I too have had the warped rotors on my 03 Ex-L. Started at about 5000 miles. That's WAY too early way warping. Even my little A4 (whose brakes get used harder than the Accord) have not warped in 23,000 miles.
Our previous 00 Civic began warping badly at 20,000 miles.
I've been told that putting on the parking brake after a spirited drive can cause. However, I don't use the parking brake. My tires were never rotated either.
I love Accord and Honda in general, but their brakes are definitely not the best part of the car. Their drivetrain is what people buy them for.
AS for brakes, I'd recommend throwing some Brembos on the bad boy!!!
Mine warped at around 2K. I now have 9K and know when I bring it into the dealer they are going to ask me the usual questions - car wash, driving through puddles, etc. The fact is there definately is a problem, whether it is a design flaw or the factory over torqued the bolts remains to be seen. I suspect the later based on some peoples comments as a possible cause. I don't expect any problems from the dealer replacing under warrant (great service dept.) BTW, Brembo does not list the '03 Accord for replacements.
according to my manual-sez replace bearing after removing rotor-also has to be pressed in with a press-8# sledge probably won't work. Big PITA-think they changed in 98 or 99 so the rotor can just be unbolted and removed.
Bummer. This may influence my used car search to include the high-mileage early 6th Gen now. I'd hate to have a $300 brake repair. I've become addicted to the <$30 fix.
Just picked up a new 2003 Accord 4cyl auto EX-L last week. It runs great and I love the upscale feel of the leather. (1) I noticed that when driving I have to hold the steering wheel a few degrees to the RIGHT in order to stay straight on the road. If I hold the steering wheel perfectly straight, the car tends to steer LEFT instead of straight. I have read the other posts referring to a "pull to the right". However, my experience is not so much pulling as a general drift to the left. Anyone else have this experience?? I'm taking it to the Dealer on Saturday to check the alignment. (2) Also, I am going to ask them about a paint defect on the rear bumper. It looks like a pebble was painted over when the car was painted. Thanks,
Check your air pressure with a good gauge, according to the pressure recommended on the label on the front door jamb. You've probably got more (or less) in one or the other of the front tires. That's probably why you are feeling the pull to one side.
I have enjoyed reading all the warped rotor comments. I too have had the pleasure starting around 3,500 miles. Since so many people say these water and tight lug nuts... can cause them, I decided, lets see if the 03 Toyota Camry had any complaints of warped rotors. I have only checked the NHTSA site, but didn't see one complaint about it. Their complaints , however, were about brakes failing and having accidents. A little bit worse then warped rotors, but, if it had to do with driving habits, does that only mean 03 Accord drivers have these habits??? I think not!!
I agree fully, which is why I added a complaint on NHTSA. I hated to do it because my dealer was so nice about the issue, but there's too much chatter for this to be such an issue of minority.
I would imagine that by now, as the 2004's will be on their way, we would have had some resolution or a definitive answer of the cause.
Personally I don't believe it is a design flaw, but yet an assembly issue. Hopefully time will tell.
In the meantime, I guess we are to believe that as Honda drivers we are surrounded by puddles and ride the brakes all the way to the carwash.
On my '99 CRV, the lug nuts at Wal-Mart warped my rotors. I'm sure they over tightened them. My car has 82K miles, has had one brake job, and the rotors were never warped until I took it to them for a tire rotation. I'll do my own tire rotations from now on.
"surrounded by puddles and ride the brakes all the way to the carwash."
-LOL, WELL PUT! I better stop driving in the rain, should check my luq nuts, watch our for puddles, not wash my car unless it has been sitting for a few hours, so on and so forth.
Having seen so many complaints here about drifting and warping motors in very low mileage new accord, I am paying close attention to my accord.
My belief is that don't buy into the dealer hoax about rain, car wash and blah blah. The accord has defect, if the dealer and HONDA don't admit, then file your complaints to NHTSA.
They turned them. The rotors are smooth as glass now. You'd think if there was a problem with the rotors they would have immediately warpwed again since they took mass off them. I'm just gonna be more careful when rotating the tires from now on.
My wife's 03 EX-L has had brake pulsing since 4k miles. Word has it that Honda will resurface without charge up to 12k.
Today's metallic brake lining is supposedly the culprit since use of the softer asbestos lining has been stopped for health reasons. A straightforward solution is to either use heavier rotor steel or a stronger rotor alloy, both with performance or cost disadvantages.
I'm not sure what's Honda's next step, but that's almost certainly not to recall all 400,000 cars for the first model year.
