Good strategy. I actually prefer the Optima to the Sonata, but it's very hard to find an Optima I4 with ABS/ESC in my part of the country. They are standard on the Sonata.

Just received an OTD price of $21.350. Does anyone know if this is a good deal for the Houston Texas area?
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
If that's a Limited, it seems like a very good price, since you do pay some hefty sales tax down there, right?
  • kmartin123kmartin123 Member Posts: 2
    Yes, 6.25%

Assuming that you are talking about 2009 Sonata Limited V4, I think 21, 350$ is an excellent OTD price. As you might have read, I paid 22k (650$ more) OTD for Limited with Nav. I think you can assume that 650$ is a fair price for Nav.

On a side note, I would highly recommend that you haggle for good OTD price for Limited with Nav. These days everyone needs a GPS and a decent one from Garmin with Text to Speech (TTS) (Trust me, you do want TTS) will cost you 300$. I don't know if you have seen the Hyundai Dashboard GPS but it is EXCELLENT. It is better than what my friend has in her Acura RDX. It's full color, touch screen, and it also lets you control Sound System + Radio + MP3. I LOVE it!

In my humble opinion, if you can get a dashboard NAV for 500$ more (I don't recommend that you pay 1000+ for dashboard unit), it is worth every penny. Please do checkout dashboard unit before you buy your car.

    Good Luck!

I don't have the exact figures in front of me right now, but we just recently purchased an 09 Sonata Ltd 4cyl, Willow Gray/Gray, with floor mats at Fairfax Hyundai in Fairfax, VA (we live in PA so we drove nearly 3.5 hours to get this car, it was worth it. The dealers around here wouldn't go below invoice). After discount, rebates (we got the $500 loyalty rebate), etc, we left paying $18821 + $389 processing (profit) fee + TTL. We even did better on the trade than I expected. The exact TTL is actually to be determined as we have a temp VA registration and are waiting for the C.O.A and a roughly $940 VA sales tax refund so we can get the Sonata registered in PA. Once we get that done, I'll post the revised numbers to give you an accurate OTD, but it should come out around $19800 - $20200 total. My wife loves this Sonata. It replaced an 04 Sonata LX that she swore she didn't want to replace until she saw the new one at the auto show in Pittsburgh this spring. On the way home from VA to south-central PA, that new Sonata 4cyl auto returned 31.2 MPG over nearly a 200 mile trip! By the way, Edmunds shows MSRP for this car as $24935 and invoice as $23357 so I think we did OK. :D

Chicao sales tax = 10.25%...highest in nation. Glad I live in the burbs.

Not true on the reliability part. Kia is way behind in the latest dependability survey for 2008 that just came out. Hyundai meanwhile is above average. I'd definitely buy a hyundai over kia until we have more proof that recent kia's have better long term reliability. Kia is getting better at initial quality, but that isn't enough.

I just went to the famous Fairfax Hyundai dealership for a price quote. I want a 2009 Sonata GLS Automatic, color no preference, no other package. They quote me $15,300+tax(3.2%)+title fee ($62) and processing fee ($389) = $16240.6 OTD. This price already includes the national rebate of $2000 and the graduate rebate of $400. I'm a Costco member but was told that Costco price is only $1000 below invoice (which is worse than the Internet price), no additional rebate for being a Costco member (is this true? I thought someone got a several hundred dollar rebate for being a Costco member). Is this a good deal? Shall I negotiate for a lower price? If so, by how much? Many thanks!
  • bhmr59bhmr59 Member Posts: 1,602
One of the peopel I know in CT who bought a Tuscon at Towne Hyundai about a year ago asked the salesman about Costco pricing. The salesman told him he could offer him the Costco price instead of the internet price and it would only cost him about $1,000 more. lol

Sometimes these buying clubs aren't all they claim to be.

It' not 10.25% on vehicles. It lists Chicago as 7.25%, but I think there's a 1.25% Chicago home rule tax for vehicles registered there. Most burbs are at 7.25% also for vehicles. I guess you can save a little if you buy from a burb @ 7%, then you're total is only 8.25%.
  • xiaoman1xiaoman1 Member Posts: 8
At least two dealers told me so.

It appears that is the case:

The $400 HMFC College Graduate rebate can only be applied to HMFC bookings (sales) and may not be combined with other HMFC special offers or programs. Click on Special Programs above for current HMA rebates.

