"...Unfortunately only dealer in town. I find this ignorance, or laziness really irritating, especially since they seem to have a lot of spare time, in which they could be researching the cars, just like we do..."
    .
Well most of the Hyundai sales people I dealt with were pretty much young... their first Sales job I guess..
It doesn't appear to be a high paying job for a car pro:

    a. They get $100 per car they sell.

    b. They depend on customers good evaluation ( after purchase you get a survey from Hyundai to evaluate Salesperson.)
If they get good evaluation from all car purchasers that month; then Hyundai will pay them an extra $150 per car sold that month.

    C. Finally, if they reach their monthly quota (not sure 10-15); Hyundai will give them an extra $75 per car for that month.

As you may have probably noticed, they're pretty much nervous and chain smokers... and they keep reminding when you buy a car not to forget the Survey/evaluation.
The above incentives are for any Hyundai car they sell regardless of the model or price...

They really don't care how much you pay for the car as long as it is ok'd by the manager!

Anyone looking for a fair price on a 10year 100K bumper to bumper warranty on Hyundai might want to give the Sheboygan
Hyundai dealer a try. I got a warranty for 45 % off dealer retail. Came out to be $988, much less than the $1700+ some dealers wanted. Love the 'net !

I have all of you to thank for helping buy my new car. I feel I finally was educated enough to play the game and emerge a WINNER! I made an offer on a 2006 Sonata GLS V6 ($17,500)to a dealer close by. They countered at $18,000. I sent out emails to dealerships farther away and most offered $18,500. Then a dealer one hour away offered $17,750. I made an appt to drive there and pick up the car the next weekend. On Friday, a dealer I had never visited or sent an email to called and said they would meet my price. I called and asked him how he knew me? He said he worked for the dealership I had made an offer of $17,500 and the next day he went to work for another, actually closer to my home. I was glad he found me. I bought the car the next day for the price I wanted! I only qualified for $2000 in rebates. I avoided all extra fees and only paid tax, license fee and document fee required by Washingto State. The dealer was great to work with, he will get an excellent rating for me. The F&I guy gave me the song and dance about not paying off the loan before I make 4 payments. He said they don't get any money from that, as our interest rate was too low, but I would be sent a bill for the $1000 rebate. I said this is written nowhere in the documents and there is a statement that there will be no verbal agreements. I may just pay this off because I was lied to. I told him, I don't mind waiting the 4 payments as long as you tell me the truth. He says, "This is just what HMFC tells us, it is Saturday and I can't call them and ask why". Otherwise I am thrilled with my car, with the experience and the help of my Edmunds buddies! THANKYOU THANKYOU THANKYOU!

Good job. I paid $17,500 for the same car with only two $1000 rebates. I'm glad to see I am in the ballpark. Here's what I was told at another dealership
    MSRP-20895
    Invoice-19231
    Advertising-500
    shipping--600
Then other numbers were thrown my way:
    Invoice-20331
    Holdback-627
    Totals 19704
These didnt make any sense. I went to the message boards and decided I would pay $17,500. It seemed a good deal for me and they should still make some money off the deal. My offer was accepted by someone who really wanted to sell a car. Most other dealers offered $18,500. I am happy with the deal.

    $17,500 deal?
Is that price before or after the $2,000 Rebates?
Is it net + taxes and licence fee?
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Wow, that is a really good price, especially considering you got only $2000 in rebates. Enjoy your new Sonata!
  • averigejoeaverigejoe Member Posts: 559
Glad you are a happy Hyundai owner. Keep us posted about what you like and don't like about your new Sonata. And what your friends say about it too.
  • kathyrnkathyrn Member Posts: 10
    1. Cost of car--$19,500
    2. Sales tax--$1,774
    3. Government licensing fees $181
    3. Dealer doc fee--$35
    Total $21,490
    rebate--$1000
    HMFC financing--$1000
    Total paid-$19,490
Does this explain? I don't know about other states, but our sales tax on autos is 9.1% and we have passed voters initiatives to limit licensing fees to $30 but the government keeps taking too much. A lot of things cost more here than in the midwest or south, I have found from my family that live in those areas. I love the car and am happy to have made a deal that helps me and keeps the car dealerships in business.

Finally got my GLS V6 yesterday at a local dealer. The salesman was alright, we negotiated on the phone even before I got there and he had exactly what he promised me when I got there.

    Final Price after 2000 rebates : 16,900
    TTLD : +1000
Total Price out of door : 17900

Business manager tried his best to sell a lot of options, but I was able to get out of there without signing onto a single additional thing.

Not sure if 988 is a good price.. When I got the GLS V6 yesterday, dealer tried to sell all the bells and whistles and when I did not accept any, he was trying to sell me stuff at 799.

