy produced before having to move into a fully assisted living level.
It worked because the product saturates everywhere to destroy the odor-causing part of the deposits. On a car there're layers of the oils with the smell in behind and inside areas that can't be reached.
I've wondered if the ozone generators are good for the rubber parts on a car. I know they didn't recommend refrigerators and freezers in a garage with your cars because of the ozone from the electric motors at that time.
Printers. Laser printers are nice. I had an HP for my Apple computer back in the day that communicated by SCSI. I didn't buy the Apple version of that same product. It finally died.
I had a couple of ink jets, but the Epson gave me fits and the HP was expensive to use. I decided to replace and start over.
Microcenter had a cheaper Canon with scan and copy feature in an inkjet. And I saw a Pantum laser printer
that could print duplex with hand turning the page over. Cheap. I bought both for little over $100.
The Pantum recently quit and I didn't know if it was the toner cartridge was out or the printer died.
I'd buy another at $79, instead of the earlier $59. It uses Samsung cartridges.

From the article I linked earlier in the Washington Post:
The Environmental Protection Agency, which recommends against buying home air-filtering equipment that generates ozone, reviewed numerous scientific studies and concluded that ozone concentrations that do not exceed public health standards have little likelihood of removing odors. But the EPA warned that concentrations high enough to work can cause damage to plants, rubber, electrical wire coatings, fabrics, and the dyes and pigments in some artwork, in addition to causing health problems.
But further down in the same article:
To prevent damage to the plastic coating on electrical wires, trained technicians run an ozone generator for only two to four hours at a setting that is safe for wiring.
I know the pros do this, and the cars don't seem to fall apart or suffer melted insulation on the wiring, so I think it should be safe. The recommendation for cars seems to be about 1 hour.

Enterprise has dabbled in the auction market before all this. When Subaru refused to sell at an acceptable price they bought a bunch of low mile one year old units at the auction. Usually cars they send to the auction are lease returns which tend to be high milage. No one knows how much Enterprise makes because they are privately held. I can say they’ve been pretty good to me, regardless.

I was looking at one of those allergen eliminators about 6 mos ago. Ended up with one that fits in the ducting that comes out of my HVAC system. Not an ionizer but an intense lite (blue) that the air runs through before getting to my registers. I know having an annual spring time sneezing fit and headaches has been eliminated. Allegedly it eliminates anything viral that’s airborne, too. Can’t attest to that, but I know I didn’t have any sort of virus over the last 6 mos, either.
Wasn’t cheap ($750 installed) but IMHO, well worth it.

Of all the new and used cars I've purchased, only once have I been sent a thank you gift. It was a beautiful plant that I nurtured for years. It was when I purchased my first and least expensive new car, an 88 VW Fox GL w/ac, stickered $8165. I'm surprised they didn't send me a nasty gram for my trade in of an 85 Renault Alliance DL convertible that loved the dealer's service dept.

I’ve never received a thank you gift for any car. Our Realtor did give a $200 gift card to Kirklands after we settled on both houses. I thought that was a nice touch.

How much you want to bet she'd make him sign a prenup?
If I were worth 146 billion, or half of that amount, I wouldn't even go on a first date without a signed and notarized prenup.
Great product. They have various types for various odors.

They specifically address how to handle vehicle smoke odor with a 10 g. AQM pack in your car overnight (with a small fan to circulate the air).

Plus, I don't come with all the baggage that Bill came with. I don't have all that money to worry about.
I used some Armorall Freshfx($5 for a small spray can) to fix the nasty musty smell from the vents on startup.
Spray from the outside with the A/C running. Applied twice a week apart, just in case. Still have a bunch left.
I found this video on youtube,
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i5LDXk8ov_E
The guy in the video is unknown to me, but he did seem to be knowledgeable in this area, and he said the only thing that was really going to work was an ozone generator. He recommended this model:
https://www.youtube.com/redirect?event=video_description&redir_token=QUFFLUhqbmRSbWNGcWU4UzFFSTViSTZrb2VMRU9jRWJ6d3xBQ3Jtc0tsVHVHQ0g5OWpoNUJIMHVWSHFWWjJMR1RkbFZyaUdxWFBGS1RPOGY5bkxlV0ZBeGZUMmt5TG0wcktpdHM4a1VQSThhb1JfYk5GLUFxNlFaUkRENFNGdUtOeDk2XzJDMmE4YnpYeElrWlNOOHRpem5taw&q=https://amzn.to/2Y013En
Which was only $49, and had good reviews on Amazon, so I just went ahead and ordered one.
I also found this article in the Washington Post which pretty much said the same thing, only an ozone generator was going to get the job done.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/home/its-tough-to-get-rid-of-cigarette-smells-but-an-ozone-treatment-can-do-it/2018/11/11/e0d64dfa-dedc-11e8-85df-7a6b4d25cfbb_story.html
And a "thank you" to @sda for the tip on the headliner, I had not thought of that.
If the dealer that sold me the DieselGate Audi knew anything about removing smoke, he must have forgot about the one I bought.

Leave some dryer sheets under the seats.

@henryn,
If you are buying that ionizer, try that first. It seemed to work for graphicguy.
2014 Malibu 2LT, 2015 Cruze 2LT,
2014 Malibu 2LT, 2015 Cruze 2LT,
From the article I linked earlier in the Washington Post:
But further down in the same article:
I know the pros do this, and the cars don't seem to fall apart or suffer melted insulation on the wiring, so I think it should be safe. The recommendation for cars seems to be about 1 hour.
IIRC, the "old wife" who suggested that was isell or one of the other salesmen on this forum.
My E24 had been owned by a smoker, after about a month the smell was gone- but from the get-go once the S38 came on song I didn't care what the PO smoked...

I just noticed that my audio system in the G90 is a Lexicon (subsidiary of Harman) powered by a 900 watt amplifier (stored in my trunk) with 12 amplified channels through 17 speakers (4 mid-woofers, 1 subwoofer, 7 midrange speakers and 5 tweeters). The quality and performance of the audio system is the best I have ever experienced in any automobile including Mercedes and BMW and Lexus. It includes “Harman Quantum Logic Surround Sound Technology.”
The recently updated Sirius/XM digital satellite signal includes high definition surround sound. It’s like sitting at Lincoln Center and listening to a philharmonic orchestra or like sitting in the front row center seat at a rock concert. Magnificent audio reproduction with graphic equalizers. 🤓

And the Bengals. I’d become a Cincinnati Sports Team mogul. And would bring championships and more World Series rings to the area. I’d wear Reds vests all around town and buy another red car with red interior.
Melinda….I’m still waiting by the phone!