However, the web site also says the program is effective only through June 2!

I was offered $15500 OTD this time. Good?
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Pretty hard to beat that. Maybe ask them to throw in the carpeted floor mats (you'll want them!), and drive it home.
  • m6userm6user Member Posts: 3,181
    It lists Chicago as 7.25%,

What is it in the above sentence? Is it up to date because they just raised the tax rate a couple of months ago. However, you may be right on vehicles. They may have some sort of exemption on motor vehicle sales. I just the know the overall sales tax rate in the city of Chicago is 10.25% and the suburbs within Cook County are about 9% or so. My wife works in a retail store almost on the boundary of Cook County and a collar county and she has to deal with the fact that the sales tax where she works is quite a bit higher than down the street so to speak.

What would be a good price for I4 with Navi in Atlanta area? One quote I got is about 23400 OTD. I am not sure what is a good price in Atlanta?

    Dear xiaoman1

This price is really excellent. I want to know if this is a standalone deal or are u trading your old vehicle for the 2009 GLS automatic?. In my area, the price given to me for an GLS automatic with the convenience package is $17992 OTD. Am I paying too much? By the way I am in the mild mild midwest!
  • jfritschjfritsch Member Posts: 958
Folks -- again OTD is not descriptive

Sales taxes vary from $50 to $1500 on this car depending on state and county. Title and tags can be $50 to $300. Some people consider OTD with tax, some not etc..

In your case, 16000 for a GLS with the convenience pkg is either a good deal (300 tax and tags) or fantastical deal (1600 tax and tags).

    Good luck

I think your wrong. OTD should be THE PRICE that you lay down and leave with the car. I do see your point that sales and Lic fees may vary from location to location. To this end it should be stated that this includes a x.xx% tax and transfer fees (or registration fees) of X dollars. How the dealer breaks down the OTD price on his Bill of Sale is not my concern. I don't care if dealer prep is listed as $10,000 as long as the OTD price is what was stated and I don't pay a penny more.

BTH I just purchased a 2009 Sonata Limited with NAV (and capeted floor and cargo mats thrown in) for an OTD price of $23,256. This was in IL and includes sales tax of 7.25% and $80 xfer fees.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
I think the point was that while OTD price is what's important to the buyer, it really helps others looking in on this discussion to itemize the costs of the car, since rebates, taxes and fees are variable. Here is one way to do it:

    Sonata GLS I4 Automatic
Options: (describe any options here): None
    MSRP (including destination): $19,995
    Rebates: $2000 + $500 loyalty
Price before tax, license, fees: $15,500
Sales tax (6%--note that in this example, tax is computed AFTER rebates; in many states tax is computed BEFORE rebates): $930
    Documentation fee: $50
    Title and license fees: $275
    OTD price: $16,755

From this information everyone can see what kind of discount ($1995) you got from the dealer on the car, and which rebates were included in the deal.

I've asked for quotes from 20 dealers in the general area. I'm looking for a manual as that's all I've ever really driven & have only located one in the area. So far that place is way too high, a couple said they could do a trade, most don't seem to want to bother & just suggest the auto's in stock.

Best manual quote so far, not in stock.
$15225 selling price after $2000 rebate
    $Tax at 7% ===$1218
    $Doc Fee $150.00
    $New plates $168.00
    total - $16761.00

Best auto quote, floor mats included
    $16,122.00 (includes $2000 factory rebate)
    Docs $150
    *Tax, Title, License not included.

Sorry that my post caused so much confusion. I do not know the breakdowns. I only know that it does not come with any additional option packages, and the tax rate is 3.2%. I qualify for the $400 graduate rebate if financing with Hyundai. I do not qualify for the loyalty rebate. With all this information, do you guys still think it's a good deal?
  • xiaoman1xiaoman1 Member Posts: 8
Just got a little more information. In order to get graduate rebate, I have to go with Hyundai financing, which probably charges arund 7% APR. I'll pay off a month after I buy the car and pay the one month's APR and early payoff penalyty, which aggregate to a little less than $100.
  • jfritschjfritsch Member Posts: 958
Please pay attention. There is nothing right or wrong. Some people consider otd differenty, (some sans taxes some with) and regardless, if the guy asks (wants a comparison) if xxx otd is a good deal from members of this forum, without knowing what he considers otd or what state he is in ($50 to $1500 in taxes and title) it is sometimes hard to tell him. (or anyone). Obviously if a trade is involved even more info is needed.

