I just bought my 2006 LX with Option Package 3 for under $21000 on the road, using $2,500 in rebates ($500 standard hyundai rebate, $1,000 loyalty discount and $1,000 HMFC discount. This price was a good $1500 below any other in my area Baltimore/Washington. Drove the car home staying strictly below 55 and in a 65 mile trip averaged 35 mpg. So far I'm delighted with the car.

I think a navigation package would be a nice option to have and I think the dash lights for all the various controls could be a little better integrated and uniform in color - the pale yellow/green isn't my favorite.

I bought my Sonata 2006 LX with Package 3 Options for $21,167.00 +TTL on October 15th. $1,500.00 of rebates are included in quote listed above. Went to a total of two (2) dealships before purchasing car at second dealership. Both visits were on 10/15/06. Started shopping at 2:00 PM and left the second dealership that night with the new car. The Sonata was purchased here in the Chicago area. I saved about $150.00 by signing deal with the second dealership. I'm still on my first tank of gas and have about 165 miles on the vehicle as of 1:30 AM on 10/24/05. I'm happy with the purchase. :)

    Enviro2006:

What dealer did you use in the Baltimore-Washington area? I live in Columbia and have been to Antwerpin. I' ve also seen Internet prices posted through Fitzgerald Auto Mall. Thanks. Bob.

Many questions here. First you need to finance at least $10,000 in order to qualify for the $1,000 bonus cash. You can pay it off at any time. You can buy the extended warranty for up to one year. Retail on the warranty is $1118. As far as alarm systems go, we put one on all of our cars here to protect ourselves. It is wireless, so if a customer doesn't decide to purchase it, we remove it. Ours costs $399. I'm sure if you are concerned about a security system, the dealer will offer one and if not check out any good car stereo shop. They tend to have the better systems available, and usually guarantee their installation.

Just a plug for Fitzgerald, I purchaded an Elantra there 2 years ago, conducted all business over phone and internet ( I live in NJ). Best buying experience I ever had, picked up car in an hour - no funny business. Trip was worth it, and I got tovisit my son who lives in area as a bonus.

I haven't tried any negotiations with Fitzgerald, but I'm seriously thinking about it within the next six months or so. Have a '93 Nissan Maxima that's still a good running around car, but I REALLY liked the Sonatas I test drove. We bought a Tucson at Antwerpin, and at the time I thought the deal was OK. But now I see where I could've done better. Oh, well, live and learn.

Some of the documentation fees are high. In NYS the fee is mandated by the state at $45. Paying $299 is a ripoff. How much would it cost if you registered the car yourself?

This is a big profit for the dealer, they send a low paid clerk to the DMV and they may be registering several cars at the same time collecting $299 for each.

Negotiate this fee. Don't get suckered by the phrase, "This is dealer policy."
  • My wife and I purchased a steel gray 06 Sonata LX last night from Riverton Hyundai in Sandy, Utah. Price including $1,000 finance rebate and $1,000 customer cash rebate was $20,000 + TTL. We opted to not get package 3 because of headroom issues with the sunroof.

    We added a 10-year, 100,000-mile bumper-to-bumper Hyundai-backed warranty extension for $995.

FYI: At 4:00 PM yesterday Hyundai increased the cash rebate from $500 to $1,000 for V6 Sonatas.

At the Hyundai site it says 1,000 or 1,000 financing rebate (low rates) it says. Can one still get the 1,000 and financing rebate? at what percent?

Is $17,690 a good out the door price for a 2006 Sonata GL with automatic transmission? This price includes the $500 Hyundai Rebate and the $1000 Hyundai Financing Rebate. We don't qualify for the loyalty rebate and we are not trading in a vehicle. Thanks for your thoughts.
  • chronochrono Member Posts: 149
Check out fitzgerald auto mall online. Using the exact same rebates you are getting they have the same car (GL auto) for $15,846. I would save 2K and buy from them.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
One dealer in my area (Twin Cities) has been advertising for a couple of weeks now the GL automatic with $1500 total rebates for $16,399 + T&L (6.5% sales tax plus roughly $400 in license fees and doc fees). So depending on how much T&L is in your area, that seems in the ballpark. It helps to post the price before T&L, because we don't know what those are in your area.

