All 2009 Sonata GLSes have 5 speeds. Is this an AT or stick? What is the price before tax, license, and dealer-added fees?

You should test drive a Camry if only to make sure you don't think later, "Maybe I should have driven a Camry...". But a Camry will cost considerably more, especially when you add on the optional stability control.
  • mazerunnermazerunner Member Posts: 13
It's a 5-speed manual. And it includes all taxes, title, fees, etc.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Without knowing how much the taxes, title, fees etc. are there is no way to say whether it's a good deal or not. Taxes range from zero to 10% or more, for example. License fees can be a few dollars or several hundred dollars. You also didn't say which rebates you qualify for. That is why I asked for the price of the car before taxes and fees. It would also help to say which rebates you got--there's at least four separate rebates available on the Sonata now. So do you see how it could be a really good deal, or just an OK deal?
  • mazerunnermazerunner Member Posts: 13
Okay, here are the complete details:

    2009 Hyundai Sonata GLS
    5-speed manual transmission
    Taxes: $300
    Destination charge: $695
Title: $720 (can't remember for sure)
    Rebate 1: $2000 national rebate
Rebate 2: $500 Hyundai loyalty cash

    Out the door price: $16,000

I'm expecting a 2009 Camry LE to cost about $3000 more. I would get a Camry CE 5-speed manual, but it doesn't include keyless entry for some reason.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Invoice on the car including destination is $18,239. Less $2500 in rebates is $15,739. So including the taxes and fees (a very exhorbitant title fee too!) you are paying about $760 under invoice. Which is a good deal, if not the lowest possible.

The Camry CE stick will also probably not include ESC, an important safety feature, or XM radio.

2 months ago I purchased an SE 5 sp. with all options but the cargo net and spoiler for $ 15,200. Sales tax not included in price (bought in PA live in WV). 5% in my state. No loyalty discount. I think you could do a little better.
  • bhmr59bhmr59 Member Posts: 1,602
That "title fee" seems way out of wack. Are you including title, registration, dealer (documentation) fees and any other dealer fees under the heading of "title?"

As I understand it, title fees within any given state are the same for any car being registered. It just seems unlikely that your state, whichever it is, would charge a $720 title fee on a used car worth $2,000 and charge the same on a brand new car.

That would be one helluva title fee, much more than a 10% sales tax on the $2K used car.

We purchased the car today. Slate Blue Metallic Ext with Grey Interior::
This was the one they had ordered for us with a $500 deposit so feels good to have a car built for you. Did have some drama during the final pricing, but we got it for 24100
(might have got for $100 less but it was already a couple of hours and my 2 year old was getting hungry , sleepy cranky).
This is a V6 Limited, w/ Navigation and Bluetooth, cargo net and floor mats:
    Price (after 2K rebate): $24100
We are getting the rear parking sensor installed for $699 (wife wants it).
Thanks to "nphpd" and others for your tips else we might have bought the car for Inv + $300 !

    Hi,

california price for 09 Sonata GLS - no options (mats included)

    "MSRP" : $20,085
Discounts: $1,836 ( "dealer rebate"), and $2000 (factory rebate)

Apart from the standard extended warranty, clearcoat, scotchguard, underbody coating, here is scheme tht was tried. This was new to me.
They tried to rip me off with $405 for "prevent a theft" option. On further asking what it was, was told it was a mandatory safety feature. On further digging: the VIN was etched into the glass. On refusing to pay that, dealer generously chose to charge us only their cost: $299 ( What the heck $299 for etching the glass with a set of alpanumerical string !!). After threatening to walk out a couple of times the "prevent-a-theft" charge was removed from the offer.

Glad to see that others have been able to land better deals. This was the best I could do here. Add 10% (license and registration fees) on top of the above cost to get the out of the door price.

    Cheers !

Sorry, I don't know where I got $720 from. The title is really $15, which makes more sense.