Replacing older accords rotors is a real pita and expensive. I think someone said the new ones can be removed by removing 4 or so bolts, after pulling the caliper away from the rotor. If that is the case-wonder what new rotors cost?
Be interesting to see if Honda is listening and fixes the problem for the 04 models.
I wasn't going to bring this to the forum because no one else had mentioned anything like it, but it is driving me nuts and I need some input from you guys.
The day after I bought my 2003 Accord LX I noticed that there were vertical scratches in the driver's side window tint, approximately 5 or 6, of varying lengths and in no pattern whatsoever other than being straight lines. I didn't notice them when I accepted the car because I thought they were streaks in the window from the quick wash it had just been given.
When I found they were scratches by running my fingernail along them, I took it back and the dealer found the window gaskets folded inward so they were replaced as well as the tint (lifetime tint warranty.)
Three days later there were more scratches in the tint, so the car went BACK to the dealer. The gaskets were again folded inward and the technician told me it was likely the tinting shop they use shoving on them during installation. I asked him to remove the door panels and leave them off when it went to be retinted, to prevent the gaskets from being poked at. That solved that problem.
However, MUCH to my chagrin, the window scratches are back, just a little smaller this time and apparently took a little longer to occur. This is probably because it was hot and I was using the A/C more instead of rolling the windows down. However, the scratches are back for the 3rd time. I've only had the car for 3 months and I'm picky about visibility anyway. I should be able to have perfectly clear windows with no scratches in my tint, right? They reduce visibility just above the side view's line of sight.
The dealer's service tech says they can't find anything wrong with the door and is sending it to be retinted, and I'm sure the window tint shop is getting ticked off. I'm starting to get extremely bothered by this, especially because I love my new car and am sick of having to turn it in over and over for the same problem that can't seem to be found.
Anyone have any ideas?
-the door has apparently been fully inspected . . . could I demand a door replacement, since that's the only thing I can think of causing this?
While driving up to the gas pump one day the engine on my 2003 Accord 4 cylinder suddenly accelerated to astronomical RPM’s . I then heard a noise by the shifter and shut the car off. Now after I start the car the Maintenance required light flashes for about 20 seconds after it is started. Any feedback?
and you slide the shifter out of gear while the cc is on, the rpm's will increase until you reach the limiter. then the engine may shut off on it's own(or CC should turn off)... Have had it happen to me, but the clutch or brake shut's off the cc...
Just bought a new 03' Accord EX-v6 in may. There is an irritating rattle that is coming from the passenger dash (right where the tweeter is). Any other 03 EX-V6 Accord owners notice this rattling sound coming from their passenger side dash area? If so, what can I do to fix the dang rattling noises.
i have several rattles coming from dash area as well as headliner around sunroof...and also from front door window area. really like my v6 coupe but am surprised at the amount of come-and-go rattles that i've got! i haven't really said anything to the dealership yet. they prolly won't find the cause anyway. i am hoping that the new door trim they ordered will help cut down on the side window rattles...
I guess you have to expect rattles in any new car that comes out the first year. My rule of thumb is to wait until the 3rd year of a model cycle. isellhondas might dispute this but remember, he sells Hondas for a living.
I asked my dealer about the squeaking noise from my brake. I was told Accord uses semi-metallic pad and that makes the noise. The noise would disappear after several brakings.
Right after I bought my 2003 Accord I noticed an extremely annoying rattle/snap noise coming from the drivers side front. I wasn't able to determine exactly where it was coming from, but it was driving me absolutely crazy. Any time I drove over a slight bump I would hear the noise. I was also having trouble with a grumbling noise coming from the back end. I would hear this noise (and still do) when I take my foot off of the brake and just let the car slowly roll (not apply my foot on the gas peddle)usually when I am backing out of a spot or coasting through a parking lot, etc. This noise started after 2,000-3,000 miles. After it got increasingly worse I brought it in both for the drivers side front snap/rattle noise and the back end grumbling noise. They took care of the front end rattle buy some how going in and tightening up some "clips" under neath the upholstry (over head/door area?). Supposedly there are some clips in frame of the car on the drivers side that were loose. I later found out that this was not just my car that had this problem. So if you have an extremely annoying snap/rattle sound as I have described, go in and tell them you know about the loose clip problem and tell them to fix it. They very well know about it. The noise is pretty much gone now, but i do still hear it when I hit a big bump in the road. at least I don't hear it all of the time now.