Also someone else adds that they got a 400 additional rebate from Hyundai for financing from them. They mention no rate or term. If your rate is comparable to what you can get with your credit at several other institutions (say 5%) then ok. If they are charging 7% then you are probably paying possibly 300 or so more, not less.

    Good luck

Just to clarify. When I said OTD in my original post, I meant including tax. Again, the tax rate is 3.2%. With $400 graduate rebate, the OTD price is $15500 for a 2009 Automatic Sonata GLS model with no additional packages. Tag fees should be around $62. Looks like the consensus is that this is a good deal. I know that no other dealer is willing to match the deal.
  • bobgwtwbobgwtw Member Posts: 187
The ONLY WAY readers can make a fair comparison of prices is by comparing the price you paid exclusive of tax & various dealer charges; because these fees vary so much from state to state (tax) & dealer fees even within a state. If you're in NY & I'm in SC, OTD prices become meaningless.
  • bobgwtwbobgwtw Member Posts: 187
Rigtht on! This way we're comparing apples to apples.
  • bhmr59bhmr59 Member Posts: 1,602
I disagree. Dealer fees are part of the price of what the dealer is charging for the car. Taxes, registration, etc go to the state, not the dealer. So that varies depending upon where the car is purchased or registered.

However, the dealer pockets all dealer fees. (One dealer may offer a car at a $200 lower "price" but if his dealers fees are $300 higher, then he is actually charging a higher price.)
  • aalsherriaalsherri Member Posts: 68
Others got it for less than $22,000

I am thinking of trading in my 2006 Sonata LX (deepwater blue) with sunroof/loaded. Has 42k miles right now and in great shape - owe about $12,800 right now... so I wonder if I would have to pay any extra if I traded in for a 2009 Sonata LX 4cyl w/ Nav?

Also, what does everyone think of the power of the 4cyl compared to the V6?
  • munro585munro585 Member Posts: 9
    Dear Xiaomin1

Can you tell me which dealer this is and in which state you are? I am willing to buy the vehicle and shipped it to me (even paying 700 shipping fees) if I can get a car for that price. Also, one dealer I went to said that I can EITHER have the $2000 cash back OR the $400 graduate discount with HMFC. Can you clarify if I could avail both (meaning 2000+400 ~~ for a total of $2400 rebate?)

    Thanks

also, i checked after the name and found the fiarfax hyundai website. their rates are excellent. but edmunds has 2 reviews for them and they are bad. how was ur experience with them?

    hey kenlight1,
    the OTD price of 23256 : Was this for a V4 or a V6 ? Does this include a Bluetooth also ?
We recently bougha 2009 V6 Limited w/ Nav and Bluetooth w/ cargo-net and carpet mats for $24100 (+tax and fees) .. If you got a V4, then i got robbed
  • dcibrandodcibrando Member Posts: 90
Is Bluetooth not built into to the NAV unit? Is this something you have to ask them to add before you purchase?

Hi all--I have been reading these boards and am wondering if I am getting a good deal or not--planning to buy this weekend!

2009 Sonata GLS (just standard stuff)

Out the door including $1200 tax and $599 dealer fees (pretty standard in Tampa--some are more) price is $18, 250 plus throwing in 1 yr free oil changes and a couple tanks of gas.

    MSRP was $20,500
  • spiffy_dudespiffy_dude Member Posts: 12
Bluetooth is not part of the NAV unit. This is separate. Inv cost is $292.
Works pretty well with my wife's motorola KRZR and my blackberry curve.
  • jfritschjfritsch Member Posts: 958
If you've been reading the forum then you know 17000 for a 20500 09 sonata gls auto (factory sticker, not dealer sticker) is a fairly mediocre deal. Seems like a small amount of gas but if it is a card that is immediately usable, great. Something like filing your income tax to collect every tank forget it (look at the terms). Try to get in the 15000s-low 16000's sans gas stuff. Also hit all the dealers (6-10) toward the last week of the month to find the weak link.

    Good luck

I purchased this vehicle earlier this month and negotiated everything and put a few bones down at the end of July.

