they are right....its a money thing....

for interiors, they just take a can of scotch guard and go over it . for the exterior, same thing, but use a spray gloss. for the undercoat, again, it is already protected, so they just take a can of sealer and go over it....total cost is about $3.99 a can of spray....

I did pay for the extended warranty ....bumper to bumper, but talked them down the price ....to about $1500....it is a lot, but we wanted all to be covered....they were asking $2500. It included the interior carpet...which gets dirty easy, but can be steam cleaned for only $100. I opted for it so if I chose to sell it, then they would change a new one if they could not get out the stains. (my interior is savannah beige, so it gets dirty easier)....

I am picking up my S tommorow and I am excited about it. It is my first Porsche. I am 6' 5" so I could never fit in other Porsches and I have alot of room in the Cay. When I test drove it, it reminded me of my S class that I had but with even better quality interior and felt very hush hush quiet except for the exhaust roar which was great. Having had S class, 745i BMW, and Jag XJ, I feel that this is a perfect combo of luxury and sport. I favor the luxury side more than the sport, but want both. I felt after test drives that the Cay rode much smoother than the X5, the FX, and the ML, and there was no comparison with the roominess and luxury of the interior. I will post after I receive the Cay tommorow and as I said I will have to change my handle since I will no longer have a BMW. I appreciate all the posts, they have been very informative.

Just took delivery of my new Cayenne S with black on black, dark burlwood interior and steering wheel, Nav, turbo wheels, park assist, comfort seats, CD changer, moonroof, sunscreeens, heated seats, etc. Absolute fablous car to sit in and drive. I love luxury and this car has it, even better than previous S Class and 745i, plus the versatility to take others and stuff in style. I am 6' 5" tall and I love the fact that I can sit in this car with perfect seating position, which is always a challenge for me. I have owned or leased over 20 vehicles and I have to say that the professionals at Hendrick Porsche in Charlotte are the best I have ever dealt with. They did what they said they would do and gave a terrific price to boot! I got a CAY S with an MSRP of over $68,000 for about $61K! 54% residual and .25 money factor from porsche on a 36 month lease. Very affordable and a blast as I said to drive. Again, thanks for all the posts, the CAY puts a smile on my face every time I go to get in!

I adore my new black on black with aluminum trim Cayenne Turbo. I bought it first for it's braking ability...it STOPS. In fact you have to be careful not to be rear-ended. I bought it second because it's turbo in all 6 gears, not just in passing. I bought it third because of it's awesome curbside appeal...it's always the car the Valets put at the front of the restaurant.
I surprised myself getting aluminum trim, but All cars have wood-equivalent trims, so this made it special.
I find it the safest car on the road, so surprisingly let my teen drive it.
The negatives: it won't back in a straight line worth a darn...both sides of my lawn are tracked, and I've lived here 20 years without ever hitting the lawn. The remote key system just flat doesn't work...1/2 the time, I leave and find it didn't lock the car. 1/2 the time, I spend ten minutes trying to get INTO the car, especially the back seat. The rear and passenger sides are about useless for the remote key, I have to open them from the drive's side.
Heat is great, A/C is poor, surprisingly because there is a LOT of air pushed.
Navigation is worthless. It takes the only in-dash CD spade to use (dealer lied and said it kept it in memory). Many of the major roads are not listed in the system, and the directions make no sense if you know where you're going. It takes forever to in-put a new road, only to find after ten minutes your particular road isn't listed. It's IMPOSSIBLE to see the map as you drive (only a passenger can help.)
The brakedust is severe, so the rims stay filthy.
The dealership gave the most minimal discussion on the how to use the car on buying (ten minutes max) for a complicated car, leaving out the navigation and triptronic completely, saying they don't work for the first ten miles. (lie)
I DID pay the $3K for the radar (absurd price) but it is FABULOUS!
Can't believe no phone capability in a $101,000 car!
The idiot lights for parking are great, just remember the ones for backing on on the back, not the same as on the front.
I wish it had the Lexus feature of the rear-views going down on backing.
Gas mileage is 7MPH if jack-rabbit, 14 if driving, 16.5 if cruising on highway (like most cars, it gets better mileage at 80 than at 30.)
It sucks oil like gas, so be careful...maybe because it's new.
I like the door-open feature, as there is ALWAYS a door open after car wash or grocery.
Years ago that Porshe Driving experience was FREE, I wonder how much they charge now? There is a free clinic where you just watch THEM explain, but that sounds kind of boring.
Be careful to fully check your car on delivery...they had slipped off the fancy tires and put on regular tires on pick-up.
I ADORE the car, and look forward to driving it a long long time, even if it DID lose $17K in value by driving it off the lot. I have a suspicion these cars will keep more of their value than early signs are indicating.