I just double checked the Hyundai site and it says 1000 cash back & 1000
rebate for Hyundai financing. From 10/25 to 10/31. Make the GLS V6
    very attractive this week.

Has anyone bought a car from Fitzmall, in Md. who lives in northern Pa.?
Is it a big hassle? I checked their prices on 2006 GLS V6 and they
are way under invoice, 17062 + TTL. Best price I have gotten in Pa.
is 18300. This is a big difference. My concern would be insurance,
title, etc., not to mention service, since I would be more than
300 miles from Fitgerald in Gaithersburg. How would the Hyundai
service in Pa. treat me knowing I got the car in Md. Anyone have any
    ideas on any of this?
Invoice with rebates is 17831. Any idea how Fitz is pricing at 17062?
Sorry for all the questions, but I'm really confused.
  • I checked out Fitzmall when purchasing my Sonata, and I live in Utah. I called the sales department, and from what I could understand, the process is quite easy. Everything including financing can be set up online. I know several people on Edmunds who have purchased their vehicles through Fitz and now swear by them. Great place.

The shipping from MD to UT is what killed it for me. About $1,300 in a closed container insured.

Your local Hyundai dealer will provide service because it's a major revenue generator for them. However, they probably will not go "above and beyond" for you like they would if you purchased the car from them.

My strategy was to take the Fitz quote to my local dealer and give them a chance to compete against it.

That has been exactly opposite my experience. I own two Elantras and took them both to the dealer from which I purchased them for a long time. But I finally got fed up with their incompetence and their poor attitude re customer service that I switched to another dealer for service, actually one that is closer to me. I have had much better service from them, not perfect, but I get the feeling they are at least interested in providing good service. Maybe they see an opportunity here: "He bought these Hyundais from another dealer, maybe if we treat him well he'll buy his next Hyundai from us." Just a thought.

Besides, if you buy a car from out of town, how does your local dealer know you didn't just move into town and started coming to them for service? Are they going to treat you poorly because you decided to come to them for service? I don't think so.

We purchased our car on 10/22/2005 in Houston, TX. It is a Bright Silver Sonata LX with Pkg.3 (Sunroof and CD Changer)

    $24,895.00 MSRP
    $ 199.00 (Price of Tint b4 Negotiations)
    $23,439.00 Invoice (includes a $600 Advertising fee)

    $22,500.00 Sale Price
    + $ 100.00 Tint
    + $ 1,293.75 Tax (6.25%)
    + $ 242.51 Fees
    - $ 500.00 Manufacturer Rebate
    - $ 1,000.00 HMFC Rebate
    - $ 400.00 Graduation Rebate
    ___________________________

    $22,236.26 Final Price

I wish I would have waited this week. I noticed that the rebates went up from $500 to $1000 on the LXs as well. Also, I wish I would have owned a Hyundai before to get the $1000 loyalty rebate. This would have brought the drive-out price to $20,736.26. Ohh well...it seems like I got a good deal anyways...any feedback???

    Thanks.
  • "Besides, if you buy a car from out of town, how does your local dealer know you didn't just move into town and started coming to them for service?"

In this case, Zen2 has already visited the PA dealers and received quotes. They know Zen2 didn't just move into town already owning a Sonata. Sounds like your experiences have been different, but the dealers I have purchased vehicles from have certainly given me special treatment, with freebies and car loaners when they didn't have too. They've worked hard to make me a repeat buyer. Dealer service is obviously going to vary depending on the management and workers, but in talking with the establishments I've patronized, they readily admit to providing extra service for people who buy vehicles from them.

Anyway, that's beside the point. My main argument was that Zen2 will still be serviced by the local dealers no matter where the car is purchased from, and Fitz has a good reputation for easy purchases at extremely aggressive rates.
  • Nearly a $1,000 below invoice. Good job! In terms of the extra rebate this week, it's difficult to predict what the manufacturer is going to do, so don't beat yourself up over it. For all we know the rebate could become even more appealing next week, or disappear altogether. Forget about it and enjoy that new Sonata!

    Thanks Ty...

I'm already enjoying the Sonata. It's a great car...Hyundai really hit the nail on this one.

