    Mitsin,

There are currently no APR deals.

Hmm..Ford has some really tempting offers currently . With 8K Off on Fusion and Mustangs would a Sonata really be a better buy and value with just 4.5K Off ? Although its not a apple to apple comparison as the Ford is 2008 model year and the Hyundai is 2009. Still a 8K discount seems significant .

    Thanks!

Where are you seeing $8k off Fusions? I am seeing only about $4k off in my area. One dealer is offering 21% off any 2008 Milan--that would be a little over $4k on a base model. Also, keep in mind the 2008 Fulans do not have ESC--don't know if that is an important feature to you or not.

The Hyundai dealer I would go to is $4K (plus $500 owner loyalty for those who qualify) under INVOICE. However, if Ford is offering $8K under MSRP, that's a great deal.
  • m6userm6user Member Posts: 3,181
That's a great price. $14906 (not including the graduate rebate).

I think that might be the lowest I've seen for a 09 GLS auto. Congrats.
  • m6userm6user Member Posts: 3,181
I haven't seen any deals like that reported or even advertised in Chicago area. I might be interested in a Milan if I could get $8k off MSRP.
  • mitsinmitsin Member Posts: 19
Almost every dealer in South Bay has been offering 8K off Mustangs.
10K if you qualify for owner loyalty. I didnt check too much on the oher models but Fusion had Focus had 3K+ off and Fusion 8K 0ff.

One of them even offered 12.5K off the Mustang GT all from the MSRP. I am almost convinced that the mustang makes better bargain at this price. Check out Frontier Ford or Sunnyvale ford in the San Jose area . They have ads with these specials. Plus Ford seems to be running some extra discounts specific to CA.

    Thanks!

the Hyundai dealer here in Fayetteville, NC, has added a "market adjustment" sticker to up the "MSRP" on the Sonatas. This new "adjustment" adds $1995 to the cost of the car (just$5 less than the 2k rebates). Is anyone else seeing this type of shennanigans in their area?
  • m6userm6user Member Posts: 3,181
That's pretty shocking. When there are dealerships selling Sonatas for $2000 below invoice before even applying any rebates to have one do this is crazy. I can't believe they'll sell any unless they are going to run "$8k off sales!!!"

On the other hand, if this becomes a trend(I don't think it will) it could be a signal that Hyundai has really arrived so to speak. Usually that tactic is only used when certain cars are in extremely high demand due to popularity and/or short supply. Neither applies to the Sonata right now IMO.

OoooR...... Fayetteville, NC has a huge military population. Could it be that because Hyundai is offering a $1000 military rebate these dealers are looking to take advantage of their somewhat captive audience? If true, to me it would be the epitome of slimy ethics.

It would be very interesting if this is happening in any other areas around large military reservations. If so, it should be brought to the attention of local media. I bet that would put a stop to that kind of crap.

This does seem lke a great price. Most of the dealers i talked to would not go below 15900 for GLS Auto 09.
  • m6userm6user Member Posts: 3,181
I see a couple of Chicago dealers advertising $14499(including destination chg) for GLS manual. So I'm thinking you could probably get the auto for somewhere around $15400-$15700 +TTL.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Logic, and math, would seem to say so. But sometimes dealers mark down cars with unpopular trim (e.g. stick shifts on a mid-sized family car) more than more popular trim levels, or mark down bare-bones cars as "loss leaders", hoping to draw people into the dealership to buy the more popular (and expensive) cars. But it's worth a try to get the automatic for about $1000 more than the stick; the MSRP difference is $1200.
  • mitsinmitsin Member Posts: 19
I offered upto 15500 for a car in stock but most of the dealers would not come to that price in my area. I am about to toss it up and go buy the ford today.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Today (and maybe tomorrow) is a good time... seems like lots of great deals out there. I bought a used minivan today for my wife and looked at another dealership (VW) to see what was available in used Jettas. I saw a Ford dealer ad for $12,000 off any Freestyle (incl. $2k loyalty). Now, if I were only in the market for a new Freestyle... :)

Interestingly, my local Hyundai dealers seem to be holing the line on their advertised Sonata prices, even on Labor Day. One dealer's advertised price on the GLS AT was $17.5k, another said $16k but that included the $1,000 military discount. Not really very good prices compared to other parts of the country.
  • chief15chief15 Member Posts: 15
They all do it here in Hawaii, although the "adjustment" fee is around $3.000.

When I go to a dealer the first thing that I tell them is if you want to talk deal, forget about the "adjustment" fee. Most of them do.

we have a large number of young men (and women) who return from deployment with "bonus" money (well earned) from Uncle Sam. However, they mostly appear to buy large trucks and SUVs (and Harleys:)

but we've always had dealers who take advantage of our young troops and their financial inexperience........I just thought that what the dealer did was kinda slimey
  • I have decided to purchase a Sonata, most like the I4 as opposed to the V6 to save a little money and get a little bit better gas mileage. My dilemna is in the dealership that I've been thinking of buying from. Currently they are offering the Limited I4 Automatic with the DVD Navitgational system for under $21,000. That includes the current $2,000 rebate. That still puts their starting sale price about $2,000 under invoice. I would still need to pay the freight ($695), tags, and sales tax (3% in VA).