My Cay S has 1000 miles on it. There is a wheel vibration at 60 to 80 mph. It feels like the wheels are out of balance type of vibration in the steering wheel. The 18 in. wheels have the factory Bridgestone All Weather Tires. The Dealer has tested the tires twice and found them to be within tolerence. They said there is nothing they know of to do. Have any of you had this experience? And, what was the cure?
  • dubsterdubster Member Posts: 45
Hi- I have a similar situation with about 2000 miles on the car. On the next visit to the dealer, which is a little inconvenient, they will test drive it. I have heard some reports about a faulty cardan shaft which produces similar shakes and vibrations, but the dealer has played dumb when I`ve brought it up. It could just be the tires or balancing. We shall see. Let me know how you do and I`ll let you know how I make out on my side.

In the settings menu there is one for signals when the car doors are locked. One signal is that parking lights flash the other is the horn beeps very modestly. Only problem is after a couple of lockings the beep signal is lost. I noticed that setting the horn setting while the engine is running keeps the horn setting functional longer.

On unlocking the car with the button I have noticed it works much better from the front or back than from the sides. Also the double click opening timing is critical.
  • highenderhighender Member Posts: 1,358
went to disney land in the Cayenne. They parked it up front. Then gave us limo service to the front entrance to the park....wow!!

remote antenna is hidden somewhere and cannot get a good signal. If we all complain like the toureg owners do, then perhaps Porsche will put out a bulletin to remap the antenna. "spockcat" at the toureg forum has the info on the rewiring of the antenna, which he said takes about 1 hour....and places the antenna in the front A pillar, and then he can operate the remote from far away...

brake dust is bad also...I brought it in, and the dealer ordered special pads and installled them....and now its better. I think someone here suggested that you wax the rims first,so it all comes off easy....The brakes on all Cayennes are the best....anywhere from 112 to 120 ft from 60 to 0 mph.....awesome!!! In one test It beat the 911 GT3, the best sports car, by about 1 ft...in braking.

My nav works great....never had a single problem .....maybe complain and they will give you a free update or something... :)

the computer will/can adjust whether you want the passenger side mirror to fold down when you are backing up.

yes, it does burn a little oil during break in....but it settles down, unless you go on a long hard trip with mountains, which after 500 or so miles may require a quart of oil.

The gas mileage is great. My Jag XJ12 got only 11 mpg, but it weighs less and had only 302 hp. The Toyota Previa also weighs less, got only 163 hp, but only got 18 to 20 mpg. So as a heavy sports SUV, the cvayenne can get similar to a jag or Toyota minivan , and provide more comfort, more capabilities, and more performance...what a great deal....its relatively a gas miser, compared to all the other cars....!!

the computer will even adjust the type of surround sound. I think it may be the first auto with true surround sound.....the other recent one with it is the Acura TL.

Enjoy your car.....and read the manual...it has lots of interesting tidbits.... :)

    Thanks for the post.

I would love to know more details as this is what I am looking for.

Please let me know how much your drive off was, how many mi/yr and what your monthly payment is. thanks
  • bmwx5jimbmwx5jim Member Posts: 9
MSRP $68,285 Leased for 36 months, 12,000 miles per year. I wanted a low monthly payment so I bought down the lease to make my payment $450 per month. I put $17,500 down. Got the car for $1,500 over invoice. 54% residual, .25 money factor from Porsche. With no money down payment would have been $936 per month. Awesome car with Nav, full wood package including steering wheel, (which is gorgeous), park assist, cd changer, turbo wheels with gold caps, comfort seats, conv. package, bi-xeons, mats, shades, compass, etc.
I love the car and highly recomend it.

