  • Technically you are only getting the car for about $600 or so below invoice. You should be able to do a lot better than that. Take a look at my above post reference what I just paid for the same car. You might have to account for the recent price hike, but that was only about $500 and it shouldn't affect how much below invoice you can get ($1,500 or so).

Your MSRP and invoice number look about a $1,000 too low. I am confused. Anyway... Enjoy your new car! Lets us know how you are liking!

Dealer has supposedly ordered my car from the factory but didn't say how long it would take. Wife doesn't want me to buy now, as I deploy to Afghanistan for a year in March. She said it doesn't make sense to buy a new car just to have it sit in garage for a year. I hate when she uses logic!

  • My MSRP and Invoice numbers are from right before the price increases on the Sonata. The dealer had this car since August. At that time the MSRP for a Limited was $24,150, $1,250 for Nav, and options were either $90 or $85. On the invoice side, the base is $22.589, $1,137 for the Nav, and $73 or $68 for the options.

I know that the Nav did not increase in price, but the $90 options are now $95 with an invoice of $76. I believe the base MSRP now is $24,675. It did jump initially to $24,550, but I think it jumped again already.

Powertrain warranty comes with the car from manufacturer. I extended the bumper-to-bumper from 5yr/60k to 10yr/100k.
  • girlethinggirlething Member Posts: 14
How do you get the extended the bumper-to-bumper to 10yr 100,000 miles?
    how much.
Is it better then getting it from an online source?

    You guys are great.

    email from Bob Dun Hyundai:

I have the 2009 Hyundai Sonata GLS 4-cyl with and without the popular equipment package in stock. Both vehicles have carpeted floor mats and mudguards from the factory.

My cash out the door price for the one without the popular equipment package is $16,990. :)

My cash out the door price for the one with the popular equipment package is $17,599. :)

Is this the deal to take or what guy ?? :confuse:

Thank you for your help... Kimberly

I have heard mixed reviews about the Internet thing. But definitely do some comparison shopping, and get your dealer to match the best online quote you can get. From what I know, generally, Internet quotes are cheaper than those offered by dealers. However, in this particular case, the dealer Bob Dunn Hyundai of Greensboro, offered a very competitive quote (I am certain it was less than $1k, if I recall correctly, it was $989).
There is also an extended warranty offered by Hyundai - called Hyundai Protection Plan (HPP) - which is generally more expensive than the once offered by third party.

    Here's the deal I've been offered: (Camelback-Phoenix)

    2009 Sonata Limited
    Navigation
    Powder White Pearl
    Carpeted Floor Mats
    Destination Charge

    MSRP is $26,790
    Invoice is $23,049

Price offered: $21,500 ($1,549 under invoice)

Think I could do any better?
  • That seems right on par to what other people have been getting (me, included).

    Hi NYSniper,

I just got a really good deal on a Limited (no nav) here in upstate NY-- not quite as good as Merg's but the price of my trade-in more than compensated (they came in many 100's above what I expected-- full book trade-in value). My advice is limited to the strategy that worked for me. I used the internet to correspond out of state with the big discounters and asked them to give me their very best OTD price including all fees and NY state taxes. I was fully prepared to drive hundreds of miles to save a lot of $ 'cuz our local dealers aren't known for deep deals. Then I e-mailed the internet salesmen at our two local dealerships and one responded way higher than the out of state quote, then agreed to split the difference, then gave me such a great value on my trade that we came to a deal. It took several go-rounds and me holding firm on the trade-in -- but I knew they wanted to sell me a car. My final price was 20,640 (including 675.00 delivery ) which isn't quite as good as the very best, but the high trade-in price they gave me made it all work and I got to buy close to home. Also, they did not tack on ANY other fees except what was required by state to register.