Am I missing something here or is that price too good to be true? I'm not trying to look the gift horse in the mouth; I'm just trying to be cautious with whom I do business with.

    Thanks,
    Merg

Some dealers in New Jersey area are routinely selling Sonatas for $2000 under invoice before the rebate is taken off and that price includes the $695 freight. Your deal would be about $695 less of a deal so I certainly think it is NOT to good to be true. In most areas of the country that is a very good price you've got there. I4 Limiteds are pretty popular so I think the price you got is very good. I would go for it.
  • Cool. Thanks for the response. Any one with anecdotal evidence here in VA would be appreciated too.

I currently have a 2006 V6 Sonata and thinking about going for a 2009 4cyl. Can someone who has experience/driven both tell me how the power of the 4cyl compares to to the V6. Obviously there is going to be less power but it is really weak in comparison?

I use to have a 4cyl 2001 Santa Fe that plowed on take off but I know that is a much heavier vehicle and 4wd.

    thanks

We recently bought an 09 Sonata Ltd I4 Auto with only carpeted mats as an option from Fairfax Hyundai in Fairfax, VA. After discounts and rebates, we got it for $18821 + their $389 processing fee (profit) + TTL. So we paid $19210 + TTL at the end of July. That was far better than any dealer here in south-central PA was willing to offer. That area of VA seems to be very competitive so check around, you could possibly do better. Good luck. ;)

I see a 2009 Sonata with an msrp of $24505. The dealer has a $6119 dealer rebate and a $3400 Factory rebate. (The Rebate I see from Hyundai is $2000). How can a dealer take almost $10,000 dollars off of MSRP on a 2009 car that is $24505?. I would guess that the invoice would be $2000 less and the dealer holdback may be $500 to $1000. Is this a bate and switch that this car has already been sold. This is not a pick-up truck that gets 15 miles per gallon down hill.

You asked two questions. The answers are:

    1. They can't.
    2. Probably yes. It is probably a form of bait and switch and/or deceptive advertising.

The ad may have fine print that says something like "all rebates applied" or something to that effect. What that means is that they applied any and all rebates that apply to the car whether or not everybody can get them or not. There is a $2000 consumer rebate, there is also a $1000 military rebate, a $400 college grad rebate. Gee that adds up to $3400 doesn't it.

Now the $6119 dealer discount is puzzling. Several dealers are selling this car for $2000 less than invoice which is maybe $3500 less than MSRP before applying the $2000 rebate. So that leaves about $2600 unexplained. My bet is that if you look at the ad closely it may not say "New 2009 Sonata" but just "2009 Sonata". If that's the case it is probably a demo at best or even a used car.

If it does say NEW, it is probably, like you say, just a simple bait and switch. It's not the real deal.
  • bhmr59bhmr59 Member Posts: 1,602
You're right the adv specifically mentions the college grad discount of $400 being included in the rebates, but does not mention the military rebate (which I'd bet is also included).

In addition, to get to the "original list price" of $24,504 for a GLS, is BS. I just checked Edmunds New Car pricing. Selected GLS 4 cyl, AT with every available option. MSRP, including destination is $22,560.

The adv didn't even mention AT, much less popular equipment pkg and other options.

This advertised car price has to be packed with dealer add-on crappola and probably a hefty "market adjustment."

If not fraudulent, it is certainly misleading advertising. I'd avoid this dealership.
  • m6userm6user Member Posts: 3,181
He just said that it was a 2009 Sonata advertised. I assumed because of stated MSRP they were referring to a Limited. Regardless, it a bunch of BS.

Anyone know what the new rebates/incentives are for Sept? Doesn't look like the website has released them yet
  • bhmr59bhmr59 Member Posts: 1,602
    It's worse than you thought.

The ad says it's a 4 cyl GLS with A/C, but doesn't mention auto tranny.

We have a V6. We did test-drive the V4 on highway as well as city street and personally, I think that it does lack a serious amount of power: we are a family of three and with the salesman also sitting with us for the test-drive, the V4 felt quite sluggish. Your needs are probably different but for us, this is/was going to be our family car so we decided to go for V6. The mileage different is not that much really.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
They are there now. Looks like Sonata incentives are the same as for August, at least in my state (MN). Some are down (e.g. Elantra), some are up.
  • m6userm6user Member Posts: 3,181
That dealer is only one small step-up the food chain from a carny huckster.
  • idiomidiom Member Posts: 16
Today when I came for my next oil change, saw my salesmen. Just asked if any good offer he had, because someone hit my car in front left fender/bumper/wheel.
After 1 hour signed paperwork for 09 GLS l4/silver/black-grey interior.
Difference was 3K OTD, which was fully covered by insurance check, so I did not paid a cent. I just told them to match this check.
Only thing is car has 4K miles. It was loaner car. Well, 08 had 9300 miles.
I don't know how good this deal is, but I'm glad. I will miss my 08 exterior, but 09 interior is NICE!!! Also it has more power, accelerates much more better than 08.