I still did not go for it though

definetly take the Hyundai financing to get an extra $1,000 rebate. If you can get a better rate from your bank or credit union, you can always refinance.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
If you know anyone--parent, relative, friend, co-worker--who is very experienced at the car-buying game, the best thing you can do is have them help you. You can read a lot about it here at Edmunds.com and other places, but nothing substitutes for experience. You can learn from their example and then be ready the next time.

I was talking with my oldest sister yesterday about the first new car she bought 30 years ago. She was a stubborn 21-year-old who wanted to prove her independence, so she didn't ask our father, who was in sales and had decades of experience in car buying, to help her. She pulled up on the driveway of our parents' house with her new car, very proud of it. Our father went out to look it over, looked at the Maroney sticker and asked, "So, what did you pay for it?" My sister just looked at him blankly and pointed to the sticker. He cried, "You didn't pay full sticker?!? No one pays sticker price for a car!!" Needless to say, she learned a painful lesson that day.

after talking to a local dealer, he offered me 18,800.00 on a V6 gls...said it was the best he could do on total price out the door...i live in the houston area...did you get the extra 1000.00 off for the owner loyalty??
  • bhmr59bhmr59 Member Posts: 1,602
$18,800 out the door may be a pretty good price. Find out what his all inclusive price is before tax and any state fees such as title & registration.

Or, make him an offer. He won't accept it, walk away. See post #924. Kathryn was able to get a GLS v-6 for $17,500 plus sales tax and state fees. If your local dealer wants too much money, don't be afraid to check with dealers further away, even hundred of miles. The local dealer will still service the car.
  • tb88tb88 Member Posts: 242
"...he offered me 18,800.00 on a V6 gls..."
Out the door, that doesn't sound too bad.
    Try a lower offer... $18,000
If that doen't work go up $200...
If still doesn't bite... try another $200...

You should be able to get a few hundreds off... maybe.

I called HMFC today to clarify the Rebate question.
    I asked the following questions:

Q: Is there a penalty for paying off (prepaying) LOAN early?
    Rep. Answer: NO... None whatsoever.

    Q. Is there a minimum number of monthly payments required before a pay off; due to the $1,000 Rebate ?
    Rep. Answer: Nope!

    Q. What about the $1,000 financing rebate?
Rep. Answer: You get to keep it.

Anyone can help me with purchasing a 2006 GL. I'm in South Florida.
I did visit a car dealer today. I had "EDMUNDS" prices with me, but I did not manage get even close.

Did anybody manage a buying/NEGOTIATE over the phone or email.
  • yidp5yidp5 Member Posts: 5
Is true that the pinstripes and some treatment on the seats are increasing the price or this just another dealer's story.

Are these two above are mandatory???

    Thanks
  • yidp5yidp5 Member Posts: 5
    HI,
Is that 16775 out of the door price?
Did get any buyer incentive/ financed with hyundai/ owner loyalty ...

I'm will buy GL-AT, here in South Florida and will appreciate you help.

    Thanks

Tape pinestriping is applied by the dealerships, NOT the factory. Same goes for upholstery treatment. The dealers charge anywhere from $125.00 to $200.00 for spraying Scotchguard on the upholstery and having one of their minimum wage broom-pushers unfurl self-adhesive tape striping onto a new car. You can buy aerosol Scotchguard at WalMart for less than $4.00, and the tape striping at Pep Boys for less than $5.00. You tell me whether these additions to the factory sticker price are dealer padding or not. (Hint: you do NOT have to accept unrequested dealer add-ons, and many dealers will leave the pinstriping in place and just deduct the additional markup during negotiations if you balk, rather than chance having to repair paint damage if their detail guy lifts paint while removing the tape striping.)

Well I just bought a new LX this afternoon. I had looked at a couple different cars. I like the Ford Fusion a lot, but the Sonata offered much more for the money. I traded in a 2002 Sonata and man I can not believe this is the same model. The 2006 model is beautiful. I paid 22,300 for the car minus the 3K in incentives, plus tax(1178) and dealer fees(380) so it was about 21K out the door. That included the slight loss on my '02 since I owed a little more than I got for it. I had almost bought one last week from another dealer but they only wanted to give me $2500 on the trade. I got $3400 today. And I did not take a big loss at all on the car so I was very happy. I already have a new loan so I plan to refinance soon. They did tell me I need to wait 3 months, but we will see. Overall I am very happy. I got the Dark Cinnamon nice color.
  • bhmr59bhmr59 Member Posts: 1,602
You seem to have taken a hit on the trade-in value unless the '02 was in very rough condition. Essentially, they gave you nothing for your trade-in.
  • tb88tb88 Member Posts: 242
Trade in "... I got $3400 today...". That seems to be on the low side.
    Early this month I traded in a Sonata 2001 - 4 Cyl. Auto with 50K for $6,000.

