Thanks for the input. About where I thought it would be value wise. I do own it free and clear, paid cash for it when I bought it

I am growing more used to the engine, so I'm keeping it for a while. Putting 15K per year in mileage on a car, it doesnt make much sense to trade up. Maybe if they bring out an Elantra Turbo at some point in the next couple years.

Elantra's are selling fast. Lot of bang for the buck in this car. I got my non-Nav Limited for 19500 this past January, so based on what the car is selling for on lots right now, I got a hell of a good deal.

I don't doubt that some dealer out there will do it.

We're not discounting them in my market, some dealers near me won't sell "hot" colors (White and Black) for even sticker. It's like anything else, supply vs demand. Want a 2011 Genesis? Do I have a deal for you....

Right now the toughest car is a GLS with the Package. We do have one Limited gathering dust.. a white one, came in on Friday and it didn't sell today... that's the longest I have seen a White Limited last on the lot since May.
  • im_brentwoodim_brentwood Member Posts: 4,883
Really it depends on your market, but we just had someone trade up from an Elantra Limited to a Sonata Limited, 3600 mile Black no navi 2011, we took a deposit on it within 48 hours for $20,800 Certified.

i know what you mean about the hot color thingy.i recently purchased a few month's ago a 2012 elantra gls base model with the black exterior and the beige interior which was very difficult for my dealer to get according to them but the color combination is fantastic and i get lots of compliments on it although the seats do stain very easily.
  • sarah_janesarah_jane Member Posts: 5
Thank you for your response! Those are all great points and I know that the Elantra is a great car and a great deal at MSRP already. For the time being, I'm assuming that it's more worthwhile to continue saving up a sizable downpayment if I'm going to be paying the same amount, or maybe less, in the near future.
Just because I'm stubborn, I think I will wait another month or two just to see if people take a break from car shopping (i.e. stalking Elantras) to travel and save for holiday presents!
  • steven39steven39 Member Posts: 636
waiting a few month's to purchase a elantra might be better since the dealers are not budgeing on the car now since it's selling like hot-cakes.maybe in a few month's all the excitment will die down and you will get a better deal.
  • marlenelinmarlenelin Member Posts: 87
I can't believe the price increase in the Elantra. I bought the 2011 sedan when it first came out and paid $16,500 for it. I have 9,000 miles on it and love it. I helped my friend negotiate a lease deal with nothing down and $154 a month back in January when I bought my car. Her daughter has unfortunately totaled it. The insurance company told her that the car saved her daughter's life. I tried to negotiate a lease deal for her now and they want $3,000 down and $215 a month for the 2012. They said the car has gone up $4,000 in the new model year. Are there any changes from the 2011 to the 2012? Marlene
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
The MSRP did not go up $4,000. Maybe their sales price went up $4,000.
  • drew11mdrew11m Guest Posts: 85
Aside from the Eco on/off switch changing from no usage other than informing the driver whether they are driving gently or now to a computer mod that permitting a more MPG friendly gear ratio/engine usage that can be turned on or off, there is nothing at all different.

The only difference is its way more popular, and dealers are getting top dollar..

The 2012 GLS also comes with Fog Lamps, 2011 did not, and the 2011 GLS, you could get the Nav. System, 2012 is N/A. Mines a Sky Blue Metallic GLS w/nav. Think I'll stay with mine.
  • marlenelinmarlenelin Member Posts: 87
I don't have nav. We have garmins in two cars, one mine and one my daughter's. The occasional time my husband needs it, he borrows mine. I LOVE my elantra sedan. I traded a 2009 Touring for it. The Touring was just too bumpy of a ride for me when I started having some kidney stone issues. We also have a 2008 Elantra sedan that my daughter has at college. I love that car as well and when she was in Europe this summer, I drove her car to keep the mileage down on mine. Gas mileage though is not as good as I expected on the 2011. We average around 30 mpg. We got 41 once making a concerted effort to drive no more than 50 mph and not put the foot on the gas when going downhill. My husband was doing the experiment since he had never seen the car go up to 40 mpg before. Marlene

The Elantra is on our short list, as well as the Accent and we've decided to wait until 2012 to consider either. I prefer the Elantra though over all the cars on the list. But we've decided to let the supply ramp up on all our choices and just wait a bit longer. We fixed the a/c on our Mazda3 this month and hope it'll behave for awhile longer, figured spending $400 and keeping it was better than spending clost to $20k at this juncture. And we know a Hyundai will be reliable as we already have a '08 Accent in the family which has been great...I've been using it as my d d the last few weeks and it's the perfect size...I would prefer a bit more power though.