As for the grumbling from the back end, I still get it. They did say they replaced my struts, but I'm not really sure what they did because the noise is back. It was gone for a while, but I'm at 16K miles now and I'm still dealing with it. Also, they replaced my front brakes for me (can't remember at how many miles, but I know it was less than 10K miles for sure). I complained because they sounded like they were grinding. The service rep told me that "...because they were very noisy, they went ahead and replaced them for me." I am now noticing that they are gettng noisy once again. I just had my car in for it's 16K service and i told them that I was hearing the grinding noise again. They said that my brakes are probably just dirty, so they will clean them to see if it makes a difference. That was 2 days ago, so we'll see if it helps any???
I have owned strictly Honda's, (have been extremely partial to Honda cars) and have been very satisfied, but I have to say, I am very disappointed having several problems so soon with this car. I have learned first-hand why they always say to wait 3 years before buying a brand new model.
As the owner of a 2000 EX-V6 sedan (3rd year of that generation Accord), I can't say that waiting for the model to mature helped when it came to addressing interior rattles. Our car has them just about everywhere and has been that way since (seemingly) 5 minutes after we got it home from the dealer. I have had to tackle the worst rattles (in the center console/radio and the driver's-side vent/coin holder assembly) on multiple occasions. Our dealer fixed the infamous sunroof rattle under warranty, and the door seals must be cleaned and lubricated with silicon frequently in order to avoid rattles/squeaks from the door frames. Even with the worst offenders fixed for the time being, the car has several intermittent and less-annoying rattles in various quarters (except when driving on the smoothest asphalt). A major disappointment, given Honda's reputation for quality.
It's interesting that both Honda and Toyota are having these problems in their recent models. By many accounts, it appears that they had better assembly quality and materials in the early and mid-1990s. A major reason for this could be that Accords and Camrys cost much less today, adjusting for inflation, than they did 10-15 years ago (especially given the huge increases in safety and luxury content). The MSRP of a 1994 Accord EX-L 4-cylinder auto was $21,550 (~$26,200 in 2002 dollars). A 2003 Accord EX-L auto has an MSRP of $24,160 and is in a different class as far as size, power, luxury, and safety are concerned. Those cost savings had to come from somewhere. I also wouldn't be surprised to hear that manufacturers must use more recyclable and environmentally-friendly plastics today, perhaps with less desirable characteristics when it comes to building a quiet interior.
Of course, maybe we just got a "Friday" car, in which case the rule of thumb should be to avoid new models for at least 2-3 years and avoid cars built on Friday afternoon regardless of how long the model has been on the market.
Hi samironi I have the same exact back end grumbling noise I took to dealer twice at fist they tight the strut bolt and noise was gone for a few days now the noise is back and I brought my car back again and they still can't fix the problem now they told me that they want to contact with Honda motor to see if they know the problem I am personally think that they don't have any clue or what to do. I think one of these day we will find the problem. hooo ! anyway I am still waiting to hear from local honda dealer regarding this problem I own 2003 accord EX-L with navigation I am hopping for luck.
my car had a rattle/grumble that came from the rear shelf area. there is a TSB out that details how to fix this. here is a link to that TSB. you might mention it next time you visit the dealership. it's worth a try anyway...
Hi emale Thanks for your respond regarding and I will try this. Anyway I'm not sure why Honda service don't know about this problem and told over and over that the noise came from the strut and need to contact with honda motor. I hope this will fix the problem.
as usual it seems most service departments don't go out of their way to check things out. then again maybe you said you thought the noise was coming from the rear suspension, and that is where they looked.
mine started doing it right after i took deliver. the sound was akin to a rumble, and then sometimes a rattle. i couldn't tell if it was coming from the rear shelf or under the car somewhere. like a tail pipe hitting something. anyway, i just mentioned that i had a rattle somewhere in the rear area and they fixed it by following that TSB...good luck!
Hi emale I located the noise it is from the strut not from the rear shelf area to hear this noise I have to drive below 5MPH no acceleration or shake the rear wheel from side to side and I heard popping or clicking noise from the strut that atach to the top shelf again I am very sure.
I have the rattling problem since i bought my 03 accord. I am so dissappointed. This is the first new car i bought. Dealer told me it cannot be fixed, and i have to wait. I will not buy any honda.
I have this same problem. I went to dealer and was told they did not know what is wrong. They tried to adjust the spare tire and tools and told me they were quite loose installed. But the noise is still there. When I drived slow, the sound came from back.
Hi,hji I took a test drive with technicain and service manager even told me that the noise came from both of the struts but mine more noise on rear right strut and they need to contact with honda motors first. I don't know why don't they go ahead fix or replace with new part. Anyway if the problem is solve I will let you know.
I have a 1999 Honda Accord and it has had its share of rattles. Ironically, my friend's 1995 Accord has been rattle free since he bought it brand new.
