Has anyone heard of any planned rebates or special finance offers for the 2008 Elantras. I'm buying a car for my daughter and want side air bags, good crash ratings, traction control (we live in ice and snow country) and decent gas mileage. I can't seem to find any models that offer this other than the 2008 Elantra SE.
  • butterflytiffbutterflytiff Member Posts: 26
ah - it is automatic cause I can't drive stick. Good point on the XM. When I go tomorrow I will ask about it.
  • butterflytiffbutterflytiff Member Posts: 26
how did you get it for 15600? they will only go to 16345 for me w/ everything
  • butterflytiffbutterflytiff Member Posts: 26
16100 out the door w/ xm
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
You're right, no really good alternatives with all those attributes. Your best bets might be the Optima (hard to find with ESC though), the new Accord LX (kind of pricey), and maybe the Rabbit. None of those have fuel economy quite as good as the Elantra, but come pretty close. The Sonata is another option if a "Acceptable" IIHS side crash test score is OK with you (but the Optima, Accord, and Elantra are unknows there, which might be worse).

We won't know about rebates on the 2008 Elantra until the new incentives come out for October. I think it depends on how many 2007s are left on the lots at that time.

I bought a 2006 Honda Civic for my daughter excellent cash rating, side air bags, and very good gas mileage. We where looking at the Elantra for 2 months, I was not pleased with the fact there is no 2007 data by consumer guide on the new model. Other bloggers earlier in the year stated problems with over-loading the trunk with regards to the rear suspension. Over all Car sales are down by 9% 9/19/07
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
The Civic is a nice car, but except for the high-zoot Si it doesn't have ESC available as that buyer wanted.

I'm going to be buying an 07' Elantra in the next week or so, looking for the GLS with pop package, I read through this and have seen people get it for 14400 or 14200 OTD. So far the only place that has gotten back to me has had a list price of 15700 or so. I am a recent college grad and thinking about using that rebate as well (as long as I get the interest rate around 5%) so should I be trying to get it for around 14000 OTD or is that too low? I figure 1400 in incentives, the Sales Tax here is 5%, I am definitely not going to go over 14500 OTD at this point though, especially considering I am looking for a manual and not an Auto.

I guess that 14400 OTD was with an auto? The person didn't say. I really don't want to wait any longer but I guess if I think I can get it for under 14000 OTD it would be worth waiting. Any advice or thoughts on if I should be able to get 14000 OTD or what would be a reasonable price down here? There are 3 dealerships within about 60-100 miles that I am trying to deal with, it seems most of them just carry the auto with GLS so I may have to settle for that.

Also any advice on negotiating or how to deal with the dealer as far as getting them to throw in extras like mats and stuff would be greatly appreciated, not important but I see people getting that thrown in and stuff, I guess it just depends on the dealer.
  • bhmr59bhmr59 Member Posts: 1,602
That's surprising to hear since it is the opposite of my experience and three people I know. But, the instances I know of had all called the dealership ahead of time and had a contact to ask for.
  • butterflytiffbutterflytiff Member Posts: 26
My friend and I were walk ins. only went up there as I had heard good things about the dealers up there. The honda dealer really didn't take me too seriously either. I don't understand. I was ready to buy. Maybe because I am a woman? I don't know. was strange.
  • butterflytiffbutterflytiff Member Posts: 26
so the car I am getting has xm - and carpeted floor mats
(rte. 22 - Maxon Hyundai) Elantra SE w/ XM - in seattle blue w/ gray interior - $16100 out the door.

Is this a good deal? This will be my first car and I am really excited - just nervous that I will get a bad deal.

Also nervous because one of the dealers in Wayne told me that the SE doesn't come w/ AC standard - that it is an additional package - but on Hyundai it lists it as part of the SE - so I don't understand. I know the one I am getting has it - but worried that I might be missing something if it is all packaged separately.

I have been emailing around and Jersey City said they couldn't go that low or lower - One in upstate NY said they would get back to me but didn't think they could beat it
  • bhmr59bhmr59 Member Posts: 1,602
If you weren't totally turned-off, check their internet pricing and then call them saying you are ready to buy.

Who knows what they were thinking? Maybe the guys you saw thought you were just out "looking" and didn't take you seriously (not that that would have been an excuse).

If you do that, I think you'll have a completely different experience...but I could be wrong. Give it a try, make a phone call, you have nothing to lose.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
You are correct, A/C is standard on the SE (but not on the GLS). Don't you love it when you know more about the basic features of the car than the salesperson? :P

You are getting a rare car now... it appears Seattle Blue is gone for 2008. I really liked that color.
  • butterflytiffbutterflytiff Member Posts: 26
:) I really like the seattle blue - that is the only color I wanted.