I detailed my purchase experience above. Came home with a Limited in Khaki with camel interior, I can't get over how nice this car is, especially for the price. I thought I was "settling," but in fact I totally love this car. The only negative is when I go over bumps it feels like they go right through me with no buffer. Other than that the car holds the road way better than I expected and the audio system on the Limited, the trim, the feel of the seats-- fantastic!
Thanks everyone for sharing your advice and experiences-- helped me go for a deal I can feel really good about.
    Cheers!

Just wanted to share my buying experience with you, guys. Bought today my beautiful Sonata GLS manual transmission.
Paid 14.900 out-the-door :D (that includes freight, dealer fees, temp. tags etc.)
Will transfer existing plates and pay state tax when register it myself. Thanks everyone for sharing your stories here - it empowered me to get the best deal :D

**2009 Sonat 4cly with nav, mat, sunroof deflector, cargo tray*** Heard alot about TowneHyundai on this forum so I sent them an email. Got a quote, it says ($20,885 internet pricing.....dealer discount, $2000 rebate and $500 loyalty rebate are included in this price...price does not include ttl.) This sounds actually decent price to start at. But I was gonna send a reply email asking to give an OTD price. I'm just a little confused about this OTD stuff.....say they come back and say 21,000, now this means that the only charge I would have on top of this would be tax...correct and nothing else? Sorry if this is dumb question but have been up for about 3 hours reading post all night trying to figure stuff out. Also has anyone else here bought their car out of state, I pay my NY county tax correct, just curious how they work that out at the NJ dealership?
  • samvijsamvij Member Posts: 15
We paid $500 less due to loyalty rebate from Hyundai.
  • If you get an OTD price that means what you pay to get Out The Door. If the dealer tries to tack any fees/costs onto an OTD price, walk out. They are truely dishonest then.

I forgot to mention that I purchased my Hyundai from Brown's Manassas Hyundai in Northern Virginia. I dealt with Syed, one of the internet managers.

That is a normal price and you can go for it. I mean 21K for OTD excluding tax. You pay the tax of the state that you reside and not the state that you buy. Go to the dealership and tell them that you will pay only 21K for OTD. If they charge you 21K plus one cent for any reaon , you will not buy it. Repeat it 4 times because sometimes they have heavy ears.

    denline,

Could you please share more about your deal? What's the MSRP of your car, what's the options on it? Kristen in Fairfax told me they didn't have any manual sonata in stock. Is this the same one as your Kristine?

    Thanks
  • denlinedenline Member Posts: 6
    Pennellcir,
Here is what I got: Base model Sonala (GLS) manual 5-speed. No options (but it comes standard with plenty, including air-conditioning, XM radio and so on... in fact my BMW MINI did not have half the goodies this one comes standard with...USB I-pod interface for instance...) Check out Hyundai web site to learn all the standard features - you will be impressed.... MSRP for the vehicle was 18.700 plus freight, dealer fees and tax. After applying the 2000 dollar rebate (the only one I qualify for)my OTD price including temp tag preparation was 14.900
I bought mine yesterday and had a good choice of colors for manuals. They had at least three choices of ext/int color combinations to choose from (mine is black with tan interior..which is rare combination for manual)
Hope this helps! Let me know if you need more info...

I bought a sonata 4cly ltd from a very famous NJ dealership on this forum last week. I noticed after two days of purchase that the steer will be shaking if I drive it over 60m. I contacted the manufacturer to report this issue because by the contact with the dealer, ANY manufacturing defects should be addressed to the manufacturer. However, the Hyundai manufacturer said I can ONLY deal with this issue with the dealership. The manufacturer won't deal with it with me. One Hyundai representative once had said if I approve the defect, she could arrange a trade-in. When I finally got the report from an authorized dealership showing that the car is in a manufacturing defect and the two front tires need replacing, the second representative didn't honor what the first said and asked me to contact the dealer to resolve "your problem".

I talked to the selling dealer this afternoon after receiving the report. The dealer said that was not a defect but a replacement of two tires. How ironically? Replacing two tires after two days of purchase is not a defect?