Though we're only getting a small price break, my wife will be buying a '12 Elantra Limited in the next day or three.

    Done. :D

My wife is now the proud owner of a 2012 Elantra Limited. Sky Blue Metallic with Tech Package (Navi, Rear Camera, Proximity Entry, 360 W Stereo) and several PIAs: mats, wheel locks, cargo net/mat. Price was $23,300 before TTL. That's only about $365 off MSRP but given market conditions and that it's still more than $2K cheaper than her next choice, the Cruze, we felt it was a good enough deal.

TTL adds another $2K: 7% sales tax + doc fees/1st year registration.

    Hey everyone,

So I purchased a 2012 Elantra, GLS, M/T at my local dealership for $17035. After everything was said and done, the total came to $18362 ( tax = 1034, documentation fee = 214). I'm just really worried that I paid too much. Did I? I've been reading the OTC prices that some have posted and I'm just wondering if those include tax and everything b/c if they do then I need someone to tell me how to renegotiate.

Btw, they told me it would take 2-4 wks to get the car. Now they're saying it'll take another 2-3 months for a silver M/T. They're offering a GLS A/T for $700 more if I need the car sooner. Is that a good deal?

I have no idea what to do. This is my first car purchase and no one seems to know what to do. I need your advice!
  • fushigifushigi Member Posts: 1,459
You can go to Hyundaiusa.com and build your car to see what MSRP runs.

Examples: 2012 Elantra GLS M/T and nothing else is $17,205 (with shipping). Change it to an A/T and add $1000.

So it sounds like you're getting at least a little bit off the list price of the car. So while it may be possible to get it cheaper, you're not being ripped off.

You are not getting ripped off. You just need to decide what is most important to you--to wait for exactly what you want or to take something else now.

I "settled" for a 2011 Elantra with auto last December. I ended up trading it in on 2012 Elantra manual this August.

Can they get a manual transmission in a different color sooner?

The 2011 Limited had fog lights
  • mikeystoy5mikeystoy5 Member Posts: 56
I was talking about a 2011 GLS compared to a 2012 GLS. The 11 doesn't have Fog Lights an the 12 the Nav.System is not availible. Unless your in Canada, then the 2011 did have Fog Lights.

Congrats! I took delivery of a white Limited about 3 weeks ago. LOVE IT! Also have the tech package. My price was about the same as yours. So far I'm averaging 33.5 mpg. Love everything about this car! One thing I get nervous about is the fact there is NO ignition switch at all. Hope the push button start never fails.

Good luck with the new car. I know you will love it!....by the way, so far I've found the stereo sounds best with faded one notch toward rear and the bass and mid range turned up 2 notches, with the treble turned down 3 notches. Also, keep the auto volume control on.....

    Happy Trails!
  • fushigifushigi Member Posts: 1,459
I'll pass your stereo suggestions along. While my wife normally isn't much for cranking the tunes, she did say after driving home last night that she could feel the sound from the door speakers against her legs so I know she had it up some. :surprise: I've given her a 16GB USB thumb drive to dump music on so she can leave tunes in the car without mucking with connecting her Android phone via either USB or BT whenever she hops in for her 10 minute commute. We've both gotten rather spoiled by the hard drive music storage in my Outlander GT and the thumb drive is the closest equivalent.

She probably won't get EPA MPG economy on a daily basis as her commute is only 3 miles & that's generally not enough for an engine to get fully warmed up. But we're looking forward to it being better than the '01 Elantra it's replacing and definitely looking for better highway economy. I've also told her about the ECO light so she can train her right foot to go a little lighter.

We definitely have different driving styles. Though she'd never admit it she has a tendency to punch the throttle more on takeoff than I do. That said, she normally stops around maybe 3600-4K RPM. When I, OTOH, do let loose & leadfoot it I've no problem running to redline (my CUV will hit 90 in 3rd gear  ).