It is funny when you know more than they do - and amazing how nice they are on the phone when they know you know exactly what you want.

    dsu000,

just some things you should know about the college grad rebate. to get the rebate, you have to finance with hyundai, and hyundai doesn't offer rates anywhere near 5% (in fact, no non-credit union banks offer rates anywhere near that either, and even most credit unions are closer to 6%). From what i have researched about the college grad money, hyundai will put you in their B tier credit rating (providing you have great credit) and the rate will start close to 10%.
  • dsu000dsu000 Member Posts: 4
Thanks for the info, I haven't been able to get any type of rates from them. I am getting my dad to cosign for me so I can get a decent rate, but I think I will try to eschew the financing through the dealer if that's the kind of interest rate I am looking at.
  • dsu000dsu000 Member Posts: 4
Well I have been talking to the guy over the phone who has what I want, and I think I am looking at around 15000 OTD for GLS manual with preferred, it's not as good as what I have seen some people post but I think that is a fair price and what I am going to go with, other OTD's I have been quoted around here are all around 16200 (that being the lowest) but those are for auto's, so I am probably going to pick that up on Monday
  • nthenthe Member Posts: 414
you have to take some people's price with a grain of salt. Some have bought from huge mega dealerships that actually are selling the cars for a loss, but only to make their monthly quota to get money from hyundai. If you aren't close to one, don't expect 3-4k off these cars. the car you are looking at stickers for 15,700, and with the 1000 rebate you are doing very good to get OTD for 15. Includeing the holdback on the gls manual elantra, there is only about 600-700 in markup on the car.
  • butterflytiffbutterflytiff Member Posts: 26
No one ever said if this is a good deal...

    Also
Warranty is 5 years 60000 miles bumper to bumper and 10years 100000 miles powertrain
Is there an additional warranty I should get?
  • alamocityalamocity Member Posts: 680
I think what might help is if you broke down the price, as you know tax rates vary as do other associated fees. They do have additional warranties you can purchase but my understanding is that the price has gone up on them quite a bit
  • butterflytiffbutterflytiff Member Posts: 26
how would I break it down? I am in NJ - and i just know that the 16100 is the total price w/ taxes and fees etc.
  • dsu000dsu000 Member Posts: 4
Yeah, that's pretty much what I have been thinking, I am comfortable with them making their 4-5% on the car and it's going to be right under my optimal monthly payment with room to put more toward the principle as I go on. Thanks for the feedback, I wish I was buying it today, I have to wait till Monday... I have never had a car less than six years old, and nothing reliable at all so this is going to be a pretty big upgrade haha (driving an 89 olds right now)
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
If you want additional peace of mind you can get the Hyundai extended warranty, which extends bumper-to-bumper coverage to 10 years/100k miles and is transferrable. Be sure to shop around though if you want that--you can get it from any dealer. I found about $300 difference in quotes when I looked into it for my Elantra a few years ago (I decided not to get it though).
  • nthenthe Member Posts: 414
i doubt they are making even that much with this price, but if you are comfortable with that price, then go for it. holdback is around 2%, and they have to be giving some, if not all of it at the price quote.
  • butterflytiffbutterflytiff Member Posts: 26
thanks for the info! So I can buy the car - have the basic warranty and shop around for the extended warranty?
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Yes, you should confirm this with the dealer, but when I bought my two Elantras (2001 and 2004) I had 12 months or 12k miles, whichever came first, to add the Hyundai extended warranty. They even sent me letters close to the 1 year mark trying to sell the warranty to me.
  • alamocityalamocity Member Posts: 680
Well as an example the sales tax rate in Texas is 6.25%, DMV fees are $127.05, Documentation Fees are $50.00, and Texas Inventory Fees are .002543 X Selling price of vehicle. As for the warranty the prices on them did go up early this year, for the gold plan I've seen them range from $1436 for the 10 yr 100K with $100.00 deductible to $1621 for the 10 yr 100K with zero deductible.

Hey, just wanted to say your making a good choice. My wife loves her 07 Elantra.

As for the price I got her... she traded in her 1997 Saturn(bucket), which was virtually worthless to the dealer. But they are advertising(im sure you've seen the ads) 4,000 off any trade in no matter what the condition. Of course there's a catch, but you can use this as leverage when getting a good deal.

If you dont have a trade in, I still think you can manage 15,600. How many times have you been back to the dealership? One trick I think works good is to go at night around 7:30, 8(they close at 9) This will make them work harder because they dont have a lot of time to screw you around, and they want to make the deal and get home already. Just be willing to be in there late(I didnt leave until close to 11).