Very very disappointed! Any suggestions on how to deal with the issue or on the lemon law is highly appreciated. I am residing in New York State.

    Many thanks!!
  • zcdyzcdy Member Posts: 11
I just got off the phone with the first representative. While she felt sorry, she said the tire issue is not the one Hyundai should be responsible. She gave the phone number 800-433-6838. I felt very disappointed, and asked what if the audio or the navigator has a problem, should I contact the audio or navigator manufacturer. She didn't reply but insisted that I contact the tire manufacturer and the dealership to resolve the issue.

This is Hyundai, which approves itself a low quality vehicle manufacturer.
  • 59er59er Member Posts: 30
How disappointing! I hope you get your problem resolved through the dealership and not the tire company. You are right- this does not speak well for Hyundai and I hope your story is the exception and not the rule. Do they have a rep for being terrible on accountability after the sale?
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
When I finally got the report from an authorized dealership showing that the car is in a manufacturing defect and the two front tires need replacing...

I don't understand something here. If a Hyundai dealership says the problem is due to a defect in the tires and that two of them need replacing, why didn't you just say to them, "Great, please replace the tires."? Any Hyundai dealership can perform warranty repairs on your car.

Since the problem has occured only once, I don't think the lemon law applies in this case, but maybe the rules in NY State are different than in other states.

I noticed that the prices have dropped on all of the Sonata's by almost $900 at this dealer. Did the mfg rebate go up or just aggressive pricing??
  • girlethinggirlething Member Posts: 14
i just got this offer this morning by email.

They first offered me $16,990. for the 2009 gls with no extras just this Mon 9/22/08 9:41 AM

Now they have offered Wed 9/24/08 11:55 AM

$16,100 out the door on the 2009 Hyundai Sonata GLS 4-cyl with no extra equipment.

    This is 890. cheaper.

    Should I take it??
Let me know I need to decide this week.
  • tenpin288tenpin288 Member Posts: 804
It is likely aggressive dealer pricing. They are a high-volume dealership and with the last business weekend of the month this weekend, they are likely discounting more to make sure they hit a volume bonus threshold.

You are probably soo right on the end of month savings..
Do you think I should try to get more discount/

The price stands at 16,100. 2009 sonata gls no extras.

Should I go for it or get better.?

You guys have saved me so much money thank you.
    anyone go on fatwallet? :shades:
    thanks

    A very reasonable price.
  • nhphdnhphd Member Posts: 67
I have a very very good pressure guage ($15 one) and I check my tire pressures every 3 weeks when the car is cold (not used it for 8 hours- usually early in the morning). I set all tires to 33 (not more). The standard is 32. If you rely on the TPM to tell you that you are low on tire pressure, it is already late. It usually trigers at 29. I also get 34 to 36 MPG in highway and 27 MPG in the city. My car is a 2009 Sonata Limited.
  • tenpin288tenpin288 Member Posts: 804
Is that for an automatic or manual? I just looked at their website and they are showing manual GLS Sonatas for as low as $13323 and autos for as low as $14125! :surprise: Of course you have to add in their "dealer fee" of $389 + TTL. Without all the details about taxes and such I would have to say it looks like a decent deal. Do you have a breakdown of all that?
  • girlethinggirlething Member Posts: 14
The 16,100 is out the door price.
Automatic trans. . 2009 new sonata gls, no extras.

I looked on Bob dunn hyundai and I did not find anything that price , but alot of "call for msrp price".
How did you find those prices.

Sorry. I thought you were talking about Fairfax Hyundai, http://www.fairfaxhyundai.com.
  • starchief5starchief5 Member Posts: 8
Just purchased a 2009 Sonata Limited with nav, floor mats and sunroof wind deflector.

Price:$21,500, before TTL. (TTL will vary from state to state - AZ sales tax alone was $1758, gulp)
I thought it was a pretty good deal. I might have been able to get a couple hundred bucks off somewhere else but this was the nearest dealer to me and thus the place where I will be getting it serviced. This is in Phoenix.

