One problem with comparing state and local taxes is some states fund services like schools differently

Every year, a local community (Lebanon, OH) has a blues festival tied to a car show. After the rain cleared, my son and I headed there. Parked in a public parking lot. After 4-5 hours of looking at vintage muscle cars and listening to some live blues, we were sweaty and spent.

Come to the parking lot, and there’s a kid riding around the parking lot in his bicycle (12 y.o., maybe). I was walking to the car and the kid saw me very towards my Accord. He said…”if that’s your car, some guy backed into you about 5 minutes ago”. Well, at first, I didn’t see anything. Then, upon further inspection, I saw this.

I asked if he got the license number (NO!). That means I’m coming out of pocket. Hoping the parking sensors are OK. Thinking they just remove the bumper, skim it, and repaint it. $700-$1,000? What say you?

Sorry to see you got hit.

Filled up with PUG at my local Costco yesterday - $4.16 per gallon. That’s a drop of over $1.00 per gallon from late June.

It is my understanding that the reason for the drop is due to a significant reduction in demand. Demand has dropped over 1 million barrels per day here in the US - was 9.8 million and now 8.7 million.

Problem is that as demand increases due to lower prices, cost per gallon will go back up.

The cheapest RUG near me is $3.87 which is actually 4 cents higher than last week. Most PUG is between $4.80-.90 with one outlier @$4.69 but 50 miles away.

I’m about 100 miles from Philly right now and 1060 the news station doesn’t come in clearly at all.

Doubtful these crappy tuners of today would pick up those far away stations like the old ones did.

I’ve noticed substantial differences in reception between brands. Weather conditions seem to have an effect too. This week I noticed usually reliable cars were fading out 30-50 miles sooner than usual.

I don’t remember last when I listened to an AM station but do not suggest the AM band be deleted from new vehicles.

A good PDR guy who does paint may be able to take care of it, barring any alignment or internal issues.

That stinks. Small world, yesterday my mom helped a friend have a yard sale, so she parked down the street. Nutty woman tried some weird parking maneuver and smacked my mom's car - being a Camry, of course at the rear bumper corner, leaving a big indentation. Of course, no license, no insurance, etc. Her car is heading for 20 years old now, so she isn't looking to spend her deductible and risk a rate hike to repair it, I told her try the hot water and push from the inside trick and see what happens.

I often hear that story from other states. You can’t even register you car in NY without both license and insurance. How do they get away with that?

I know some of the criminal elements around here drive with fake or stolen plates but they get busted when caught.

@graphicguy Grrrr! Its sad that the person who did that didn’t have the integrity to either wait for you or leave a note with their contact information. Some years ago when I was backing up in a hotel parking lot I clipped the left corner of a Lexus. Needless to say I felt like an idiot. I tried to locate the owner by asking the front desk to contact them. Not able to reach them we called the police to file a report. I called my insurance company to give them a heads up. I felt bad for damaging that car but I took responsibility. I learned the car was repaired from a later communication from the insurance company.

Simple (as in easy) roof repairs can usually be done by a local handyman for significant savings. Unfortunately, the guy I used to call on had a stroke and is no longer available.

A few months ago, the roof on my storage building sprang a leak. I hired one of the local guys to fix it, but he really didn't know what he was doing. I climbed up on the ladder to show him, fell and cut my hand open requiring 4 stitches. Next time I'll just pay the roofer.

He did get the roof fixed though. $200 for materials, $100 for labor, and I was able to finish up the job with a rag tied around my hand. Still better to pay the roofer $500 to $1,000.

I do my own roofing on anything under 10’. I figure I can still bounce from that far but second story stuff goes to the “guy”.

My son and I did the barn (actually more of a big garage) roof a few years ago. I wanted to show him how to do it and have some father/son bonding. We did about half together then I let him take over. It was kind of fun but materials were about 3X more than 20 years prior.