I think this car doesn't seem to be selling well because I may have test driven the exact same one when I was just looking around about a month or so ago. It's the only manual transmission Sonata on the lot, so I'm not sure if that gives ME the bargaining power or the dealership because it's such a rare breed. I would much rather drive the manual transmission car, but want to make sure I can use that to my advantage regarding pricing.

Huntington didn't want to speak any further about the new car, nor the trade.

I did get offered $10,500 for the car on Friday from another Hyundai dealership with what appears to be a REALLY good deal on the new 2009. I should know in a day or so if this deal is going to happen.

I'm just waiting for the bait and switch at the last minute.
  • moocow1moocow1 Member Posts: 230
This would be an ok, but not great deal...without the extra crap in Cali.I got no crap from my dealer except a little push on the resistall package. Even the doc fee was extremely low, like $65. Etching does not cost $299. It probably costs like $25-50. I'd definitely have left this dealer, they sound terrible from everything you've said.

You got the best of Sonata series. Not the gas efficeinet but the powerful one. You would love the power of the car and everything. Now just enjoy the car and don't think about the price. You might find someone who bought the car for maybe $500 cheaper but so what? Just enjoy.
  • impala2002impala2002 Member Posts: 7
The invoice on the car was as follows:

    MSRP $26,150, destination charge $695, mats $90 - Total $26935.

I noticed that somebody else mentioned that they paid $24,100 with blue tooth and navigation. Extrapolating for the add-ons, seems like I should expect to deal around $22.5. Thoughts? nphpd - you seem to know this stuff. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.
  • nhphdnhphd Member Posts: 67
Tell me exactly what you want to buy with all the options and I will gladly help you. Also tell me which state you live and how much you pay for state TAX. Also tell me the color. White is $200 more. I give you a reasonable price that you should be able to get it. I won't give you a price that the dealers would run away from you.
  • haggardhaggard Member Posts: 93
Considering 2009 Sonata GLS I4, automatic, just floor mats. PA 6% sales tax. Dealer currently advertising 15,308 plus tax and fees. Thanks for your help!

Top 16K before tax. So with 6.25% tax you should pay not more than $17000. $15500 before tax would be a better deal. Don't give out your offer. Ask him to give the price first and then again ask him to give better price and tell him you have seen much better offers on line. Remember if you pay more than $16K before tax, you have been ripped off !!. 85% of the buyers get ripped off.!!!

And don't buy any extra insurance!!
  • alamocityalamocity Member Posts: 680
Sounds like the exact same model that I am interested in, let me know how you do.
  • impala2002impala2002 Member Posts: 7
I wanted to buy exactly the V6 Limited - no other options except for the mats.

As I had mentioned, this was from the sticker on the car:

    MSRP $26,150, destination charge $695, mats $90 - Total $26935.

This would be for northern CA, tax rate is 7.75%. Colors interested in: Natural Khaki or WIllow Gray.
  • twltwl Member Posts: 19
    MSRP: $ 21,070
    INVOICE: $ 20,147
$15,500 will be ~ $2,600 below invoice (assume $2,000 rebate). I would be happy if I can get at $16,000.

In fact, with less options, (no MG & CN) no dealers here offered me a price (before TTL) close to low $16,000. In fact, one dealer even refused to match the other's offer (close to $17,000). Any suggestion to proceeed? Thanks.
  • nhphdnhphd Member Posts: 67
Willow Gray is a luxury color. I believe 22.5K to 23K is a good price for that. Without NAV and before tax.
  • nhphdnhphd Member Posts: 67
Oops. I thought you want manual. With option group 2, I believe 16.8K is a good price. Floor mat and cargo net are free stuff that dealesr get on cars but charge the customers. I meant 16.8K before tax. Tell them you want it at 16.5K and just leave. Give them your contact info and tell them you are really interested. Tell them if they don't agree with that price range, you might go with some other brands.I meant 16.8K OTD before tax.

