I believe what your saying concerning your buying experience however I have done pretty much all you did , and still am stuck with a price otd of 1490. 10 dealerships including Glendora Hyundai will go no lower, so I am at a bit of a loss as to what to do. I guess Ill take a few days to consider the options

You are right and you make a good point brunoJ... despite what some around here seem to think and say, there are some areas where you can't get a better deal, period..... I've tried everything short of going in with actual cash in the form of dollar bills in my hand and the dealerships won't budge... below mid 18's - I have had two offers in the 17's but they were for cars I didn't want, so what's the use of that...

Hang in there and keep trying.... I intend to also, but I'm getting to the point of probably either giving up or not buying anything for now.

I first offered 14000 out the door, they countered with 16000 i then came up to 14800 and they said the best they could do was 15035 . So Im not being screwed, lol, however i think i might be able to get it down to around 14,400 if i wait all the different dealers out, its get to be a bit much though, however i guess to the winner goes the spoils

If you want to buy for $14,400, and you have the time, go in to each dealer and offer to buy for that amount in writing until one sells you the car.
If none accept your offer and sell you the car, raise your offer or switch to another car.
  • nanotubenanotube Member Posts: 30
bruno, if you have time, stick to your $14400 and let the dealers know you are buying it within a month, not a week. I am guessing in two weeks towards the end of this month, you'll perhaps be getting calls from dealers willing to bulge.

With the 08's on the horizon, there's no reason for the 07 price to rise unless they are almost sold out.

It's these type of games that make my stomach turn at the thought of buying another car. Carmax is looking better and better.

Amen iris...you made the point very well...

Most sane people have little time or patience for such finageling and car-salesman shenanigans.........and simply want a fair deal and the opportunity to take a new car home without living forever in suspicion that they were ripped-off. In truth, the vast majority of people have no idea if they were ripped-off but strongly suspect that they were (and they probably really were).

I can't speak for CARMAX but the pricing I've done there made me surely think that they seemed overpriced....

Good luck, though, whatever you decide to do.
  • brunojoebrunojoe Member Posts: 22
Well Ive gotten the price down to 12800 net so out the door would be 14280, by the way the calculation for tax and license in los angeles is 10.5 % of the Msrp or the net price?
  • irismgirismg Member Posts: 345
Well, I agree even Carmax may not be the ideal solution, either, but I'd almost rather go through eBay than to put up with car salespeople. I wish Wal-Mart sold cars. At least you'd know you got a good price, and all you'd need do is go in pick it out and drive off with it, knowing you had 90 days to take it back if you got a bad one.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Sales tax is figured on the net price. In some states the tax is calculated before the rebate is applied, and in some states it's after the rebate. I don't know which it is in CA, but your dealer's finance person will know what to do.

(P.S. I know that at least in my state, MN, sales tax is figured after the trade-in, if any, is deducted. That helps justify trading in a car vs. selling it yourself.)
  • nanotubenanotube Member Posts: 30
Hi bruno this is exactly the same price I was getting. Do you plan to push it even lower like joe suggested?

You know in CA tax varies by county and mine is below 8%. I believe you will pay (12800+2000+license)*(1+tax%)+document fees-2000, since the $2000 rebate is considered paid back to you as part of down payment.
  • caazcaaz Member Posts: 209
In Ca..... i.e. my msrp was 17380..i was taxed on that amount @ 8.25% = 18,813 minus 2095 ( my negotiated price) minus 2,000 rebate totaling 14,718 OTD take off tax 1338 = 13,330 my price before taxes for my Se auto
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
CA taxes on MSRP?? Wow, and I thought MN was bad for taxes!
  • caazcaaz Member Posts: 209
Actually you're right Backy....i didnt think about it and didnt have the contract in front of me...was paraphrasing my deal....taxes would be on my 13380 plus the 2,000 rebate..yes we pay tax on the rebate.