As for the extra in the rebate, I called my dealership to see if there is anything they could do for this. Hopefully, they can compensate me in some way for this change, but I'm not going to be holding breath.
  • hotch41hotch41 Member Posts: 61
I just looked at their website and their prices for a base LX (no sunroof & no 6 disc changer) is $18,792 and for the Pkg. 3 LX is $20,070! That is about $5K off MSRP. I realize there are rebates out there, but these discounts are pretty unbelievable. What do you all think is going on?? Since they have been introduced, I've maybe seen a half dozen or so on the road. Is the car not selling well? At these prices, who cares about resale value? Is Hyundai concerned that the Sonata is not the big hit it was hoping for? I don't understand since, according to the NHTSA, it's one of safest cars on the road today. Thoughts please. Thanks!
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
In the past, the Sonata was not too competitive with the best cars in its class. With the redesign, it is now competitive but it's still a new model. Also I think public perception re Hyundai's quality and reliability has lagged the improvements made over the past few years. And Hyundai buyers are used to getting big discounts and rebates. The Sonata's price jumped up with the redesign, also. And it's a brutal market out there, with so many good mid-sized cars to compete with, almost all of which are heavily discounted (e.g. today's ad: $6000-7000 off the Mazda6, in my town). So I think it's a number of things. Take advantage of the situation!
  • chronochrono Member Posts: 149
Well there is a 1K rebate going on with the V6 models plus a 1K incentive if you finance through Hyundia finance. That's a good portion of the discount ..
  • buyasonatabuyasonata Member Posts: 7
    what were the headroom issues?
  • Like most vehicles, the Sonata sunroof drops the headliner down roughly a couple of inches. It's most noticeable in the Sonata from the back seat. When sitting in the back seat and looking forward, you can see a noticeable drop in the headliner just in front of your face that continues all the way forward.

    -Ty
  • zen2zen2 Member Posts: 226
But even after the discounts they are 800 to 1000 under invoice.
How do they make money doing this?
  • koolkool Member Posts: 1
I would like you to provide me website, phone no., address for this dealer. So that I can make a better deal with local dealer or atleast buy from your dealer. I almost bought it today for $21,000.00 but held off. I test drove LX it's excellent.
Your immediate response would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you.

On a trip from SC to Tulsa OK a three weeks ago, a few 06 Sonata's passed us and my wife & I liked the looks so while in Tulsa I visited the dealer. All their Sonata's had an add on of $ 1,500.00 for "Market Adjustment. On my return to Columbia, SC I visited the local dealer and there it is again. This time it was $2,000.00 Market adjustment, plus paint treatment, fabric treatment, Window tint and Wheel locks (just under $1,000.00).
First I will never pay a "Market Adjustment" and you are now in the Cam/Cord price range with similar equipment. This was really a turn off.

Has anyone run into this "Market Adjustment"? Thanks
  • bhmr59bhmr59 Member Posts: 1,602
If you're ready to buy, tel them what they can do with their market adjustments and other add-ons. You can do much better elsewhere, even if it means buying outside your local area.

You can't get that information in our forums... Only the dealership name, city and state... This is clearly stated at the bottom of every page...

You may include the dealership name, city and state in your post. Please do not post names of salespeople, telephone numbers, email addresses, or other contact information.

What you guys don't understand is that at all the major dealerships across the country that do good internet business offer crazy prices on cars. Fitzgerald gets some much press cause of their advertising. There is a place in Pittsburgh that does the same prices as they do. Its all about units, when selling Hyundais.

As much research as everybody does, people should know that their isn't much mark up on these cars because of their tremendous warranty. So offering a low ball offer is usally countered with the price you are looking for.

You really need to consider checking out other Hyundai dealer websites like #1 Cochran in Pittsburgh. They will honor any written quote. :)

Can anyone recommend dealer in Kansas? I am interested in the Sonata and like everyone else looking for fair dealership.
  • michaellnomichaellno Member Posts: 4,120
Was looking at Hyundai's with my wife and daughter tonight ... looking for a car for daughter. Drove the following:

    '05 Elantra GT w/ auto & pkg 8 (sunroof + ABS/TC)
    '05 Tucson GLS V6 AWD
    '06 Sonata GL 2.4 w/ auto

Daughter liked the Sonata best .. however, salesman told me that there is are very few Sonata 4 cylinders due to a strike in Korea. Any truth to that?