What is the cardan shaft and how does it cause vibration in the wheels? How would I know if it is bad?
  • highenderhighender Member Posts: 1,358
I don't know the difference from a cardan shaft vs Canadian draft vs a cart-in-a mining shaft.

what does this dohickey thingamajig do ? :)

    pardon my ignorance.... :(
  • tidestertidester Member Posts: 10,059
It's just a shaft with universal joints at either end.

    tidester, host
  • dubsterdubster Member Posts: 45
Steve - There have been a number of posts regarding vibration and other question marks about the cardan shaft including replacement. Could you shed any light on this? Is this the type of part subject to a break in period? -or- Is it just a part that either works right or doesn`t? When I have brought it up with service at my dealer they seem to feign ignorance about its very existence, let alone any suggestion there could be a problem. Thanks
  • tidestertidester Member Posts: 10,059
I'm not Steve but all I can tell you is that a few owners here and there describe a low pitched hum that kicks in around 50+/- mph that some believe is related to the shaft. I know of no TSBs related to it.

Is a fancy name for the split main drive shaft.

Low frequency wummering followed by vibration as it ages.
  • highenderhighender Member Posts: 1,358
does that happen to all cayennes?

It sounds like it is a part of transmission, and it splits the torque to front and rear ?

so Aisin is responsible for that, right ?

hope all is well with your Cayenne... !
  • mudman2mudman2 Member Posts: 152
No, its not part of the transmission its a stand alone BIG shaft.

It effects early Cayenne production the part was replaced in production mid year.

My baby is still getting me excited, I might take up cruisin'

    haha

Has anyone had experience changing and/or installing the trim on the Cay TT. Is this a do it yourself project. Has anyone seen the carbon fiber trim package and carbon fiber steering wheel.
  • dubsterdubster Member Posts: 45
Finally got the Cay S out otoh and really experienced what this vehicle is capable of. First, I went thru 3 tanks of gas, mainly highway with some small town, 30 mph speed limit thrown in. The results were a relief - 17.5 mpg - after 2000 miles of around the neighborhood got me 9.8 mpg. The morale of that story is -it doesn`t pay to try to set a new land speed record dropping the kids off at school.

The car is absolutely amazingly poised at speed, over potholes, in the rain, on hairpin turns, on dirt roads, you name it. The term grounded comes to mind. The other term you`re likely to hear is "pull over". I was lucky to get only one speeding ticket- an eighty five+ in a 65. I was so guilty all I could come up with was the truth " officer I`m really sorry, it`s my first time out on the highway with the beast" he didn`t even crack a smile.

I travelled with my wife and three kids 10,12,16 and three days of suitcases. It handled the load well and the kids didn`t complain about tight quarters either. The dvd system with wireless headsets is highly recommended.

All in all a great success all around. The next report will come in January or February when I see how the 18" mud and snows work coming down the mountain in Vermont.
  • highenderhighender Member Posts: 1,358
glad you went on a long trip with it...where did you go ?

We went north to Petaluma to go camping...but took the suburban..which also has the DVD and wireless headphones. Took total 5 kids and the 2 of us....had a great time... :)

Yes, at speed the car would eat some gas. I get 14 mpg local, but close to 18 mpg on freeway only. Yes, the cayenne handles like a true Porsche...stops like one, and is amazing for a car/truck... :)

Sorry to hear about your ticket....I almost got one on I-5 down to LA, but slowed to 70 mph, so did not get nabbed...

Does your DVD system hang down from the center of the roof, or are they built into the headrests ? I remember you said something about the dealer having someone install it. I still did not do it. Canepa Designs called me back and said 2 headrests monitors and Playstation 2 , plus one sunvisor monitor would be a whopping $10,000 !...so I am stilll weighing options. Can you describe your system on your Cayenne, and let me know how much again ? thanks...
  • dubsterdubster Member Posts: 45
I had a system put in that includes 2 headrest units- the moon roof prevents the drop down system- with three headsets and a playstation setup. The name of the hardware is Icon I believe there`s a website. It cost me $1600 -plus 45 for the third headset. The visor addon would run another 400-450 if I`m not mistaken. There`s no reason to spend anywhere like 10000, 5000 is too high. At 7" wide max the video doesn`t have to be that state of the art, especially when you`re not going to be in the back seat to enjoy them that often.
  • highenderhighender Member Posts: 1,358
you mean you could fit a 7" screen in the headrest ? That's great....I think I am going to pass on the Canepa Design install...but still have to search for an outfit around here SF/Bay Area, that can do the job without damaging the interior....

For only $1600 you got all that...its a great deal !!!

thanks for the info...now I know what I am shooting for...

