For the first time since I retired I have a sum owing to Justin and the Feds this year. That is solely because of them. Up here when you turn 65 there are two federal pensions that kick in. One is the Canada Pension Plan, which you contribute to with a co-payment taken from every paycheck you earned while working. Most private or public pensions take that into account and reduce the amount they pay you after you turn 65 to offset that sum you will be receiving. It is slightly galling but is no secret, although a few benevolent public institutions do not do that, so their retirees can actually receive more in retirement when they did while employed.
The second federal payment is called Old Age Security, which everyone qualifies for once they hit 65. This one is somewhat odd in that it is not well-understood, is (I discovered) adjusted depending upon your income, and was actually not mentioned in the pre-retirement session I went to some years ago. I had to do some hunting for it on the federal website last year and learned that I had to apply for it, so I did that. I remember the response was that they had received my info but they could not tell me what I would be receiving and that I should wait for the first monthly deposit to appear in my bank account to see that. When it did, it was a few hundred dollars, not a significant amount. It was small enough that I assumed they were treating it the same as my CPP payments, where I had them withhold 30% from each month's payment for taxes.
Turns out that declaration only applied to CPP and not OAS, and you had to find another area on the fed website to get a deduction applied to it. Grrr. So now I will get a couple of hundred a month instead, but at least I won't have a tax bill next year.
Between my state pension, social security and my Enterprise gig I make more working 20 hours a week than I did working 60-70 hours doing two jobs. When I was young I could have used that extra money.

I’m repairing a section of the wood fence in my back yard. I did the left and right sides, and half of the back about 5 years ago. This one stretch was in pretty good shape, so I left it alone at that time. Now 2 of the posts have rotted and broken, so here we go. The price of lumber is a lot higher now. The cedar fence pickets are about 50% more, the pressure treated posts are twice as much, and the pressure treated 2x4’s are 3 times as expensive. I just spent $300 at Home Depot for materials to rebuild about 20 feet of fence.
I was at Lowes last evening. A 4x8 sheet of 3/4" T&G OSB is $101.

@driver100 How is Wordle going for you? I got maybe 1/2 of them or fewer. I've done many in the wordle archives page. With no hints, I sometimes just blast on through one putting in dumb words to see what the answer is quickly. The more I see, the more hopeless some of those would have been for me to solve.
A question for those receiving Social Security. Do you get a physical check? It looks to me like you have to get a check before you can sign up for direct deposit.

@cdnpinhead, How did you set up DD? I went to do in online and it wants a check#. I won't start getting payments until June.
isn't it just setting up direct deposit, like on your tax return for refunds? Just have to put in your account and routing #s and should be good to go.

Imid.....I would like to do at least a Wordle a day but my days are too full for some unknown reason. I play tennis or pickleball 6 days a week, and started table tennis on top of that, 2 or 3 times a week. I wasn't into sports until I hit 60 years old, and now I discovered it. Mrs D100 does the new wordle and archives, she is really good at it. I've only played about 6, have got them all, some 3, 4 5 times. There is some luck involved, depending how many letters show up the first time. I find the first word you use is risky, I think it is best to only use one vowel as those you can figure out. I'll try to play more soon. MrsD100 went back home....I am staying in Florida until April 2nd. Good luck with Wordle.
Just an update on the ceramic coating I had put on my G90 earlier this month. The shine and finish on the car are awesome and when it rains, the water just beads up and drips to the ground. I just don’t have the car washed in a car wash place - I have a guy wash the car by hand using a mild soap and soft cloths once a week for the same cost as an exterior automatic car wash.
It actually looks better than the day I bought it. So far, it was definitely worth the cost. Car turns one year old next week and just hit 5000 miles on the odometer today.
Are you telling us you put mustard on hot dogs instead of ketchup?
jmonroe
We all need to normalize ketchup on a hot dog. Not that I don’t like some spicy brown mustard but ketchup is the best.
Yeah yeah … I know it’s sacrilege especially in Pittsburg
I thought it was sacrilege world wide.
I remember seeing a food show on TV about a famous hot dog shop in Chicago (pretty sure the name of the place is Superior Hot Dog Shop) where they won’t put ketchup on a hot dog. If you want ketchup they give you a few packs but they refuse to ruin one of their hot dogs with ketchup.

That would be just about any hotdog place in Chicago. Some places won't even give you any ketchup if you ask for it.

It's the government giving you back your money after you give it an interest free loan.
I had a large refund last year. Too large. All messed up by the dropping of the required RMD. And then the 401K company messed up big time so a fed tax was withheld on little withdrawn from the account.
This year I set up fed tax withholding to take out more than I had owed the last year. But I just got around to running all my numbers. Looks like capital gains ran wild last year, and I am going to owe a little extra. I'm entering all the stuff into TurboTax and will see if it says I have to pay a penalty or if I escape by one of the esclusions.
My first time for TurboTax. Son kept telling me I should use it. This year I have to use it just to see how it handles the foreign taxes and whether it does 1116. Son got free TT from Fidelity, but they still won't offer me that.

I hate form 1116, usually it's a little old blue haired lady with a very small investment portfolio where the 1099 DIV has $3 in dividends and lists foreign tax paid as 51 cents.

The car knows if the key is inside or not. You can't start the car if the key is not physically inside it. If you exit with the key on you and engine running it honks the horn a couple of times. I think you can lock the key in the vehicle using the inside door lock button.
My RDX started with the fob sitting on the roof, but the doors were still open so that could have made it easier. Once the doors had been closed for a few seconds it gave an alert "KEY FOB NOT DETECTED" but continued to run. If I have the fob where it belongs in my pocket, and get out of the car with the engine running, I'll usually get a a rapid beep for maybe 1 second.
The outcome of the successful rooftop start was posted here, IIRC. Not an adventure I want to repeat!
I got over 10 years out of the OEM battery in the Club Sport. It was working fine but I replaced it as a precaution as BMW batteries of that vintage had a reputation for working fine and then suddenly going Tango Uniform with no warning.
I got 9 years and 147K miles out of the OEM battery in my V70. Figured that had something to do with being in the back, not exposed to all the heat under the hood.
OEM battery in the Jetta went just past 7 years, but considerably lower mileage. The RDX was already on a replacement battery when I bought it.

If you can manage to get your taxable income under $81K, your capital gain and dividend tax rate is ZERO!
That's almost impossible if you are on SSA and taking RMDs, though. I'm in the sweet spot, right now.
Sounds like I need to go to reeducation school for Wordle.
Hopefully governments will put in place rehab programs for addicts of that accursed thing.
Wordle expands the mind...makes you think better, might even help prevent dementia or Alzheimer's. It is better than a lot of other addictions. And someone doing Wordle doesn't interfere with your quality of life. I don't play games much, crosswords, cards, dominoes, mah jahn, bridge, euchre etc., but I don't care if people want to play them. Now, back to discussing condiments on hotdogs......something people can relate to.
And someone doing Wordle doesn't interfere with your quality of life.
People can play it all they want. What greatly diminishes quality of life are the hordes of players who feel compelled to post their daily results online and discuss them with others incessantly. That is what the rehab is for.