Now, I live in Korea and have plan to go to Atlanta at Aug,9
I am wondering the good price Elantra 2007 SE auto. I think 15500 OTD is good deal. Am I right? Also, I have interest in Elantra 2007 GLS auto+ preferred package(no sunroof). please let me know reasonable price of those cars. Thank you for your help. Give me advice... please
  • loyolamdloyolamd Member Posts: 3
I think I did pretty good with my OTD. I went to a couple of dealers and they really were not budging on price. It also did not help that the dealers had only a few SE models available. The first dealer came down $500 from their initial offer to $16,047. It was not what I was looking to pay as a result I left. The second dealer beat there 1st dealers price for a car with a slightly higher MSRP. I was also able to get the dealer to knock off dealer prep. This car has the pinstripes and the other one did not. The MSRP was $17666 with an OTD price of $15,900.
  • bhmr59bhmr59 Member Posts: 1,602
Yes, $15,500 OTD would be a good price. I don't know what kind of deals are available in the Atlanta area.

    Good Luck.
  • brunojoebrunojoe Member Posts: 22
Ok folks, Bought my gls silver w/preferred package OTD for 14280 I think thats pretty near the bottom without the college grad 400 off, Costa Mesa Hyundai was the dealer, a little bit of last minute dickering and then they folded, yeah!
  • mshmsh2121mshmsh2121 Member Posts: 2
Thank you guys. your advices surely will help me.
So, I may consider 15900 OTD SE Auto. just one more thing,
Last year, I graduated university in korea, and will enter Emory university graduate school this fall. Then, can I get college grad rebate? I have no idea about this rebate.
loyalamd.. you mean 15900 OTD price is available? and
brunojoe.. Is your car GLS auto? and your OTD price include colleage grad rebate?

Please keep your fingers crossed for my buying a car^^

    P.S I think buying a car and using English are very difficult -.-;;
  • loyolamdloyolamd Member Posts: 3
Yes, I was able to get the car OTD for $15,900.

Other than the pin stripes, this car had the XM radio and cargo mat as compared to the first dealer. I think the first dealers MSRP was 17395.

I tried to get this dealer to $15,700 but that did not happen. I may have tried another dealer but I needed to get a car. My old car, a 2005 Toyota Corolla S, was totaled by a Nissan Pathfinder that ran a red light at 54 mph. Since my car was totaled I did not have a trade in car.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Unfortunately, the college grad rebate offer specifically says: "Applicants must be graduates of U.S. universities." :(

Good luck on your car buying journey!

P.S. I think your English is quite good--much better than my Korean! :)

My daughter just bought a GLS with package 03, XM, and floor mats for 14,300 OTD in Virginia. Price includes the $1,000 rebate but no other discounts, i.e recent grad, etc. I'm starting to get calls from dealers I visited a month or so ago - I think anyone buying an Elantra before the end of this month can push hard for a low price.

Which dealership was this ? I live in Maryland and am looking to purchase.
  • zoomzoomitiszoomzoomitis Member Posts: 45
Let me guess. Fairfax Hyundai. Dealt with 'em and liked 'em.
  • atomicpinkatomicpink Member Posts: 2
Will being very specific in the type of Elantra I want hurt me in negotiating a lower price?

I want a black pearl 07 Elantra with the preferred package and sunroof. The dealership I would like to deal with does not have any of these on the lot (although I was told they could order whatever I wanted). Another local dealer does have some 07's w/Preferred + Sunroof, but not in black pearl.

If I have them order me exactly what I want will I not get as low of an deal as if I took what was already on the lot?
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Dealers would rather sell what they have on their lot. If they have to trade with another dealer, you could be hit at minimum with transportation charges to get the car to your dealership, if it's a significant distance.

But if you really have to have a specific color and equipment level, stick to your guns. You may have to pay a little more, but maybe it's worth a little more money to you to get exactly the car you want?

