The coldest I have even been was in Ft. Myers Fl. several years ago. Started playing golf one morning and a front came through a little later. Bermuda shorts and short sleeve shirt. Wind was howling, misting rain, and it probably got down somewhere in the 40's temp. wise. We had to quit. Next day warm and sunny and close to 80.

It would be nice if an individual could make a deal with a local gas station to pre-pay for 500-1000 gals. of gasoline during times like these. I may give it a try. I would even pay a premium over current prices. Wouldn't use it until prices went up substantially. Maybe make a deal with a local bulk plant?

EGR? I suppose that could be impacted if the detergents survive combustion. The EGR system takes a small portion of the exhaust gasses and routes the air stream back to the intake. I don't think detergents survive combustion intact, though, and if that's the case, then they won't help clean the system. I could be wrong, of course.

I don't buy gasoline that is not "top tier" rated.  Sunoco is not a top tier gasoline.  My engine is a "direct injection" twin turbo and really needs a fuel recommended by most premium automobile manufacturers (MB, BMW, Porsche, Audi, etc.).  My iPhone "GasBuddy" App identifies for you those gasolines rated as "top tier".

Some of the top tier gasolines are Costco, Mobil, Texaco, Chevron, Shell, Valero, BP, and Exxon.  Those are the only top tier gasolines sold in my general area.  Direct injection engines need ultra high detergent fuels in order to burn cleaner and leave less residue from combustion

For the length of time you keep your car it isn't going to make any difference.


P.S. Good luck with the tests. No one looks forward to getting medical tests, but it could really help!

Yes that'd my point, intake is not being cleaned by detergents in fuel with direct injection, but EGR is still going on.

Just filled up for $1.73 for PUG at Costco. My car is filthy. So, may stop at the dealership for a wash, if they aren't backed up.

I remember being in a gas station back in 1973 filling my tank at the outrageous price of 40 cents a gallon and seeing a guy with a bunch of 55 gallon drums in his pick up. Thought he was nuts until a few weeks later when the gas lines started.

I think Top Tier is mostly marketing. If gas isn't good enough, instead of some of the manufacturers and automakers banding together, they could have just petitioned the EPA crowd to increase the minimum required additive pack. I used the local Holiday station when I was in a small town in the UP (not the Venezuelan Citgo much, mostly because of convenience). After a couple of years they must have filed all their paperwork because they went Top Tier. Wouldn't surprise me if they kept using the same additive pack at the distributor.

We got about 14 inches of snow so we're housebound until it melts. At least the TV and internet still works (satellites). I plowed some of the driveway with the Kubota, but gave up when I ran out of places to put the snow. Mustang is all cozy in the garage while the wife's Denali is buried in snow

My sister caught a bug in Chattanooga last week. She's back home in NW Virginia and picked a good time to be stuck in bed with a sinus infection. Her new Subaru might not even get out of her driveway in this mess.

Strictly anecdotal, but my DI MS3 threw a "Low EGR flow" CEL at @ 50k miles. I switched from Kroger gas to BP and ran a couple of 20 oz. bottles of Techron through the system and the light went out.I also run a bottle of Techron through at 3k intervals. It reappeared at 69k and I replace the valve. However, I'm now at 158k and the EGR valve issue has not resurfaced. As I understand it, some amount of polyetheramine (PEA) survives the combustion process- and I think that was the case with my MS3

One of my BIL's lives outside of DC and sent a picture. They have a lot of snow, too.
I'm pretty keyed up after the snow storm hype, but so far barely any accumulation after it started couple of hours ago.
Not enough snow to shovel yet, so I've been setting the tire pressures in a couple of the cars, vacuuming them out, cutting up cardboard boxes to recycle, reading my new Michael Connelly book, doing pushups.
Don't feel like turning on the TV yet.

