Oh and side note - for those of you around here, was at the Monroe fairgrounds for horse show. My wife and the other women from her barn were out there with their horses. However the schedule on Saturday amazed me.
I thought you knew if you planned to go to one of my fairgrounds over the Memorial Day weekend, you are entitled to an additional 30% discount on Ram pickup truck purchases.
Man, did you ever screw up.

@murphydog RE: the second sticker was something my SIL said her Jeep had, too. She initially had walked on the the lot before asking for my help, though, so was extremely confused when she saw the ADM sticker.

@murphydog, congrats on the new Ram. Those babies are really good looking. Mfgrs have made great strides on fuel economy on trucks.
Before I get started, as everyone knows, I have a V8 so I don't get good mileage nor should I expect any but I know that mileage is a bragging right for some but sadly not for me. I don't know how much better gas mileage for trucks can get if you believe what I'm about to say.
Back in around 2012 when I still had my '09 Genny (also a V8) and was still a working stiff, I walked into a conversation in our lunch room one morning at about 10 AM for my second cup of coffee that went something like this:
Guy #1: I get some pretty good mileage with my new Camry 4 cyl. Around 31 MPG combined.
Woman #1: That's about what I get with my 2011 Camry.
Guy #2: I get around 33 MPG with my 2011 Accord.
Guy #3: I get around 30 MPG with my 2012 Chevy Cruze.
Guy #4: Hell, I get around 33 MPG with my new F-150 with a V6. Hey jmonroe, I bet your big V8 can't beat that, can it?
Me: Nope, you're right. My car couldn't get that kind of mileage if it was being towed...down hill...with the wind.
So, just how much better mileage can pickup trucks get today?

The sun has been so hot these past few days that I am sure summer has finally arrived in southeast Florida. So I now have to make a decision about window-tinting the yacht. I made several calls and made contact with my brother who had his cars done to determine the best type of window-tinting material as well as acquiring the best pricing.
From my research, the best available for automotive purposes is the 3M Crystaline. It comes in various shades as well at heat and ultra-violet ray reduction and protection. Since I do not drive very much at night, I am not too concerned with reduced visibility at night, but am interested in a light shade to maximize visibility through the rear window.
The best price I was able to find was $431.10 + tax which includes installation, of course. It usually sells for $479 + tax, but since I am a repeat customer, they are taking off 10%. So, initially, that is my decision, however I am asking my poster buddies out there if you have any other suggestions that I might not have encountered or considered. So, any input? Thanks!

Sticker suggest I can get 20-21 on the highway, though I really doubt it. I am with you, MPG is not why I purchased. I vanpool to work 4 days a week - so this is for the weekends, road trips, dump runs, and occasionally pulling our horse.
My commute is 12 miles each way so if I have to drive now and again it won't break the bank. In 80 miles of mixed driving over the weekend the computer show 15.6 average. We may head to the ocean this coming weekend, that will be a test of what kind of highway mileage we can eek out of it.

So, if the sticker says the EPA estimate on mpg's is 20-21 on the highway, I am sure the truck was tested while going south. Going north, it would get much less!
I don't know much about pickup trucks, but a relative of ours has been into them for awhile now. He drove F-150's, but about 2 years ago he switched to Dodge Ram and has been very happy with the change. Good luck.

In my experience with tint, the installer is as important if not more important than the tint type. If you have had good experiences with this company in the past, you should be able to feel comfortable that they will do a good job.

Mike, I've had after-market tint on all my cars here in the desert. My latest car came with the "best in heat protection tinting", and to tell you the truth I don't notice any difference in how much heat is transfered inside, from my lower cost tinting. Even though I didn't pay the increased premium for it, the only difference I can see is the higher price. My recommendation is to go with a good installer with a good product (3M?) for the least amount. For your car I'd be looking to pay under $250-300, or as close to that as possible.

Mike, it looks like my vacation to South Florida ended just right. In fact we left a week ago today.
I can't give any advice about tinting since I've never had it but I can appreciate the intense heating through car windows because I experienced it first hand while on vacation to Pompano Beach.
The last day we were there it seemed to be worse than other days. I rode in the passenger seat and I could feel it coming through the windshield pretty intensely in the afternoon while driving up to see my Delray Beach SIL and then go out to dinner. I know windshields can't be tinted so you'll have to choose wisely for the rest of the car but any tinting has to be beneficial where you live.

Having lived in the hellhole that is the "valley of the sun" in Arizona for the past three decades or so, I can say without reservation that Huper Optik tint is superior to everything else I've used. It's not especially dark, but cuts the heating from the sun to a remarkable degree. Sometimes when I have my window down and pull up to a stop after exiting the freeway I shut the window and feel the difference.
If you want your vehicle to look like a limo with dark tint, knock yourself out, but if you want stuff that keeps the heat out, this is my recommendation.
@murphydog, that is a nice looking road bully you got there.
It looks like a car inside except a much larger rear seating area. Almost looks like you could throw a mattress on the rear seats and snooze quite comfortably. Maybe you otta try that when Mrs. Murphydog is driving the horse to some distant rodeo's.
Happy snoozing for years to come.