Also, I am surprised your dealer told you they can "order" anything you want. Unless the car allocation process has changed for Hyundai, dealers don't actually get to "order" specific colors and packages from the factory--they are allocated by the factory, and the dealers find out what they are getting while the cars are in transit. Maybe the dealer meant they can trade with another dealer for what you want?
  • remag1234remag1234 Member Posts: 32
You must be VERY SPECIFIC as to color, equipment, if not you will have to be flexible with accessories, color etc., and that's where you will almost always pay more. Always remember to compare oranges to oranges. The dealer will note that you are set on specifics and cannot play any switcheroo games.

    atomicpink,

what state do you live in?
  • atomicpinkatomicpink Member Posts: 2
nthe, I live in Ohio. Most of the dealerships seem to have the GLS w/Preferred, just not Preferred + sunroof. I guess I can be flexible on that.

Backy, I think he did mean trade.
  • nthenthe Member Posts: 414
the dealership i work for has exactly what you are looking for, the only problem is i am in alabama.
  • pattyrazpattyraz Member Posts: 9
Went to buy a GLS w/Preferred offered 14,400 OTD which is reasonable for the time of year and other bloggers comments, was told NO ONE in western NY will sell at that price in a very aggravated manner. 15700 OTD was the price. I left of course, the economy is changing, the subprime fallout will be felt in many areas and Jet Blue offers one-way tickets for as little as $69,00. Western New York many stand on pride, while the rest of the country turns a profit regardless of how small.
  • nanotubenanotube Member Posts: 30
Before you start blaming anybody else did you realize in some part of the country Hyundai has $2,000 rebate while perhaps in NY only $1,000?
  • pattyrazpattyraz Member Posts: 9
fully aware of that fact, Cal. 2000 rebate. blogger bought a car in Virginia for 14,300 OTD There rebate is $1000.
  • hyundaiman3hyundaiman3 Member Posts: 12
Yes - it was my daughter who bought the Elantra GLS with Package 03 for 14,300 out the door (with $1000 rebate). Same dealer has about 20 elantras left - I think if I were negotiating right now that I could get it for 14,000 OTD in Virginia. Only difference with NY would be sales tax - about $600 less in VA than in NY. Good luck Pattyraz.
  • pattyrazpattyraz Member Posts: 9
    Thank you for that information
  • tkcoloradotkcolorado Member Posts: 39
Good for you!!! There are TONS of dealerships all over, so just keep it up. Last year our dealership here in Colorado had 4 elantras still sitting in December (the last years model) and they wanted them gone. They couldn't give them away. They had a loaded one with leather and all the bells and whistles sitting at 12500, and it sat at that price for almost 2 months before it finally sold.

I purchased an '07 Elantra today. Sticker MSRP: $16,855. We did not buy at the dealer we test drove at. Test drove a GLS with moonroof on Monday, but w/o XM. First dealer would only do $16,150 OTD. Called/e-mailed several other dealers. Ended up at a volume dealer in NH ninety minutes away. Purchased a GLS today w/preferred package (incl. XM), and mud guards, and floor mats for $14,200 OTD.

Salesman initially offered $14,857 + $299 dealer fees. We went back and forth three times, each time he getting up to speak with Sales Manager. Hope this helps.

I've been to two different dealers now and both have offered (without me asking) to show me their invoice price. Seems kind of strange to be so open (maybe it's my general distrust of car salespeople) but I was wondering if the invoice price is just a gimmick or what? From the invoice price the MSRP was only marked up about $400 which seems odd. So on a $16,880 GLS (w/ preferred package) the invoice was around $16,400. The dealer was only willing to go down to invoice plus the rebate ($16,880 - $400 - $1000 = ~$15,000). The numbers aren't exact but $15,000 was the price I was quoted before taxes and title, etc. I see a lot of people getting their GLS's w/ preferred package a lot cheaper OTD. I'm just suspisious and wondering if anyone else had the dealer offer to show you the invoice.