I am not all to sure about that, it that were the case I know a few intersections where they could clean up with a red light camera. I tend to agree with you on that, once the light turns amber if I can reasonably and safely stop I do. And that is what the law requires. Your example reminds me of what happened to me a month or two ago. I was approaching a green light at a reasonable distance behind the car in front of me and the car behind me was at a reasonable distance. The light turned amber and I summed up the situation as the car ahead of me would easily make the intersection but I wouldn't so I proceeded to take actions to stop at the intersection (no red light camera, never was one there).

Well the car in front of me decided to stop anyway (must have had to hit the brakes rather hard to do so). Now since I was already preparing to stop it was no skin off my nose as all I had to do stop just a little bit faster, no hard panic stop mind you just a little shorter than I hand anticipated. I noticed the car behind me had gunned it to get through the intersection and now was in a panic mode trying to stop from hitting me.

Now that I think about it had that guy had been nabbed a few times with a red light camera would he have tried it there.

Speaking of gunning it to make a light many decades ago I had a co-worker who did that and got two tickets, one for speeding and one for running the red light. Did he deserve them? most likely yes.

Speaking of red light running what seems to be getting to be the norm here is intersections where you have a left turn on green arrow only you seem to get a lot of cars blatantly running the red turn arrow especially during rush hour. Seriously there are some intersections where you will get the green light but you will get 3,4 or even 5 oncoming cars making their left turn right in front of you. If they want to make money that's where they should put the cameras.

Speaking about red light cameras and such, there was a big article in today's Sun Sentinel (Ft.Lauderdale area newspaper) about how scores of municipalities as well as Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties, have installed hundreds of cameras at intersections and busy thoroughfares throughout the area - not for trying to catch drivers running red lights, but rather to monitor and observe what is happening at those sites. They are all tied into a master computer. Additionally, 40% of the police vehicles have the same types of cameras that are also tied into that same computer. The article mentioned that hundreds of crimes, hit and runs, robberies, car-jackings, etc., have been caught and/or solved by having a video record of what took place.

I had heard that this was beginning to find favor with many police departments throughout the country. The article cited a murder that was solved by the use of photos captured on several cameras throughout Miami-Dade County. This guy's girlfriend was found face down in a area of brush just off a main artery. By pulling up photos from a camera near the scene, they identified someone leaving the scene driving the deceased car. Another camera near the boyfriend's residence showed the deceased car parked outside apartment. They got a search warrant and found ammunition, the gun, and other evidence and then arrested the boyfriend on charges of second degree murder.

Another example was of a hit-and-run. This guy was riding his bicycle and a car hit him and took off. Cameras at the scene got a picture of the car and the license plate. Shortly thereafter, the driver was arrested and the police impounded the car which had damage on the right front. The guy was charged with vehicular manslaughter.

So, I guess if they can't use these cameras to issue traffic violations, they can at least begin solving some crimes.

Any thoughts on this?

A very slippery slope in terms of our privacy. Why then, not have cameras everywhere, all the time? It's creepy.

My little burb saw a slight decline in accidents at the intersections where they installed red light cameras. The City of Chicago reports a drop in accidents and the severity of accidents since installing cameras.

Didn't you have a plow truck that you got rid of because it never snowed?

As for the Mustang being all cozy in the garage while everything else is left outside....that's the way it should be.

We had several inches of rain when that front passed us and that translates into several feet of snow if my moisture extrapolations are correct.

We just finished a round on lows reaching -4 and highs of less than 9, what we wouldn't have given to have had a high of 41. Come back when you actually get some cold weather.

I spoke with the technician who is going to handle my cardiac stress test on Monday morning.  She told me to make sure I don't eat anything after midnight and not to take my insulin or the 10 or so pills I take every morning - but to bring the medications with me so I can take them after the test.

I won't have to walk on a treadmill - they use an IV medication that increases the heart rate.  What they are trying to assess is the coronary artery where the stent was placed as well as two other arteries that are 50% closed.  They do a series of special cardiograms with ultra sound and use a fluoroscope to observe the heart, valves and blood flow.

I just hope everything works out - I am a little nervous about the whole process. 