i got a quote of 17800 for a GLS no option out the door.
how does that seem, i did some searcing and did not see many post from people around chicago.
    thanks
  • nhphdnhphd Member Posts: 67
I believe there are only some 6CL GLS 2008 in the market. You can not find Limited 2008 anywhere. Go with 2009.
  • nhphdnhphd Member Posts: 67
Auto or manual? How much of that $17800 is tax?
  • mjjsmjjs Member Posts: 1
    Hi,
    I live in Milwaukee WI.
The 2009 Sonata I4 Limited :MSRP 24,734, Invoice 23,171 both prices include freight. After talking to two dealers the best offer so far is 20689+TTL and the tax rate here is 5.5%. In fact that 20689 pricing is supplier pricing that I qualify for and the dealer claims that he can't beat that. I have two othere dealers in the area I have not visited yet so I wonder what is a good price I should press for? If anyone has experience buying a Hyundai in the Milwaukee area I would appreciate to know what type of deal you got. Thanks.

    $15.00 County Tax

    $1,692.00
    Sales Tax @9.25%
$17,847.00 Total out the door price

    is this good?
  • nhphdnhphd Member Posts: 67
    automatic? => Yes
    Manual ? => I guess No.
  • polobluntspoloblunts Member Posts: 3
    it is auto.
  • tkachuk07tkachuk07 Member Posts: 18
My addition says $18,147 OTD for the breakdown you have posted. The sales price is decent & is in line with Fitzmall for an automatic.

Sales tax is killer, but that's Chicago.
  • moocow1moocow1 Member Posts: 230
Looks very good. I'd say go for it.
  • dschwagsdschwags Member Posts: 5
    nhphd,

Thank you for assisting within this forum, i have done my research and i think i have settled on a GLS Auto with Option 2 (no real need for a sunroof)

so if i do my math correct the following is what i should negotiate for the OTD including taxes price:

    $18,800 - i4 auto with opt 2
    $1,128 - Mich 6% tax
    $2,000 - Hyundai Cash Back
    $17,928 - OTD price (+title fee)

please let me know if i am on the right track
    thanks
    -dave
  • nhphdnhphd Member Posts: 67
I would say don't pay over $17500 OTD. See poloblunts is paying less than you while his tax in Chicago is over 9%.
  • m6userm6user Member Posts: 3,181
The person in Chicago was buying a GLS auto without any option packages. His math did not add up to $17800....it was like $18,100. Your price with option package 2 is actually pretty good.

Keep in mind that major metropolitan areas with 5 or more Hyundai dealers within a 25 mile radius are probably going to be a lot more competitive in pricing than a market with one or two dealers.
  • dschwagsdschwags Member Posts: 5
    m6user,

    Thanks,
I live in the Detroit / Ann Arbor area and i think there are 5 with in 25 miles of me and 6 or 7 total in the metro area, so it sounds like it should be relatively easy to have them bounce prices off each other and for me to get the vehicle option package and color i want.

As for the rest of the Hyundai community, any dealers any of you can recommend for service/maintenance please let me know.

    Cheers

    hi,

danbury hyundai dealer offered 24,997 out of the door for 2009 v6 limited with all the options except navigation.

do you think this is a good price.

if some one has got a better deal than this in connecticut, newjersey, or newyork
please post the details of the of the dealer and the price you got for.

if any one has bought a 2009 limited v4 with navigation and all the options. please let me know how much you got for and where among connecticut, newjersey, or newyork

    Thank you.
  • nhphdnhphd Member Posts: 67
If you ask me, you should be able to get a V6 without package 5 for 23500 OTD not including taxes. Your price is almost 25K. Do you have to pay 1500 for tax? If yes, then that 25K is a reasonable price.
  • bhmr59bhmr59 Member Posts: 1,602
Check Townehyundai web site. The car you want is $1900 under invoice before applying the $2000 rebate (and $500 loyalty rebate if you currently own a Hyundai).

I'm in northern Trumbull, CT, about 15 -20 miles from Danbury. Towne is 100 miles from my house. They're off Route 287, so if you take I-84 your milage should be similar. Check their web site and ask for Joe, the guy with the beard in the picture. He should give you a great deal.

