I suspect nothing. It's advertised all over the place on the internet to get around 1700-1800 under invoice. Now if you can show me some people getting over 2000 under invoice before rebates...then you have more suspicious dealings.

If you can get them down to $2,200 below invoice - you have done really well! Do they have any documentation/processing fees?

Since $2200 or even $2000 under invoice before rebates would be a truly exceptional deal on an I4 with nav, you should consider before you walk in there what your real limit is, before you start looking at other dealers or even other makes of cars. That is, I think it will be very unlikely they will go for your offers. But good luck, you never know!
  • $349 documentation/processing fee (it is unregulated in VA and that is typical here)
    $10 registration transfer fee
3% sales tax on price before rebates

    That's it.

As I stated, I'm looking for an OTD price, so I've already included those costs in my price.

    - Merg
  • I can hope right. I've got prices worked out to OTD of $22,000, which works out to $20,918 for the car. That would still be about $230 less than what they are offering. If I need to I'd go that high, but hopefully I won't have to.

The other car I'm interested in I should be able to get for the $21,500 OTD price as it is lower to begin with.

BTW, was my calculation of below invoice correct?

Any educated guesses as to up or down for October???
  • CarsDirect is showing that the $2000 rebate is now expiring on 10/31. A few days ago they had the expiration date as 09/30.

just joined and love readind the messages here! I am looking to get a 2009 limited 4cylinder with nav and know exactly what i want. I have been doing my homework and know I kinda got screwed when i was younger and bought my first car and want to get the best deal I can now. I see that on edmonds the invoice is at around $24,791. Should my first step to buying the car be trying to contact the fleet manager, do most people agree this is the best way and how did the conversation go down on the phone? Also has anyone ever emailed their dealership and stated what they wanted and were willing to spend, is this a good idea or stick with the phone?

I live in upstate NY, utica area, so if anyone has any dealership stories from around me that would be great thanks!
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
That is most likely an error on the CarsDirect web site. I doubt HMA wouild tell CarsDirect about its rebate program for October two weeks before it tells anyone else.
  • Very well could be, but they did change it in the last day or two.

I checked with towne hyundai, they gave me a quote of $15,887 (I am not a current hyundai owner, so not qualified for $500 loyalty rebate), it seemed to be a nice deal, they I asked for OTD, and it was $17551.02. There was no point of going there to save $100. I walked to 2 other dealers, and was thrown out of door for my offer of $17000, I guess am not the man to get a $16k deal.
  • alamocityalamocity Member Posts: 680
That's a good price but I looked at the fine print and it mentions dealer ad on's additional and appears to be for one stock number that isn't listed on their inventory. I know from my experience I've seen these ads before and what they listed usually involved a lease type deal with the price listed as the balance due at the end of the lease. Would be curious to hear from anyone who's dealt with this dealership.

we leased a sonata GLS last week and I am so pissed off today, the dealer did not mention anything about disposition fee which is $400, and they gave us $500 gas cart which actually we got it yesterday and it is such a pain for using it( just can have $25 each month after sending back $100 reciept and after 5 weeks)
deal is 1500 down, and monthly $210 for 24 month. does anybody knows about desposition fee on Hyundai or any advise?
  • nhphdnhphd Member Posts: 67
Your OTD price for a 4CL limited with NAV should be 21K (excluding TAX). Everything else is included. If you get lower than that, the deal is good. If you want to pay more , you can go up to 21.15K. Anything above that, you are whacked. This price is valid for 85% of states in USA.
  • thekingtheking Member Posts: 107
You are being played for as a fool. You can get a 2009 GLS for that price..........depending on mileage and cond......car is worth no mor ;) e than $13,000
  • stockmanjoestockmanjoe Member Posts: 353
How did you confirm "no bait and switch" via phone call? If a dealer was dishonest enough to bait and switch I am sure they would be dishonest enough to tell you they aren't doing it when you call up.
  • stockmanjoestockmanjoe Member Posts: 353
    NySniper:

Any price from $500 - $2,000 below invoice is really doing pretty well at least for the North Florida area. It may differ in NY but probably not too much.

It is best to work through the internet salesman I have found. Contact them via email and tell them what you want and that you want it $2K below invoice - before rebates. The good dealerships will say, fine come on in and pick it out or "the best I can do is $1K below or $1.5K". Some will say no way at all - so just dismiss them. This is a good way to screen who is really interested in your business.

