Yes, you are right that there is virtually no lag for superchargers, though it may take a sec to build up enough hp to move the mass. I have a supercharger on my suburban, and it has a lot more hp...and you can hear the whine if you step hard on the pedal.
Stillen customized suburbans, but they are just concentrating on Nissan cars now. Gemballa has a tuning program for cayenne, as does Powerchip Company. (the latter is just a chip switch, which may invalidate your warranty.) I think Gemballa also uses turbos, so it may be of no help, but it doesn't hurt to ask. Techart has a program in the works, but not out yet.... Canepa Designs also works widely with superchargers, so you may want to contact them. Did not hear from Renntech yet.
Mudman, you have any idea ? BTW, mudman did install some bypass pipes , which should be good for 10 to 15% increase in hp.
dubster , you are also right about the Cay engine. According to Powerchip co....Porsche detuned the engine to allow for the wide range of gas octane numbers and for less than ideal maintenance. The book also says the engine is capable of more HP, but that the factory thought this tuned version would be enough for now. I suspect future versions will have massaged engines that would boost hp output. Examples of this Porsche tradition can be seen in the many reincarnations of the 911 boxer engines, and the Boxster engine , which has recently been tuned to give more hp with the same displacement. The double catalytic converter actually dampens sound , so much that the cayeene sounds quiet and timid, and has more exhaust back pressure. The Fabspeed bypass pipes would eliminate this backpressure, and get a more hp, without major modifications to the engine. I think I will go that route next.
Yes, the tranny is a smart tranny, and it realizes that there are different drivers, that granny may be slower, more conservative than you. Also, there are days where you may just want to cruise along, and days where you want to zoom. The different shift points allows for your style, yet still lets you modify it on demand. If you consistently drive spiritedly, then the shift points will be more aggressive. This also allows for maximizing fuel economy. If you can keep your foot off the gas, then the shift points will be less aggressive, thus increasing MPG.... It is reallly a wonderful system. Best of both worlds...
As to your noticing the shift points when in the comfort mode, I presume you are talking about the air suspension mode. I think that the comfort only applies to the air dampening of the shocks...softer feel if on comfort mode, stiffer when on sport mode. I do not think it has any direct input into the shift points or engine displacement.
BTW, I also read that the engine has a variable camshaft, that allows for the engine to act like a smaller engine when conservative driving is done, but then increases displacement of the engine when aggressive driving is done...
hey- I would be very interested in hearing how that bypass works. Sounds harmless enough, but with interesting implications. I assume there`s a site to check it out. I`m on my way! Mike
I have the Fabspeed Secondary Cat Bypass pipes. Its a bolt on bolt off design, no cutting.
The Cayenne has 4 cats, in 2 pairs per side. The O2 sensors are in front and behind the first cats, so removing the second pair does not cause any check engine lights.
Its been dyno'ed at +17hp. But the sound on the S is amazing.
wow!!! That is amazing! It sounds almost too easy, almost as if porsche paved the way for the conversion. I`m very tempted , but would love to hear the results before I move on it. -- you know me , it took me months to buy the car in the first place.---anyway, I really appreciate the quick response of the info ..highender, mudman---you guys are great,, I went to fabspeed website They have a virtual test drive of the conversion--do you guys think it sounds to much like 60`s muscle car with those crazy mufflers--or appropriate for this type of vehicle-- and where am I going to notice the 17 hp?
I have the BMC Air Filters on also and I notice the difference in the pick up of the engine, it revs more freely than before and there is a definite increase sheer "GO" if you can imagine the word.
As far as the sound is concerned, when idle it does not burble like a 73 GTO with straight pipes but it does sound like a 93 + Z28 Chevy. You hardly notice inside with the winows closed but you should see the turned heads outside !
but I think the engine will breath better with the cotton air filters, instead of the paper ones, so when my 20,000 or 15,000 miles is up, I am going to get either the BMC or K&N.
Incidentally, mudman, I saw in the latest issue of porsche Excellence mags, that a tuner massaged a 911 engine to give out 100 more horses, and noticed that they used a BMC filter....