Edit: Quick check on Edmuds shows invoice for Limited V6 with only floor mats as option shows: Invoice $23,357. Deduct dealer discount off invoice of $1900 = $21457. Deduct rebate of $2,000 = $19,457. Add doc fee of $189 = $19646. Then add our 6% CT sale tax to the pre-rebate price of $21,457 (CT policy, not the dealer) and title & registration.

You should be out the door for somewhere around $21,000 give or take a couple bucks.

I got an email from a internet sales guy from North Freeway Hyundai in Houston. I'm not in market for a Sonata (got me a sweet sweet Azera!). Some of you might be interested in it.

It is a 2009 I4 Automatic Transmission SOnata Limited (no Nav). The email says it is "Limited Sonata with an MSRP for $24,785 that you can purchase for just $18,988. Stock # H447171".

Have no further info (DOc fee or any added fees). But this seems to be a fantastic price for a Limited, isn't it?
  • ramtajogiramtajogi Member Posts: 21
    Raju,

Look at my earlier post about buying 2009 V4 Sonata Limited with Nav for 22k OTD in New Jersey. I have included a detailed break down of the cost. I purchased my car from Brad & Benson but I was shopping with Towne and Statesline and sales rep at both dealerships were nice.

And I agree with nhphd, you won't be able to find any 2008 Sonata models in NJ. I tried at least 4 dealers and none of them have it.
  • ramtajogiramtajogi Member Posts: 21
I recently bought Sonata Limited V4 with Nav for the OTD price of 22k.
I have posted the cost breakdown at http://townhall-talk.edmunds.com/direct/view/.ef040b2/5148

If I were to compare pre tax price, I paid 19,645$ for Sonata Ltd V4 with Nav. Your price of 20,689$ is 1000$ more for a car without Nav. I think you should haggle more.

    RJ
  • ramtajogiramtajogi Member Posts: 21
Also, Hyundai increased their rebate from 1500$ to 2000$ for the month of July. I don't know how Hyundai decides the rebate amount, but looking at how Sonata V4 are disappearing from the dealership lots, they might reduce the rebate in August.

Tomorrow is the last day of the month, so if you are ready to buy car, tomorrow is THE day to haggle and get the dream car you want! Good luck everyone!

to add another vehicle to the mix as i was originally going to try to purchase the GLS i4 auto with the preferred equip opt #2

the dealership claims they have a I-4 Auto SE in the color i would like. What would be a good starting negotiation price for this bad boy?

    Thanks

I dealt with these guys via email earlier this month, I gave up because they were very elusive, bordering on shady. Edmunds has some harsh reviews of them, also. Maybe it's a legit deal, just beware.
  • jmr15jmr15 Member Posts: 6
A dealer in Tampa is offering me on a GLS, popular package, added leather seats and blue tooth.

    MSRP 20 825
    Rebate 2 000

Final price $18 500 with all the extras is this good

Also are the gas voucher's a bunch of bolony ... please explain as I had one dealer offer $500
  • m6userm6user Member Posts: 3,181
Without knowing the cost of the leather seats it's hard to comment but I assume the bluetooth is the Hyundai aftermarket for about $350-400. If the outsourced seats cost say $1100, I would say it is about $1000 on the high side. However, if the $18500 is out the door which it doesn't appear to be, it would probably be a good deal.

In short, people on this forum need a lot more details to answer your question.
  • jmr15jmr15 Member Posts: 6
The leather is about $1000 and the blue tooth is $350.

Also I don't understand the term Out The Door....$18 500 is before adding all the other costs.

    Tag $250
    Tax 6 % plus 50
    Dealers fee $599
    CVR fee $30.50
    Ty/Bat fee $6.50

This is the first car I am buying alone and i'm a little confused :0) so please help me
  • jmr15jmr15 Member Posts: 6
Also the car is Auto and the Rebate is Factory.