They also had a GLS V6 w/ no options with an $18,8xx tag hanging from the mirror .. in looking at Edmunds TMV (which, BTW, doesn't show the extra $500 rebate), it seems available for $18,548 ($1000 rebate + $1000 HMFC incentive).

Hard to believe that I'm considering a 235HP car for my 17 year old, but its only $1400 more than the 4 banger.

    Thoughts?
  • danf1danf1 Member Posts: 897
There was a strike in Korea that didn't last too long. 4cy Sonata GL availability is good, its the GLS that is in short supply in my neck of the woods. Personally, I agree that 235hp is too much for your daughter, but wouldn't she like to continue driving the Saturn? Trade the Focus and get yourself the Sonata.

If it is indeed going to be your daughters car, I would recommend the 4cyl Sonata. It's got all the safety equipment out there, and we all know how young drivers have a tendency to be a little less than safe from time to time. Forget the airbags for a minute. Stability control will assure that there is a much lower possibility of needing the airbags.

If you decide on the GL in the next 2 days, $16,500 if you finance w/HMFC should get it done for you. Its been a very slow month in the car business, and I'm certain that your dealer would love to get one more on the board this month. That should be about a net deal for them.
  • zen2zen2 Member Posts: 226
Well, decided to buy at the local dealer, for the service reasons,
and avoiding hassle of getting down to Md. and transferring title,
etc. Price I got on a GLS V6, was a little over invoice, with 2000 in rebates,
came to 3495 off sticker. It was a tossup for 4 vs. 6 for me, until dealer said
they wouldn't discount the 4 as much, only a 500 dollar diff. I thought
the five speed auto, special tint on windows, dual exhaust, not to mention
the extra horsepower made the 6 much more attractive for 500 bucks.
And I was tired, didn't want the hassle of haggling over price of 4.
Now if I could just find a way to get comfortable in the driver seat....
but that is for another forum.
  • michaellnomichaellno Member Posts: 4,120
    Thanks for the information.

A little more investigation turned up 10 GL automatics at another dealer here in Denver, including 2 in Silver, a preferred color (the one we drove last night was the Dark Cinnamon, which was nice but not exactly what we were looking for).

My Saturn is loaded w/ leather, heated seats and sunroof, so I'd kinda like it back. While I could envision an LX w/ all the goodies parked in my driveway, I promised my wife that I'd keep the Saturn a good, long time when I bought it 3 years ago - only 25 payments left.

The payments on the Sonata should be pretty close to those I'm making on the Focus.

I'm assuming that the $16,500 number is after all the rebates (500 + 1000 HMFC). I'll give this other dealer a call and see what they have to say.

Will also have to negotiate the trade in value of the Focus. We'll see what happens.
  • danf1danf1 Member Posts: 897
Invoice should be about $18,500. Figure $500 holdback, $500 consumer rebate and $1000 finance rebate. Pretty much a break even for the dealer, but you'll find out fast how badly they need to sell a car this month.
  • michaellnomichaellno Member Posts: 4,120
Got a quote from dealer #2 -- $17165, which breaks down as follows:

    invoice from Edmunds 18015
regional ad fee 500 *not shown on Edmunds website
    subtotal #1 18515
    financing rebate (1000)
    consumer rebate (500)
    subtotal #2 17015
    profit 150
    final total 17165

plus taxes and adjustment for trade in and down payment

So, basically $150 over invoice, which I can live with. I'll probably go in later today and have them take a look at my trade ... if those numbers are OK, then we'll probably have a deal.

If not, then I'll look into selling the Focus myself and see what kind of incentives Hyundai offers in November.
  • michaellnomichaellno Member Posts: 4,120
Got several phone calls from dealer #1. Bottom line is that they will sell me a GLS V6 for $18,165 (after rebates) and will give me $8500 for my Focus, sight unseen.

    Seems like a great deal.

    BUT.....

My daughter just called, and is thinking of going in a different direction than the Sonata. Her perspective is that if she is going to have this car for 3/5/7 years, she should get want she wants rather than the first car that 'goes fast enough'.