So after seeing @graphicguy’s post on his car damage, this is what Mrs Carnaught witnessed this morning. She was behind a late model blue McClaren, detailed up, following him making a left turn to a divided street. The somewhat elderly driver apparently didn’t straighten out fast enough after making the turn successfully. She noted that he not only curbed his tires and wheels but his fender and rocker panel, on the cement divider, leaving a prominent cloud visible ahead of her. When he changed from center to right lane to make the turn, most likely to stop and assess the damage, she saw a very shocked and bummed-out looking man. Can you imagine how this guy must have felt?

    Car was like this.

This just now unfolding. My daughter’s cousin was driving back to college after a weekend visit with her folks. About 3 exits from her turn off point she feels a bump and spins off the road. She is ok. As it turns out the wreck was caught on surveillance and the police arrived shortly after to see if she was ok. Surveillance showed someone hit her on the rear, caused her to spin. The person who hit her just kept on going. They caught them, thankfully. I’m not making this up, good grief! My wife and daughter are in quite a stir!

I had a small roof leak over the screened porch and called a roofing company to repair it. He came down after the repair and said that I had a lot of roofing issues. Keep in mind that the roof was replaced six years ago. Roofer gave a quote of over $15,000 but suggested a reroof because he said the repairs would be visible.

I called the insurance company and an adjuster came out. His only comment was “your roof is in great shape”.

Hmmm. I know who not to call back if I ever have a roofing issue. I never imagined someone would be so dishonest.

    ————————————————

When @andres3 sees this he’s going to ask, “why would you believe an insurance company adjuster”? Having said that, I’d talk to another roofing guy and I’d get that guys contact info from someone you know who is satisfied with his work.

I called my friend who is a brick mason and got a local roofer’s number. That roofer came over and agreed with the insurance adjuster…

No link between registration and insurance/license here, as far as I know. I don't believe the state registration system talks to insurers at all. Not that it would stop anyone - just drive a car registered to someone else. Makes me think that my mom mentioned something along the lines that even if she called the police, nothing would happen - what can they do, take away her license? Oops, too late. Fine her? Blood, turnip, etc.

Has anyone talked about new cars not having am radios installed any more?
It seems drivers in the U.S. want am radios....popular in the U.S. because they are useful for news and traffic/weather reports. Also good because the waves reach remote areas easily, less having to change channels and find a station that comes in clearly.
In Europe though, people are abandoning listening to am radio. Distances are less and of course am sound is not as good as other forms.
It looks like European makes are dumping am radios on new cars, while domestic makers will hang on for now.
    https://www.thedrive.com/news/heres-why-some-automakers-tune-out-am-radios-in-new-cars

I only listen to AM radio. I don’t do satellite. My phone doesn’t have a playlist.

Yes I am a dinosaur and I like it.

I listen to AM radio a fair bit because there is Talk Radio...which gives me insight into some of the current news events.
And to play and get to tennis/or pickleball I sometimes need weather and traffic reports to plan my day or route.
A lot of AM stations are now specialty channels, sports, all news, we had a comedy channel, a multi-cultural channel, one station specializes in 50s and 60s music.
When we drove to Florida there were places when you couldn't pick up a radio station at all...or if you did it was a religious channel!!!!!!!!!

The atmospheric conditions at night make the signal go further sometime up to 2,000 miles. Also non clear channel stations either shut down or greatly reduce their power after sunset so they don't interfere with the clear channel stations. So at night the ability to pull in far away AM stations greatly increase. I would be surprised if you couldn't receive it at night from 100 miles away, even with a newer tunner.

My sincerest empathy and sympathy to you for that damage sustained in the parking lot. Been there - done that - as most of us have experienced the same thing happen to us. Few things are more aggravating to car guys, like us, than damage to our cars.

My G90 is 16 months old and I am on pins-and-needles waiting for the first scratch, ping dent or damage to “her”. Since I am handicapped now with my back (need a walker to travel by foot more than 25-30 steps) I have a handicap tag so I can park in those extra wide spaces and have been able to avoid damage to my car from other cars. But it’s only a matter of time before I experience some sort of damage.