BTW, where did they put the DVD/playstation ? Is it under the rear center console, or under front passenger seat ? How was the built quality ? I think we are ready to do it....any advice would be appreciated....thanks.... :)
    Can you send a photo/pic ?
  • dubsterdubster Member Posts: 45
Highender- doesn`t your dealer have a shop that handles after-market electronic stuff (alarms, radar detectors, handsfree cell phones)?
Some of the logical spots for the hardware turned out to be unfeasable or impractical for my personal needs. I opted (not that I had choices) for the rear driver side wheel well cubbie, which turned out real well. The kids can get to it by reaching over every 2 hours as needed to swap a movie. Otherwise its totally remote controlled. Directed is a moderately priced but very solid looking device. Its the player. Icon tv makes the lcd screens and the install is clean looking because the unit overlaps the cutout of the headrest, hiding any messy slicing and dicing. Its much better than a local application I saw where you see the edge butting up to the screen, requiring surgical precision.
All in all I`d say the quality of the system is very adequate. It`s important to remember that the audio end of the a/v works thru the bose system resulting in theater quality acoustics thanks to the confined space or headphones which also give you enhanced effect. The video end of things is less than superb, but we`re talking digital, so how bad can it really be?
If I were more adept at scanning and emailing I`d send you pics, unfortunately that`s more of a project than I can handle right now. Try the directed and icon tv websites. The wireless headphone system is from Unwired.
Unless you are a real glutton for punishment, and I got some kind of amazing deal, you should be able to pull this deal off for no more than $2500.
To repeat -the Icon Tv system of the screen overlapping the leather cuts is key to taking the worry out of the headrest results.

Good luck with it and fire away if you have any other ???`s

I am considering the Cayenne V6 and would like to know about safety. I plan to have a family and am considering the Volvo b/c of safety but the Cayenne blew me away. It is obvious even to someone completely ignorant like me that the Cayenne is far superior to the Volvo performance-wise. But I hesitate b/c there are no crash tests out yet on the Cayenne and the Volvo has an anti-rollover mechanism. Can anyone shed any light on Cayenne safety for infants/children?
  • highenderhighender Member Posts: 1,358
got it....Icon TV, Directed, and Unwired...

I do have a shop in mind, but I will call the dealer today and see if they can refer me to their preferred shop...

sounds like you got a great deal...
and to think the other shops wanted up to $10,000 for the same work....

You have helped me make up my mind, and thanks for the info on location of the DVD player... :)

Just brought my Cayenne to the auto body shop....and got a rent a car .....

    take care....and happy motoring !!

  • dubsterdubster Member Posts: 45
I hope you can find a shop and the components out by you. And you really need to do the research and make sure the caliber of the equipment is up to your standards. I`d hate to send you on a wild goose chase for a system that disappointed you just because I felt satisfied with mine.

    body shop? not again--what happened?
wait --are you going in for the pipe bypass?
    whats going on with that?
  • highenderhighender Member Posts: 1,358
no , I 've been driving the beat up cayenne (accident was mid MAy,)for 2 weeks now, waiting for the insurance claims adjusters to establish liability....but I can't wait any longer...so brought it in today.....

It'll be another 2 weeks before I get it back. :(

Don't worry, I 'll get the components that match and that my local shop are accustomed to. fact is, the quality of all auto electronics have been really high for some time...so I am not really worried about the components....just concerned about the install...

    I'll let you guys know....

I'm still thinking about the fabspeed cat bypass......but think I will do it sometime after I get all the other projects done...

    enjoy... :)
  • highenderhighender Member Posts: 1,358
XC90 is good ...I had a chance to drive it on a course...it was good, and the safety features are great tooo...Its anti roll system is good. I threw away the thick brochures, but kept the pack of seeds....they are very environmentlaly conscious.. :) But at the track, the body roll of the XC90 is significant, at least for me. The tires did try to grip, and squealed a bit.

Handling wise the Cayenne has got one of the best road holding and skidpads and stability systems. It can do the Nurbringen race track that will better most SUVs...perhaps maybe the SRX or fx45 may do a tad better than the V6 Cayenne.

Safety wise, all cayennes come with side curtain airbags, stability control, ultra strong steel passenger compartments, lots of crumple zones. It willl hold the road better than the XC90,and probably the resale value will be better than the Volvo.

I think it boils down to what character you are looking for. Safety wise, I think the 2 are comproble...Xc90 has roll over protection, but cayenne has the ability to avoid the rollover in the first place, since it is more agile and handles better. If you are in the market for a safe vehicle only, plus maybe get extra 2 seats, then get the XC90. But if performance and handling are also important, then perhaps a cayenne would be better.

We considered the xc90, fx45, but settled on the cayenne...cause of the performance.. :)

    good luck...