Yesterday, I bought a Hyundai 2009 Sonata SE. This was what the dealer sold me as too. I was shopping for an insurance with Geico.com and when I put in the VIN # the software from Geico came back saying it was a 2009 Sonata GLS/LX. I checked the VIN on CarFax and it came back saying the car was 2009 Sonata SE/Limited. So my question to you learned folks is : did the dealer sell me a GLS adding all the additional features on it saying it was a SE? Let me add that the car has all the features of a SE. I am calling the dealership to check this out tommorrow. Is there any way to confirm that it is a SE and not a GLS/LX?? Any replies before that will greatly reassure me. Thanking in advance.
  • wobbly_earswobbly_ears Member Posts: 160
Your sales receipt would mention what trim level you bought. If it says SE, then you have SE.

As to why Geico would show it as a GLS; maybe it is just some data coding error.

As I mentioned before, check your receipt. I would trust the receipt more than the Geico website. You can also call Hyundai corporate to check.
  • pachhikpachhik Member Posts: 4
The sales receipt does not mention the trim level. It just mentions the body type as : 4DR SDN I4 AUTO. Nothing else. Nowhere is the trim mentioned.
  • mrcellusmrcellus Member Posts: 52
pachhik-I can help you out real quickly so you are prepared for the dealer. One identifyable part that separate the gls, se, and limited are the rims themselves. The GLS has 16 inch steel wheels/ hubcaps, the SE has 5-spoke alloy 17's, and the limited has a 10-spoke alloy 17. That simple-hope it helps unless someone switched at the dealer.
  • tenpin288tenpin288 Member Posts: 804
We have an 09 Sonata Ltd and our insurance company, Liberty Mutual, lists it as a SE/Ltd that gets truncated to SE on most paperwork. ;)
  • munro585munro585 Member Posts: 9
Would you believe it? 2 days after I buy the car, the check engine light comes on!!!! I was shocked and have to take it to my local dealer now. Hope it is not a huge problem. :(
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
The window sticker, which by law must be on the car when you take delivery, would clearly state the trim level of the car. What does it say?
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
A common cause of the check engine light coming on is the gas cap not being secured tightly enough. Did you or anyone else put gas in recently?
  • pachhikpachhik Member Posts: 4
It says as 2009 Sonata LE. I called up the dealership and the manager insists that I did have an SE. He also told that sometimes the VIN #s does not get updated on the database that the Insurance company uses. He says it will reflect soon in the database and I should be rest assured and enjoy my SE. :) Today, I called up AllState Insurance and when they did the quote - their system came up with SE/Limited Sedan when the put in my VIN. Please let me know your views.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
There is no such thing as a 2009 Sonata LE. So please check your window sticker again.

Another tip: the SE has part leather, parth cloth seats. It also has a spoiler on the edge of the trunk lid.
  • pachhikpachhik Member Posts: 4
Aww. My bad. I meant to say 2009 Sonata SE. That's what is printed on the window sticker. And Yes, it does have the spoiler and part leather/cloth inserts too.
  • jlindhjlindh Member Posts: 282
"If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it must be a duck." I'd say you have a duck, oops.....SE.
  • mazerunnermazerunner Member Posts: 13
I just purchased a 2009 Hyundai Sonata GLE 5-speed manual for $13,700 OTD.

Tax, tags, and title were $700.

I don't think it's possible to buy this car for less money than that. I think my car was being used as part of a sales promotion.
  • jlindhjlindh Member Posts: 282
Understand your dealer got $13,000 and the state got $700, is that correct? That's a great deal!
  • ahkhan99ahkhan99 Member Posts: 15
That is a great deal! Where did you get this at? What state?
  • mazerunnermazerunner Member Posts: 13
Yes, the price after all rebates were applied was $13,000.
Taxes, tags, and title added another $700 to the price.

I think this car was being advertised at such a low price to draw people into the dealership. I live in SC, where car taxes are capped at $300. I like the car very much, but am thinking about reselling it. The car has less than 30 miles on it.

    :)
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
If I were you I'd keep it. You'd have to sell it for nearly $14k to make it worth your while (after ad costs etc.). A new one can be had on the East Coast for under $15k + TT&L. Sticks are not that popular in this class of car, so there may not be many potential buyers. Also, the 10/100 warranty does not transfer to the 2nd buyer, so they would only get the 5/60 warranty. That might be a big drawback for many buyers.

So why not keep it and enjoy it? You can't drive a new car that's anything close to it for less. :)