Sorry you didn't take the time to review your paperwork. I am sure the disposition fee was on there. I do not know if it's a justified fee or just a way for the dealer to increase their gross profit.

I have never leased a car, but that being said if I ever did I would do my homework before hand.
    Enjoy your new car.
  • aalsherriaalsherri Member Posts: 68
The increase in the price is due to the dollar decline but the price of the car is nearly the same. The same go for gold. The price of gold didn't increase but the purchasing power of the dollar went down.

Capitol Hyundai in Columbia, SC is offering another steal like the one I got earlier this month.

    Sonata GLS: $11,996 + tax/tags/title

This price assumes you are eligible for all the rebates. If you're not active duty military, add $1000. If you don't already own a Hyundai, add another $500. That's still a very good deal.

There's only one car on the lot advertised at this price, however, and it's a manual transmission. If it's not the color you want or if you want a car with automatic transmission, the dealer will try and steer you over to another Sonata at a normal (higher) price. So I guess it's another loss leader, but it's a great deal nonetheless if you don't mind rowing your own gears.

Anyone pay less than $21,000 for a 09 Sonota Limited V6?
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Also add $400 for the college grad rebate if you don't qualify. So that puts it at nearly $14k for what I am assuming is a stick Sonata with no options, MSRP around $19k. Still a very good deal, but they are rare so I expect the small print also has an invoice number on it or says "one only". If it's for an automatic Sonata, then it is a really good deal even with the rebates added back in.

I am about to buy a Ltd and I am getting a great deal but starting to think I would be fine with an SE and some extra cash in the bank. But I am wondering if the deals are as deep on the SE as on the LTD and also whether there are SE's on the lots with 4 cyl (one dealer said not available).
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Since you pretty much asked the same question in the 2009 Sonata discussion, here's my response from there:

You are asking a question without giving any numbers. Tell us what you can get Limited (with or without NAV) and SE and I will tell you which one to go. The fact that you are thinking about saving some money shows that you are wise and I liked it.

I could really use some advice as my trade-in values obviously influences my OTD price and I am really trying to negotiate from an OTD comparison. I have noticed that the trade-in value on NADA of KBB is much higher than anything I have been offered at the dealer. And I am a pretty good negotiator but really seem to hit a ceiling on that which is 30% below what the internet tells me my car is worth. Should I hang tough or have others found that the online estimates really are higher than real-world numbers. Thanks all!
I should add that the 30% may sound high, but I am talking about an older car with a NADA value of 5k.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
If you don't think you are getting a fair trade-in value for your car, considering its mileage and condition, then it would be better to sell it yourself if it has any chance of selling i.e. it's not a truck or big SUV. You should always separate the new-car negotiations from the trade-in discussions--maybe you are already doing that. Get their best price on the new car, then introduce the trade and see what they'll give you for it. That's the only way to know what their real deal is on the new car, and on the trade.

Have you tried taking your car to non-Hyundai dealerships to see what they'll give you straight-up for the car? That is another way to confirm its real-world trade value.

P.S. I have been shopping a lot lately for used cars, and I can tell you that many very nice and desirable cars, e.g. I4 Sonatas and Mazda6's, are being offered for much less than KBB retail price. So maybe used car prices are depressed overall and the KBB prices haven't caught up yet. That could account for at least some of what you are seeing.
  • 59er59er Member Posts: 30
    Hey Backy,
Thanks so much for your reply. Yes, I know it is always better to sell it myself, but I am not getting a lot of interest on Craigslist. Plus the tax savings when rolling it into a car sale helps, so I think I am going to try to trade it in. My car is actually a VW and I have peddled it both in new car shopping (Subie and Hyundai) and private used car lots which specialize in Europeans. So maybe your observation about KBB retail applies to trade-in values as well. Oh well, I am coming close. Thanks!

I'm considering a purchase of a 2009 Sonata GLS but found that I can't get the fog lights installed as an option although it is offered for the 2009 SE and Limited. It used to be offered as part of the premium package. If Sonata doesn't offer is there an after market source which provides a kit and install into the electrical wiring harness?
  • newowner10newowner10 Member Posts: 227
I have had many cars with fog lights and I have never noticed any big difference. They always seem to illuminate about 10 feet from the front bumper only. My 09 GLS has excellent low beam illumination that have a very sharp cut-off . The high beam lights are unbelievable how bright they are. I would never pay extra for fog lights.