I am sure everything will work out, hang in there we are all pulling for you.

Exactly what I was thinking. Sounds like a giant step in the direction of current North Korea, 30s era Germany or 50s era Soviet Union. Don't want anything to do with that. Don't want red light cameras, regardless of the reasons anyone says we need them.

I think RB said they did away with them in OH, IIRC! Surprised red light cameras have survived any constitutional challenges.

there are a ton of cameras these days. Including all the private ones (on stores, etc.) which at least around here, the police have access to (tied into the network) when they want to check them.

you see how many whenever there is a crime they cover on TV, and have a bunch of video. and assuming all the CSI type shows are accurate, they can monitor all the traffic cams via plate recognition too, so basically plug in a tag #, and the computer can locate.

And I have told others this and the usually fall into two camps; 1.) they already know and 2.) they don't believe you since it's what their father taught them about cars.

Oh where do I start? I have been rear ended twice in the bus stopping for yellow lights. (Once a few weeks ago). The driver's around here seem to think traffic laws are mere suggestions. One intersection comes to mind where there is a green arrow that at least a half dozen run the red in front of you.

My pet peeve is the intersection in front of the police station where numerous drivers use the shoulder as a turning lane to make right on red without stopping. I've seen a number of sideswipes and sheared mirrors.

If the police would just look out the window they could write a hundred tickets but for some reason they choose to tag the drivers going 10 over on the highway a mile away.

The section of road where most run the reds has a frustrating light sequence where you take off from the green only to have the next turn red, then the next and the next....

I know I've blasted through the stale yellow in my car more than once. Someone suggested that businesses pay the town to do it that way so you will always have to stop in front of their store.

Wasn't me, but as for RLC challenges, what staes do to get around the due process issues is to classify minor traffic offenses as "administrative" rather than criminal violations- which they can do as long as possible penalties do not involve jail time. Hence, no right to trial by jury, no right to confrontation, etc.

But it's obviously not only about "safety", it's about revenue,too...half a billion bucks a year! (in California). The "science" of proving that these devices decrease accidents is not all that convincing, because there's trickery going on there...for instance, Chicago claimed in its RLC studies that accidents went down 6%. That's true. But miles driven in Chicago went down 7%.

If they would limit RLC to say a handful of the worst offending intersections (the ones that produce the majority of accidents), and post plenty of warning signs about the cameras, I could maybe live with that. But it never stops there. Once you give them permission, they take it as far as they can go with it.

When was the last time a government was given special powers by the people and the government gave those powers back? Rare indeed.

I agree that there is a point at which our right to privacy comes into question.  If you go outside, get into your car, then drive your car on public streets, it is my opinion you have given up your right to privacy in this situation.  Same is true if you hit someone on a bike and leave the scene.  Once you choose to go out into public view, you have given up your right to privacy.

If you leave your house and walk a few blocks, pick up some wine and/or beer at a liquor store and then return home using public sidewalks, you have also given up your right to privacy - especially is you are under the drinking age and are later arrested for underage purchase of alcohol.

But when you are in your home and someone takes pictures of you while you are in your living room from outside, you have an expectation of privacy and even though you are visible in your house from the street, you have a right to privacy.

So if you are out in public, you have no right to privacy, in my opinion.  So if you are caught on camera while out in public, your right to privacy was not invaded.

My sister emailed that she had 30 inches of snow and it's coming down at 4 inches an hour. She's prone to hyperbole so I'm not sure how much of that could be exaggeration. She has no plans to go anywhere until Tuesday, but I bet she gets cabin fever long before that.

I am thinking the same. I bet 99% of the population have never heard the term "top tier" used before. I doubt if Exxon or Shell in Canada would bother with it....dealers never mention it - and they would care how their trade-in are maintained.

RE: Red Light Camera's!

I have heard the arguments that they cause rear end accidents. Well, if someone runs into your car because you stopped for an amber light they are at fault....for following too close. Are we supposed to change laws so the people who break the laws will be covered?

