When I had my heart surgery 5 years ago I had a similar zipper down the middle of my chest. I think I counted 25 or so when they were removed. They sent me home with the removal tool and said to go visit my family doctor in a week or so to have them taken out. To my surprise, the removal was not a big deal. Only one of them gave more than a hint of bleeding.
Well, I just returned from my first PT appointment and I'm not so prideful as to admit I cried. The therapist has two goals over the next ten weeks, 0 degrees extension and 130 degrees flexion. After ten weeks I'm pretty much locked. He said this is the single most painful orthopedic surgery to recover from.
Mike and all those others with artificial knees, you have my respect and admiration.
That is just what I thought it would look like. Wonder if it would set off the airport metal detectors.
It does. I have a card in my wallet from the manufacturer of my knee replacement co-signed by my orthopod. Last year when I last flew on an airline, it set off the alarms at the TSA line. I asked for my wallet and pulled out the card - but they still treated me like some terrorist. The hand held sensor proved that the metal was in my left knee. What did the expect me to do? Unzip my skin and muscles and tendons so the could extract it?
Ha, ha. That would be funny.

Guys, your so-called "zipper" are surgical stainless steel skin staples . They won't set off the scanners but the titanium alloys or the stainless steel in the prostheses might.

@abacomike,
I've peeked in NYY Steak a couple of times, but we are there for the game. Dogs/Sausage/Pretzels are our usual fare.
Enjoy the game. When I lived in NYC, I was a staunch Yankee fan. I lived in Queens and all my friends were Met fans. I hated the Mets - they were supposedly the replacements for the Brooklyn Dodgers. The Mets were many things, but they certainly could never replace D'em Bumbs (Dodgers).
I guess I became a Yankee fan because of Yogi Berra, Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris, Whitey Ford, Elston Howard, Moose Skowron, Billy Martin, Phil Rizuto, to name a few reasons.

I cited the reports of the studies so that I could kill two birds with one stone. You get a summary report, and a link right on the front page of the original study;
What is the second bird? The problem with the way you did it was that you relied on someone elses summary all the while not summarizing it yourself. This tells me you didn't read the study and went with whatever supported your position not knowing if the clearly represented the study.
Far better than spouting off a bunch of references that are either A) Non-existent made-up references, Don't have any link/reference provided, C) are being misinterpreted and misrepresented by you and/or your favorite insurance published and backed source.
So you can't argue the merits of the argument so you go on the personal attack. Nothing I cited was false or made up, and as far as misrepresenting, well lets just look at what you wrote.
Due to the Solomon curve, we do know that if the typical average flow of traffic is 70 MPH, then going 65 MPH makes you less safe, so going slower isn't always safer because the multitude of factors that weigh-in on what is safer heavily favor my arguments over yours (longer reaction times and stopping distances) just don't factor in nearly as much as 85th percentile speeds of other traffic around you. Since we know the 85th percentile speed is often higher than the speed limit on the sign, that's the conundrum you have to deal with personally; that you can't seem to get over.
A few issues with the Solomon study. First we are discussing absolute speeds and the Solomon study deals with relative speeds and there is a difference. The solomon curve is meaningless when discussing the dangers, or lack thereof, of going faster as it only deals with relative speed. Second there have been other studies such as from the Road Accident Research Unit, Adelaide University that showed that traffic going slower had a slower rate in increase in accidents than faster moving traffic at the same difference is speed.
Also note that the Triangle Research Group did a study of accidents and found the same results as Solomon. However they distinguished between slower moving vehicles and vehicles that were either stopped or slowing to make a turn. When they removed those turning cars from the equation they found that the slower speed traffic had a much lower rate of accidents than that of the faster moving traffic. In short removing turning traffic eliminates Solomons curve.
Yes, I think I've conclusively proven that sometimes going faster than the speed limit is safer; especially when other traffic is going faster than the speed limit as well.
Nope, you haven't. All you are doing is trying to justify your speeding.

but if I wanted a beater, would rather have one with more normal miles (75k?) for maybe $4,000. Not worth that premium. It isn't a collectible, and who knows how much rot there is in there from sitting too much.

I was only in a couple of DC-10s and the flights were fine, but that image from O'Hare was always in the back of my mind.
I remember that one, that was just a few miles from my house. I remember the plum of smoke rising into the sky.
I remember that DC 10 crash vividly! I took that same flight number on American Airlines on a DC 10 the very next day - nonstop flight from Chicago's O'Hare Field to Los Angeles. I was a nervous wreck!