Absolutely not! I don't want dark tint. Besides, the color of the tint has very little to do with the heat resistance and UV reduction. I did look at the 3M website for window tinting and then looked at the Crystaline, which is their premium brand. The tint shade(s) got a bit darker with the higher resistance to heat and UV, but negligible. I want the lightest shade of tint that gets me the most protection. I'll check into Huper Optik down here before making my final decision. Thanks for the tip!

I agree that the installer that does the installation is the single most important aspect of getting a car's windows tinted. I've had 3-4 cars done by this installer and have always been perfectly satisfied with the results.

I'll check into Llumar as well, GG. When I lived in Palm Desert, tinting was a necessity - but the last two cars I had I got away without tinting - but lately, it's been murder down here - so I really have to invest in a tint job.
I'm going to get two quotes - One for side and rear windows, and another for side, rear, front and both sunroof windows. Down here, you are allowed to tint your front windshield, but it must be "clear" tint. It's the heat and UV protection that's important, and with today's advance chemicals and reflective properties, light tints do what dark tints did years ago.

Agreed. And based upon how it's parked I would assume it has a backup camera and 360 degree view.
Yep, the Spark I was driving that had the exploding right front tire did over $1200 damage to the front end, almost ripped the front fender off! The tire was in pieces and the vehicle was not driveable. A really stupid decision to have me drive it when a $50 tow could've been done. Also was a bit scary though I knew things could get squirrely, I was only going about 60 in the far right lane just in case I needed to pull over quickly which, I did!

I wonder how much damage there would have been if you were driving say, a RAM truck, Jeep, full size Impala, mid size Fusion? Maybe the insurance institute should do that test?

I believe this is a response to someone's earlier comparison of a Sonic with a Soul claiming the Soul was safer?
I've read this before about the tire's blowing when driven beyond the warning it was giving of imminent failure. Sandy was right to be concerned when the car should have been towed. But the impression I get is that the tire's failure is somehow the fault of the manufacturer. And the damage done by the company's negligence in having the dangerous tire driven is the fault of the manufacturer. I don't see that at all.
The tire should have been changed to the spare or should have been towed. Luckily Mr. Sandman was not hurt or worse other drivers weren't hurt when the tire blew.
I saw a car just yesterday with a tire that blew but didn't shred into flailing pieces on the side of the road. The tire tread has disengaged itself from the sidewalls and was sitting there. I couldn't tell if damage had been done to the inner fender or other parts, but I assume a tire tread moving at 65 mph relative to the inner fender and suspension parts hit them with great force. It wasa premium exemplar midsize car if I recall.
Talked to several very nice Canadians yesterday. I'm amazing at how pleasant the calls were since I was talking to folks at Canada's taxing agency. A company in which I hold a few shares of stock was taken over by a Canadian company. I filled out the requisite papers to avoid taxation, but I was shocked, shocked, when I opened my first dividend statement from the foreign company to find that Canada had confiscated a goodly share of cash from my dividend. Called the company and was clearly and pleasantly told they don't know nothing about taxing and can't give advice beyond that I had filled out the paperwork and Canada does withhold 15% and similarly the IRS does the same for Canadian citizens receiving dividends from US companies. But he told me where to go and gave phone number for US access. Called that number and talked to one of the clearest and most pleasant bureaucrats who told me she couldn't help me because I needed a special department that handles Part 13 or something similar. She gave me the US access 855 number.
I then called there and the person answering was actually happy to explain how the refunding occurs and doesn't require my filling out another set of papers for Canadian tax refunds. I've had enough interaction with the tax agencies here over my returns lately that I didn't want to fill out more forms.
But my contacts with 3 extra pleasant folks with a beautiful (lack of) accent compared to my Midwest US speech patterns was encouraging. Some of the phone tree recorded messages gave me trouble because of French? accents and my poor hearing in high pitch ranges.
Yesterday turned out to be tax day. I usually check withholdings in May/June to be sure I have the proper escape amounts withheld for April 15. But I got hit with two letters yesterday.