Besides the navi, (disregarding my cars) this is her first vehicle with a rear camera, sunroof, TCS/VSC, ABS, satellite radio, heated seats, pushbutton start, proximity entry, and so on. She's committed evenings to slowly RTFMs so she knows how most things work. We even waited in the garage last night to see how long the headlights & interior lights stay on after exiting the car.

The only disappointment so far is, of course, the lack of a spare tire. She's going to think about buying one but we'll probably hold off until at least when the roadside assistance runs out.

I envy the 10 minute drive. Mine is 42 miles in each direction! One reason I chose the Elantra. Yeah, the back up camera is a pretty cool feature. Never thought I would get spoiled by something like that but I already have. Good luck with your new car!
  • wlbrown9wlbrown9 Member Posts: 867
Looks to me the Preferred Package on the GLS is what includes the Fog Lamps, not the base GLS.

I read somewhere that Hyundai modified the suspension a little for 2012 to answer some ride issue complaints in the 2011s.
  • fushigifushigi Member Posts: 1,459
When I do go to the office my drive is 23 miles each way. No highway; all suburban. But to be honest I work from home about 90% of the time.

About 3 weeks after buying my Outlander, I told the wife that cameras are now a must-have for me. I really like how much better you can see behind the car with them. Not only in parking lots but just backing out of our driveway since our neighborhood has lots of young children.

They said they can't but when I made the purchase, I was told it would be 2-4 weeks. I made plans around that and now I'm worried that if I do end up walking away, it would take me even longer to get a car.

I guess they lie to all customers to keep them from considering other options.

Anybody know where I can get one for 17k as some of the previous posters claim? So far I found out that the manual is a rare find to start with, some is offering the auto for 19k something. This is all before taxes. I don't care if it's north or south california, i'm willing to drive to get my car :( any info is highly appreciated.
  • steven39steven39 Member Posts: 636
according to edmunds.com.you should be able to get a 2012 elantra gls base model with manual tranny for $16,900.00 which is the invoice price.
  • missruemissrue Member Posts: 5
know anyone who's gotten it for less? do you think any dealer would go as low as $16,500 which is the MSRP on hyundai's site?
  • dailydriver78dailydriver78 Member Posts: 2
The price I got from their website is 16445 plus 760 freight, so total is $17,205. Only problem is nobody is selling it for this price if they do have one. All the quote i'm getting is for an auto and priced at above 19k...

I know cars usually start to decrease in price when there's a new model so do any of you know if hyundai will come out with a 2013 model? I know there won't be a redesign anytime soon but do since they came out with a '10, '11 & '12, will there be a newer better model in 8 months?
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Don't expect the 2013 to be much different than the 2011-2012. It's possible Hyundai will do a few tweaks to the Elantra then, but usually mid-gen refreshes come after 3 years--think 2014. It won't be a "new model" though.

Maybe by 2013 the newness of the Elantra will wear off plus with more competition from Japan (new Sentra, improved Mazda3, new Impreza, maybe a new Corolla) prices may come down a bit. Maybe.
  • steven39steven39 Member Posts: 636
hyundai should consider comeing out with a performance version of the elantra.an SE model with sport suspension, maybe a turbo motor, some nice wheels,ect...
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Maybe the new Elantra coupe will be the "sport" variant... a follow-on to the Tiburon, which was based on the Elantra.
  • npahlnpahl Member Posts: 1
Hyundai's new Elantra may have a few updates to it's ultra modern sub-compact sedan.
Some tweaks to packages are normal with a new model. So far, the car is the best car, in it's class, to date. It gets 40mpg hwy and 30mpg city. Period.
There is a 1000 mile break in period, which means, start calculating your mpg's after that. I leased my GLS August 10th, 2011, and have 1200 freeway miles on it, so far. The mpg on the window sticker is right on!
This is my 3rd new car lease in 10 years. I think I'll keep this one, maybe, and I'll be getting me some great Michelins after my new tires wear out.