Picked up my TT last night after 7 days in the shop tweaking all my electronic niggles....so far(1 day) so good....keep your fingers crossed...so much fun to drive :-)) Thanks to all for your input
Picked up my Cay S yesterday after waiting about 3+ months and I will say that I am very pleased with the feel and performance. The build quality, performance, everyday driveability, and yes the different look than the everyday sedan makes driving the cay pleasurable. I test drove the TT and the acceleration is impressive for such a heavy vehicle. I will say though the S will keep most people very happy with 99%of their driving demands. Highender....I think we have the same color combo which my wife picked out. Love the tan interior but hopefully won't get too soiled easily. The Cay doesn't have all the gadgets and frills of some other I dare say competing suvs but there's nothing like driving the cayanne.
“recent Cayennes have parallel roof rack” “T-equipment add-ons”
Referring to crossbars that carry watersport/bike/ski/cargo on top of the vehicle? I installed the Yakima bar system on my Cayenne and it works fine. Plus, it costs half as much as the Porsche T-equipment. Yakima also makes accessories to its roof racks ( www. Yakima .com ). IMO, as an avid biker and retailer of Yakima products for more than 15 years, Yakima makes the best bike/cargo boxes/watersport available. Yakima’s crossbars, when used with the control towers, can be removed and easily reinstalled at the push of a button.
BTW, what’s the secret? I have never gotten more than 15.5 mpg on my drives from the Bay Area to southern California via I-5, traveling 80-100 mph. Even after resetting, my dashboard computer still miscalculates the mpg; I must use a handheld calculator to derive the real mpg, and it’s never been more than 15.5
thanks for the info about the yakima racks. I have the early tequipment cross bar racks, not the newer "length of roof line" rack. Does yakima fit those older types? I can come to your shop. I'm in East Bay too....
to get over 17 mpg, I went I-5, and was going less than 75 mph most of the way. Not intentionally, it is hard to go that slow in this car, but we went during the Holidays, so I-5 was crowded...sometimes I was only going 60 mph........at that speed, the engine is working very little and easily to carry the weight and did not have to fight tooo much wind...
BTW, don't trust the computer always....it needs to be reset, or it just gives the overall mpg. I just add gas when the computer says to ...and it usually means a 21 gallon tank. So just divide the miles by 21 .... :-)
MPG changes after the first few thousand miles as the engine wears in. I cruise at about 80-85 mostly with a few spirited bursts, and can get 17 ish most of the time. Around town it drops to 14.1, but my commute is not long and its all country roads with lots of stopstarts.
When I bought my cay S about a month ago the dealer offered me "on Star" but when I called back to say I want it the dealer said it is only available the day of purchase. I called On Star and they said it is not available on Porsche. It must have been some bootleg arrangement. Anybody out there know anything about this.
have a Performance SUV comparison test pitting the Cayenne S against the BMW X5 4.4, Infiniti FX45, and Cadillac SRX. Well, according to MT, the Cayenne is, performance wise, NUMBER 1.
We're not talking about straight line numbers, as the FX45's 0-60 time of 6.5 seconds was .4 seconds ahead of the Cayenne. What they are referring to is the fact that the Cayenne lapped the Street Course of Willow Springs International Speedway, in the wet, a whopping 2 seconds ahead of the "quicker" Infiniti, and 4 and 5 seconds ahead of the BMW and Cadillac, respectively.
The overall finishing order was as follows: 1) Cayenne S, 2) FX45, 3) SRX, 4) X5 4.4. Here are a few quotes from the article:
"At the racetrack, we tried repeatedly to upset the Cayenne, make it push, slide, or do anything but track exactly where we pointed. As long as we had our foot firmly planted on the gas, it was nearly impossible to get the Porsche out of shape - even with the stability system defeated. There are sports cars that'd have a tough time making a 1:09 lap in the dry at the Streets of Willow, but the Cayenne did so in the wet"
"Anybody who had his doubts about the Cayenne's abilities was humbled. While it might not be the fastest in a straight line, throw some curves in front of the Porsche and things sort themselves out in a hurry. Our figure-eight test underscored this ability with the Cayenne's clearly superior run, which puts it solidly in the neighborhood of Nissan 350Z Track model or an SVT Mustang Cobra."
"Stand on the brake pedal, however, and the Cayenne S stopped in less distance (111 feet) from 60 mph than a race ready Porsche 911 GT3 (113 feet). From 100 mph, the two Porsches tied at 318 feet - astoundingly good brakes, and the FX45 was a couple feet longer."
"The next time you wish you had a Porsche sports car but need an SUV (and have a stack of U.S. fund coupons or the requisite credit rating), there's one true performance utility that satisfies both criteria. Look no further than the Cayenne S to shame any wannabes - and a few sports cars as well."