    Here are a few tips:
    1. They are not your friends, so don't go for the "your stealing the car from me" bit. They can afford to take a hit, and you can't!
    2. Make them tell you no, again and again until you leave. They will act like they cant budge on a price, and when you express your absolute unmovableness, they will come better.
    3. Once you set your OTD price, make sure they honor that to the tee. I made my Finance Manager change the paperwork 3 times because the numbers the salesman quoted me kept creeping up on the paperwork. If they say 15,800 OTD make sure its that and not a penny more. They can move the numbers around and make it work. Dont take no for an answer.
    4. They include window etching for like $300 on your invoice, so use this as a bargaining tool as well. If they dont take this off, then make them throw in mud guards (appr.$75), cargo tray(appr.$80), window rain gaurds (appr.$80), or maybe an automatic starter, whatever you like and think will justify this $300.

I wish I would have had someone to help me through my first two Hyundai purchases so its my pleasure to reach back and try and make your experience as good as mine. Nothing feels better than getting what you want, at a great price.
  • butterflytiffbutterflytiff Member Posts: 26
    Thank you! :)
I am glad I got them down to 16100 OTD - would be nice if I could get another couple of hundred. Will definitely look into the added fees. This would make a huge difference to me since my original goal was only to spend 1200OTD and was going to go w/ a used car but then fell in love with this one when I rented it from Enterprise.

I haven't actually been to the dealership - everything was done over the phone and email. And as much as I want the car - I am prepared to walk away if anything seems hinky to me.

I am apparently a sucker for a great car - and a PRETTY car. So happy this dealer had this one on the lot. And happy I have options.

Hudson Hyundai called me last night and said that if this doesn't work out for me - they try to switch the numbers etc. that they will be more than happy to sell me my car - but that they hope it works out for me. They really are nice.

I am going over soon to Maxon (w/ a relative) so wish me luck! I can't wait to have my first car!

:confuse: Okay everyone - this is the breakdown:

    Price of unit: $15,138.85
    Options: $ 1,690.00
    Etching: $ 199.00
    Tax: $ 1,191.95
    CB fee: $ 27.00
    Reg/Title: $ 265.00
    Doc Fee: $ 289.00

    Total: $18,808.30
    Down: $ 5,000.00
    Rebate: $ 1,000.00

Had Lojack added - Had 36 months of Basic Maintenance Added - Had Total Loss Protection added

(they went down to half off the total loss)

Was going to be 16100 OTD - they went down to 16000 OTD - then I added above mentioned extras. Yup - that is where they make their money. ;)

Got carpeted floor mats and a cargo net - something at least.
  • alamocityalamocity Member Posts: 680
As long as you are happy that is the main thing. Dealer definitely made up the difference in price in some areas that's for sure. Good luck with your search on the extended warranty, from what I've seen it jumps up considerably after 5,000 miles so make sure you look at that as well. Enjoy your car, hard part is over now.
  • butterflytiffbutterflytiff Member Posts: 26
:shades: Thanks! I will def. compare prices on the extended warranty!

What is the depreciation rate on the Hyundai? Also - how can I find out when my car was "born"
  • sammy2007sammy2007 Member Posts: 3
I am begging for the information about the price of this car. I'm in Madison, WI and I received the quote that 07 Elantra (red) GLS is 16,780 which is including destination charged ($595) and detailed service fee ($120). So, the final price $15,252 after the rebate. It is not OTD, though.

Since I was communicating on the phone and email, that is the only information I know. I was surprised by this price which is a lot more than I expected. May be it is because of the package. When I asked to the dealer, she said that it has a air conditiong and CD player. But, still isn't is too much? If the sales tax and titling fee are added, OTD will be increased a lot.

I read many postings that people buy this model under OTD of 15,000. Would you guys please give me information????
  • simmsimm Member Posts: 6
I was curious to think what people thought about the deal I just got. I purchsed a 07 elantra (white) automatic with the preferred package but no xm. Here is the break down:

14,843-2,000 rebate-500 military rebate-500 because the vehicle had 493 miles on it=11,843 plus tax, lisc. The car is brand new but is a wash out. A person previously tried to purchase the vehicle but could not get financing so they had to give it back. DMV recongnizes it as a used because a person was in the process of purchasing it but hyundai recongnizes it as new and I got all the new car rebates with the new car warranty and financing. The reason why no xm is because it was an earlier 07 model that did not have xm available at that time. Let me know what you think. Thanks
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
That seems like a high price for a '07 GLS with A/C and CD as the only options. (You didn't say it has an automatic so I'm assuming it doesn't.) If that's the best you can do, if I were you I'd make some calls or send emails to dealers in Milwaukee and NW Chicago to see what what kind of deal they might give you. Even if you don't want to drive all the way down there, you could use their pricing as leverage in Madison.