So, she wants to take a look at the Saturn ION, perhaps with the optional 2.4L engine (170HP).

    Stay tuned.

Buy whatever you think is best.

Who is paying for the car plus taxes plus insurance? Any 17 year old kid should be happier than a pig in mud to have any brand new car.

I think most families would give the used car to the kid and either mom or dad would take the new car. (your used cars aren't exactly old clunkers, the oldest being a 2003).

Oh yeah, my kids, both grown up fine now, were boys. I forgot about the Daddy's little girl thing.
  • godeacsgodeacs Member Posts: 481
Agree wholeheartedly! Problem with today's kids - they're given too much too early...but that's a topic for another forum...lol. When we were 17, we were happy to get ANY car our parent's said we could have. Seems like the shoes on the other foot nowadays...a shame....
  • bhmr59bhmr59 Member Posts: 1,602
Don't like to reply to a reply agreeing with me BUT, you made me think back.

In late '65 I was almost 17 years old and my parents bought me a 1960 Ford Falcon. 3 speed manual shift on the column (talk about sloppy shifting), heater and radio (tubes had to warm up before the radio played--remember that?). The car had no tach, but it was wound so tight at 55 mph that I think the fastest I ever drove it was 65 for a short stretch. The car was pretty much maxxed at 55. No power anything, including steering or brakes. Cars had such things then, but my Falcon didn't. Anyway as a young kid, I was happy to have a car.

The cars I gave my kids were always older cars (with decent equipment for the mid-90's) so I didn't have to pay for collison coverage. If they smashed it up and the car was ony worth $1,000 to $2,000 I was ahead as compared to a higher priced car and paying hundreds for collision coverage.

$18,728.99 Final Price [$17,500 before fees]

Went for the financing to get the rebate. Plan to refinance early next week. Finance guy told us to wait 4 months before we refinance so the dealership would not get burned by Hyundai for customers not following through. Then charged us 9.8% on the paperwork after telling us it was 8.9%. The salesperson straightened him out because he had already sent the paperwork to his back at 8.9% and he had our signature at the higher rate. We figured we didn't care we were going to refinance anyway. Turns out what he did was illegal and he could have gotten really burned because did not have a signed a sheet with the 8.9% rate. Anyway, it got straightened out and we plan on calling our bank on Monday but I am looking forward to the customer satisfaction phone call from Hyundai.

Anyway, love this car so far. I have been driving around my suburban town in the rain and snow today and boy does it handle well. Already spilled coffee in it

Your sales tax is apparantly lower than CT's. But does Taxachusetts really charge $260 for a title?
  • Congratulations on the purchase, zen2. The I4 would have given a bit more MPG, but I think you'll enjoy driving that powerful V6. It's nice to know, and feel, there's always power on tap when needed/wanted. Happy ownership!

My friend just last weekend bought a 06 Sonata LX V6 with leather and all except the sunroof for $17950(before fees). It took him about 3 months to get it this low, and the dealer is in Gurnee, IL. If anyone is around this location this is a great buy.
  • godeacsgodeacs Member Posts: 481
This is rather hard to believe since that is over $3.6K BELOW invoice. While I understand there are good deals and incentives around on Sonatas this is a tad over the top. I would love to know how this dealer stays in business.... :confuse:
  • throckmortonthrockmorton Member Posts: 2
Title fees seem to vary by dealer. Another dealer quoted me $229, but had a higher overall price and would not budge.

You know you're from Massachusetts when you drive 45 minutes to New Hampshire to save $5 in sales tax. :)
  • bhmr59bhmr59 Member Posts: 1,602
Maybe we're using different terminology. Most places have a dealer conveyence fee. Are you including that in the term "title fee?" In CT, unfortunately not far behind MA in taxes (& hidden taxes called something else), title fee is charged by the state ($20 or $25) to issue and maintain a title regardless of make or model of anything else. Title fee does not vary from dealer to dealer (unless they try to rip you off by charging an add on to process the title papers in addition to the other paper work they charge you for).

Focus on the bottom line. I bought my car in FL, paid $1500-1600, after taxes & all fees, less than local CT dealer wanted. Yet, FL dealer's conveyence fee was $80 higher. Same 6% sales tax.