We got the same specs for under 17k OTD from Bob Dunn Hyundai of Greensboro, NC. We live in the triangle area - near Raleigh - and decided to drive to GB since no local dealer could match this price. Check with their Internet manager Lee for a quote.
  • stockmanjoestockmanjoe Member Posts: 353
So it would be $3.5K below invoice with $2K being rebates and $1.5K dealer discount - that is pretty good. I'd go for it.
  • girlethinggirlething Member Posts: 14
I emailed him tonight and We shall see what he comes back with.
Thank you for the heads up.

So anything below $ 17,000. for that car would be a deal? :surprise:

New guy here - from Southern California.

I want to buy a 2009 Sonata Limited I4, with no options.

MSRP for this vehicle is $25,245. Invoice is $23,645. (These include shipping).

Including the $2000 rebate only (I don;t qualify for the others), what price should I be aiming for (pre tax, license, docs)?

I am expecting quotes to start coming in tomorrow. The first one I got was for $21,145, which looks to me like $500 under invoice.

    Any advice? Thanks.
  • 59er59er Member Posts: 30
    Hi Starchief,

I am in the same boat here in NY and I can tell you what I did. I found the best OTD (taxes, fees, everything) internet pricing I could within 500 miles of here and then I e-mailed the internet sales rep at my local dealers to see if they would come close. I feel I got a great price that way. Our local dealers don't usual discount to the degree some of the big internet businesses do but I got them to come down to that price.
  • samvijsamvij Member Posts: 15
With the (reported) MSRP increase of about $400 - I believe OTD in NC below 17k should be a good deal.

What we liked about the whole experience was - no pressure, no bait and switch tactics, and very good price for the vehicle we wanted.
Only thing they offered was - financing through them (rate I offered was 6.99% - which is not bad), and extended warranty for 10 years coverage (for less than $999). Having talked to several dealers, I can claim that this is the best price I saw for comprehensive extended coverage. Whether you need it or not, depends on how long you really plan to keep the car. The last car we had - we put 73k miles on it in less than 4 yrs, so it turned out to be a good thing to have the extended warranty for 10yr/ 100k miles.

When we bought our Sonata they had a good selection of colors in stock on their lot - and they offered to procure any other if we wanted, and was available for "dealer-trade" within the region.
    Good luck with your search!

Here in Sunnyvale, CA (Bay Area) we got the base GLS model (Automatic) for 17900 OTD (price $16165 +Tax/Tags + $55 doc fee).

Base model with no extras was 15995. This was no internet sale, we actually walked into the dealership and picked the car. We qualified only for 2000 rebate.
  • Just got home from buying a 2009 Sonata Limited with Navigation. It is the Bright Silver with Gray interior.

My pricing is based off of the older prices the Sonata was selling at since this vehicle has been on the dealer lot since August.

    MSRP: $25,665
    Invoice: $23,940

Options: Navigation System, Carpeted Floor Mats, Cargo Mat, Mud Guards

    Internet Price: $20,450

    Price: $20,400 (includes $2,000 rebate)
    Destination: $695
Processing Fee: $0 ($349 fee waived for Costco Members)
    Tax: $692.85 (3%)
    Online DMV Registation Fee: $10
    Tag Transfer: $12
    Dealer's Tax: $33.65 (0.15%)

    Total: $21,843.50
    Below Invoice: $1,540

I think I got a pretty good deal. I also got $4,400 for a 03 Durango SLT Plus with 99,000 miles on it. The original offer on it was $4,000 and I got him up a bit. I was hoping for $21,750 OTD (not including my trade) on the Sonata, so I came close.

    Any thoughts?

Just sent out emails to 4 dealerships and finally got a response on a limited 4cyl with nav (no trade in) in willow gray, heres what they wrote "the MSRP is 26,125, we can do a $1453 store discount (includes $200 coupon), 2,000 rebate and you do qualify for $500 loyalty. This will make the sale price $22,172 plus tax and DMV fees" Tax is 9% for me so i guess i'm lookin at $24,500 or so. I guess I got some work to do. according to edmunds the invoice with the nav is $24,791. I'm about to write a reply email, or maybe i'll wait for other quotes, any suggestions, I never really haggled over email before, has anyone else?

Are you saying that they extended you warranty for 10 years unlimited mileage bumper to bumper or just the drive train?