My wife has an artificial hip. TSA hassles her when she tells them and if she doesn't. I keep telling her to wear a Hijab on her head and then she won't be hassled due to political correctness. But TSA hassles flight crews too sometimes. By and large I think TSA people are decent and only doing their job, but there are a share of jerks there too like most places of employment I think.
Had a friend coming in from LGA on an American 727 that actually saw the fireball explode in the air as they were landing at ORD on runway 27R. Didn't know what it was at the time, but said it was large. One of the problems was that the DC10 flight crew thought they lost engine power, rather than lost an engine. That triggered a hydraulic leak and loss. The flight crew were initially trying to gain some altitude and do a return. Had they known early they might have been able to handle it, but it still would have been a long shot. The issue was further aggravated because on the DC10 the main and backup hydraulic lines ran together, They were separated on an L1011. This issue played into the United Sioux City, IA DC10 event as well.
If you think people wearing hijabs (head coverings) are not hassled going through airports you are sadly mistaken. There are whole websites and many articles devoted to "flying while Muslim". But back to body replacement parts: some set off airport security and some don't.
I don't doubt that happens sometimes suydam, but I also suspect it is sometimes exaggerated in the websites. As for TSA, I swear sometimes they just use a counter machine and pick every N-th person to further screen. The newer security machines don't use the old metal detector and x-ray technology. They are more like a low powered CAT scan.
Interesting thoughts regarding the TSA screening and synthetic implants. I know the titanium will show on the new wave form scanners and now I'm curious if it'll be problematic. Worst case I suppose I'll have to adjust to the almighty gloved hand and budget time for additional security.

Thanks for the well wishes on the detached retina. Had it done yesterday. I've had Lasik, cataract and now detached retina surgeries. Retina suregery was by far the most painful. Lasik and cataract, I never felt a thing except later when my eyes ached a bit. Detached retina? I don't know if the anesthetist wasn't on his game, or what, but the last 10 minutes of surgery hurt like hell. And, I've been pretty sore since. Go this a.m. to see how the first report looks.
They used oil instead of gas pockets in my eye so I can fly. If not, and since I fly a lot, I couldn't go above 2,000 feet for 3 weeks if the gas pockets were used. The down side with oil, they have to go back in a little later and take the oil sac out. Kind of sounds like a car's new breakin period!
No new news on the Cadillac. Looks like I'm driving the XTS loaner at least through Labor Day.
Funny and coincidental, my freindly Acura guy called yesterday just to see how I was doing. I explained to him what was going on. Of course. seeking an opportunity, he said he would be more than happy to help if I needed advice (which would lead to a sale of an Acura). I told him I may pop in after my eye appointment this a.m.
That segues nicely into wishing all my U.S. friends a happy and safe Labor Day!
Snake...I don't have the empirical data that you have. But, I gotta say, those who seem to purposely go under the speed limit by a nitceable amount, either on side streets, interstates, or rural routes, do seem to cause more accidents.
I have my own theory and it's strictly via my observations, but those who text aren't paying attention to what they're doing, including their speed, and seem to be the biggest offenders. I'll throw in not using handsfree devices when talking on cell phones is right there with the people who aren't paying attention and tend to drive well under the speed limits.
Rubber neckers....those who insist on driving 10 or even 20 MPH under the speek limit so they can view the wreckage (as if they can actually help by holding everyone else up). I see rear enders happen all the time when it's clear someone just had to slow down to see the side show and the people behind them don't share their same fascination.
Going to get a bit sexist on the next generaliztion, but young girls, and old ladies seem to be oblivious to what's going on around them. That gets into the whole "I'm afraid to drive 50 MPH on an interstate with a 70 MPH speek limit (mostly the elder ladies). If you're afraid to drive, for any reason, you probably shouldn't. The younger set is brushing their hair, mputting on makeup, talking on the phone, all at the same time and are again, totally oblivious to the happenings around them.
There's a viral video going around the Cincinnati area last week. On the interstate was a girl, obviously on some sort of drugs, who was weaving in an out of the median...quite dangerous. Even more dangerous, was some 15 minute of fame seeker who was driving behind her and decided to take videos of her antics while yelling out of his window after her. He fashioned himself as some sort of hero, when in reality, he was probably putting more people on the same road in even more danger has he was more concerned about getting his video uploaded on YouTube.
I'm an equal opportunity finger pointer. So, let's turn our attentions to the youg guys out there who believe it's more important to drive under the speed limit so everyone within a 100 yards can hear the terrible stereo install in his car. Or, the "cruiser" who believes he must go under the speed limit so everyone can see his yellow ricer with purple wheels.
I could go on, but I probably should just get another cup of coffee instead.