WOW....it proves what I have been saying all along....the Cayenne was tested at Nurburingen, and it consistently leaned in the turns as a true Porsche...and had times that were the same as the Boxster (0.91 gs) and BMW M3....!!
make no mistake ...this is truly a sports car disguised as a SUV...!!
I can`t wait to get my hands on that issue. I kept telling my buddies that I can throw a 5000+ lb into turns better than my 330 ci with sport suspension and tires. It`s absolutely unbelievable until you try it. It defies logic. I`m glad I trusted my instincts, and you guys- mud and high etal.
My friend bought an early iteration cay s with 18" all weather`s. I have the new edition mud and snow all weather. These tires really stick, and I mean stick. In all conditions. I don`t know how the 19`s and 20`s compare, but the new 18`s are very well mated to this vehicle. I really push this car. My friend`s car came out with tires not suited for northeast winters. Porsche dealers no longer issue those tires, or shouldn`t try to pass them off on you. So now that it`s warming up and you won`t notice, make sure you get the right "all season" tires. They`re M+S but are real Porsche caliber all season tires.
Bought my wife a 330 ci a couple of years ago. She loves it. Its very nice with the top down and has a suprisingly well insulated top for winter use. My only problem is the sports package which makes it undriveable in snow and those low profile tires invite wheel chips on the passenger side. Otherwise it`s been reliable and fun to drive. I hope to trade it in one day in the not too distant future for something a little more versatile and interesting. Maybe a cs4 or even an audi convertible quattro of course. The problem with my wife is that she`s always in a rush , and doesn`t take care or notice things the way she should. There are dings and scratches and all kind of little abuses that she just doesn`t know how they got there.
I`ll go to the 3 series town hall and see if I can chime in if you`d like me to.
At my first service visit, the Oakland, California, Porsche dealer said (via telephone) a luxury-class loaner would be available. However, the loaner turned out to be an itty-bitty Chevrolet from an off-site rental agency whose personnel kept pushing the “up-sell” to a full-size car upon a $30, $40 payment!
With the lure of a free Mercedes loaner, I went to the Fremont, California, Porsche dealer for my second Cayenne service. Their loaner was a complimentary ML350 (decent - the Mercs have more legroom in the second row). Yet, Fremont’s service bill was more than $200 for the Cayenne oil change and another $135 for tire rotation. And these were discounted coupon rates.
So, what are typical service charges from Porsche dealers for simple oil changes? Can anybody recommend a particular dealer whose service department actually provides service? And treats its customers like VIPs? Thanks.
“Will Yakima fit the older T-equipment crossbars?”
Unfortunately, only the cargo box/basket from Yakima will fit your older Porsche crossbars. Other Yakima accessories will not fit. To avail myself of all Yakima accessories, I use the Yakima crossbars in lieu of the Porsche T-equipment. I’m in Lafayette at Hank and Frank Bicycles on Mount Diablo Blvd. if you need further assistance. Ask for Steve.
I just picked up my new lapis blue cayenne with grey interior. I got a great deal! It is an awesome looking car and I feel like a queen on the road. I am slowly getting used to the power and size, (previously had an RX300) I guess it takes time. A few complaints though; -you have to really slam the rear hatch to close - windshield wipers squeek - headlights have condensation - the piece on the rear wiper flew off the first day (Called the dealer and he asked if I went through the car wash-it had been raining since I picked the car up-and I would only hand wash the car for the first few months-) - any suggestions for car wax and wash- thanks for your suggestions.
In my opinion: 1- rear hatch has to be slammed on all models. Mine does too. the sales man even told me it needs a good slam.....could be a German/ teutonic thing ? ? 2-yes, it is over sensitive sometimes when there is not enough rain, and its on rain sensing intermitent mode...and thus with not enough water, it does not have enough lubrication....but mine got better with time... 3- I never had this problem, but maybe on the west coast it is drier...Someone else here, carnut or ? had the same problem, but he had a fix....it was posted about 3 or 5 months ago .