I filled out the requisite papers to avoid taxation, but I was shocked, shocked, when I opened my first dividend statement from the foreign company to find that Canada had confiscated a goodly share of cash from my dividend.
It must be some special way you own those shares. I own Potash in my Roth IRA account and they don't withhold Canadian taxes on the dividends.
Have to hear the rest of the story before commenting imid. We do have two official languages even though 75% of Canadians speak English. The answering machine will usually give the message in English, and then the French part will say if you want to speak French Press 2 or something. You can ignore that part. Canada revenue people are usually pretty polite, unless they suspect something fishy is going on....then they are like barracudas. Since they have YOUR money, they will be nice to you for now.
With 92,500+ miles, the Pilot continues to suit our needs as a family of 5 perfectly (aside from the fact that it isn't blue and doesn't have a power lift gate). Just this past weekend, I was able to load up the 5 of us (Mom & Dad up front, Son #1 & #2 in the 3rd row, Princess in the 2nd row) plus enough toys and gear for a full day at the beach, & still had plenty of space to pick up my wife's cousin.
I noticed the steering wheel shakes above 65 mph. My mechanic said to have the tires balanced 1st, then he'll check the front end to see if any of the tie rods are in need of replacement. This lead me to an "Only in New York" moment.
My mechanic tells me to have the tires balanced at this tire shop not too far from him. They also happen to be a certified Tire Rack installer and get excellent Google reviews. I call the tire shop yesterday and Tony tells me they don't open until 8:30 am. I tell him I have to be at work at 7:30 am and ask if there is a night drop. Tony tells me "no, but leave the keys with Juan at the bodega next door." So I found a parking spot on the street 3 cars in front of this tire shop, dropped my keys off with Juan, jumped on the train 3 stops, then walked 10 minutes to work. From 7:30 to 8:30, there was a thought in the back of my mind that Juan was going to put my Pilot on a boat to Santo Domingo instead of giving it to Tony.
The wheels are currently off now and getting balanced. Tony calls me and tells me that my rear brakes are shot and need to be replaced as do the rotors. I tell him to hold off and will have my mechanic look at it this coming Monday. According to my records, I last had the rear brake pads replaced and rotors resurfaced on 7/2/2013 at 37,289 miles so it does seem appropriate that they are due for replacement. As always, my mechanic will ONLY put genuine HONDA parts on my car.

Agreed, sandman, Chevrolet is not the faulty party if a Chevy Spark driver experiences a tire problem of some sort. One should get a sound tire straight from the factory, but even the dealer would be fixing a bum tire before test drives were ta begin anyway, eh?
GG, you had the brake pads done at 37k miles, then they need doing 55k miles later...so that seems to be legit. I have been told, there are a few things that will have to be done around the 80k mark, once you get over that hump, you will be clear for awhile. That's from a friend who has experienced this several times - that is the only way he buys and keeps cars.
But we talk like normal Americans.....Peter Jennings, Lorne Green, talk without an accent, same as the news anchors on the major news networks.,,,,except we say eh sometimes.
The thinking is since GM has been caught up in the diesel fiasco that might mean the end of using diesels in cars and lighter trucks.
Points at random: This year there are only 10 diesel models for sale in the U.S., half what was offered in 2016. Sales fell to 86,000 last year from 143,000 in 2015, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.
And it’s not just Volkswagen pulling them off the market. Daimler’s Mercedes-Benz isn’t selling four models that were on dealer lots in 2016, and BMW AG has dropped its offering to two from four, selling only its 328 sedan and X5 sport utility vehicle.
The technology required to clean soot and smog-causing oxides of nitrogen will get more expensive as rules get tougher.

I always like trucks in red...though gray is good!
Glad you didn't get this one.....lists $66000!
In the newspaper they showed a V8 that was $28000, but I don't see it in their inventory....not sure what that is all about.

Thanks!

My commute is 12 miles each way so if I have to drive now and again it won't break the bank. In 80 miles of mixed driving over the weekend the computer show 15.6 average. We may head to the ocean this coming weekend, that will be a test of what kind of highway mileage we can eek out of it.

As far as tint brands....I've had really good luck with the Llumar brand, which I think is a ceramic tint.

If you want your vehicle to look like a limo with dark tint, knock yourself out, but if you want stuff that keeps the heat out, this is my recommendation.
It looks like a car inside except a much larger rear seating area. Almost looks like you could throw a mattress on the rear seats and snooze quite comfortably. Maybe you otta try that when Mrs. Murphydog is driving the horse to some distant rodeo's.
Happy snoozing for years to come.

My truck has a 36 gallon tank, so I go a long time between fill ups.

Since trucks get more than 33 MPG these days, getting almost 1200 miles between fill ups ain't so bad.

Agreed. And based upon how it's parked I would assume it has a backup camera and 360 degree view.
Just saw the pictures, great looking truck! That back seat look like it has more of an angle than the Fords, which I find too upright.

2014 Malibu 2LT, 2015 Cruze 2LT,
Talked to several very nice Canadians yesterday.
To be continued.

I have been told, there are a few things that will have to be done around the 80k mark, once you get over that hump, you will be clear for awhile. That's from a friend who has experienced this several times - that is the only way he buys and keeps cars.