Good luck on your full recovery for your retina GG. Glad they found a way so you can fly. One friend had gas and then got on a plane....terrible pain! They didn't tell her not to get on a plane.
Now in Ontario we have a minimum $500 fine if you are distracted holding any kind of device, like a phone or GPS. You get a fine just for holding it, not even using it. There were lots of accidents they know were caused by phones,,,many fatal. Some, caused by picking up the phone.
GG, what are you deciding about the lawyer? You will be fighting GM, who can make this thing go on. Maybe contact the lawyer who worked on the key/starter issue. Or a lawyer who will work on contingency basis. One last time.....government agency that will go after GM using Lemon Law. I know of people who win their case but it costs them more than they win.
I'll wish my American friends a happy Labor Day too, and my Canadian friends a happy Labour Day as well.
When it comes to rubbernecking, many states, inclunding mine have "move over" laws, where you either move to the next lane, or slow 10 mph below the limit, if you can't. Doing that would usually send ripples through the traffic. The slowdowns may be annoying, but speeding next to emergency vehicles does not look like a good idea, either.
Retina suregery was by far the most painful. Lasik and cataract, I never felt a thing except later when my eyes ached a bit. The down side with oil, they have to go back in a little later and take the oil sac out.
Are they making you stay in bed with your head "down"? Neither of my retinal repairs hurt, nor did my Lasik or cataracts. The oil sac is new to me, wish I could get the silicon out of my eye. Including two Yags, I'm up to 8 "procedures". Still don't need glasses around the house after all that.
The VW dealer is working the phones here; been ignoring their calls. The out of town Dodge dealer emailed a Labor Day used car tent sale flyer. The Kia dealer has followed my request and has emailed me updates. All three of my replies to that dealer have bounced; apparently they put my (legit) email in their spam filter. And there's so many '15 Souls here, the GM said there's no tentative date for getting any '16s in.
Think I mentioned, I had a choice between haveing the "gas sac" or the "oil sac". The downside to gas, you can't go above 2,000 ft for a few weeks. My Doc said anywhere from 3 weeks to 5 weeks, sometimes longer. I'm in the air 3 out of every 4 weeks. No doubt there was quite a bit of pain as the gas would react quite differently at 10,000 feet than it would a sea level. The gas just dissipates over time....kind of like a baloon that deflates over time.
The oil allows me to fly immediately (but will probably lay low next week, just in case). The other advantage is there aren't as many restrictions on how you sleep, how you have to position your head, etc. The downside, they have to go back in and remove the oil sac. Something that's supposed to be minor, but still invasive.
Last night (first night back from surgery), I had to get up and stand and move around every 15 minutes. But, that was just for yesterday. I don't have those restrictions from today forward. Then, I could only sleep with my head pointing to one side (in my case, the left). Just did the 24 hour post operative check-up this a.m. Only caveat I have now is I must sleep with an eye patch and with my head elevated with 3-4 pillows for about a week. I can live with that.
Driver...you're the one who said about the legal Lemon Law process. You get what you pay for. I talked to a couple of places (on line) who do Lemon Law representation on a contingency basis. My lawyer will do it with a retainer. Not sure how much I could expect from an online outfit who would most likely cherry pick the easy cases, which although mine should be easy, Cadillac has made it clear they'd rather fight me. According to my state's (OHIO) Lemon Law rules, my case should be open and shut. It involves safety items (power steering failure and stalling) , which Cadillac gets one chance to fix (they did not). Or, be in the Cadillac repair faciility for 30 days or more (mine is sneaking up on two months). Attorney General said I should send a certified letter to Cadillac with my paperwork showing where they were non-compliant (easy to do with all the service receipts I have).
I tried to get to the CAdillac Retgional Re, like I did with my Mom's Lemon Cadillac several years ago. But apparently, the dealers aren't being coopreative in setting something up with him/her. I'm thinking of the certified letter and some bad PR should get Cadillac to do what's right. So, I'll contact the local news "Trouble shooter" guy on it. And, I'm pretty serious about getting some magnetic signs that say "CADILLAC LEMON" and plaster them on the car when/if it's returned to me.

OK GG, I didn't realize you still needed a lawyer if you used the states lemon law process. In Canada, it is free to file against the auto maker, and then you go to an arbitration hearing. You would think, there would be forms to fill out and you could represent yourself....it shouldn't require a lawyer.
However, as long as the guilty party has to pay your legal expenses it sounds like it is definitely worth a shot. Publicity could help too, everything helps.

Are you going stir crazy with the recovery yet?
As to the Buick calling me that's just idle daydreams. It typifies my low milage holy grail, a 10 years old car with 12k miles. I think $2750 off would be just right especially after seeing how they bumped my last trade in so much. An almost new grandpa mobile for $7k? Who wouldn't like that?

Work this pimp cruiser hard and the double bench seats will be paid off in no time. To be clear, the buyer receives only the car at deed transfer. My fur coat and glass cane go into retirement with me.
This beige beauty makes a statement in any neighborhood. I thought custom rims on this mint foundation would have stopped too much traffic, but that decision passes to the next owner. The 57,000 miles clocked on the odometer tell the story: The ladies will come to YOU. Three years till classic plates; instant street cred.
Runs GREAT, very good tires, no check engine light on. Fantastic ride for school and out of town. Rides smooth. Call Mack to take a look.