    Thanks,

    Bruce

Good OTD price. NH doesn't have sales tax right?
  • vtelantravtelantra Member Posts: 2
NH does not have tax. When we go to register in VT we will offset the tax by the value our our Private Party sale, so tax will be nominal.

Re: invoice. Yes, we too were told about invoice. BUT 1) remember that even options have a lower invoice price, and 2) invoice is not the whole picture. Dealers often get incentives we don't see. This was a volume dealer (37 Elantras on the lot last weekend), so we made that point as I wrote on offer on scrap paper and signed my name. Using prices from other dealers can help...www.autofairhyundai.com
Click on "Specials" at the top right. Use those prices as a starting point with your dealer.

I got my wife a good deal(I think) on a black elantra SE with the black interior. We paid 15,600 OTD including taxes and fees. At Maxon in Union NJ. They are advertising a 4,000 discount on any trade in, in any condition. We traded in her 2007 Saturn S2 w/o a radio(stolen) or a rear window(broken to take the radio). She's happy with it so, I'm happy.

I bought an Elantra GLS with preferred pkg #3, floor mats and mud guards for OTD price of $14,000 in a Northern Virginia dealer. Did all negotiations via internet/email - very smooth transaction. I bought in the last week of July. There was a $1000 rebate from Hyundai.
  • thecincykidthecincykid Member Posts: 3
The current $1000 rebate on the Elantra ends on 09/04. Anyone know whether it'll be upped?

I'm wondering whether I should try to buy at the end of this month or wait to see if the rebate goes up and buy then.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Automakers never release their rebate plans ahead of time, but an HMA exec did say in the July sales press release that supplies of Elantras and Accents are increasing--they have been relatively short so far this year. That could mean higher rebates for September, especially for the leftover '07s. Or maybe not. :) If you are a Hyundai owner, it would be interesting to see if the loyalty rebate returns--Elantra is one of the few Hyundais without one.
  • nthenthe Member Posts: 414
14,400 OTD for a car that stickers for 16,600 is NOT reasonable. I sell these every day, and you can't get a sale price (before taxes) even close to 14,400.
  • nthenthe Member Posts: 414
scan a copy of your buyer's order and post it here for us to see. This is the only way to know your TRUE price paid.
  • alamocityalamocity Member Posts: 680
Can people get the Elantra for $14,400 out the door, yes but only if the dealership is willing to give up the holdback, advertising fees, sales tax is at or below 6.25 and Title and license fees around $200.00 roughly. Will dealerships do it for everyone, no, in fact most will refuse the offer but as the infamous bobst posted a long time ago you won't know until you try.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Also it can happen under special circumstances, e.g. a dealership needs just another sale or two to earn an incentive that month. In that case, timing is everything.

Or another set of special circumstances... the buyer qualifies for all rebates (currently $1900-2900 on the Elantra depending on location), gets a great discount, and maybe a special "rebate" or two from the dealer, e.g. a "loyalty" rebate for customers of the dealership or other such thing. Or maybe a one-only loss leader special, and you are the one to get there early and get the car. But these are not everyday circumstances that every buyer can take advantage of.
  • nthenthe Member Posts: 414

the dealership would also have to sell the car for a LOSS, not just give up the holdback and ad fee.
  • alamocityalamocity Member Posts: 680
I was curious so did some research and discovered that Fitzgerald Auto Mall shows the GLS model with the 03 Pref package and floor mats for $14,214.00 so if you lived in a state with no sales tax the $14,400.00 would then be possible. Are they selling it at a loss, don't know however with the 08 models coming in I'd think that they are.
  • nthenthe Member Posts: 414
Once again, untill some of the people posting here who claim to have bought this car for 14,400 out the door post their bill of sale, i find if very hard to believe this price.

the 08s are still 1-2 months away, and just cause they are arriving, it doesn't make sense for any dealer to sell these at a loss. the 08s actually went up in price, and won't have a rebate to begin with.