    Refinance:
"...so I plan to refinance soon. They did tell me I need to wait 3 months, but we will see...": Do not take their word for it ... Read your Financing Contract: if it is not written in there and/or signed something about waiting 3 months: they are telling you a bunch of b.s.
If there is no pre-payment penalty stipulated in the Loan Contract; you can pay it off anytime you like!

Well the Car had 87,000 miles on it. It also needed new bakes and the Air bag light was on indicating a problem and so was the emergency brake light. So it was kind of at the point where I would have needed to throw some money into it.
  • mikhamikha Member Posts: 5
The price in #924 is 17500. I wonder how is it possible if invoice price $20331 (cardirect.com)? Even with $2000 rebates... It's still $18331?
  • tb88tb88 Member Posts: 242
    Read #929 !
  • mikhamikha Member Posts: 5
Invoice: $20331, Destination: $600, Dealer's earning: ~ $500 = $21443. Now, comparing it with the price from #929 - I still wonder, how does dealer agree to sell the car for ~ $19500... It's seems there is something I don't know, please explain

    Thanks
  • bhmr59bhmr59 Member Posts: 1,602
According to Edmund's the invoice is $19,831 including destination. So the dealer sold it at $331 below invoice. There could be factory to dealer incentives and/or sales volume bonuses. Plus, invoice price may be higher than the price a dealer actually pays.
  • yidp5yidp5 Member Posts: 5
Thanks a lot for your advise.
It help me to get a better and clear picture of all.

"...Plus, invoice price may be higher than the price a dealer actually pays..."
Showing the "Invoice" is a gimmick and a fraud, because it is really not the net cost to a dealer. It is another gimmick to make buyer fall for it!

Plus other incentives (volume discount/kickbacks...) bring the dealer's true cost way below what they pretend they paid for wholesale.
  • zen2zen2 Member Posts: 226
Mine had window etching, that the dealer wanted
me to pay 299 for. I said I didn't want the etching,
and we went round and round about not having the
tracking service provided. Net, I didn't pay for the etching.
  • stockmanjoestockmanjoe Member Posts: 353
Yes everything you said is true.
  • stockmanjoestockmanjoe Member Posts: 353
Most of the crap they load on cost them nothing or very little like mud flaps and pin strips and etching. It is all BS just ignore it.
  • stockmanjoestockmanjoe Member Posts: 353
I got the dark Cinnamon too. I love it.
  • stockmanjoestockmanjoe Member Posts: 353
I agree. I got a GLS 2006 Sonata 4 cyl for 18,100 less 2,000 in rebates. I think I should/could/would have haggled about 300 more out of them.
  • stockmanjoestockmanjoe Member Posts: 353
I am up in the Jax area. I bought my Sonata for 18,100 less 2000 in rebates. I know they negotiate overthe phone. Orange Park Hyundai.

I had an eye opening experience today trying to help my girlfriend buy a Sonata. Everything went downhill once we got into the finance dept. I pretty much was close to my target price for a GLS 4 cyl and was at $15,900 otd. All we needed left to do basically was get the deal done through finance and that is were it took a turn for the worse. The finance guy gave us a rate of 11.9% which I thought was out of hand. He said it was this high due to is being her first car purchase. Her credit history is good and he said the score he got for her was 646. I didn't think that the interest rate he was giving was justafiable but he really wouldn't budge. I also was interested in the recent College Grad program and he gave us a rate of 12.2% for that and said that was unchangeable. My girlfriend was not to found of this since those interest rates were pushing $350+ a month payments and I had told her it would be around $300 a month. Granted the price we were getting the car for was $800-$900 more than what I had wanted to get it for but still that APR to me was out of hand. The finance guy was really pushy about it try to get us to change the term length and putting money down to lower the payments and basically my girlfriend walked out in tears due to his pressuring. While I was trying to get the title for the trade back the finance guy was talking to the sales manager who said they could lower the payments to $325 and when I asked him what interest rate that would be he wouldn't say. He said they would have to phone it in to see if they could get it lowered to that. I am being unreliastic in thinking that the rate of almost 12% is not right for her score of 646? She is a teacher so she makes around $35k a year and on her credit app she put she had no car payment, which is true, and no rent payment since she is using my parents address. She does have some credit card debt and student loans but is never late on any payments. I was thinking she would get a rate between 6%-8%? Is that unrealistic? Is she really suppose to get such a high rate since it is her first car and according to the finance guy has no really like payment history even though she has had credit cards for over 5 years? As well, is it true for the high rates for the College Grad program? I really think that the finance guy was just trying to stick it to us and I just wanted to see if that really is the case. I read on the HMFC that the APR is negotiable and is set on what you negotiate with the dealership which I didn't know beforehand and the finance guy was making it seem like what he was giving me was the best he could do and I am guessing that isn't the case. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
  • averigejoeaverigejoe Member Posts: 559
Either try another dealer, or, if you like the car and the price, buy it and then refinance it at your credit union soon after purchase. You'll still get the benefit of the Hyundai finance rebate that way.
  • tb88tb88 Member Posts: 242
"...GLS 4 cyl and was at $15,900 otd..." that is a price way below the average selling price I have seen so far for a GLS 4Cyl!
    Any trade-in involved?
    Loyalty rebate?