Also, what is the "detailed service fee" for?
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Pretty darn good deal I'd say.

I recently bought a Hyundai Elantra 2007, gls automatic transmission, preferred package for $15,400 with carpet mats, OTD price, including taxes and other fees. I live in California and got the 2,000 factory rebate. I'm wondering what you guys think. Did I pay too much and what should I do to get a better price next time. I did research, contacted several dealers to get quotes, and other tips such as having written offers from other dealers and shopping around. i could have shopped more but gsettle for that price. please let me know what u guys think. By the way, how do I check when the car was manufactured?

I really like the XM option and i'm debating whether I will keep it after the 3 months.
  • sammy2007sammy2007 Member Posts: 3
Thanks for the reply. I really appreciate. It is automatic. Since there is no other competitior in Madison, consumers do not have many options... :(

I asked the dealer what kind of package it has as well as what is detailed service fee is. But I did not receive answer yet....

I might wait for another months to get information. Thanks again!

The manufacture date is on a plate attached to the driver's door sill/A pillar (I don't remember which off-hand).

I just bought my Elantra on Friday 9/28/07 in Roseville, CA. When I first arrived at the dealership I was hoping to get an SE but there were none with the colors I wanted. So, I got a GLS and the added alloy wheels and window tinting included in the above OTD price. I also got a cargo net and floor mats...not sure if that is standard or not so I thought it was worth mentioning. They did, however, get me to buy the extended warranty for $1995 and their gap insurance. These are not included in the above OTD price I listed since they aren't part of the cost of the car. I'm thinking I got taken on the extended warranty and the gap insurance but I have 30 days to cancel the warranty if I want to...not sure about the gap insurance. But, I am very happy with the vehicle and the price I got with the little extras to make it as close to the SE as possible.

So, any feedback you can offer would be wonderful so I can make a decision on whether to cancel those items.

    Thanks!
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
The extended warranty price seems high, although you didn't say how much just the warranty cost. You could shop around at other dealers for the warranty (assuming it's a Hyundai extended warranty) and if you find a better price, cancel the other one. You can buy the Hyundai extended warranty from any Hyundai dealer.
  • g_designerg_designer Member Posts: 18
I agree with the guy about getting more quotes. but quotes can be all over the board.

I would also use carsdirect.com's calculator. They came up with prices within 100 and 200 bucks of the lowest quotes i got. they know usually up on any rebates available. and you also can plug in what options you want. Pretty accurate. No, you don't have to pay for this service.

I used my carsdirect price as a benchmark when i went in for negotiating... it helped me make sure they don't talk me into a higher price than I should pay.
  • jewlzfirejewlzfire Member Posts: 2
I paid $1995 for the extended warranty. I'm thinking I should have paid far far less. Please let me know what you think. Thanks!
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Yes I agree--I think it should be closer to $1000 than $2000. Call around to the finance managers (or whoever does quotes on warranties) at all the Hyundai dealers in your area to see what they'll do for you. I bet you'll find they'll be a lot less than $1995.
  • nthenthe Member Posts: 414
if you are happy with your purchase price, then no, you didn't pay too much.
  • zcorezcore Member Posts: 2
Found a dealer who matched the rebate price I would have got on an 07.

Gave me mudguards and carpet mats...
2008 White GLS MT for $14400 OTD on 9/30/07 (No rebates)

1 other dealer matched the price.
Another offered me $15500 OTD (rebate included) for an 07.
He said there was "No Way" I'd get an 08 for $14400
That I'd get to the dealership and they'd bump it up on me.

    Dealership was honest and true.

    Southern States in Raleigh, NC.

Does anyone know how much the extended warranty should go for?

    It doesn't really seem necessary.

Also how much should oil changes cost?

    Thanks,
    Z.
  • zcorezcore Member Posts: 2
    Oh yeah.

    I forgot the above included:

Option Package 02/AB Popular Equipment Package
Includes vehicle with standard equipment, air conditioning, 172-watt AM/FM stereo, XM satellite radio, single disc CD player, MP3 playback, tweeters, auxiliary input jack, in-glass antenna, fog lights, cruise control, dual illuminated vanity mirrors and windshield shade band.

    OTD for $14400
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Last time I checked around for the Hyundai extended warranty on an Elantra, it was a few years ago but I got a quote under $1000. They went as high as $1200. So call around to several dealers (you can buy it from any dealer) and ask for their best price.

I don't know what the going rate is for an oil change in NC. In the Twin Cities, $25 +/- is pretty common, including inspections and fluid top-offs. But it's also common for dealers, including my local Hyundai dealer, to give you free oil changes for life if you buy a new car there.