09 Sonata Auto with Popular Equipment Package
    $18642.00 - Purchase Price *taxable
    $180.00 - Doc / Service *taxable
    $15.00 - Title
    $8.00 - Transfer fee
    $1029.32 - mich 6% sales tax
    -----------------------------
    $19974.32 - Delivered Price
    $2000.00 - Rebate
    -----------------------------
    $17974.32 - total OTD
    -----------------------------

not included in this price I had another $1000 vehicle trade in, i did negotiate the price of the Sonata ($17974) with out the trade-in

in my old car the trans was starting to go, and i would assume the gaskets were a ticking time bomb as well and didn't have the heart to do a private sale knowing all the issues. Maybe the dealership can make a few bones from it, but its one less headache for me to deal with.

Thanks again all who helped out
  • aalsherriaalsherri Member Posts: 68
My advice to new buyers of the GLS with the poplar package. Assume a tax rate of 5% the best deal is $16.5K OTD without Hyundai loyalty. If you own a Hyundai car do not pay more than $16K. If you paid near $18K you overpaid $1500 more than what you should pay.
Please note that the the GLS I4 is in short supply in certain areas so you should wait till the dealers overstock their yards with them later this year before rushing into a bad deal.
Hyundai Sonata improved alot during the last three years but it is still a Hyundai and loses over $4000 of its value within one year. Also, the longevity and durability of the model is not proved yet.

I live in Northern New Jersey. Started shopping for this car today and requested a few price quotes from the following dealers. Stateline quoted me $15,996. Brad Benson quoted me $17,556.00. The previous two quotes include the rebate but NOT taxes/fees. From what I've read on this forum I feel I can get a better price. I'm not eligible for the loyalty discount.
  • jack47jack47 Member Posts: 312
Last week Towne ( central NJ) was advertrising on their site a GLS I4 for $3700 off the $19373 invoice for a net of $15673.

    Their $1700 plus the $2000 rebate = $3700.
  • xiaomanxiaoman Member Posts: 8
I had a terrible experience with Fairfax Hyundai. Their salesmen are very arrogant. They didn't even greet me for ten minutes after I walked in. The price they quoted me was higher too. They had to add on many charges (including those claimed to be covered by their internet quote) to their advertised internet price. The lowest price they could quote was $16321 OTD (without cargo met or floor mats), which is over $800 more expensive than my final deal. But anyway, what annoyed me the most was their arrogant salesman, especially a man named CJ Guo.

This is Alexandria Hyundai in Alexandria, VA. I'll open a new post to recommend this dealer to everyone. You can have both rebates.
  • xiaomanxiaoman Member Posts: 8
Alexandria Hyundai in Alexandria VA http://www.alexandriahyundai.com/. I recently bought a Sonata from this dealership and had a very pleasant purchasing experience. They offered me the lowest price I could find (lower than the famous Fairfax Hyundai and Towne Hyundai). The salesmen are very patient. However, the best part is that the Korean owner of the dealership (I just noticed that I couldn't post people's names but you'll find out this person easily from their website) is very nice and honest. I test drove several cars before finally buying mine and he never complained. Most importantly, he delivers his promises, no games played. I highly recommend this dealer. You'll likely find it worthwhile buying a car there and have it delivered to your place.

Can't tell where you are located, but if in the New England area, check out Rowe Hyundai in Westbrook, Maine (Portland area).

They have had advertised in the Sunday paper for over a month now a GLS 5-speed manual with I-4 for $14,995 including $2,000 rebate to dealer (can get an extra $500 off, but I don't recall if that is Hyundai loyalty rebate or Armed Services rebate). That price includes everything but sales tax & title fee. Has no option packages of any kind; not even floor mats or mud flaps.

I used their advertised price to get Quirk Hyundai in Bangor, Maine (closer to my home than Portland) to match the price. With sales tax, title, dealer doc fees, my cost was just under $15,900 OTD.

I am living in Yorktown Heights, NY (Upstate), and want to buy a Sonata '09 nearby. Does anyone have a recommendation of which dealership? Also I got a quote for SE 4 cyl with premium package of $22k. Is this a good offer in the neighborhood? If there is a good dealer, I would considering going CT or NJ for the purchase.

One last question, one of the previous posts mentioned that if a buyer can delay a bit there will be some sort of new Sonata available? Can somebody be more specific about what it is and how long I need to wait?

    Many thanks.
  • zcdyzcdy Member Posts: 11
tkachuk07, Yorktown Heights NY is far away from Maine. So it may not be feasible to drive up there to buy. Thanks for information any way.