About rights and cameras!

In England they have 1000s of cameras in major cities. It has cut down on crimes especially robberies and assaults. I think that protects my rights more than protecting criminals who can do their dirty work and not get caught. What good are rights, when they protect the bad guy?

Back home there was a main downtown street where lots of criminal activity including thefts were taking place. Surveillance cameras have really cut back the crime rate. Why would I worry about a thief's rights? I'd rather me be protected than him.

Society is changing...the laws that worked 100 years ago just don't work any more. I care about my rights...but really, I don't have anything I have to hide, if it can help to protect society.

I had explained that on the second try the legislature got a bill passed that requires a policeman to be present at the location where the red light/speed cameras are clicking the photos. Dayton City was going to try another way around that law, but apparently gave up after a few months.

It's NOT about safety. It has always been about revenue. Our city has never installed cameras. The cameras don't NAB anyone. They don't reach down and grab the car that just went through the red light. The owner gets a bill a few weeks later. Not a very good reinforcement for punishment of the bad behavior. That's like telling your youngster next week about how they're not allowed to throw food at the table when they're 2 years old. Even funnier was that Dayton City in past years was only having about 2/3 of the bills paid and the red light camera money maker folks were getting on them to collect more money so the Australian company could collect more of their share of the money.

Nothing is more effective than an officer in a car who observes the violation and actually stops the driver, then and there, and is able to assess for drugs and alcohol as well as a valid driver license and registration for the vehicle along with proper insurance in place on vehicle. A red light camera did none of those.

The primarily folks who get photographed by cameras are ones from out-of-town who don't know where they are located. The locals stop at those but ignore the others without cameras.

During the campaign by local political divisions to keep cameras they showed pictures of accidents where people ran red lights. I never saw one camera stop the red light runner and prevent the accident. It made great "You're on candid camera videos" but nothing in the way of timely positive enforcement.

Our state had passed a bill a few years before but an outgoing (idiot) governor vetoed it. Another village had lost its idiot).

Similar bill got through this time. I actually feel safer, but I still don't drive through the cities here that were using red light cameras other than the interstate or freeways.

I don't have a problem with that sign one bit......it is a warning for bad guys...if they can read, and it is there for my protection. There are a lot of streets I wouldn't feel comfortable walking down in London UK., that sign would be a positive rather than a negative for me.

I almost always buy Shell because I think (based on my experience) that their fuels are consistently good quality. Plus they give Air Miles! Shell Canada is indeed Top Tier:

Septa (philly transit system) has been installing cameras all over. In stations, on buses/trains, even body cams on the transit police. They catch all kinds of stuff that used to just happen. Riders love it, since a lonely station can be kind of scary!

so if you are in a subway station in Philly, don't pick your nose because someone in command central is watching. Though you might appreciate it if some lowlife tries to rob you, because they can dispatch police before you can call for help!

The primarily folks who get photographed by cameras are ones from out-of-town who don't know where they are located. The locals stop at those but ignore the others without cameras.

Even if they stop at the one's they know have a camera, that is some progress. The police can't be everywhere, the cameras help to spot more lights, and are on guard 24/7.

Someone told me they got a $180 fine for going through a particular red light camera. I would try to stop anyway, but now I really make sure I will stop.

I think ideally, there should be signs warning everyone the town has RLCs, and some of them should be roving cameras or locations not given.

I have heard argument it causes more rear end accidents. It is possible the type of accidents are less damaging than being T-Boned in an intersection.

Guess they do...but, I think if it was such an issue my salesman would have said....we recommend you use TT gasoline.

I tend to lean toward doing what I can to avoid cheesing a red, so will actually make an attempt to stop for a yellow (without doing anything crazy). Though I do check the rear view mirror for someone likely to end up in my trunk.

sometimes though I cut it a little close, and get all nervous that I may have caught the red (and this is regular lights, not camera ones). Then I look behind him, and almost a guarantee that a few people behind me just blew through without seemingly a care.