4- I am using a good wax....and hand buff it...no , my rear wiper housing never fell off....yet,
Folks, I have been using Zaino products for the last 3 years and the results are way beyond ever possible for any Wax type of products. Zaino products are polymer based, not wax based and in fact they request you to remove the wax build up on your vehicle before applying Zaino. It is the easiest product to apply and you have to see the rusults to believe. I have the Cay S in Titanium matellic and my E class is silver. With Zaino, paint finishes come out better than new. Check out their site at zainostore.com
Thanks for the zaino suggestion. I got a lapis blue, msrp, $49,000, 42 month, 12K miles a year for $599, $4200 down (incl. tax, tags, etc.) they had the car coming in, with odd options(sunshade, auto ac, soft look leather) but it is beautiful, the seats are comfy and I am getting used to using the separate garage remote. The auto air works great. I have more than enough power in the V6. I am doing mostly suburb driving so it is certainly quick enough for me. On the highway it is very smooth and fast. Absolutely, a head turner!
which they say is very good..but you piqued my curiosity...
just got hit today,by a person in a parked Tiburon, she just opened her door into traffic, and I was just passing by....another 1 sec and I would be home free...
took it into dealer , and they will use all original parts to replace the damaged ones....
did you see the new motor trend article...which rated Cayenne #1 ?
today in the cay...nothing major, someone opened the door to get out of their car (parked at meter on the strreet) just when I was passing by..at 20 mph...crumpled the front quarter panel, rt front bumper, both rt side doors and broke the rt side view mirror....:( both parties are OK...but its going to be a pain to fix and arrange insurance...etc...
So sorry to hear about your mishap. Sometimes being careful is not enough. I had a slight incident on the 2nd day of ownership 2 weeks ago. While driving past a high school, three students bashed my right mirror with their backpack on purpose. Broke the mirror glass and scratched the passenger glass as well. My wife was heartbroken by we'll get it fixed next week at the dealer. The 'students' ran away. My wife and I just love the car. Good luck on your repairs.
So sorry to hear about your accident. Reading the details, thank God it is minor in that nobody was hurt. Doors and bumpers can be fixed and you won't even notice them. To share in your pain, I had one in my E class the very next day I bought. Audi TT guy hit the rear bumper while I was waiting at the right hand turn. His car was also 1 day old !!!. It is going to happen to everyone sometime or other. I just pray that whenever it happens, let it be something small. Best wishes for the repairs...
Well on the second day that I had mine, I cracked the right mirror housing on the garage door Cost $400 to fix. Then two weeks later, I scaped the right bumper cover against my partner's MB E320's mirror. Just scratches on plastic that I'm just going to touch up over though I guess I have to get used to the Cay's considerably larger size than my BMW 528i.
Just got my first Cay recall. I was actually expecting the parking break/wiring issue recall, but opened it up to find the transfer case problem instead. Good timing - I have a scheduled visit Wednesday for another issue (elective surgery-dvd installation for the kids-). I wondered if anyone knew what the noises referred to in the recall sounded like. Having just 1500 miles on my first Porsche, there are some unidentified noises I`ve been a little concerned about, and have asked to be checked while in for the DVD thing. My noise is a vibration on acceleration from about 500-1000 rpms whether cold or warmed up. It`s a subtle little noise, but every other U.P.N. (unidentified Porsche noise) seems more or less benign. This has always bothered me, but if it wasn`t for this recall I would have expected to find my dealer`s explaination as over sensitivity on my part(wouldn`t be the first time). Now I`m not so sure. It`s a shame they can`t roll the other, soon to be coming down the pike, recall in with this one for convenience sake.
On the other note, regarding DVD system installed by Porsche recommended people. Are they able to install nice screens in the back of the headrests without puckering the leatheraround the perimeter of the screens? I`ve never had a good look at one of these before.
I've been reading this board for a couple of weeks and decided to purchase a V6 a week ago. I've found this board to be extremely helpful, so I thought I would post a couple of questions with hopes that someone may have an answer.
I've encountered a couple of noises that can easily be reproduced and I was just wondering if they're normal.
a. When I open the door for the first time in the morning, it sounds as if there is a motor that is operating something for a couple of seconds. I'm not sure what this is... It sounds like the seats, but I do not have the seat memory option (V6).
b. Upon startup, when I reach exactly 12mph, I can hear a distinct short click/ticking in the center of the engine compartment (sounds like it's directly behind the radio console). It's not the radio/cd though - it's definitely coming from the engine (under the hood somewhere).
Are these normal or should they be investigated?
Thank you in advance for any info you can provide.

I open the door and the seats do move back... to allow easier ingress/egress.
I do not have a ticking or clicking noise at 12 mph.....
suggest go to dealer and get mechanic, not the service advisor, to sit in the vehicle with you and listen to pinpoint the noise...