    What say you?

This site was very helpful in helping me get some idea of how much I should offer.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Keep in mind at Fairfax you need to add the destination charge to their published Internet prices in addition to the $389 processing fee, before T&L. If you are from certain states you may need to pay the T&L separately--ask if they handle T&L for your state. Their quoted prices do NOT include special rebates however, e.g. loyalty rebate. So it's a good deal but not quite as good as it first seems. :(

Example: Sonata GLS AT, slate blue/grey (silver available for $264 less), mats, $14,950 OTD which includes $389 processing fee, $650 destination charge, $20 gross receipts tax, $2 for 30-day permit, and $2500 off in rebates ($2000 general, $500 loyalty). They don't handle MN tax and license so I'd have to pay that back home. Those would be about $1150 additional. So overall looking at about $16k.

P.S. they are also offering a $500 gas coupon of some kind with any vehicle purchase in September.
  • zcdyzcdy Member Posts: 11
When I first contacted Hyundai Co., the lady said she could arrange a trade-in if there is a defect. She asked me to have the car diagnosis, but she didn't mention repairing. I also want to have the car replaced. So I asked the service center not to repair.

According to the second contact with the lady, I might be right not to ask for a repair because she said it is Michelin's responsibility to replace the tires not Hyundai's.

One point to make is the risk of buying a car outside your region. Now I have to deal with a dealer in middle NJ but Westchester NY.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Why not deal with your local dealer? As I said, you can have your new Hyundai serviced by ANY Hyundai dealer, for warranty-related repairs.

I am not sure why you would need to replace the car because two tires have a problem, but... that is your business. Good luck.
  • tenpin288tenpin288 Member Posts: 804
Actually, the destination charge is included in the price. We bought a Sonata and a Santa Fe there at the end of July, and for both the price we saw on the website and the price we paid were the same. We paid that price + their $389 fee + TTL and that was it. ;)
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Before my post I talked with an Internet sales rep at Fairfax, since the published price was low enough to start checking for flights to Dulles this weekend on my frequent flier miles, and he told me the prices posted on their web site definitely do NOT include the destination charge of $650. He then calculated my OTD price and it was clear the $650 had been added to the price from the web site. So it appears how they posted prices on the web last July is different from how they do it today.
  • palokpalok Member Posts: 14
Aggressive pricing. They sold 300 Hyundais a month, next nearest dealer was 80. Relatively few cars are being sold and the inventory is oveflowing their lots. I just bought a Sonata and got a very competitive price and a host of other incentives - oil changes, tires for life, $500 gas card voucher, etc. A good time to buy a car is when you don't need one.
  • tenpin288tenpin288 Member Posts: 804
If that's so, that is a big change. I looked over their site tonight and could not find the link/page that was there in July that confirmed that freight was included in the price. Oh well...
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Yes, and it put a fast hold on my flight plans for this weekend since with their $389 fee and the destination charge their deal is really no better than what can be had at some other dealerships on a regular basis, e.g. Towne and Stateside. But a good price for anyone looking to buy a Sonata right now. I can wait. :)
  • fscotfscot Member Posts: 8
Price is high by about $1800. Get an internet price from Stateline or Towne to use for comparison. Typically these folks sell the Sonata for $1700-2000 below invoice plus any rebates.
  • denlinedenline Member Posts: 6
Now, do you, guys, think 14.900 before tax is a decent deal for manual GLS?
  • Yeah, I think I figured out too that Fairfax Hyundai doesn't include destination in their on-line price. I ended up going with Manassas Hyundai, which does the same thing. One thing that both places do that is a little deceiving is that they include destination in the MSRP price they show. That way, their internet price looks that much better.

I did find Manassas Hyundai to be as competitive as Fairfax Hyundai and their docs fee is only $350 (cheap for VA).