As far as financing goes: if as you say she is a teacher, there is only one place to go to : teacher Credit Union which can't be beat, to refinance as soon as possible; and if there is NO penalty, stipulated in writing, for pre-paying the loan!
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Are you sure there is a 20-post maximum per day?
  • lr23lr23 Member Posts: 14
The price for the car was $17996 minues $2500 in rebates ($500 cash back, $1000 for financing through HMFC, and $1000 loyalty owner rebate). Trade was $1300. After tax, tags, and fees it was a little over $15,900 otd. I had no problem dealing with the sales person at all. They were pretty helpful and didn't give me too much run around. Since this is both my first time dealing with a car purchase as well as hers I guess there is still somethings I didn't know about the whole experience that I thought I did. I was thinking about the refinance thing through the credit union but when I was talking to my parents about it they were giving me the impression that it was not going to be as simple as I thought it would be for some reason. The teacher's credit union here has a new car purchase APR of 5.49% but does';t list any refinance rate. Does it all depend on your credit what rate you will get from them or does everyone in the credit union get the same rate? Pardon my ingornance in any of this. I just honestly don't a whole lot about taking out loans. We are both just hitting our mid 20's so this all has been a learning experience.
  • tb88tb88 Member Posts: 242
...The teacher's credit union here has a new car purchase APR of 5.49% but does';t list any refinance rate. Does it all depend on your credit what rate you will get from them or does everyone in the credit union get the same rate?...

1- She must become a member - usually needs to deposit $5 - $10 to open account.

2- Credit Union usually charges the same rate for members unless BAD CREDIT; and then maybe a little higher (I doubt it though).

    3. Refinancing a new car which is a few days old is still a NEW CAR PURCHASE (under 6 months- 1year).

    4. Your best bet is to give them a call and find out all about it; or better yet: stop by and talk to them... there is no need for an appointment. They will explain everything you need to know and/or do.

    5. Get rid of your "fears" and don't be so "UNSURE" of/about yourself... act like very confident person(s)!

I've been emailing my local (and only Hyundai dealership in my area) and have gotten him to agree to sell a GLS-V6 at invoice price. He started out at $1K under MSRP. Edmunds has the invoice price (including sunroof) $20,615 -- would you consider this a good deal? I would like to buy the car by the end of December so I can hold out a little longer. Am gonna use the $2K in rebates to roll it out at $18,615. plus tax, title and doc fee (which by the way is an addition $367 to the invoice price). Have read the previous posts and am wondering if I should tell him I don't want to pay more than $20,000 plus doc fee.

    Any response if most grateful.

    Patsy
  • stockmanjoestockmanjoe Member Posts: 353
They will go 500 under invoice and then less rebates. Don't settle for less and don't let them add a 300 - 500 dollar admin fee either.
  • stockmanjoestockmanjoe Member Posts: 353
    No post maximum.
  • backybacky Member Posts: 18,949
Maybe they will and maybe they won't. If it is the only Hyundai dealer in town, the competition isn't there like it is in bigger cities with multiple dealerships. But maybe there is another dealership within reasonable driving distance, and it could be used as an alternative--at least for bargaining power. Anyway, it never hurts to see what happens when you try to get them to go lower. The worst that can happen is they say, "No", and let you walk out the door. That is a good indication they have gone as low as they will go.
  • zen2zen2 Member Posts: 226
I called my CU, which coincidentally, used to be the
teacher's CU, and they told me it was still a new
car finance. They went by the year of the car, not
how many times you financed it. I plan to do
that as soon as I get my second payment coupon.
  • averigejoeaverigejoe Member Posts: 559
    MSRP 20,734
    dealer discount 6,746
    rebate 1,000
    owner loyalty 500
    college grad 400
    military rebate 500
    (Doc fee is 299)

Its an advertised special in Phoenix, AZ. Brand new, not a demonstrator.

Yeah, I know you are saying, "well, it must be a 4 cylinder stripped model." But hey, its a GLS, so how stripped could it be with MSRP of $20,734 ?

    Early bird gets the worm?