I've had a deposit on a 2012 GLS with Preferred package for 2 weeks. This one was built in Alabama. Yesterday they called and said it had just come off the truck and I might be able to get it late in the afternoon. 20 minutes later they call back and say it is not the one they had listed on my order, this one came from Korea but was identical. Told them I would take it. 15 minutes later they call back and said the identical GLS from Alabama just came off another truck. Told them I would take either one, first one ready. About an hour later they called back and said neither would be ready to drive or sell until at least tomorrow, something to do with getting the paperwork. So, the wait is just about over.

GLS w/preferred package, floor mats, cargo tray, cargo net, destination $19,055
    Dealer doc fee $399
Estimated TN sales tax is a few dollars over $1500
TN tags will be another $100-120

I will be using the $500 matching funds from Hyundai through Motozuma, so my net will be between $20,500 & $20,600 or so. I will probably finance about $8K for 3 years with the 1.9% Hyundai deal.

Update, dealer just called and I can pick it up (after completing the paperwork, writing them a check, etc.) this afternoon on the way home.

I'll report on the Motozuma experience with the dealer. My saleswoman had not heard of that when I show it to her 2 weeks ago. She was supposed to show it to the sale manager or finance guys. I'm hoping it will not be an issue since Hyundai does list it on their site.

    that's a pretty good trade-in offer on a msrp of $18,480.00 which i think is indicitive of the elantra's excelent trade-in value's..

I'd say that is a good price, does it include the destination fee? In San Antonio the market value is $20.726

I've been reading this forum off and on for the past few months and notice many of you mention that you put down a deposit at your local dealership to reserve your Elantra. I live in the Charlotte area and have been working with a local, smaller dealer who won't let me put down a deposit to hold the car we want for us when it comes in (looking for a '12 Silver Limited with Black Interior, no nav). I first visited them 4 months ago, and told them what I was looking for. They put me on their "list" - fast forward to now - so earlier this week they told me the exact car I wanted was coming in on Thursday (today). They told me to come in quickly when it arrived, since the light colors "go fast." I asked if there was any way to put a deposit down to hold the car - they said the only thing they could do for me was to let me purchase the car by the VIN number before the car arrived at the dealership, that way it would be sold right as it came off the truck. We weren't that comfortable purchasing a car without even seeing it. Anyway so I got the call this morning, saying the car had just come in. I told the salesman I would come in as soon as I got off work - well, right as I was leaving the office they called and told me it was sold. I'm really annoyed. How does the deposit process work at some of the dealerships y'all are working with?
  • mikeystoy5mikeystoy5 Member Posts: 56
Maybe you should check out other dealers within a few hours drive. You can go to hyundaiusa.com. Then look for dealer locater and check out other dealers, for example, I found 2 silver limiteds at bob johnson hyundai in raleigh. It doesn't say what the interior colors are, but I'm sure if you called they would tell you. Just an idea to help ya.

I went by Wolfchase Hyundai here in Memphis 9/21 finally ready to purchase. I first looked back in April/May. I found the sales person I had talked with standing out front. We went in and talked a little. They pulled up there expected Elantra list. A GLS with Preferred package, floor mats, cargo net, cargo mat and Ipod cable showed it might ship from Alabama as early as that week. Discussing with her, she said I could reserve it (refundable deposit) with a few hundred deposit. I did that on the spot. It finally arrived 10/5 early afternoon about an hour after an identical GLS from Korea. They had problems getting the electronic invoices so I was not able to pick it up until last night, 10/6.

I guess it depends on the dealer. Don't know why they would do it. If someone put down a deposit then decided against the purchase when it came it and it still sells with 48 hours, does not seem if the dealer would be taking any chances. Its not like you are ordering something from the factory that would be hard to sell.
  • katherinenjkatherinenj Member Posts: 14
Thanks Mikey! I will check them out, and start branching out to other area dealers. I don't mind putting a deposit down at all. I think it's ridiculous to be asked to purchase a car in full before even seeing it...

The Elantra is so hot down here in South Florida that they don't even have any at the dealer near our house to even test drive. Hoping that the supply will catch up with the demand in the near future so those of us who wanna check the car out will be able to. Same goes for the new Accent...tough to even try the product when they have almost none to test drive. Very frustrating to say the least!

Yeah, my wife's test drive for a 2012 Elantra Limited w/Tech was a used 2011 GLS w/out tech. It was enough to convince her to go Elantra over the Cruze, her second choice.