I think a very big argument in favor of Porsche is its weight. It weighs about 5000 pounds and the heavier your vehicle generally speaking the more likely you are to survive a crash. I really don't think roll over is an issue with Porsche. It stability is magnificent. It also has a great feedback telling you what your vehicle is doing. To my knowledge no other vehicle comes close to it regarding road and vehicle feel. This point is sometimes lost in the word "performance." I traded in a 2001 530i BMW because it just didn't feel safe enough with the present day driving situations. My friend who has another companies SUV (model name withheld) commented the doors on the Porsche felt like they were made out of real metal!

Take a look at Vizual Logic. they have head rest specifically for Porasche Cayenne. Their headrest replace current in place head rest and thus they don't cut to fit your head rest. It cost $1600 at Good Guys. the head rest are perfect color and leather matches. Reason is VL makes leather seats for many car mfg. I have their 7" headrest in my LX 470 and the color and fit is perfect. Screen quality is excellent as well. I'm thinking about installing in my TT as well.
  • highenderhighender Member Posts: 1,358
thanks Joe milliionaire. I will definitely look into it.

My TT is still in the body shop... :(

Other side's insurance company has decided to reject the claim... !

aT least I got the police report, that says it is the other driver's fault....

guess there may be a lawsuit.. :(

Don't forget to add in the pain and suffering from that scalding coffee you spilled :-)

Seriously, that's a bummer - but I bet the other insurance company sees the light soon.

Vizualogic makes a great product- headrest monitors using OEM leather and specs- but unfortunately they are not yet available for the Cayenne, and Vizualogic still has no ETA. I have heard that the hold up is due to an issue regarding the structural integrity of the headrest with the monitor installed. (By the way, they also sell under the "Epik" name- same product.)

You CAN install a drop down screen even with the moon roof, but I found that the screen blocks too much rear view. I am going to hold out awhile and wait for the Vizualogic product issues to be resolved.

And anytime anyone offers to put a DVD, two monitors and a PS in your vehicle for anywhere near even 1/2 of 10 grand, walk as fast as you can out of their establishment.
  • highenderhighender Member Posts: 1,358
lol....and they even made me drop the KK while it was still warm !

oh well....I am letting the insurance companies duke it out.

Got any Jelly beans ? ;)
  • highenderhighender Member Posts: 1,358
yeah, I did not go back to Canepa Design. They wanted 10,000....for that price it was'nt even gold plated ;)

I didn't run out....but guess I should sprint next time...

hope I don't spill my coffee or drop my Krispy Kreme...

Anybody have a problem with the one touch windows? Mine go down fine but don't always work (1 in 10 trys) going back up. Also, just took my first trip from Charlotte, NC to Atlanta. Cay was great but noticed slight steering wheel vibration from about 60 mph to 73 mph. When I went 80 or more, or less than 50 mph, no vibration.
Any comments? I am taking the Cay in next week to have service check it out. My Cay S is only 2 weeks old. I must say that the ride was terrific and the pepper is awesome. Blk/Blk, wood package, turbo wheels, nav, xeons, etc.
  • msingerbmwmsingerbmw Member Posts: 42
I noticed the same thing you did about wheel vibration. I'm just guessing but I think the wheels are in balance but are just slightly out of round from the tire manufacturer. I have heard of some people triming the treads to get their tires in "perfect round."

I've have the same problem. Brought it into the dealer and they have been contacting porsche since May. Don't have it solved yet.

I was considering installing these pipes. Has anyone installed these pipes for their Cayenne? I read in another site that some people are having fault codes appear like the airbag light. Is this a common occurance? Strange, how can these be related?
  • highenderhighender Member Posts: 1,358
mudman has the cat bypass pipes installed, and his website has some nice photos of it. It will be one of my "to do " items....I talked to the dealer , and they said the oxygen sensor light may come on. Nothing about the airbags.

mudman, can you give us the link again ?
  • highenderhighender Member Posts: 1,358
    mine goes down fine too...

but are they supposed to go up in one touch ? would that be more dangerous, since it may catch someones' fingers or arm ? I don't know, but maybe that was built to go up in a few tries, like the locked doors, which need to be pulled twice to open. Just a guess, please let us know if you find out... :)
  • carnut36carnut36 Member Posts: 27
I haven't had any problems with them going up or down by "one touch". I wonder if it's one of the comfort feature settings like the door lock/unlock that need to be set up. I'll check it out tonight.