Maybe I am going senile like my wife says.
A friend of mine has a 2004 LeSabre. Same color, leather, etc. Hers has about 160k, and is still going strong.
I do believe the price is about $3,000 too high, but other than that, go for it!
I had a total knee replacement in March of 2008. This was done the old fashioned way, 12 inch scar.
My grandfather used to say that it was better to be lucky than to be good. And when it came to that surgery, I was unbelievably lucky. The surgeon, the nurses in the hospital, the PT, all said that I had the easiest recovery they had ever seen for a total knee replacement. And (knock on wood) it’s still working good today, 7 years later.
My son had the '98 LeSabre in green. Finally sold it last year. God it was such a boat. I said, this is like driving in your living room. He said, that's why I like it! Different strokes! I actually thought the Impala he replaced it with ain't bad, though way too big for me. But it handles better.
Had floaters in my eye back in mid July so called my cataract doc's office and they said to go see a retina specialist asap as they thought it was a detached retina. Turns out I was lucky, just burst a blood vessel but it was still quite painful as the specialist was doing his stuff. The floaters are still present but are less and less as the weeks go by. Very annoying though. Have a battery in my lower spine due to my spinal issues and when I do fly, can not go through the normal check point. I have a card in my wallet explaining that I need to be taken out of line and have a special look see. Have had no problem when I flew a few years back and will find out again when I fly in October.

My son has a 98 Lasabre and it is certainly floaty. Handles like the Queen Mary but sometimes tired old bones like driving the living room couch. That 3.8L v6 can go many miles as henryn said but the older ones needed the intake gaskets repaired before the engine drinks too much coolant. That's the only real defect I'm aware of.
I really judge a used car by the engine. For example I wouldn't buy any Caddy with the Northstar motor. I wouldn't get a Chrysler with the 2.7L 6 unless I knew the oil change history. Probably wouldn't want the old Ford 3.8L head gasket blower either.
Certainly that's not the only thing that matters but if the engine is junk the car will never be fun to drive.

One of my brother in laws was given a low mileage(35k miles) Cadillac that he drove back from Florida where is was garaged. The first thing to stand him was brake lines failing, then something electrical. Several years later, he is still driving it.

If I understand what you are saying, you have to file Lemon Papers with Cadillac, but they don't tell you who or how to file the papers? Can't the people in government help you to get through to the right people.
If it is almost impossible to file Lemon Law papers with the manufacturer, that would make a very interesting news story for your local TV News team. From the looks of it the dealer has it about $2500 too high. My daydreams are all over the place from a cheap rusty truck to a low milage Luxobarge like a Lesabre or Grand Marquis.
Maybe I am going senile like my wife says.
A friend of mine has a 2004 LeSabre. Same color, leather, etc. Hers has about 160k, and is still going strong.
I do believe the price is about $3,000 too high, but other than that, go for it!
Are these cars really as good as the mileage would indicate? I don't know, but it seems to me any 10 year old car I have driven, with about 70k miles on it, seemed like a car that had gone twice as far. Things seem looser, and certain things just go. Maybe the cars I am thinking about had the mileage turned back, but I just don't feel the low mileage is a guaranty of a youthful car.
And, I don't know about parking a 10 year old LeSabre in my driveway OF....it may ruin my youthful image.
Well, my son was in his early 20s when he bought his LeSabre, so image is as image does. In his case, he's 6'3" and also cheap, so no SUVs. The thing about those old Buicks, they made the same engine and parts for about 15 years at least, so they had it down. It was still running when he sold it but it did need work by then.

I've peeked in NYY Steak a couple of times, but we are there for the game. Dogs/Sausage/Pretzels are our usual fare.
I guess I became a Yankee fan because of Yogi Berra, Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris, Whitey Ford, Elston Howard, Moose Skowron, Billy Martin, Phil Rizuto, to name a few reasons.

but if I wanted a beater, would rather have one with more normal miles (75k?) for maybe $4,000. Not worth that premium. It isn't a collectible, and who knows how much rot there is in there from sitting too much.

Lots of screamer ads in the paper too.

However, as long as the guilty party has to pay your legal expenses it sounds like it is definitely worth a shot. Publicity could help too, everything helps.

Have a battery in my lower spine due to my spinal issues and when I do fly, can not go through the normal check point. I have a card in my wallet explaining that I need to be taken out of line and have a special look see. Have had no problem when I flew a few years back and will find out again when I fly in October.

Car scam stories are of high interest, and this one would be of a lot of interest to a lot of people. Found a '14 Elantra GT at a used car lot downtown. Will try to eyeball it next week to see if we should keep the '16 on the possible list.