We ordered from upcoming dealer allocation, got her 2nd choice for color, and had to wait about 2 weeks for it to arrive. They gave a small discount off MSRP.

She's still getting used to it & hasn't RTFMed to find out the small features.

I did the same thing back Sept 3. My dealer had no 2012 on the lot. I had to drive the 2011 GLS, even though I was interested in the limited w/Tech package. And that's what I ended up with. In white. I was just in the righth place at the right time. I was in the dealer to see how much I could get on trade for my 2003 Mazda6...It was a Saturday. While I was there a trailer full of Elantras showed up...with mine on it! Didn't know it was mine at the time, but it was the only one on the truck that was a limited with the Tech package....and white was one my of preferred colors. So 3 hours later, I picked up my new car.......Lucky me!

After a little over a month I LOVE this car. Averaging 33 miles per gallon. Very happy so far.

i ran into a similar situation a few month's ago.recieved a call from my local hyundai dealer saying that the elantra that i was interested in(2012 elantra gls base model with auto in black exterior with beige interior) was comeing in to the dealership via truck on a monday morning and that if i wanted a good shot at purchasing the car that i should be at the dealership when the truck arrived at about 12 noon. i was running a little late due to the stormy weather we were haveing at the time and got to the dealership about 12:30.when i arrived there the truck was outside with about 8 elantra's on the truck including the one that i was interested in.a small crowd had gathered around the truck as the elantra's were being off-loaded from the truck.the salesmen said that my car as well as all of the elantra's being off-loaded from the truck were all sold on the spot before i got there.i guess when a car is hot,it's hot......

Here is what we paid in Southern California on our 2012 Hyundai Elantra and then I will tell how long it took to arrive, and the Finance director attempt to upsell us as well. Please be firm and do not buy these HORRIBLE profit center items for the dealership.

2012 WHITE GLS Automatic transmission, beige interior, with Preferred package, IPod cable, carpeted floor mats, and auto dimming mirror with homelink.
    MSRP 19,150
Invoice 18,475 (includes dest fees of 760) (did not include adv fees) no invoice ever will

actual selling price 18,741 $(266 over invoice) (-$409 below MSRP)
Doc fees $55.00 (CA allowable amount)

    Taxes (1456.69)
    License Fee (122)
    Registration CA DMV titleing (100)
    CA tire FEES (8.75)

    OTD pricing 20,483.44

Trade in for a 1997 Cadillac Seville SLS in good shape with 111K was ($2200) making the cash price $18,483.44
ALL in ALL what we thought was a GREAT deal

Now here is some helpful information some of the things finance wants you to buy (this is where the dealership makes most of their money as well as the interest they charge on financed cars) when they sell you a new car

here is what they pitched to us and approximate cost as I am doing this from memory

An extra 5 yr 50K mile Vehicle Service plan (VSP) (4 diff options) (2795)
A Skylink system (anti theft device) (795)
    A Cilajet exterior/interior protective sealant (830)
A tire and basic package (517)

They quoted us these prices and then after we mentioned we were costco member at the ? by the finance manage when we did not bite at the initial offering, the prices came way down

Costco pricing (why did we not get this optional ? first), because quite simply it is 100% profit for the dealer and commission for the finance person.

THE VSP (now went down to ($1,270)
    Skylink (dropped to $315)
    Cilajet (now done to 279)
The tire and basic package (now down to 300)

Since it was still all profit we told the dealership NO DEAL as Howie Mandel would have said and walked out the door with our new toy

Here is how long it took us to find one we researched for about 2 months test drove a sonata and an Elantra, a CRUZE, a camry, A Mazda 6, and a HONDA Civic (all 4 door sedans with comparable features) and decided we liked the price/value and ride best in the ELANTRA, Sonata and Civic EX-L ranked 1,2 and 3 respectively.
We started shopping at CARMAX then did internet quote request, visited the dealerships that we had set up appointments with at certain times.
Got internet quotes from reasonable to we dont sell the ELANTRA at less than MSRP, so we went with the most reasonable offer and then others were sent emails to see if they could match or beat the offer and they could not so we ended up driving about 45-50 minutes away to buy the car and on Friday Oct 7, 2011 we became owners of a 2012 ELANTRA

    20,483.44 with all described items