Hope the damage isn’t too costly to repair. Those plastic bumpers are more expensive to replace and repaint than you would think and labor is expensive.

Good old AM radio! At the southern tip of the Jersey shore I think you actually can pick up NY stations better since the signal comes in over the water, even though it is further away than Philly.

I had to listen to it a week back when I was taking the Uhaul up north. only AM/FM on that (no streaming, no connecting a phone) and in the boonies I could get exactly 1 FM station, and it was a format I refused to listen to. So, spent a good hour listening to talk radio of some kind. Better than nothing!

This cost me $800 with the good customer discount.

You got a good customer discount from a body repair company? what are you doing, playing bumper cars on the highway?

No, my last at fault accident was when Jimmy Carter was president but my kids could qualify as demo derby drivers. I have paid this shop many a visit. :'(

    Speaking of bad drivers...

This happened here last night around 9PM apparently. A coffee shop on the corner of two relatively low-traffic and slow streets suffered this damage to their "patio" which is actually a section of the side street next to the curb that the city leased out and permitted them to use. It would take quite the impact to break a jersey barrier I would think. Thankfully they were closed at the time so nobody was injured. Amazingly, even with all of the houses you see in the background and presumably residents of same, the culprit and the vehicle mysteriously disappeared. Hard to believe it was still able to move.

My iPhone 8+ finally surrendered to old age after 4 years of heavy use. So, I staggered into the Apple Store in Boca Raton yesterday morning and made a decision to get the iPhone 13. With glass screen protector, the new high speed charging plug adapter and 2 years of Apple Care+, the total bill, including tax, came to $840. I was able to get some discounts due to my State of Illinois pension and affiliation with state government.

Phone is super fast compared to the 8+. Getting used to the facial recognition system takes a little time - especially after 10 years of iPhones with a home button. It charges with the new cord and adapter three times faster than previous iPhones. I just hope this phone lasts as long as the 8+ did.

I had to get a new work iPhone last week; the battery on my 8+ expanded and separated the case.

Showed up the next day, and now I'm totally locked out of all my work applications (even on my computer) due to the two factor authentication software my company uses. I've alerted our IT folks, and the only way they can contact me is through a phone call or text message on my new phone.

If you're going to do 2fa (2 factor authentication), you really really need a backup for the authentication. When you don't, well....

I have been caught in that struggle before, it isn't pretty.

In my last position before retiring, I was doing support. But not desktop support, I was supporting high performance computing, which mostly meant scientific applications running under unix, and often on clusters (the modern day supercomputer). But I was often called upon to help to help the end users with gaining access from their desktop windows computers to run remote jobs on the unix clusters. When i showed up in their office, and fixed whatever was wrong, I often took care of other problems on their Windows computers. Which was not a part of my job description, but as long as I was there, and they asked nicely, why not?

Quite often I would be asked, "Why can't / won't desktop support fix these problems for me? When I call, all I get is a run around." The true answer, of course, I was paid more than twice as much as the people doing desktop support. These days, desktop support is considered an entry level position, usually filled by an outside contract company (the lowest bidder). And as with most things in life, you get what you pay for.

I just heard about a rash of Kia and Hyundai Elantra thefts sparked by a TicToc video showing how to steal them with a cell phone charging cord. Kia from 2011-21 and Elantra’s made after 2016 are most susceptible.

The only remedy is to buy a steering wheel lock according to police. Kia and Hyundai basically say tough luck.

    Anyone else heard this?

Bumper repair estimates ranged from $650 to $1,300. Pretty big spread.

The $650 estimate came from the dealership where I bought the Accord. They have a lifetime repair warranty. So, $650 estimate it is.

Now, getting it scheduled for repair. The most expensive shop was scheduling out to December at the soonest.

My dealership said it’s a small job, so should be able to fit it in in a couple of weeks.

Yeah I saw the article. I thought I heard that H/K had a software fix for the glitch.

Steering wheel locks don’t work, they just cut the steering wheel with bolt cutters in 3 seconds.