I took a test drive in a 2003 Accord EX V-6 last Saturday. As I drove the car with the salesman the first mile of the test drive, I heard a sunroof rattle and a rattle in the back. I asked him about the rattles and he said; "They don't build them like they use too"! He did mention that the service problem would correct the problem if I bought the car.
I am starting to realize the Honda quality of workmanship isn't what it use to be.
I have a 3 week old 2003 Honda Accord EX V6 and it also has the initial grinding sound. I suspected it was the ABS/TCS doing a self-check and the service folks confirmed it. My old 1993 Volvo 850 GLT also did something similar, but not as pronounced. Nonetheless, I believe all V6 should have the initial self-test sound from the ABS/TCS unit. Other than some weird parallel streaks on the moonroof cover, nothing significant to report. Hope that helps.

I personally believe that it has to do with the ppl who buy these cars and their likelihood to go to these web pages. I had never heard of this 'mycarstats' site before, and if these figures are strictly from this site then they cannot be compared to each other. Only data from surveys of equal amounts of querys from each car can be compared.
There is a TREMENDOUS difference in the numer of Accords and the number of Expeditions on the road. And, certain demographics of car buyers are more likely to use these avenues. Plus, 88 TOTAL car complaints of whatever nature is RIDICULOUSLY low. Look at all the people on edmunds.com who've had something to complain about.
Sure I've complained about my Accord, but I expect a lot from it. I would never have bought a Taurus, but my sister did. And I have SEVERAL complaints about it, but didn't submit them to any boards.
I would be more concerned about the cadillac CTS with 45. how many CTS's are sold in comparison to accords? If you did the math & proportioned the complaints to sales, the CTS wiuld probably have close to 500 complaints, that's if they sold 400,000 units like accord does.
You have to pay to see what the complaints were. Regardless, 88 complaints out of 200,000 sold is not too shabby. I would also tend to agree with those that say the average Accord buyer has higher expectations than the average Sonata, Malibu, etc buyer and are more likely to post even the smallest complaint (i.e, the dome lights come on when I turn the car off).
I took delivery of our new Accord on July 23rd. Right from the get-go I noticed the steering "was a little off". It wasn't the car I test drove. i thought maybe it was just a honda quirk. I decided to wait a little while and see if the problem would go away. This morning I called the service dept. as the steering has gradually gotten worse and is now making alot of noise. The service guy found that there wasn't ANY power steering fluid in the reservoir. He filled it and took it for a short drive. Sure enough the fluid had all leeked out again. He said the power steering rack is shot and he has to order new parts from Honda and fix it all. Fortunately he gave me a loaner.
I can't believe this has happened. I thought Hondas were such great cars and "nothing ever goes wrong with them"!! I'm glad I bought the 100k warrranty!! to think I sold my Subaru (with No problems in 50K miles) to buy this car. I'm really pissed right now!!
Has anybody else had a similiar experience with their Honda or can offer me some words of encouragement.
There have been a few radio's go bad, a few creaks, a few bad tires, shuddering seats, and one guy had to get a new engine. A bad rack isn't that bad. Now if you need three of them in 10,000 miles, you may have a problem. But not every one of them is perfect. I think J.D. Powers said a little over 100 problems per 100 cars. I guess you can chalk yourself up as one of those 100.
Sounds like you must have blown a seal. May have been caused by contaminated fluid or bad seal during assembly. Not rare or catastrophic at all.
After your rack is replaced, the odds of your Accord living up to your expectations are fairly good. I bought my '01 new in Dec2000 and to this day have had no leaks (oil, transmission, coolant,P.S.fluid, brake fluid) whatsoever.
In the 102K miles to date, I've only had to replace routine fluids, filters, front brake pads(@68K), tires(@81K) and I replaced the spark plugs this morning. BTW, the gaps of the original platinum plugs were still within the 1-1.1mm tolerances.

I can't believe this has happened. I thought Hondas were such great cars and "nothing ever goes wrong with them"!! I'm glad I bought the 100k warrranty!! to think I sold my Subaru (with No problems in 50K miles) to buy this car. I'm really pissed right now!!
Has anybody else had a similiar experience with their Honda or can offer me some words of encouragement.
thanks to all.
Sounds like you must have blown a seal. May have been caused by contaminated fluid or bad seal during assembly. Not rare or catastrophic at all.
In the 102K miles to date, I've only had to replace routine fluids, filters, front brake pads(@68K), tires(@81K) and I replaced the spark plugs this morning. BTW, the gaps of the original platinum plugs were still within the 1-1.1mm tolerances.
Good luck with yours after your repairs.
